A Treehouse of Your Own: A Step-by-Step Guide to Building an Amazing Treetop Retreat
ASIN: 0810949520 |
Book Description
Treehouses bring out the child in all of us. Serving as private retreats, guest houses, or play spaces for family and friends, these enchanting arboreal constructions lift our spirits, inspire our dreams, and offer the promise of freedom from adult worries. In this magical volume, Pete Nelson, a leading authority on treehouse design and the author of three previous books on the subject that have sold more than 200,000 copies, takes us on a fascinating around-the-world journey to discover how treehouses are designed, built, and enjoyed in a wide variety of cultures.
More than 35 treehouses are shown in 250 beautiful color images, from locations in China, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Italy, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, France, and elsewhere, all photographed especially for this book. Nelson, whose frequent appearances on Oprah and Good Morning America and in newspaper and magazine features have helped to spur the soaring popularity of the treehouse, also describes in detail the process of creating-for "kids" both young and old-a fun, safe, and environmentally responsible sanctuary in a tree. AUTHOR BIO: Pete Nelson is the author of three previous books on treehouses. He is also principal of Treehouse Workshop, Inc., a treehouse design and construction business in Seattle, and the president of his own residential design and construction firm based in Fall City, Washington.

Yes, nothing quite like giving one's friends good reviews on amazon!
isnt is nice when people with too much money can build tree-houses when so many americans must live in dumpy apartments or are homeless?
Its nice that those who have trust funds can build tree houses, while the rest of us are worrying about even having housing, especially with illegal and legal immigration saturating the rental market and drving out legal american citizens.
Come to think of it, how many people who build treehouses have rental properties in slum areas ? I know of one who does.

I bought this book for my boyfriend (30) and he loved it. I enjoyed it just as much. The pictures are amazing and the stories that went with them were just as great. Great book to leave on the coffee table!
Great book.......2007-01-10
My 13 yo son loves treehouses and loves to read non-fiction books, so this was the perfect choice for him. I hear "WOW" over and over when he is reading this book!
Ultimate Treehouses.......2006-03-26
Looking at this book is perfect for day dreamers like me. It shows the most amazing possibilities for many types of treehouses. I haven't gotten to the point of reading the practical information but it is there for when I need it.
Treehouses of the World.......2006-03-16
A great coffee table book. Amazing structures built by creative,fun-loving people (some with more money than sense). Made me want to build another tree house, and I am 76 years old.

Beautiful.......2004-06-04
This book is beautiful. It is a very helpful reference and it is just fun to look at. It was also great to have the description of each of the outfits. This book is much more detailed than the "80 Godey's Full-Color Fashion Plates (1838-1880)" by JoAnne Olian, but then I liked all the full -colored as well.
Godey's A guide book to Civil War Fashion.......2000-07-31
This is an excellent reference guide for Lady Civil War Reenactors who want to create beautiful day dresses and ball gowns. The book has detailed descriptions of each dress. A true Godey's dress was for the lady of wealth, however many women of average means subscribed to Godey's to get ideas for the dresses they wore. Each page will give you an idea of colors, styles and types of fabrics used. This book is a must along with "Who Wore What" for a true insight into women's fashions of the 1860's

A delightful book to page through. Lots of black & white line drawings and several color plates. This must have been where Scarlett O'Hara got her inspirations!

Pleasantly Surprised.......2006-03-14
I bought this book on a whim because I was able to get such a good price on it. I'm really glad I made the investment.
Normally, I'm not a big fan of planar travel, but this book changed my mind. Inside, you will find a large number of clearly and concisely explained concepts that make adding Planes and Planar travel into your game a snap.
I've always found D&D's Great Wheel concept of the Planes confounding and overly complex. Portals and Plains ditches the wheel. Instead, it provides you with sample planes and ways to integrate them. There's even a handy table for creating random planes using die rolls.
I was especially fond of the more sci-fi oriented concepts like wormholes that connect two places on the same plane together. There are also new spells that allow even low level casters to take advantage of limited planar travel. The new monsters and planar races are an added bonus that form a large part of the book.
The first chapter of the book was the only weak part for me. The guides for how to best utilize the core classes when traveling through the planes is interesting, but the new Prestige Classes and feats just take up space. But then, I'm not a Prestige Class fan.
All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase and recommend it to anyone who wants to integrate the Planes into their game.
A good complement to the other Legends & Lairs books........2006-03-07
If you purchase WoC's Manual of the Planes, then this book has alternative/redundant rules for many of the points covered. However, I don't always find WoC's rules as useful as the alternatives...

