I purchased this text as a required reference material for a college interior design course. It is packed with useful information and I anticipate referring to it often. Also, the Amazon price is much less than the campus bookstore!

While there is a lot of information in this book, most of it is too small to read or see easily. Many of the drawings are too small and unclear. Also, the material is not presented in a way that makes it easy to access. I will be looking elsewhere for the information. I sent mine back in spite of the shipping cost.

This new publication, the third in our Contemporary Artist Series, engages work by conceptual artist William Anastasi in relation to literary and artistic predecessors and contemporaries including Jarry, Joyce, Duchamp, and Cage. This publication is edited by Aaron Levy and Jean-Michel Rabaté, with contributions by William Anastasi, Joseph Masheck, Thomas McEvilley, and Steve McCaffery, and an introduction by Osvaldo Romberg. In addition, nearly 40 manuscript pages from William Anastasi's manuscripts "me innerman monophone" and "du jarry," engaging Joyce and Duchamp via Jarry, are reproduced in the book, alongside 10 pages of reproductions of Anastasi's work from the 1960s. By showing concretely that many passages in Finnegans Wake contain buried allusions to Jarry's characters and vocabulary and personality, Anastasi is not simply annotating Joyce's masterpiece; he provides a new way of reading all avant-garde literature. If Jarry is shown to be somewhere in Joyce's texts, how can we be sure that he is not everywhere?

At Twelve is Sally Mann's revealing, collective portrait of twelve-year-old girls on the verge of adulthood. To be young and female in America is a time of tremendous excitement and social possibilities; it is a trying time as well, caught between childhood and adulthood, when the difference is not entirely understood. As Ann Beattie writes in her perceptive introduction, "These girls still exist in an innocent world in which a pose is only a pose-- what adults make of that pose may be the issue." The consequences of this misunderstanding can be real: destitution, abuse, unwanted pregnancy. Mann does not deny this reality, but records it, both in the faces of her subjects and in written stories that accompany thirteen of the portraits, adding another dimension to our understanding of "childhood."
The young women in Mann's unflinching, large-format photographs, however, are not victims. They return the viewer's gaze with a disturbing equanimity. Poet Jonathan Williams writes, "Sally Mann's girls are the ones who do the hard looking in At Twelve-- be up to it!" Partly this is a result of the remarkable rapport that Mann is able to establish with her subjects.
Herself the mother of three, Mann has lived most of her life in Lexington, Virginia, where all of these pictures were taken. In fact, many of the families of the young women were cared for by her father, who was the town doctor for over forty years. So while At Twelve is an intensely personal vision of what it means, now, to be twelve and female, each of Mann's subjects is allowed the opportunity to frankly return our wondering, reminiscent gaze and to have a history of her own, rooted in a specific place at a particular moment-- at twelve.

Better Off As Girls?.......2006-07-25
Sally Mann succeeds in showing girls on the cusp of womanhood, some of them appearing androgynous, others decidedly feminine. There are a few adults in these pictures, including friends and strangers. There is no nudity other than one of an infant lying reclined between a woman's legs, and neither person can be identified.
This is a "sensitive" subject, and the photographer/author is aware of it. In fact, one of her photographs is of a girl-turning-woman next to an older fellow, in his twenties. When you read the text, you discover the difficulty she had in getting the young lady to stand close to the man in the picture; some time after this photograph was taken, the girl's mother shot him in the face for "harassing" her daughter.
Viewing these girls on their birthdays, lounging with friends, or posing for Ms. Mann, it's easy to feel a pang that is something more than wistful: were there only a world where--girl or woman--they could finally be both natural and secure. Perhaps it is the source of Ms. Mann's great photographic power, that she confronts us with an issue present in life itself. Girls or women, one only wishes they could be happy and free, safe and valued for themselves.
Amazing, thought-provoking book.......2005-03-14
This is one of my favorite portrait photography books. It's often profoundly disturbing, with such poignant images capturing girls on the verge of womanhood, offering us glimpses not only into the children that they were but into the lives they're going to lead as women, and it isn't all pretty.
Sally Mann is wonderful at capturing the souls of those she photographs, often poor, rural-living individuals, full of pride and hopes and dreams. I have collected many of her books, and this has always been my favorite. It's very controversial - her work always has been - but if you look at it with your eye on that cusp of womanhood, you will see more than you ever dreamed.
Sally Mann is a true visionary photographer who will certainly be hailed in the years to come as one of the greatest photographers of her time.

