The Very Small Home: Japanese Ideas for Living Well in Limited Space

Book Description
Building small can be a sign of higher ambitions, and those who take the time to peruse these pages will undoubtedly grow to appreciate that creating a small home can be an amazingly positive and creative act, one which can enhance life in surprising ways. The Very Small Home presents stunning design advances in Japan. Eighteen recent houses, from ultramodern to Japanese rustic, are explored in depth. Particular emphasis is given to what the author call the Big Idea-the overarching concept that does the most to make the house feel more spacious than it actually is. Among the Big Ideas introduced here are ingenious sources of natural light, well-thought-out atriums, snug but functional kitchens, unobtrusive partitions, and free-flowing circulation paths. An introduction by the author puts the house designs in the context of lifestyle trends, and highlights their shared characteristics. For each project, the intentions of the designers and occupants are examined. The result is a very human sensibility that runs through the book. A glimpse of the dreams and aspirations that these unique homes represent and that belies their apparent modesty. The second half of the book is devoted to illustrating the special features in the homes, from clever storage and kitchen designs, to ingenious skylights and nooks. As with his earlier Small Spaces, Azby Brown has given home owners, designers, and architects a fascinating new collection of thought-provoking ideas.Customer Reviews:

Maroon Arts: Cultural Vitality in the African Diaspora

Anthropologists Sally and Richard Price transport us into the ancient world of the Saramanka and Ndyuka Maroon, who live in the rainforests of the South American countries Suriname and French Guyana and are possibly the most African people in the Americas. These descendants of slaves were brought to that region nearly 500 years ago by Dutch traders, but they rebelled, escaped, and formed autonomous communities that have survived for centuries. By examining their art--a robust potpourri of Afro-Amerindian-influenced anthropomorphic figurines, calabash bowls, embroideries, hair-braiding patterns, dances, drums, finger pianos, and paintings--the authors also detail how these brave and proud people contended with colonial powers, coups, corporations, shady art dealers, and the assault of modern civilization on their cultural values (as well as how they choose what to adapt and reject from the modern world). "The arts of the Maroons," they write, "forged in an inhospitable rainforest by people under constant threat of annihilation, stand as an enduring testimony to African-American resilience and creativity." --Eugene Holley Jr.Book Description
Cultural Vitality in the African Diaspora Lavishly illustrated with more than 350 images, this groundbreaking new book traces traditions in woodcarving, textiles, clothing, and jewelry created by the Maroon people of Suriname and French Guiana.

Awesome! .......2007-02-04
A documentary must have!.......2001-08-20
His best.......2001-01-03
This book focuses on the impact of crack cocaine in three eastern cities -- North Philadelphia, Harlem, and Red Hook, New Jersey.
Richards seems to have none of the fear that would stop most people, because his pictures bring a viewer over the comfort line to become shocking. The scenes exceed imagination. In fact, one of his pictures in this book was challenged for its authenticity because it seemed almost too perfect... In it, a women pauses to look at her John, her hands on his zipper, with her young child watching her. On a wall behind her, a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr. is displayed. Some black political leaders saw this picture and insisted that Richards must have set it up. He could only assert that he was truthful in his portrayal.
Truth is always stranger than fiction. This might be photojournalism's answer to magical realism: there is a wickedness and abandon to this world. The cover picture is another example -- the photograph shows an addict holding a syringe in his mouth. His eyes gleam in a way that suggests the insanity in the spirit of this individual.
Richards is for the most part a photographer who works inside America. Some domestic photographers lament that all of the best photographs are made in wars, and that the situations in our home communities preclude us from being able to make great pictures. Eugene Richards shows how this is false. He takes horrifying pictures in Long Island, in Philadelphia, in West Virginia, in Kansas City.

