Customer Reviews:
Very inspiring, if not completely detailed.......2007-09-05
I loved this book because it has so many pictures. It is most interesting to see aspects of the rides that you might not get to view by visiting the park. The enthusiasm of this book is inspiring for anyone who is interested in theme park design. It does not get into anthing too technical, or show you what an Imagineer does from day to day on a regular basis. I would reccomend this book if you are interested in seeing Disneyland from another angle or if you want to be a theme park designer. It is a very good book if you aren't looking for technical advice, just to have fun and get excited!
Spectacular Book!!.......2007-07-11
Fabulous book!! Framable quality pages and chock FULL of amazing images. Details the making of films and has frame by frame development by the Imagineers. If the book seems a little spendy, it is. And it is worth it. Not just a coffee table book. You will page through it over and over again and find new things each time!
I admit it..........2007-04-02
...I didn't realize that Imagineering was going to be exclusively based on the Disney theme parks. I was... well, more than a little disappointed when I opened it up and looked for the many illustrations and stuff about the making of the movies, that I confess I thought would be there. The book in itself was nicely put together, and DOES look attractive, in terms of what was in there. I can clearly see why anyone would greatly enjoy it. Nevertheless, in my case it sits collecting dust on my shelf.
I blame myself: I should have looked just a little deeper in what the book was going to be about, before purchasing it. A technical explanation of the process of the theme parks' creation was... uh, boring. *laugh*
great book for the Disney fan.......2006-11-10
This is a beautiful informative book. My kids just enjoy looking at the pictures from their favorite movies and the theme parks. The accompanying stories are interesting and full of fun facts. So much is written about the imagineers it's nice to find one book that is first hand accounts and backgroundn info. If you've ever visited WDW or Disneyland this book gives you a whole new insight into what went into creating these magical places.
Any Imagineering Enthusiast Needs this Book.......2005-12-01
Anyone who has ever dreamed of being an imagineer needs this book. It has interesting construction photographs and artist renderings, however it doesn't have as much in depth and truly new information as I hoped it would. Overall, worth the money.

Book Description
This book is the first to offer a complete appraisal of the life and achievements of Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, the most influential designer in nineteenth-century Britain, who invented the Gothic Revival and launched it as the state style in Britain and in many other parts of the world. Beautifully illustrated, the book contains twenty-one essays by international scholars and specialists who focus on how Pugin`s work in industrial and book design, architecture, the applied arts, and literature influenced opinion and revolutionized public taste.
Customer Reviews:
A key source in the foundation of arts and crafts.......1997-09-29
This book takes the reader back to the early 19th century and the beginning of the Gothic Revival tradition. We learn how this tradition was a reaction against the industrial revolution and the secularization of society. Pugin reacted against this movement by calling our attention back to the Middle Ages, a world of great faith, intellectual and spiritual integration, and hand craftsmanship. The great pioneers of the Arts and Crafts Movement (Ruskin, Morris, McIntosh, Stickly, Wright) all owe Pugin a great debt of gratitude. The multiple authors deal with various aspects of this multifaceted design genius. Various chapters deal with his early life (he was designing furniture for Windsor Castle at age 15, designing the interiors of the Houses of Parliment in his early 20's!), architecture, furniture, metalwork, ceramics, graphics, etc. The person who kept coming to my mind as I have been reading this book is Mozart. Both were child prodigies. Both were prolific. Both were perfectionists. Both died young. The book is lavishly illustraited with color and black and white photos. The text is well written. The linkage between text and illustraition is consistent and clear. Anyone who is interested in the Arts and Crafts tradition owes it to themselves to read this book. To ignore the contributions of Pugin to the developement of the Arts and Crafts tradition is like building a castle in the air with no foundation.
Book Description
This is the first book to reproduce the definitive set of 937 rarely seen and classic images of Robert Capa, one of the most influential documentary photographers of the twentieth century.Robert Capa (1913-54), one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century and a founding member of Magnum photographic agency, had the mind of a passionate and committed journalist and the eye of an artist. His lifework, consisting of more than 70,000 negative frames, constitutes an unparalleled documentation of a crucial 22-year period (1932-54) encompassing some of the most catastrophic and dramatic events of the last century. This book represents the most definitive selection of Capa's work ever published, 937 photographs meticulously selected by his brother, Cornell Capa (himself a noted Life photographer), and his biographer, Richard Whelan. The photographs, arranged in chronological order as stories and accompanied by brief commentaries, reveal the dramatic shifts in location and subject matter that Capa experienced from day to day--- from war-torn Israel to Pablo Picasso on a sunny beach in France and from Ernest Hemingway carousing in London to Capa's historic images of the Allied landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy in 1944.
Customer Reviews:
Robert Capa, photographer.......2007-08-10
An excellent book, well printed, with a lot of photographs. The whole book gives a very good vieuw of the work of Capa. A must for everybody!
This slice of history is a treasure.......2007-06-27
As a student of photography in the 1970's, I was familiar with a few dozen of
these images. However I'm thrilled to be able to experience and share this
collection of hundreds of Robert Capa's images, in roughly chronological order, including a few glimpses shot by others which help give a sense of the
times and places in which he blazed fearlessly through his inevitably short life. This is a great gift for anyone interested in the life and work of the
photojournalist covering the frontlines of world conflict.