Book Description
The story of a Quaker woman from Henry County, Indiana, who taught in the Friends Schools in Ramallah, Palestine, between the years 1922 and 1954. She returned for 6 months in 1963. In her own words: "My life with the Arabs was rich and satisfying. Their warmth and hospitality can never be described. Their kindness and eager sharing in the work for Palestinian youth was a joy that was far beyond my hopes."
Customer Reviews:
Poorly Written, Little to Offer.......2002-07-03
This story of Mildred White could have easily been a lot better. It follows her life, giving background on the Quaker history in America and specifically Indiana, and the history of Mildred's family. It follows her call to go to Palestine, and gives some background on the history of the Friends school in Ramallah. Then, with the use of narrative and actual letters, Jordan tells the story of White's life- her time in Palestine and her trips back to the U.S.
But to say "story" is really too kind. The writing is simply too dry, and not at all gripping. It's frankly bad writing. I found myself having to skim through large sections. This was more of an individual's admittedly laudable desire to put to paper some of her own family history- as Lois is Mildred's niece. And it is of more interest to those who are related to the Whites and the Jordans. This is truly a shame, as one gets hints of a many amazing events that happen in Mildred's life- she lives through the rise of Zionism and al nakba, or The Catastrophe, when the ethnic cleansing of the Arabs from Palestine occurred. Jordan shares some of that time, but it's squeezed into a couple chapters, and the stories mentioned take up a paragraph at a time. She simply doesn't pull you in. It's not like you feel for any of the characters of this biography, including Mildred. It could be a textbook, except there's little information conveyed.
But there are also aspects of Mildred's life that lack real vividness. There is little sense of a great battle to wage, and a good fight well won. Zeal could have been applied to service and non-violent action, but if it happened, it is not well communicated.
Two stars because of some history shared about Palestine in the 20's - 50's, and nice tidbits like that "Ramallah" used to be called "Ram Allah"- Hill of God. The book also serves to put a much more human face on the very oppressed Palestinian people. More books that do that are sorely needed. But Ramallah Teacher should largely be skipped.

The ULTIMATE hockey book!!!.......2006-03-07
I've owned this book for over 20 years, and I still pick it up from time to time to read it . .it is honestly that interesting and compelling. In no way would I consider myself as being a New York Ranger fan whatsoever. That being said, when I had finished reading this book, I found myself at times actually rooting for the Rangers in the playoffs based on the writing skill of "Ratso" Sloman. It is that good. If you can only read one hockey book in your lifetime, read this one.
Thin Ice is a must read !.......2002-12-17
It's absolutely asinine that this book was not among "The Top 100 Sports Books Of All Time" compiled by the staff of Sports Illustrated Magazine. It is a must read, you do not need to be a hockey or sports fan to enjoy this read, it is the "Ball Four" of hockey books. Don't miss it, if you can find it !
"Ratso" and the Manhatten Rangers !.......2001-03-13
Although I'm not a NY Ranger's fan by any stretch of the imagination, this book is a long forgotten classic and a must read for every hockey fan. "Ratso", (Larry Sloman) did a great job in profiling the NY Ranger players on and off the ice and he is able to insinuate, instances of sexcapades and drug use among the players and still protect their privacy, he takes us behind the scenes of the Manhatten party life with celebrities, models and hockey players. I was able to find this book in an old inner city library sometime in the late 70's, early 80's. The chance of you finding it now are slim and nil, but if you do get a hold of it, I'm sure you'll be glad you did.
Hmm ... Interesting.......1999-04-03
As JHRay has already mentioned ... it's funny how rbettendorf could review this book and find such information as: personal bios of Mark Messier, Brian Leetch, and Mike Richter as well as the rangers winning the Stanley Cup in 1994.
This book was published in 1981. Mess was in Edmonton and Richter and Leetch were still in high school my friend.
Prior review of a different book.......1999-01-25
On the off chance that anyone else is searching for this book, the other review posted is not a review of Sloman's book. As you can see, this book was published in 1982, years before the cup win in '94...
Sloman's book is about the late 70's and early 80's. He is friends with several Rangers, and writes about his experiences with them.
For a SERIOUS hockey fan, a great book. For a casual fan, probably a pass.
BTW, Sloman has been on Howard Sterns show many times.

