The Western Guide to Feng Shui.......2007-06-27

I purchased this book for a friend because I already had a copy. Its a straightforward compilation of the Feng Shui Bagwa map. I have several other books and they are complicated and confusing. This book lays out the theory and shares some stories of changing the decor according to the feng shui principles. I enjoyed reading it and I have enjoyed moving things around in my house.

Feng Shui may not change your life, but if by taking the time to balance your surroundings, you also balance your life, isn't that something special? I am having fun with this just making my home more pleasant.

Just Ok.......2007-03-24

Most of the other reviews I've read must have been written by someone who has never read any Feng Shui books before. This book is OK for a beginner, but I borrowed some from my local library that were a bit older, but way better, and with much nicer pictures and more specific fixes and cures. I also bought the Room by Room from the same author and so far I'm a little disappointed. It has a lot of examples but it's not very well written, and it could use more illustrations, and even suggestions on where to buy the crystals and other cure items.

I have a hard time actually judging if these books are good or bad, being that I don't really have much of a Feng Shui background.

However, the book was easy to read and covered a lot of ground- especially if you wanted to know more about Bagua maps. The advice wasn't too out there, but the examples seemed a little over the top at times.

Overall, it wasn't a bad read, and if it doesn't work for you, then move the furniture again! :)

I have this author as an art history teacher and I love the way he teaches. Most teachers teach directly from a book, making students memorize facts, where this teacher makes students think. I haven't finished the entire book yet, but I love what I have read!

Cinematic Motion, by Steven Katz, published by Michael Wiese Productions, is another one of those absolutely must-have books for serious filmmakers. The subtitle, A Workshop for Staging Scenes, is just what this valuable resource and reference manual is...a workshop in a book! It's unique in that it is written from the film director's viewpoint. The focus of the book is on creative visual staging of each scene, and the storyboards and diagrams are clear, consistent and workable. Katz shows you how to choreograph scenes and create illusions, as needed, through blocking, camera movement, moving an actor or actors in a scene, and staging, in scenes with confined spaces up to large spaces, interiors and exteriors. The interviews with director John Sayles (The Secret of Roan Inish; Passion Fish; City of Hope) and production manager Ralph Singleton (Pet Sematary II; Clear and Present Danger; Last Man Standing) are very informative and helpful for the beginning filmmaker and the experienced filmmaker alike.

This fine, detailed & user-friendly book opens up a director's view of the world of cinematic movement & how it relates to good story-telling through film. Staging scenes, blocking, camera movement, choreography of scene movent, reverse shots, camera angles, tracking, exterior & interior shooting, staging multiple characters in a scene...it's all here, with drawings that clearly illustrate the informative text.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning to compose better pictures of any kind. This unusual book takes a "through-the-lens" approach to presenting ideas about how to compose pictures. This is a refreshing break from abstract "art-babble" discussions that offer the reader little practical guidance about where to point the camera. In addition to video and film, still photographers will find this book especially interesting.

The only sound heard in the hushed auditorium packed with 400 proud parents was his shoes hitting the concrete aisle. The child in charge of the record player reached me as I sat in the last seat in the back row. "Mr.Rose, " he said in a quiet voice, "I forgot the records." "Get them - hurry up!" I said through clenched teeth and a pathetic smile. It took about two minutes as he rushed to the room, got the records, returned, and finally began the music for the dance. During the entire process the children, two sets of six on the stage in circles and four sets of children in front of the stage stood straight without moving or talking. The class went on to perform, dances, songs, and skits for one and a half hours. Not once did I do or say anything after giving him the room key. I sat in the back as my very competent and independent sixth graders made me so proud that I kept fighting tears. More of what they did that day is in the book. SWAT made simple.......2006-06-05

Very simple yet elaborate enough to get some depth of SWAT. I'm not a law enforcer but just wanted to know more about SWAT. This book helped me a lot understand many aspects of SWAT such as Hostage Negotiations, Site Assault, Perimeters and Security, Team Work, etc. Very good read, and it has some useful pictures too.

Good as Introduction to SWAT.......2003-08-13

This is a good introductory book for a person interested in finding out more about SWAT. However, it's little more than review for any law enforcement officer familiar with the basic SOP's and structure of their department's team. It is mostly anecdotal evidence and uses the same "suspect takes hostage, SWAT kills suspect or suspect surrenders" storyline to illustrate why those SOP's and structure exists.

This book is not a good book for people that are interested in learning SWAT tecnics and tactics. This book is a good book for people that are interested in SWAT storys.
Ovcourse that you learn something by reading these real life SWAT situations but is not enougth for someone that practices airsoft.

Good book, but..........2003-01-11

This is a good book about SWAT how they work and all kind of different missions they do. It gives good information about SWAT and how they work. BUT I must say that this book don't "show" anything new! Everything is SOP ( and I am not a police officer) and it says the book show how to improve tactics-well it shows NOT!! It show some things, but...but how should I say- basic. The author could go much deeper into this I think. The book is good written but if you are looking to improve your tactics, well then this book is not for you. And like someone said "sometimes it is little TOO American" and I agree...
Good book for beginners and people who want to know how it is inside SWAT. For others, well maybee a good read but that's it.

This book is a like a manual. It starts out by telling how that cop's life is going to be when he signs up for the team he has always wanted to be a part of. It's gives that feeling, that if you make it then you are the best. It not only shows the pain to become the best and the life of being the best, but it also shows the tragedy that follows our lives. Our destiny, Death. It shows this is a way we'd rather not see it, but in the way that it really is. It sort of helps to calm those whom have lost their partner in an operation like this by telling the world their pain. And in it those who have this pain now have a place to turn to because their dearest freinds and closest family members have a generl idea of what it is like for them. For the seargents and veterans who train these cops, but even all their knowledge and experience can't save them. It shows how inevitable death is. But most importantly of all, it shows the men and women who have the courage to put forth their own life to help make hundreds of others safer.
SWAT Teams is what I call a first look book. It can be considered a career book because of its factual information. It talks about all the components needed to run a well trained SWAT Team. And it contains information from how an officer is to be traied to what type of weapons he must use. It also provides real stories about their horroric efforts. Including those that have succeeded and those that have failed. One story that started the idea of a SWAT Team and is by far one of the scarriest stories in the book is, The Texas Tower Sniper. Here a man went up to the clock tower of the University of Texas an began shooting the students and teachers on the campus. When the police arrived they became his next target. After an hour and a half Chief Miles ordered an assualt by through the use of armored cars on the shooter. They used the armored cars to get close enough to safely get into the building. Here they traveled to the top of the building and eliminated him.
This is just one of the many stories inside this book. It is a mindturning book and I strongly reccomend it for any person who has a dream to become a SWAT officer or who already is.

appealing title & that's all!.......1998-04-22

The author doesn't really discuss the topic as "advertised" by his book's title & its subtitle. I expected a discussion on the human mechanism to create its own personal reality based on a person's perceptions of the external world. Instead he writes about evolution particularly that of the biosphere -- which is a nice discussion. He "dances" around merging intuition & reason, I guess because he has very foggy notions on how to do it. So he just dangles the topic in front of his readers. I concur wholeheartedly with Salk that morals & ethics is strictly & purely a human creation, that they have no basis in supernatural "things" or mental creations. It's just us humans down here, trying to live from day to day hopefully with some measure of meaningfulness. At least the book is very short. If Salk's book were a long one, I'm sure it would have been unbearably tedious & pedantic. But if one's never thought about the power of evolution & asked why or how come there's living things on this planet, this book would trigger some good thinking.