Incredible.......2005-08-28
Some of the best war photography. Includes all of Capa's most famous photos, and gives some biographical info. I found it inspiring -- it's more important to be close than to have fancy equipment. Courage and preparation win out.
It is definitive.......2001-12-09
I have not seen another book on Robert Capa that provides such a complete and insightful coverage of his career and voluminous production. For those who appreciate the importance of Capa's contribution to the history of photography and the rendition of key events spanning a momentous era of human history, this book is a "must-have". At the same time, it is unfortunate that the publishers chose to economize on the quality of the printing and the binding.

Book Description
He's one of the most exciting players in professional hockey, with outstanding speed and skill. In his first season with the NHL, Pavel Bure won the Calder Memorial Trophy as top rookie. Eight years after his debut, the man known as the "Russian Rocket" has racked up two 60-goal season and two 100-plus- point years, despite absences caused by injuries and contract disputes. Now an award-winning journalist delves into the mysteries of Bure's life, including allegations of involvement with the Russian Mafia; his troubled relationship with his father; the feuds with the media and with the Canucks' management; and his ambivalent attitude towards his intensely adoring fans. The author lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. 208 pages, 20 b/w illus., 6 x 9.
Customer Reviews:
as exciting a read as Pavel in full flight.......2005-04-17
Although the author really didn't have much access to Pavel himself, he fills in lots of the gaps and dispells a lot of the myths about the most exciting player to put on a Nux jersey (sorry, Markus Naslund...you're great but you don't lift me out of my seat like Pavel did).
This book only confirms my thoughts on writers like Tony Gallagher and Al Strachan--guys who never let the facts get in the way of a story. It also is an eye opener about how Nux mgmt operates and how the Nux WILL NEVER WIN A CUP until they bag this whole Quinn and his acolytes (Burke and now Nonis) hiring policy.
It hurts to read some of this as what mgmt did during Pavel's era is jaw droppingly stupid from bad trades post-1994 to being so chintzy about contract negotiations with key members of that Cup run team and I can now understand why Pavel finally wanted out. And to those out there always talking about how "great" a place to live Vancouver is, read this and wake up to the fact Vancouver is still a backwater and not some sort of cultural and enlightened "world-class" city.
The Russian Rocket.......2002-03-11
I think that this book is probably the best book out there right now. It tells the reader everything about the Russian Rocket, including his relationship with his father. And if you're a hockey fan like me, you really have to read this wonderful book.So don't delay, order today!
Mysterious but enlightening........2001-12-02
If you're looking as to why Pavel Bure appears to be such a "selfish little (...)" (as quoted by a certain Canadian famous hockey personality), then you should read this. The readers are treated to potential reasons as to why Bure acts like he does. He's got his reasons like anyone else does, one of them being he grew up in the former Soviet Union and their media laws towards sports are very different from that of North Americas. Another one being that he is an introvert that simply doesn't like to be bothered.
I love this book, I can just pick it up and start reading from anywhere because its so well-written. Some of the pictures are neat, like the one of him from the Soviet Union days.
There is also some other notes on other current NHL stars like Alexander Mogilny, Sergei Fedorov, and also delves into the Bure brothers relationship with their father Vladimir-who is now estranged from the family for mysterious reasons not given.
There is even some Russian Mafia rumors in this so if you're into that whole extortion stuff then you might like that too.
Either way, its a very good read.
The Riddle of the Amazing Rocket.......2001-03-14
This book is the true meaning of perfection and excellence. He may not be Wayne Gretzky, but Bure could beat him in a speed competition easily. Through the tough times of growing up in Russia, to the glorious days of the Olympics, Pavel Bure is truly a hero and an overall nice guy too. Everyone should read this book, because I sure enjoyed it a lot, and if you know the game of hockey, you will appreciate it even more.
THE RIDDLE OF THE RUSSIAN ROCKET.......2001-01-10
If you want to find out who the Russian Rocket is you'll have to read this book. I would recommend this autobiography for anyone to read if they have an interest in the NHL. This book gives you details on what actually took place for the Russians to be able to come and play hockey in the NHL.
Book Description
The book contains the results of the author's in-depth interviews and representative surveys of how children view their parents working. The author presents the first comprehensive study ever conducted that asks children and parents their views on work and family life. This book was five years in the making. The author covers all the typical areas of thinking today about parents whom work and their children. The result is stereotypes are destroyed and politically correct ideas challenged. The reader will find practical advice for a better family life and a new set of operating principles to help the parent be more in command and control at work and at home.
Customer Reviews:
Do you return to work...or not?.......2005-12-01
You've probably heard all sides of the debate and most likely everyone from friend to family has weighed in on the issue: As a parent, do you return to work or not? Ellen Galinsky took the question straight to the children to find out their perspective. While parents may fear what the children will say, they will be enlightened by the results of this study.