Customer Reviews:
Maybe not for complete beginners.......2005-09-01
So far this is the only book I have seen, that systematically explores possibilities, even those nobody would wear in daily life.
For evening dresses there are other rules and the effect is surprising. To be fair, I tried it so far only with fabric scraps, but what I tried, worked as designed. What I like is that the effect is due only to the pattern, a plain fabric and no decoration still make a great dress, maybe even better than with a splendid pattern and a fabulous trim. Just plain fabric.
I have had great fun with this book. True, if you like me don't even know what a block is, other than associations from childhood about wooden cubes with letters on it, you need other books too. I showed this one to my sewing teacher. She explained how to interpret the instructions and told me what to read first about the basics. While I read about blocks, she read this book. She was very enthusiastic about it.
Other people think it a good book, too. That's how my first copy went (sold to sewing teacher) and the second one (replacement because somebody borrowed the first from her and apparently never returned it).
And now I would buy it for the third time, if the secondhand price was not that ridiculouly high for a paperback.
Anybody not totally satisfied with this book, you know what to do. Sell yours to me.
How to Draft a Strapless Bodice Sloper for Evening Wear!.......2003-08-01
This book is not for beginners in dress drafting. But even though I'm a novice, I did find the information informative... drafting dressy clothes requires starting with a different sloper rather than the slopers used in the drafting of regular daytime garments. The books on this subject are hard to find and limited, so this book would still be helpful for someone seeking information on drafting evening garments. I believe it is meant to be a supplement to further study. I would say that it would help someone who already is intermediate or advanced in drafting to start exploring drafting evening garments. I did enjoy this book very much!

Never judge a book by its cover!.......2002-11-12
I forgot the old adage and was seduced by the dazzling photo on the cover, but that was where my joy ended. To put it simply this book was very DISAPPOINTING!
My first problem was that after the author went into a lengthy diatribe about the importance of a well made primary block, (which all her secondary blocks are made from), she gave no instructions on how to make one.
The book continues along this vein of vagueness and half-explanations, which means one would need to have enough previous pattern-cutting experience in order to fill in the blanks. Therefore I would say this book is definetly NOT for beginners because most will be very confused.
I dont think the book will be very usefull to the advanced pattern cutter either because the styles she explains are very basic and you would probably have come across them in other patterncutting books where they were not being touted as "eveningwear".
The book also mentions draping in its title, which I find laughable as it covers draping on a total of THREE pages and with the exception of a cowl-neck top, I dont think ruching bits of fabric across the shoulders really qualifies as draping.
Suffice to say I do not recommend this book to ANYONE, as I found it totally useless, and I only gave it one star for the pretty picture on the cover which I shall frame to remind me CAVEAT EMPTOR!

