Product Description
Within the pages of this dazzling book, readers will find 20 of the most significant new homes designed by Bassenian/Lagoni Architects of Newport Beach, California. Inspired by the architecture of Southern Europe, yet totally new, these graceful, time-tempered homes display up-to-date floor planning, the finest amenities and picturesque landscaping. Built in the canyons and along the coasts of California, as well as in the deserts of Nevada, theses homes echo the architectural forms, textures and motifs of structures built in the hill towns of Tuscany and the plains of Andalusia. The homes range from stunning Tuscan courtyard homes in Rancho Santa Fe to a trio of walled and tiled Spanish/Andalusian designs in Irvine to an amazingly versatile family-recreation hacienda in Las Vegas. Each home is depicted by glorious color photographs, both inside and out, as well as a detailed site plan and colored floor plan with furniture in place. A special section for each major project entitled Its In The Details gives readers a close-up view of the architectural design and building details that make these homes extraordinary. A very helpful Annotated Projects List at the back of the book provides a complete listing of the builders, structural engineers, landscape architects and interior designers who contributed to each project. Also included in the book is a Forward by A. David Kovach, a distinguished housing marketer and design commentator, as well as an Introduction by Aram Bassenian, AIA and Carl Lagoni, AIA, Chairman/CEO and President, respectively, of Bassenian/Lagoni Architects. For consumers, this inspiring and well-crafted collection will serve as a valuable resource of ideas for design, landscaping and interiors created in the Old World style, but with a fresh California twist. For professionals and students, this remarkable book will provide examples of innovative floor planning, adept use of forms and materials and execution of a comprehensive design vision that has become the hallmark of Bassenian/Lagoni Architects.

Impressive, but . . .just a bit too "sterile".......2007-09-20
I must admit, their use of natural stone, brick, and the way they are able to manipulate concrete to create their desired effects is very impressive. Also, I'm sure these homes fit their particular market niche and are just what their clients are looking for -- no doubt they have the business and marketing end of things right on the mark. For this I will give them 3 stars. However, being a design book, I do have some criticisms. While many of the exterior elevations are extremely impressive, I found the interiors somewhat out-of-touch with true Tuscan style. I realize that is why it is called "reflections", but in most cases, they seemed way too "modern" in spirit -- they somehow lacked a European feel. They also seemed quite glossed and sterile -- almost soul-less. Although they seemed to have lots of room for a party, the way they were decorated would be monumentally disturbed or destroyed by even light revelry, not to mention if there were children or pets in the house. In some respects the design was outright dishonest, as one house had two garage entries whose doors were completely landscaped over. Now, maybe the landscaping is hardy enough to endure being driven over on a daily basis, but the broken impression was that they were trying to hide the garage access with landscaping and 'natural stone sidewalk, even though the garage doors themselves made no effort at all to conceal themselves. It seems very strange and un-natural. I would like to see a book with alittle more of the spirit of the design in it, not just all the, admittedly, beautiful building materials and craftsmanship which is clearly manifested in these houses -- and maybe that's it right there: these struck me more as expensive houses than as homes. I am glad I bought the book; I will definitely use it as a reference. I'm also glad I bought it from a used book dealer at a discount.
Building a house? You need this book! Fantastic!.......2007-08-24
Buy this book, its cheaper than an interior decorator!
Awesome ideas and the floorplan is included for every single home.
This book showcases the marrige of modern home and old world feel. Its a perfect blend and you could practically hand a page to an architect and say... I want that! Great source material for inspiration.
American dream houses.......2007-05-21
This book is beautifully presented and features some truly amazing HUGE American houses. To me it's just a bit too glossy though. The golden lighting and hosed down grounds and roads to make everything that little bit more shiny goes against the gritty, rustic, traditional houses I was looking for from Tuscany and Andalusia.
If you're looking to build a house, there's some great floor plans and architectural notes though.
Outstanding!.......2007-03-16
I truly love interior design, and this is one book that is beautifully done. I'm so very pleased with adding this book to my design collection. I highly recommend this one to anyone that would like more ideas and dreams for their homes.
