Book Description

The phenomenon loosely termed "Bali style" has been the subject matter for countless books on art, architecture, and interior design. In this book, author and architect Gianni Francione showcases the new generation of Bali-style homes, interiors, and artifacts that utilize what he terms a new internationalism.

Even though the timeless, distinctive Balinese balé, open to a panorama of rice fields and the evening breeze, is still there, it may now be made in marble or stone. Similarly, present-day villas, resort bungalows, shops, restaurants, and other buildings are just as likely to use modernist techniques and materials as they are to utilize alang-alang and coconut wood.

Bali Houses presents this new departure in architecture, interior design, glassware, table settings, textiles, furniture, and furnishings in many never-before-photographed locations. It is a fitting sequel to Bali Modern.

5 out of 5 stars This is Bali condensed in a Book........2007-03-28

A beautiful book well balanced in terms of text and pictures. The quality of the pictures is second to none. Compared to other books about Balinese style mostly focused on interiors, this one captures not only the essence of the interiors but also open spaces and gardens.

5 out of 5 stars Sphisticated and Balanced.......2007-02-22

Great photography and awesome scenarios. It really brings the feeling of being in Bali. And the decorations show the artistic side of the new interiors of the open living. It inspires my clients when they come inside my furniture store. Of the books I have from Bali, this is certainly the one with the best pictures!

5 out of 5 stars Bali Houses Design.......2006-11-05

Being a Decorator, this comes in handy for clients who like the look of the Tropics. It's a complete book of ideas, design strategies, and an overall look into another world of comfortable, colorful, Paradise influence to bring a little joy to the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Balinese houses - paradise........2006-01-04

This is a genuinely fine book. The photographs are spectacular, with fine color and resolution.
The text isn't too in-depth about houses in Bali, but the pictures speak for themselves.
I wholeheartedly recommend it, got me?

3 out of 5 stars not a gem, but better than most........2006-03-04

i'm not usually a fan of japanese art, but this book isn't just another anime art collection.

a friend of mine lent this to me (FORCED it on me) about a week ago, and i was skeptical at first. i would only flip through the book at a red light, or when i was stuck in traffic, seeing as how it came to live on my passenger seat where i had been lightly neglecting it since it's arrival. it wasn't until there came a weekend with no good bands in town that i decided to actually devote TIME to looking at this book. i admit, i wasn't immediatley enthralled with it, but it's a hell of a lot better than straight anime, where everyone's art looks the same, and the cat-eared girls and hermaphroditic boys run through magical forests with reckless abandon. no, these pictures had soul. they had meaning. sure, some of them aren't the most detailed and mind-blowing displays of art, but then, they don't have to be. if these women didn't feel it necessary to show off, i say kudos to them. too often is art used to flaunt one's talent, rather than to convey meaning and emotion. and in doing so, the artist loses that freedom to create original works from the heart, and their "art" just becomes a rote and commercialized means of income. just a job. and that's the real test, isn't it? if you can successfully display your message, yet stay true to yourself, to your heart and to your inspiration, then you've made a difference.
so if these women can still pass on their emotions to the general public without losing authenticity, that's really all that matters. for an artist, that's what success is. it's not about money or fame or beauty. just do what you love, and never lose sight of your true style.

anyway, i'm babbling. this is a good book if you're a fan of japanese art, but are tired of mainstream anime. so get up, split from the norm, and check it out.
(but don't insult it because it's not glamourous enough for you!)

2 out of 5 stars Not as Expected.......2006-02-24

I thought this book woud have a lot more than it did. The cute art in it was not really to my taste. I've shown it to some fine artists, who seemed to appreciate it more, but as an illustrator and a long time fan of japanese art, I was dissapointed.

There is one artist in the book who does flat, local color for terribly simple animal paintings. Nothing engaging, interesting, or different about a brown rabbit sitting. I would have done that in highschool.

The cover image comes from a comic artist inside. Once again, local color and nothing very engaging. Just boring and wierd.

Some of the other artists seemed like it was directed towards kids because it was drawn in the shaky, unpolished manner of a child's hand. They were also more symbolic drawings that children do of people, homes, the sun, and trees.

There are a few artist that are actually interesting. One uses the computer to be extremely decorative. It's not the best, but it is definitely capable of being excellent and is very interesting to look at.

In my opinion though, there are only three artist that I really enjoyed. I do not like the book very much and have cut it up to use in projects. That tore me inside, to cut up a book, but it was there for the project and I was finding a lot of things I didn't mind tearing out. The cute art was not very adorable to me and I suggest buying it used if you must have it. It's not worth the money originally priced or discounted.

4 out of 5 stars "Drop Dead Cute" is both drop-dead gorgeous and disturbing.......2006-02-17

"Drop Dead Cute: The New Generation of Women Artists in Japan" is quite simply a book that is drop-dead gorgeous. Ten artists--most in their early thirties--are profiled, and I would, figuratively speaking of course, kill to have the work of any hanging on my walls. As Ivan Vartanian, who has put this book together, notes in his introduction, most of the art reflects the so-called "super-flat" style that is all the rage among Japan's cutting-edge artists. This two-dimensional graphic style is associated with Japanese manga (adult comics) and anime (animated films), and in a number of cases the renderings of female faces here owe a great deal to the childlike, wide-eyed models of manga and anime. Another recurring theme in this art is the emphasis on animals. One artist, for example, repeatedly uses elephants as her theme with a style that resembles a cross between Hello Kitty and Babar. In large part it is this prevalence of lovable animals, child-like faces, and various dream-like themes that has led Vartanian and others to label the work of these artists "kawaii," the Japanese word for cute.