Very Good Book.......2007-10-04
Having read this author's biography of Lincoln (Malice Toward None) I was so impressed with his writing style and story telling that I wanted to stick with him.
This book reads well. I recommend it. I enjoyed it. The book reads like a novel and seemed fairly comprehensive, thought it's under 400 pages and moves along at a comfortable pace. It provides plenty of food for thought about Brown. Having always heard that Brown was a mad-man, I was pleased to find that his story is much more than that.
As far as dismissing John Brown as a crazy, consider how many renowned people of his day he befriended and persuaded to back his endeavors! Were they all crazy too?
The book revealed for me the political / social / religious dynamics of those wild times in a meaningful way. If the issue of John Brown comes up for discussion, I now feel confident to participate.
Solid history and decent prose........2007-06-22
There are a lot of books on Brown, for good reason. He is a fascinating figure, a sort of mythical creature. Many books dumb this aspect down through their soggy prose and endless fact-logging, but the prose in this book is not too bad. Oates doesn't relate too much worthless information, which is common in the social sciences. I remember reading one Brown biography that debated whether his cabin was made out of pine or oak. Many historians cannot understand that not all pieces of information were created equal.
Seriously though, the prose here is decent and the history seems fairly accurate. There are some passages that are poetic in their way, and I was affected by many aspects of Brown's personality and U.S. History that Oates managed to describe quite well. Times of revolution can make for excellent reading, especially when the world today seems very difficult to change. Brown tried to change it, and in the minds of many, he did. So, for those unfamiliar with Brown, he makes for a good story.
It is obvious at times that Oates is angling to not "alienate" the Southern reader. He talks about how Southerners "had a right to be scared" and makes the argument that slavery-accepting Southerners were not such bad people, etc. Racism was widespread, only slightly less so in the North, so this is partially reasonable. However, there is hardly any material about how disgusting slavery really was. There are good reasons that John Brown was violently opposed. Basically, Oates is trying to be "balanced." What that means is he is giving both sides of the argument, even when one of them has been proven to be self-evidently stronger. Slavery was wrong, and it died out, and good riddance to the Southerners who accepted and perpetuated it.
If you want to read about how nasty slavery really was, and I recommend that you do if you are open-minded about judging characters such as Brown, then you can start with some of the slave narratives, for example the narratives of Frederick Douglass and Mary Prince.
John Brown was one of the few people who doesn't just stand around and watch while injustices abound. He acts, and that is the reason that many cannot stand him. He is a profoundly moral person, and that is threatening to people who are not. They cannot understand that it is better to kill a thousand men then to let millions rot in slavery.
Highly recommended, just don't get thrown off by the "balance."
Strike the Blow- The Story of a Revolutionary Abolitionist.......2006-02-05
Please note that the substance of the following review has been used in the review of W.B. Dubois's book on John Brown reviewed elsewhere. Both books offer a good prospective on the life of John Brown and can be profitably read together. Dubois's book is a decent historical narrative of Brown's life from an earlier time and in a more partisan perspective. Oates book reflects more modern academic methods of analysis and research and tackles the weaknesses in other interpretations. In that sense, Oates book is close to the definitive study of John Brown's life. Most importantly, both books reflect a Northern view of Brown exploits previously long absent from the historical record. My review reflects the need to study an important American fighter for justice and for today's generation to learn some lessons from his life.
I would like to make a few comments on the role of Captain John Brown and his struggle at Harper's Ferry in 1859 in the history of the black liberation struggle. This is appropriate as I am writing this review during Black History Month of 2006. Unfortunately John Brown continues to remain one of the very few white heroes of the revolutionary struggle for black liberation.
From fairly early in my youth I knew the name John Brown and was swept up by the romance surrounding his exploits at Harpers Ferry. For example, I knew that the great anthem of the Civil War -The Battle Hymn of the Republic had a prior existence as a tribute to John Brown. I, however, was then neither familiar with the import of his exploits for the black liberation struggle nor knew much about the specifics of the politics of the various tendencies in the struggle against slavery. I certainly knew nothing then of Brown's (and his sons) prior military exploits in the Kansas wars against the expansion of slavery. If one understands the ongoing nature of his commitment to struggle one can only conclude that his was indeed a man on a mission. Those exploits also render absurd a very convenient myth about his `madness'. This is a political man and to these eyes a very worthy one. In the context of the turmoil of the times he was only the most courageous and audacious revolutionary in the struggle against the abolition of slavery in America.
Whether or not John Brown knew that his strategy would, in the short term, be defeated is a matter of dispute. Reams of paper have been spent proving the military foolhardiness of his scheme at Harper's Ferry. This misses the essential political point that militant action- not continuing parliamentary maneuvering advocated by other abolitionists- had become necessary. What is not in dispute is that Brown considered himself a true Calvinist avenging angel in the struggle against slavery and more importantly acted on that belief. In short, he was committed to bring justice to the black masses. This is why his exploits and memory stay alive after over 150 years.
Brown and his small integrated band of brothers fought bravely and coolly against great odds. Ten of Brown's men were killed including two of his sons. Five were captured, tried and executed, including Brown. These results are almost inevitable when one takes up a revolutionary struggle against the old order and one is not victorious. One need only think of, for example, the fate of the defenders of the Paris Commune in 1871. One can fault Brown on this or that tactical maneuver. Nevertheless he and the others bore themselves bravely in defeat. As we are all too painfully familiar there are defeats of the oppressed that lead nowhere. One thinks of the defeat of the Chinese Revolution in the 1920's. There other defeats that galvanize others into action. This is how Brown's actions should be measured by history.
Militarily defeated at Harpers Ferry, Brown's political mission to destroy slavery by force of arms nevertheless continued to galvanize important elements in the North at the expense of the pacifistic non-resistant Garrisonian political program for struggle against slavery. Many writers on Brown who reduce his actions to that of a `madman' still cannot believe that his road proved more appropriate to end slavery than either non-resistance or gradualism. That alone makes short shrift of such theories. Historians and others have misinterpreted later events such as the Bolshevik strategy which led to Russian Revolution in October 1917. More recently, we saw this same incomprehension concerning the victory of the Vietnamese against overwhelming military superior forces. Needless to say, all these events continue to be revised by some historians to take the sting out of there proper political implications.
The research is showing.......2001-03-12
In the preface of his book, author Oates states it is not his intention to determine the mental capabilities of his subject, abolitionist John Brown. But, he certainly paints a vivid enough picture so the reader can determine for himself if Brown is a crazy old coot, a cold blooded murderer, or a man on a mighty mission or a combination of all three. I had just read Cloudsplitter by Russell Banks (a fictionalized version of Brown's life; see my review) and it made me want to read a real biography of Brown. If anything, this book made me appreciate Banks' immagination even more. To Purge This Land with Blood is a very detailed account of Brown's life, maybe too detailed. Every character, no matter how inconsequential, is named. And this sea of names and places can be mindboggling. I found much of the book slow going and already knowing the outcome of Brown's life didn't compel me to move on quickly. But, after reading the book, I now believe I now know Brown. And isn't that the purpose of biography?
You don't know John Brown.......1999-11-29
If you were, like I was, taught that John Brown was not much more than a well-meaning madman then you don't know the John Brown of history. Oates does a great job of dispelling that myth as well as presenting for the first time the full picture, thoroughly footnoted, of the man who may have sparked the Civil War. I have small gripes with some of the text, but none worth mentioning here. Read it and be impressed.