Love It!

This book has received a Special Recognition for Paperback Cover Design from the 2001 Southern Books Competition. "Elements of playfulness and anger combine to produce a striking result. he really hits the mark with this collection. All the hidden sub-text and absurdity of the legal system, skewered, with a fiendish glint in his eye. A delight!
First, Get This Book, Then Kill All the Lawyers..........2001-08-23
Gerson is an extraordinary artist with a sardonic wit who we discovered at the Lemieux Gallery in New Orleans (www.lemieuxgallery.com) while at Jazz Fest. He apparently used to practice law there before he wised up and applied his considerable talents to the canvas full time. We were delighted to see another Gerson show in New York last summer and met the artist/author. For anyone who loves the legal profession (or loves to hate it), gerson's wickedly charming illustrations and bon mots is perfect. I'm sending this to all my legal beagle friends for the holiday.

Book Description
With more than a million visitors a year, Nantucket is a famed getaway, but only a few natives can attest to its mystic beauty in the fall and winter months. Among them is Cary Hazlegrove, whose Nantucket: The Quiet Season is the stunning follow-up to her celebrated Nantucket: Seasons on the Island. With Hazlegrove's signature photographs and evocative quotes from residents, this book captures what tourists rarely see: the island's hushed off-season life. Holiday hearths and cheery shopfronts provide warm refuge from chilly bogs and snow-blanketed dunes, revealing an island winter wonderland. With over one hundred images and a foreword by best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick, Nantucket: The Quiet Season offers a unique view of the island, allowing all to enjoy its multifaceted charm year-round.

Well done!.......2006-11-03
As a professional photographer and writer, there are a select few who fit the bill of "really great" for me. In this case, there are three photos in this book that make the whole book more than worth while having. Maybe a little heavy on the Christmas photos, but in all a very sensitive and introspective look at one of my favorite islands.
Another great book from Cary.......2006-09-04
Cary's pictures are always great, I have several of her books. I generally ignore the text as it can detract from the pictures at times. Cary - don't feel like you need someone's quotes....your pictures stand alone!!

Awesome series.......2004-05-12
Wow!!
I swear, everytime I read these books I fall in love with them over and over again. First off, this series is probably one of the funniest I've ever read. The characters are absolutely awesome and Onizuka rocks. He just plain rocks. This volume and volume 16 have reached a stunning climax of this last story arch, so exciting that I can hardly believe there are still over eight volumes left. In the last volume, we finally find out Urumi's secret that caused her to lose it all those years ago when she was a child. Miyabi, who displayed the secret to the whole school is contemplating suicide, since Urumi's revenge was making a x-rated website with spy cameras all around Miyabi's house. Onizuka has been stabbed by the vice principal. Urumi's wants to commit suicide as well if no one stops her in time. Miyabi's webisite is being hit by thousands of computer perverts. Azusa's stalker has finally snapped and is running away with her locked in a suitcase! The vice principal has sent a fax to every parent in the city stating that Onizuka is a pervert, horrible, disgusting teacher and now the whole school is in an uproar as everyone demands that Onizuka is fired. But the poor guy can't even defend himself because he has to find Urumi before she offs herself. Sheesh, all this one volume! Its crazy I tell ya! And that's not even the half of it! This series is one of the best!

Great Read.......2003-08-28
This is a fabulous book for hockey fans of all ages and even for non-hockey fans just interested in some Soviet history. The book details what it was like for a Harvard-educated young man to find himself in the midst of the Cold War. It is fascinating to learn about how the Soviets trained and the difficult environment that they lived in. The book truly makes one appreciate living here as we see how difficult it was for the author to live in the Soviet Union. The book is easy to read and very funny in places. I highly recommend it.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting book.......2001-10-17
This is one of the best books I have read on hockey. It is an easy read and believe me, once you pick it up it will be hard to put it down. If you love hockey, this is for you. It is a behind the scenes look at communist times Russia. It really opened my eyes to the hardships these players have to endure to make it in hockey. All along you are able to relate to all the Russian players, and to realize that they are so similar to us Americans!
