Book Description

Building small can be a sign of higher ambitions, and those who take the time to peruse these pages will undoubtedly grow to appreciate that creating a small home can be an amazingly positive and creative act, one which can enhance life in surprising ways. The Very Small Home presents stunning design advances in Japan. Eighteen recent houses, from ultramodern to Japanese rustic, are explored in depth. Particular emphasis is given to what the author call the Big Idea-the overarching concept that does the most to make the house feel more spacious than it actually is. Among the Big Ideas introduced here are ingenious sources of natural light, well-thought-out atriums, snug but functional kitchens, unobtrusive partitions, and free-flowing circulation paths. An introduction by the author puts the house designs in the context of lifestyle trends, and highlights their shared characteristics. For each project, the intentions of the designers and occupants are examined. The result is a very human sensibility that runs through the book. A glimpse of the dreams and aspirations that these unique homes represent and that belies their apparent modesty. The second half of the book is devoted to illustrating the special features in the homes, from clever storage and kitchen designs, to ingenious skylights and nooks. As with his earlier Small Spaces, Azby Brown has given home owners, designers, and architects a fascinating new collection of thought-provoking ideas.

5 out of 5 stars you'll want one of these houses.......2007-06-15

gorgeous and inspired houses. the creativity will amaze you ^_^
you will probably be jealous of the people who actually live in the houses in the book.

2 out of 5 stars 1700sqft are BIG and luxurious in Hong Kong.......2007-04-18

"Small" is a matter of perspective, especially if you live in a 700sqft apartment and expect to get some ideas to use in small 300-450sqft apartments on Hong Kong Island.

2 out of 5 stars It's ok but not to Canadian code.......2007-04-04

The book is full of ideas but most not really practical when it comes to code and fire safety issues in canada. I was expecting more out of this book.......... slightly dissapointing.

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-14

Japanese design is different to Western design in terms of living requirements.

I now have a much deeper understanding of the creation of small living spaces that work well rather than building bigger for re-sale or convention.

Hopefully, my own home (when built) will be an east-west fusion that I will enjoy for a long time.

This book is part of my collection on 'small home' design and one which I return to when I need to remind myself about scaling down.

Anthropologists Sally and Richard Price transport us into the ancient world of the Saramanka and Ndyuka Maroon, who live in the rainforests of the South American countries Suriname and French Guyana and are possibly the most African people in the Americas. These descendants of slaves were brought to that region nearly 500 years ago by Dutch traders, but they rebelled, escaped, and formed autonomous communities that have survived for centuries. By examining their art--a robust potpourri of Afro-Amerindian-influenced anthropomorphic figurines, calabash bowls, embroideries, hair-braiding patterns, dances, drums, finger pianos, and paintings--the authors also detail how these brave and proud people contended with colonial powers, coups, corporations, shady art dealers, and the assault of modern civilization on their cultural values (as well as how they choose what to adapt and reject from the modern world). "The arts of the Maroons," they write, "forged in an inhospitable rainforest by people under constant threat of annihilation, stand as an enduring testimony to African-American resilience and creativity." --Eugene Holley Jr.

    Book Description

A compelling portrait of three communities penetrated by drugs and isolation: East New York, North Philadelphia, and the Red Hook housing projects in Brooklyn, New York.

With a chilling and informative afterword by Dr. Stephen W. Nicholas, who works as a pediatric AIDS physician in Harlem, Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue reveals how first steps toward solutions to overcome the drug trade have actually contributed to public denial and further isolation of the trapped communities. Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue is a history of our times, a compelling, terrifying document that will educate us and promote dialogue, a first step toward affecting change.

Mr. Richards is America's greatest living photojournalist. The depth of his social commitment to his subjects is equaled only by his amazing ability to compose the picture perfectly.

    5 out of 5 stars A documentary must have!.......2001-08-20

Eugene Richards, one of the worlds best photojournalist, has a gift to not only photograph well but also write about his subjects equally as well! He shows the world a part of this world many do not see nor wish to see. This is one of those photo books that a good photographer must have to essentially help to chisel a path in the photography world for themselves! Taking this style to learn and grow from! One can learn much by the raw and realness of Richard's Cocaine life pictorial!

    5 out of 5 stars His best.......2001-01-03

Cocaine true, Cocaine Blue represents the best of Eugene Richards. If Robert Capa's maxim about your pictures being close to be good is true, then Richards work is hands down about as close as anyone is getting.

This book focuses on the impact of crack cocaine in three eastern cities -- North Philadelphia, Harlem, and Red Hook, New Jersey.