save your money, this book is not worth it. The pictures are dull and lifeless, boring composition. Mann hasn't captured anything here but a bunch of worthless photos. Any 10th rate amateur photographer could have done better.
A total waste of money.......2004-07-17
Sally Mann hasn't a clue how to capture the souls of those she photographs! If you are looking for artistic shots of 12 year olds then this book isn't for you. The picture on the cover is deceiving about the books contents. You're better off with buying the David Hamilton books (oh and by the way he is much better at photographing his subjects than Sally Mann could ever hope to be).
Solidly beautiful pictures.......2003-02-24
Maybe I missed something. The pictures are beautiful, and they are supposed to be an attempt to capture the essence of young women on the cusp of becoming adults. What I got was pictures of young women-- missed the whole "becoming" thing. I could just be thick, but this one just passed me by devoid of any emotion.

the heart of a scholar ..........2001-08-05
In this brief but full autobiography, Elizabeth Achtemeier brings us full circle from her Oklahoma childhood, her theological education in New York and Germany, her years as wife and mother, and her unplanned vocation in teaching homiletics at a time when women were just beginning to enter the pulpit. Her prose is sharp, witty, but gentle too. Throughout this book, her theme is God's hand on her life, in joys and frustrations.
I especially enjoyed reading how she and her husband met and how their scholarship has complimented, rather than competed against, one another. I also think it is so important for retiring scholars to write such personal accounts, sharing with those who have admired their intellectual prose the humanity from which it stems. It is clear God is "not done" with her yet, noe with any who seek His voice.

This one book could make a big difference!.......2001-05-22
This was one of two books that made a big impact on me as a parent. (The other was "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen.") I was determined not to go down the path of screaming and smacking, but that is easier said than done. When I lose it, it's generally because I feel like I'm in a corner and have to do SOMEthing--even if it's wrong. With "The One Minute Scolding," I always knew what to do. I wasn't tempted to keep threatening instead of taking action, since it only took one minute.
You need to follow the directions--there's a joke around my house about the "10-minute scolding," because sometimes we would get carried away. But believe me, one minute is longer than it sounds--long enough to make a real impact on a child. It also forces you to pay attention and "catch" your kids doing something right, so you can mention it during the next One-Minute Scolding.
The best thing about the One-Minute Scolding is that it never makes things worse. Sometimes it works like a charm; other times, it has less impact. However, it never escalates things. That in itself is a blessing.
Buy a used copy if you can, and I hope this book goes back in print, because it's much needed. I see the author has some newer books out ("The One-Minute Mother" and "The One-Minute Father"). I haven't read them, but if it's by Spencer Johnson, how bad can it be?

The message of this book, stated concisely, is reprimand the child first, then say something positive. It's hard to remember to do this when you are emotionally involved, but it works.
If you have a naturalistic philosophy, you might be interested in this book. I read somewhere that adult apes deal with misbehaving juveniles by cuffing them first, then hugging them.
miracle method of child discipline.......2000-03-31
This book is full of common sense skills for discipling children of all ages... all the while working to raise the self esteem of both child and parents. Helped me teach my out of control preschooler self-discipline. He is now a resposible adult. I thank Dr Nelson for writing this great book.

This book has caused me great suffering........2003-03-10
I am a sophomore in highschool taking an AP class with this book. It has a lot of information, which I guess is a good thing if you are reading this for your own personal gain rather than being tested on it. However, it is so dense that it is difficult to pick up key ideas. Every piece of information is important on some level, and the tests I take, which my teacher got along with this book, also treat every fact as important. I wouldn't mind reading this book if I wasn't expected to have a photographic memory but it just doesn't do a good job of helping me understand key ideas in history. Well, if you have to read this in your history class I hope you have a good teacher to guide you along in the reading. Otherwise.... I hope your memory is better than mine!!
The earth and its people: a global history.......2001-03-05
Excellent book for senior high school-college-undergraduate studies, covering the broad field of world history. The text is structured in such a manner as to suit both brief studies of various areas and times, as well as more in depth, long term programs. A fascinating assortment of primary source excerpts have been included, from earliest human societies to issues facing humanity in the contemporary period. Though the text has a slight Western emphasis, it covers non-Western civilisations quite well.
Be prepared though for extensive reading. The complete set is very large, but shouldn't be an obstacle for those with a passion for both general and obscure history!