My son is an aspiring NHL'er and he has agreed to read it. One of his trainers is mentioned in the book. I have read him passages and now we both have the greatest respect for this man. Just reading about what they have to endure, you will know just how privileged we are to live in the States.
I believe you won't be dissapointed if you read this book
get the record straight.......2001-07-11
I`m sorry to say that the real story of the first American to play hockey in the ussr should not be aboutTod Hartje but Bill McCormack.
From Behind The Red Line.......2000-12-29
I have not read a book for fun in 4 years! I am a college student, so I have read plent of required stuff, but nothing out of my own ambition. I happened upon this book in the bookstore the other day, and it looked interesting. I have now read it, and I liked it so much that I came here feeling I HAD to let other people know how good it was! I am sure it helps that I love hockey, and being from Detroit, I am automatically interested in russians and hockey. It was VERY INTERESTING, and also hilarious. The author wasn't afraid to tell of things such as the teams' joking about the size of a fellow teammates....um....dong. I hope i can atleast say that.
Anyhow, I loved it, and i hope you will to.
Great book.......2000-07-15
Great book. Gives great in sight to how life in Russia used to be for a hockey player (it is much different now).
Tod is a great man on top of it.
If I were you, I'd buy this book and once you open it, it will be hard to put it down.
Interesting Insight.......2000-07-03
Interesting book about a Harvard hockey player who voulenteers to be the first American to play in the Soviet hockey system in Kiev (Ukrania). The most interesting aspect of the book was seeing how the Soviet hockey system functioned then thru the eyes of someone who was there.
I found the conditions apalling: 11 months of training a year, living in army barracks-type quaters, eating greasy-gruel with no nutrition, no "personal recognition" when scoring a goal (it was considered a "team" effort and no celebration was allowed). It sounds like being a prisioner! Yet they produced a breed of hockey players superior to the "healthy and happy" North Americans! Go figure....
Now that the Russian hockey system is falling apart (as was apparent in their 2000 World Cup performance), it's interesting to look back at how the old system worked and think how can they improve their situation today.
Book Description
The time has come, argues Dr. Wess Stafford, for a major paradigm shift: Children are too important and too intensely loved by God to be left behind or left to chance. Children belong to all of us and we are compelled to intervene on their behalf. We must invest in children–all across the world.
There are strategic, persuasive reasons–beyond love and kindness–to invest in children. Today they may snuggle into your lap, if you let them. But tomorrow you may not have access to them in the corridors of power they might occupy. Now is the time to shape the future.
Dr. Stafford issues an urgent call for change. His adventures as a boy raised in a West African village provide an often-humorous and always-captivating backdrop to his profound and inspiring challenges. Wess lived the reality of “it takes a village to raise a child” and calls us to “be that loving village for children everywhere.”
This book will encourage you to turn your good, loving intentions into strategic actions and empower you to help change the world–and the future–forever: one child at a time.

Inspirational Eye Opener - rethink children's role in our priveledged society.......2007-09-03
This book is a wonderful eye opener that guides the reader through a journey of experiences on so many levels. A MUST READ for any and everyone who cares about the future of our society, our world - which is our children. It raises many questions that need our attention BOTH WORLD WIDE AND IN OUR PRIVELEDGED COUNTRY OF THE USA. As a Mother, the book speaks to my heart and covers so many topics I have thought about and struggled with as I am challenged to raise connected loving children in this priveledged distracted media intensive society.
Please read it and change the world one child at a time starting with the children you know. It can be done and the author explains how.
Then buy a copy for everyone you love.
A Must Read!.......2007-08-01
Every human being NEEDS to read this book! Children are our future and should be most important! A wonderful book and one that I will be passing on!
What Can I Say.......2006-12-13
What can I say that hasn't been said here in other reviews? A timely, riveting piece of writing. Highly, highly recommended.