Richards seems to have none of the fear that would stop most people, because his pictures bring a viewer over the comfort line to become shocking. The scenes exceed imagination. In fact, one of his pictures in this book was challenged for its authenticity because it seemed almost too perfect... In it, a women pauses to look at her John, her hands on his zipper, with her young child watching her. On a wall behind her, a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr. is displayed. Some black political leaders saw this picture and insisted that Richards must have set it up. He could only assert that he was truthful in his portrayal.

Truth is always stranger than fiction. This might be photojournalism's answer to magical realism: there is a wickedness and abandon to this world. The cover picture is another example -- the photograph shows an addict holding a syringe in his mouth. His eyes gleam in a way that suggests the insanity in the spirit of this individual.

Richards is for the most part a photographer who works inside America. Some domestic photographers lament that all of the best photographs are made in wars, and that the situations in our home communities preclude us from being able to make great pictures. Eugene Richards shows how this is false. He takes horrifying pictures in Long Island, in Philadelphia, in West Virginia, in Kansas City.

Flint Henry's artwork has graced the pages of many comic companies over the years, including First, DC, and Marvel. From Grimjack to ManBat, his interpretations of standard superhero fare have always been darker and more twisted than most. There s a very good reason for that. He s darker, and more twisted! With an inky-black sense of the macabre and a devilish delight in detail, Flint can create some of the most nightmarish and densely disturbing images imaginable - but all with a sly wink! As horrifying as the subject or as maddening the situation, you can always hear the low rumble of a chuckle, as if to say "oh, just kidding!". In this first collection of his drawings, Hellfire stares into the abyss of Flint's intricate delirium, and refuses to blink! Foreword by noted comic writer Chuck Dixon.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE TWISTED ART OF FLINT HENRY.......2005-12-10

The first thing I would say about Flint Henry is that he is not your everyday SQP type of pin-up glamour artist. With a style unlike any of the other stable of artists Flint Henry is truly unique. As comic artist Henry has worked on such titles as Grimjack, Manbat, Punisher, and Lawdog, and was one of the most popular cover artists for Fleetway/Quality comics titles such as Judge Dredd. His pal, writer Chuck Dixon provides an introduction to Flint and his work of sometimes humorous, sometimes disturbing illustrations. The first thing I think of when I look at the exquisite detail of Henry's work is those old "Weird Oh's" trading cards and model kits of the 1960's. His work has that touch of the bizarre to it. The book is filled with demons, zombies and some of the most gruesome creatures ever put on paper along with some beautiful women.

Check out page 15 for a fantastic representation of Henry's work. A nude women, bound by thorny vines and enveloped by tiny, malicious demons that paw and bite at her and yet seem to worship her all at the same time. I am just astounded by the detail in the piece on page 25. A punky looking little nymph holding a cigarette in one hand and a bottle of vodka in the other, dressed in a bike chain belt, tennis shoes, spiked wrist bands, with a belly button pierced by a bullet on a ring, just sitting and chilling out. It's a powerfully evocative piece. On pages 50 & 51 we get a pair savage looking women adorned in chains, hooks, leather, and razor sharp claws. I also love the vampire on page 53, who is flipping off the reader and holding a demon's severed head.

Henry's book came as a real surprise to me as I was generally unfamiliar with his work. But he is a supremely talented artist and I look forward to seeing much more from him.

    Book Description

Joanne Tompkins travelled to the Baffin Island community of Anurapaqtuq to take on the job of principal at the local school. This is the fascinating story of her experiences in the four years she spent there and the many challenges she faced.

On her arrival in the Inuit village, Tompkins found struggling teachers and failing students in a community that was grappling with social and economic change. Outlining strategies that worked and others that failed, she gives a vivid account of the day-to-day trials and rewards that she and community members experienced as they worked to create a productive and exciting school environment.

This engaging and informative account of change in an Inuit school will be of great use to educators and administrators, and appeal to general readers as well. One educator who read the manuscript paid it the compliment of comparing it to Sylvia Ashton-Warner's classic tale of teaching Maori children, Teacher.

3 out of 5 stars Title doesn't exactly deliver what it promises, but still ok.......2003-04-29

First of all, even though the book was written before Nunavut, most of the cultural elements of the book are still valid. Also, being probably the only book that deals with teaching in an Inuit culture, it stands alone in terms of its significance.

Having said that, however, there are a few problems with the book:

    1) It was much, much too short. Tompkins repeated herself quite a bit, which would be acceptable had the book been longer than 130 pages or so. Also, I found that she didn't go into much detail in regards to actual situations; more ancedotes to illustrate her points would have been welcome.

    2) The book was written from the perspective of a principal, not a teacher. Tompkins was a very active principal, working alongside her staff, but most of the advice will be useless unless you're actually in a position of authority in a school. Don't get me wrong -- Tompkin's model is *exactly* how a school should work, but as I said, it will help administrators more than in-the-trenches teachers.