Hellbent: The Art Of Flint Henry
Flint Henry Manufacturer: SQP Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Perfect Paperback ASIN: 0865621128 |
Product Description
Flint Henry's artwork has graced the pages of many comic companies over the years, including First, DC, and Marvel. From Grimjack to ManBat, his interpretations of standard superhero fare have always been darker and more twisted than most. There s a very good reason for that. He s darker, and more twisted! With an inky-black sense of the macabre and a devilish delight in detail, Flint can create some of the most nightmarish and densely disturbing images imaginable - but all with a sly wink! As horrifying as the subject or as maddening the situation, you can always hear the low rumble of a chuckle, as if to say "oh, just kidding!". In this first collection of his drawings, Hellfire stares into the abyss of Flint's intricate delirium, and refuses to blink! Foreword by noted comic writer Chuck Dixon.Customer Reviews:

Teaching in a Cold and Windy Place: Change in an Inuit School
Joanne Tompkins Manufacturer: University of Toronto Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0802080308 |
Book Description
Joanne Tompkins travelled to the Baffin Island community of Anurapaqtuq to take on the job of principal at the local school. This is the fascinating story of her experiences in the four years she spent there and the many challenges she faced.
On her arrival in the Inuit village, Tompkins found struggling teachers and failing students in a community that was grappling with social and economic change. Outlining strategies that worked and others that failed, she gives a vivid account of the day-to-day trials and rewards that she and community members experienced as they worked to create a productive and exciting school environment.
This engaging and informative account of change in an Inuit school will be of great use to educators and administrators, and appeal to general readers as well. One educator who read the manuscript paid it the compliment of comparing it to Sylvia Ashton-Warner's classic tale of teaching Maori children, Teacher.
Customer Reviews:
Title doesn't exactly deliver what it promises, but still ok.......2003-04-29
Having said that, however, there are a few problems with the book:
1) It was much, much too short. Tompkins repeated herself quite a bit, which would be acceptable had the book been longer than 130 pages or so. Also, I found that she didn't go into much detail in regards to actual situations; more ancedotes to illustrate her points would have been welcome.
2) The book was written from the perspective of a principal, not a teacher. Tompkins was a very active principal, working alongside her staff, but most of the advice will be useless unless you're actually in a position of authority in a school. Don't get me wrong -- Tompkin's model is *exactly* how a school should work, but as I said, it will help administrators more than in-the-trenches teachers.
3) I realise that there are not as many secondary schools in NWT/Nunavut as elementary schools, but it was a bit of a shock to realise that the entire book was written from the perspective of a worker in an elementary school. Understandably, if you're a primary (or even middle years) educator this will not disturb you as much as it did me.
Being a secondary school planning on teaching in Nunavut, this book was decidedly less helpful than I had anticipated. However, if you match the target audience (principal of an elementary school), don't let the book's brevity disturb you!

The Legacy of Shingwaukonse: A Century of Native Leadership
Janet E. Chute Manufacturer: University of Toronto Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0802042732 |
Book Description
This book examines the careers of the Ojibwa chief Shingwaukonse, also known as Little Pine, and of two of his sons, Ogista and Buhkwujjenene, at Garden River near Sault Ste Marie. Theirs was a period in which the Great Lakes Ojibwa faced formidable challenges from entrepreneurs, missionaries, and bureaucrats, as well as from new policies set by the Canadian state. Shingwaukonse sought to establish links with the new government agencies, to preserve an environment in which Native cultural values and organizational structures could survive, and to devise strategies to enable the formation of band governments capable of assuming a degree of proprietorship over the resources on Native land.
Using an impressive array of evidence from a huge range of government, church, manuscript, and oral sources, Chute reconstructs a period of energetic and sometimes effective Aboriginal resistance to pressures visited on the community. She demonstrates that Shingwaukonse and his sons were vigilant in their attempts to maximize the autonomy and security of the Garden River Ojibwa even while many other parties insisted on their assimilation.
The Legacy of Shingwaukonse contributes greatly to anthropological debates about Ojibwa leadership and to a historical understanding of the relationship between Native peoples and newcomers throughout the nineteenth century.