Rick Evans Chaplain Childhelp Of Ohio
Too Small to Ignore.......2006-11-10
Informative, well written, and disturbing regarding the abuse that the author and other children suffer in terms of their caretakers. At the same time uplifting in terms of the author being able to overcome the effects of his childhood abuse.
An eye opener.......2006-11-05
Dr. Stafford forces us to think about the plight and condition of children outside the industrialized world. And after he makes the case for our consideration he gives us practical ways to help. If you care about the Third World and the countless masses of the next generation growing up there, this is a must read.
Customer Reviews:
Very well done.......2007-10-03
I grew up in the 70's and I was a big fan of Enemy Ace. The first time I read his adventures it was the three parter trilogy where he takes on Steve Savage aka The Balloon Buster. A few years later DC reprinted a couple of his stories and I was hooked.
So when DC published the archives and War In Heaven I was interested. It took me a few years to actually get around to buying them. I'm a 39 year old man with a family, job etc. Things tend to happen that cause distraction. But I finally got around to purchasing both archive volumes and a copy of War In Heaven.
It was worth the wait. As I got older and learned how to count years I realized that Hammer would only have been in his forties when WW2 began. I often wondered what the character would have done. Somehow the idea of just sitting out the war didn't seem believable.War in Heaven does a good job addressing that issue.
I'm unfamiliar with Garth Ennis. The last time I was following comics was in the eighties when I was a college student. Then it was all about The Watchmen, Dark Night, Ronin, and so on. Mr. Ennis is a newcomer to me. I'm impressed with what he's done here. Even if much of his work dosen't appeal to me.
This is a different Hammer from the one I grew up with. But that's okay. He's older, more mature and taciturn even in his thoughts. We all change as the years go by, or at least we should. Von Hammer has changed. Not as much introspection anymore. He knows what he is. No need to talk about it anymore. It's a done deal.
We only see a glimpse of the younger Hammer a couple of times and then it's sparse.Enough for us to see that he is has changed, but that there is still humanity within "The Human Killing Machine".This was always his saving grace. I found that I liked the middle-aged Enemy Ace.
I also found it to be believeable that he would fight for the Nazi's, because he was also fighting for Germany. Many a WW1 veteran fought for Nazi Germany because of their sense of loyalty. Many of them didn't like Hitler, but they couldn't turn their backs on their country. For better or for worse.
Von Hammer is one of Germany's best warriors, a product of the German aristocracy. The Nazi's didn't like the aristocracy, but they needed them. It was a tense relationship and War In Heaven does a good job addressing this uneasy balancing act.
I found the art to be excellent. And unlike some posters I liked the fact that Russ Heath worked on the second chapter.Heath was always my favorite artist back during the old Haunted Tank days. I liked his eye for technical details. It's a nice connection to the old Enemy Ace. But he isn't Kubert. I believe that if Kubert would have drawn the second chapter it would have been distracting. It would have been jarring to have Kubert draw the his most famous character in the jet age.
It's been sixteen years since I purchase a graphic novel. War In Heaven is a good way to end the dry spell.
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Excellent work here, as men of character are forced to fight in a war, and deal with the propagandists and politics at the same time. High quality. A desperate German airforce brings back their aging, veteran star pilot, to train the resources they have left.
With one all-star cameo briefly near the end.
Enemy Ace Soars.......2007-05-11
Enemy Ace War In Heaven is a tremendous artistic work filled with fascinating historical details. Author Garth Ennis is in fine form, supplying great character portraits, an interesting plot and tension in the form of Hans Von Hammer's aristocratic noblesse oblige in contrast to slavish servility to Nazi dogma.
Ennis expertly includes details about design flaws in the Me-109G and the Me-163 Komet. He also includes a strange but true example of British fighter planes operating on the Russian Front. It's these type of details, combined with his hard hitting writing that vault Enemy Ace into the heavens.
Artists Christian Alamy and legend Russ Heath each draw one volune of this work. Both artists do a spectacular job and depict aerial combat in a vivid and gritty manner.