    3) I realise that there are not as many secondary schools in NWT/Nunavut as elementary schools, but it was a bit of a shock to realise that the entire book was written from the perspective of a worker in an elementary school. Understandably, if you're a primary (or even middle years) educator this will not disturb you as much as it did me.

Being a secondary school planning on teaching in Nunavut, this book was decidedly less helpful than I had anticipated. However, if you match the target audience (principal of an elementary school), don't let the book's brevity disturb you!

It's been said Peter Forsberg has the meanness of Messier, the dirtiness of Linseman, the smarts of Gretzky, and the strength of Trottier--and this lively biography, filled with fantastic photos of the superstar in action, proves just how true this statement is. He has won the Calder Memorial Trophy as best rookie of the year and, in 1995-96, had a terrific 116-point season that propelled his team to the Stanley Cup victory. But, perhaps his greatest moment of glory came when he made Swedish hockey history by scoring against Canada in a sudden-death shootout to clinch the Olympic gold medal in Lilliehammer. In honor of that achievement, Sweden issued a postage stamp bearing his image!

Every person thinking of having a child within the next couple of years should read this book. So should every woman using any sort of contraception.

Francesca Naish outlines the pros and cons of the different forms of contraception, including their affects on pregnancy should conception occur, she looks at the female reproductive system and how it works, nutrition for preconception, and of course goes into great detail explaining the different forms of 'natural contraception' and how to use them separately or together for conscious conception or contraception.

      Book Description

The entirety of the British Civil War has never been covered in a single volume--until now. While it is usually seen as an English conflict, Royle paints the picture on a large canvas to show that it engulfed the entirety of Great Britain. While the war began as the result of the Scots' unwillingness to accept Charles I's prayer book, their obstinacy inspired the Irish Catholics to rise against their English and Scot oppressors with the result that fourteen years internecine fighting was to be the norm for these islands. This is grand narrative military history at its best and a monumental achievement.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The fog of war history cleared.......2006-04-23

War can be a confusing time, and many are the wars fought over a long period for reasons that are hard to fathom. The English Civil War is, I think, one such case. In Civil War, Trevor Royle has taken some effort to sort out the convoluted happenings that led to and unfolded during the fighting.

Throughout, Royle takes the time to explain that the war took place in three kingdoms, so the term English Civil War is perhaps a misnomer. The subtitle is The Wars of the Three Kingdoms 1638-1660, and this makes a more descriptive and accurate term. However, it is the action in England and Scotland that is more dominant, with Ireland playing a seemingly lesser role in the overall events.

The book is exhaustive in its approach, sparing little in the detail. This can make for confusing reading for the reader, such as myself, who is mostly unfamiliar with the events and persons involved. All too often I found myself wondering which general was on which side and forgetting what brought the armies together at a particular time and place. As another reviewer has pointed out, there is a strong emphasis on military actions, particularly once the fighting begins. In the beginning and again at the end, Royle does try to bring it all together, with discussion on how the war was remembered in the popular consciousness that even includes brief mention of the much later American Revolution. Overall, however, the style is demanding of the reader. With proper attention, the interested reader can obtain clear and valuable insights into the issues that led to and came from the war and how it all influenced the subsequent development of British history.

      4 out of 5 stars Primarily a military history.......2005-08-16

This is primarily a history of the various and confusing wars in the Stuart/Cromwell era rather tha the political or religious issues. The book's greatest strength is the way it connects the events in the three kingdoms -- England, Ireland, and Scotland --which is essential to see the overall picture in a confusing time. This Royle does well. I would have liked more discussion of the religious issues and a bit less on the battle details, but otherwise a fine history.

              Book Description

This book examines the careers of the Ojibwa chief Shingwaukonse, also known as Little Pine, and of two of his sons, Ogista and Buhkwujjenene, at Garden River near Sault Ste Marie. Theirs was a period in which the Great Lakes Ojibwa faced formidable challenges from entrepreneurs, missionaries, and bureaucrats, as well as from new policies set by the Canadian state. Shingwaukonse sought to establish links with the new government agencies, to preserve an environment in which Native cultural values and organizational structures could survive, and to devise strategies to enable the formation of band governments capable of assuming a degree of proprietorship over the resources on Native land.

Using an impressive array of evidence from a huge range of government, church, manuscript, and oral sources, Chute reconstructs a period of energetic and sometimes effective Aboriginal resistance to pressures visited on the community. She demonstrates that Shingwaukonse and his sons were vigilant in their attempts to maximize the autonomy and security of the Garden River Ojibwa even while many other parties insisted on their assimilation.

The Legacy of Shingwaukonse contributes greatly to anthropological debates about Ojibwa leadership and to a historical understanding of the relationship between Native peoples and newcomers throughout the nineteenth century.