This book is a valuable resource for working parents looking to find a sense of balance between work and family challenges. The type of time parents spend with their children turns out to be more important to the children than the amount of time. Ellen provides parents with ways to strengthen their children's perceptions of what they do at work and why parents work. This book, while it can be time consuming to read all of the statistics, is a must read for all parents.
Kids Are Honest... Sometimes Blatantly Honest........2003-09-20
As an undergraduate, I majored in sociology and chose work and familly relations for my honor's capstone research. My major professor and I selected this book (along with some other standard and newer books relating to this subject). This book became my favorite - outshining some of my other favorites on this topic.
This book takes a practical approach to issues regarding parenting, work, and balancing life. Who would have ever thought to ask children what they felt about their parents working and their family lives? I highly recommend this to adults with children and even to those who are considering having children one day.
Galinsky is right on the mark -.......1999-10-19
This is a terrific book! Finally, we have something that deals head-on with parent-child communication from BOTH sides. Galinsky's insight and tips are invaluable. I would recommend this book to anyone who balances going to work and raising children. It's already changed the dynamics between myself and my kids with regard to work.
Finally, someone asks kids. Practical info, great advice........1999-10-17
This book is a MUST for working parents. For young, working moms like my daughter and daughter-in-law, this book gives practical suggestions on how to manage their work and family life better. Best of all, the results of Galinsky's survey seem to tell working parents that they don't have to feel guilty about the time they're not with their kids, because the kids don't seem to mind. I like her terms for time with the family: "focus" time and "hang around" time. All parents - working and not - who feel stressed out about not giving enough time and efforts to their children need to read this book. I'm giving it to my married children and all the young parents on my holiday gift list. It's great!

Warrior cultures throughout history have developed unique codes that restrict their behavior and set them apart from the rest of society. But what possible reason could a warrior have for accepting such restraints? Why should those whose profession can fo
Customer Reviews:
Lessons lost in our benighted age.......2006-10-15
Professor French has produced a fascinating compilition of the heroic ideals of some of the world's greatest warrior classes. Some examples, the Medieval Knight and the code of Chivalry, the Samurai and their philosophy of Bushido, the Viking and the role of Heroic Honor in the Nordic lands. You will also find the monks of the Shaolin Temple in here, and the Native American plains tribes (An entire book would be needed to cover the heroic ideals of all the indigenous American cultures!).
The reason this book is so significant, is that the concept of Honor is virtually dead in our vapid, passive-aggressive, superficial "modern" society. Its a society dominated by hedonism, narcissism, and conformity. A society that has lost its sense of being and purpose, lost in the vast sewer of so-called "popular-culture".
In ages past, warriors formed martial fellowships adhering to a code of just and honorable conduct, so as to defend their people and way of life. It was often the struggle of their clan, tribe, or nation, against alien aggressors who would otherwise anhilate them, aggressors who might even be willing to go to any extreme to accomplish that end. Of course, in reading history, there are just as numerous examples of warriors who belonged to these institutions, whose actions and behavior was contrary to that code which they alledgedly stood for...but they don't really count. Every institution has its renegades and generally wayward members. The important factor, is that the majority did adhere to these codes, as well as they could, and the righteous nature of honorable conduct justifies itself. Those who lack a code of Honor often commit all manner of atrocities without remorse. A code of Honor, then, often serves as a guide to civilized behavior, a guide to limit or prohibit needless destruction in a conflict.
In our present age of mindless psycho-babble and "cultural-relativism" which lamely attempts to justify criminality, dependance, and ever-diminishing morality, we need a reminder of a higher philosophy of living, a concept of individuality, self-sufficiency, discipline, and self-respect. A previous reviewer, an obvious leftist, will naturally hate this book, as the concept of Honor conflicts with their perverse "alternative lifestyles"...their "if it feels good-do it" existance. The very concept is "childish?", in their point of view. As usual, some people just don't get the point. The warrior-quest is more vital now, to the human soul, than at any previous time in history.
An Incredible Book.......2004-09-09
This book literally blew me away. One of the most inspiring things I have ever read. By analyzing warrior cultures throughout history, The Code of the Warrior is an invaluable tool to teach people today what having a warrior code, or a virtuous code of ethics, is all about. You will walk away with a better understanding of the virtues of courage, integrity, loyalty, love, duty, honor and many others. And you will be inspired to develop your character to fight for what is honorable and true. An essential book for today's lethargic culture. If you want to develop your warrior potential and be a force in this culture for good, read this book!!
A warrior idenitity crisis?.......2004-07-25
Most of the editorial reviews on this book found in major media outfits praise this book. It is also praised by Republicans and conservatives.
I however find the book to be a bit of a stretch. The thinking is thin, the only deep, critical or insightful part of the book is the introduction and conclusion. The case studies, while braced with with that initial inquiry, are thin and one dimensional.
It assumes that the reader is somehow seeking a warrior identity, a mythic structure or meta-narrative. This is childish. It further makes these "mythic structures and meta-narratives" which somehow resemble the creatures and cultures of dungeons and dragons game, about every country except the US.
I think this book grew out of the authors flights of fancy, and she simply wanted a way to justify her D&D games.