Most of us view air war as a clinical exercise, aerial knights gallantly dueling it out in the skies. But Garth Ennis shows the gruesome aspects of fighter combat in a very powerful scene where Hammer engages a Soviet bomber. Don't worry, I won't spoil the surprise.
Russ Heath also presents a flesh and blood image of air war in his segment of the work during a combat flight between Hammer and his wingman Peter.
I loved this book and hope that Garth Ennis returns to the World War II theme. It's one of his finest pieces.
Well done, Mr. Ennis........2007-04-02
Once again Ennis presents a well-told (if somewhat timeworn) continuation of another vintage character, in this case recalled Luftwaffe ace Hans Von Hammer. The splitting of the story into two parts is well done, although this leads to some unevenness in the artwork. And so it happens that the first part (in which every rivet and panel is lovingly depicted in the horrors of the Ostfront) is better looking than the second part, but the second part has the real meat of the story and includes deeper characters which make up for the comparatively bland artwork. Is the story of a German fighting man who grows disillusioned with his war worn out? Sure. It's been done. Ennis isn't covering any new ground as far as that goes. But don't let that stop you. Stories like this don't come along every day.
A superb addition to the life of Hans von Hammer.......2007-02-15
I have enjoyed the adventures of Enemy Ace in both the DC Showcase edition and the superb George Pratt graphic novel War Idyll, but those stories are separated by 50-plus years. My big question has always been, "what happened in-between?" ENEMY ACE: WAR IN HEAVEN provides the answer. Set from 1941 - 1945, the "Hammer of Hell" is brought out of retirement by the Luftwaffe to lead a squadron of younger pilots. von Hammer, now 46, has no love for the Nazi regime, yet he accepts the position because he has a sense of duty to fight for his country... and fight he does, racking up so many kills that his distaste for Hitler is conveniently ignored by his peers. But von Hammer's sense of duty can only last so long when it comes to the ineptitude and atrocities he witnesses in a Germany under Nazi rule. In the end, he has to make a difficult decision.
I normally run the other way when writer Garth Ennis gets his hands on any company-owned character, but this is a happy exception. Ennis captures the character perfectly, giving us a tired man in middle-age going back to war because that's what gives him life. Thankfully, this story doesn't have the standard Ennis shock value, though there is one scene of a bailed-out pilot falling into the propeller of another plane. Well, at least it fits the story. A nice cameo by Sgt. Rock helps to anchor the action firmly within the greater DC Universe.
Art duties are split between Chris Weston and Russ Heath. Weston does a great job on the first half of the book, perfectly capturing the feel of WW2 styles and machinery. Comics legend Russ Heath finishes off the story, providing a nice blend of his classic style and Weston's stylish renderings. While the differences between the two artistic styles are noticeable, it's really not a problem at all.
Rounding out this collection is a classic tale from Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert: Star-Spangled War Stories #139, featuring Enemy Ace vs. the Hangman. Its inclusion is made all the more enjoyable by the fact that Weston incorporates an image from it into his art for the main story.

Book Description
Since the Middle Ages, Africans have lived in Germany as slaves and scholars, guest workers and refugees. After Germany became a unified nation in 1871, it acquired several African colonies but lost them after World War I. Children born of German mothers and African fathers during the French occupation of Germany were persecuted by the Nazis. After World War II, many children were born to African American GIs stationed in Germany and German mothers. Today there are 500,000 Afro-Germans in Germany out of a population of 80 million. Nevertheless, German society still sees them as "foreigners," assuming they are either African or African American but never German. In recent years, the subject of Afro-Germans has captured the interest of scholars across the humanities for several reasons. Looking at Afro-Germans allows us to see another dimension of the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century ideas of race that led to the Holocaust. Furthermore, the experience of Afro-Germans provides insight into contemporary Germany's transformation, willing or not, into a multicultural society. The volume breaks new ground not only by addressing the topic of Afro-Germans but also by combining scholars from many disciplines. Patricia Mazon is associate professor in the Department of History at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Reinhild Steingrover is assistant professor in the Department of Humanities at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.