Personally I would be more inclined to apply the word "kowai," which means "frightening" in Japanese, to the work presented in "Drop Dead Cute." There is an overwhelming sense of loneliness and alienation in this graphic work, a general absence of men and of family life, all sorts of female grotesqueries, and juxtapositions of the horrific and the idyllic. Take, for example, the graphically-stunning work of Chiho Aoshima. In one print she has what is perhaps the most beautiful rendering of a Japanese plum tree that I have ever seen, and this tree in blossom is mixed with images of the mythical paradise of Mount Horai. Stranded in the high branches of the tree, meanwhile, is a naked woman bound in ropes. Another artist, Tabaimo, who works in a take-off of the ukiyoe style, has a subway car scene with a baby abandoned like a package on an upper luggage rack, a stack of dismembered forearms, and a man wrapped like a piece of sushi.

What this all means is only touched on lightly by Vartanian. He has provided a mere one page of text by way of understanding each artist, and his introduction is also just a teaser in hinting at the darker side of this art. For a fuller understanding of how an emphasis on childish themes is coexisting with a sense of alienation in Japan today, the reader of "Drop Dead Cute" would do well to acquire the more scholarly and probing "Little Boy: The Arts of Japan's Exploding Subculture."

I guess a few of these cards were okay, but for the most part they were kind of strange and not at all "drop dead cute". I chose them because I could get them for pretty cheap, but I wish I would have just spent a few extra dollars and gotten the "OMG! I miss you!" postcards, or the "Paintings of Japan" ones. However, if you're looking for something that's a little more out there and maybe even a bit twisted at times, these would be a good bet.

What distinguishes Rohn Engh's book on how to sell photographs--now in its fourth edition--from the many volumes on the subject? Could it be his honest, no-nonsense approach to the topic, as opposed to the get-rich-quick slant of many competitors? His practical, step-by-step advice? His pragmatic sales techniques and principles, which teach niche marketing and explain the vast difference between good pictures of popular subjects (sunsets, wildflowers) and the type of photographs in demand by the editors who actually buy them? All of the above and more, including solid advice about selling photos in the electronic age.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book.......2004-07-02

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in becoming a professional stock photographer. Rohn Engh's words are encouraging, and fill the reader with confidence.

Some of the information is a little outdated, because the internet has changed some of the industry's standard practices. However, the majority of this book is full of practial information that can still be applied today and for years to come. I've read the book 3 times and I still refer to it frequently.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful, but already dated........2002-05-21

The first chapters of the book are somewhat helpful to those just starting out in photography -- specifically, a great deal of time is spent on differentiating between mere snapshots and marketable editorial material. However, this material isn't particularly helpful if you can already shoot and get marketable results. There are also helpful chapters on marketing your identity, and on the business side of things, including legal issues surrounding editorial shooting, which are the chapters I found to be most helpful.

I do have one major gripe about the book, however, that wiped away two of five stars for me:

With a sizable percentage 35mm pros either shooting digital already or in the process of making the move, this book shows its age by discounting digital as generally inadequate or unsellable. This may have been true in the mid-'90s when a serious professional-quality digital system was still $20,000 or more, but it is no longer true today and thus this book seems like another victim of the digital age, in which 5 years old is very old indeed.

Perhaps it is time for a new edition that discusses the digital workflow and digital sales a little more, instead of merely discouraging the use of digital -- especially now that many publishers and editors are looking for digital specifically.

Really, if you are a serious amatuer who has finally decided to sell your shots to wider markets, I think the Photographer's Market is a much more essential title to have on the shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Good for the beginning freelance photographer.......2002-03-15

This book has already paid for itself in submissions of "cliched'" photos that I would have made had I not read the book. This book contains sample form letters for cover letters and queries, and describes the best markets to go to. It also contains a program for finding what subjects one is best suited to photographing.

5 out of 5 stars Business and Pleasure.......2001-05-22

...I think the lesson that is easily overlooked by critics of Mr. Engh's book is that those that follow it's practice GET TO TAKE PICTURES FOR A LIVING!

If you love to take pictures, for God's sake, buy this book and do what you love!! Quit working in Target for the rest of your life in the hopes that someday when you retire you'll get to spend more time on photography. No, you won't be able to quit that Target job tomorrow. Mr. Engy doesn't promise that pipe dream. What he DOES do is point out things which I've found to be dead-on correct through experience....

      1. Slow but steady wins the race. 2. The dilligent hand maketh wealth. 3. You don't get anything you don't work for. 4. Just because you like it, doens't mean anybody else will.

Another note to the purist that would say that the practitioner of this book's premises is a "Sell Out". If it's art that you want to make -- so much so that you would work a different job as the main monitery support for said art -- why can't you make your 'Art' photography when you finish your work for the day as a 'Stock' photographer?

The question is: Do you want to look back at the end of your life and say "I created a picture that rivaled Adams" or do you want to look back over a life in which you can say "I really had a great time with my family and friends. See, here's my wife in 'Ladies Home Journal'. Here's my brother at my gallary opening in New York in 'The New Yorker' (pictures by me). Here's that thing we did down in Cozumel and I didn't have to pay a dime. What a great time!"

If you'd like the latter. Quit messing around:

      1. Buy the book. 2. Read the book. 3. Read it again. 4. Keep it on a shelf as a reference while you DO what it says. 5. Buy all the books in the bibliography that you can afford and are applicable.

3 out of 5 stars Some Good Advice, but a Flawed Premise.......2000-11-08

Before I bought this book, I had perused dozens of reviews, most of which were favorable. I was left with the impression that - like the Photographer's Market - you can't go wrong with this book. For some photographers, I'm sure it *is* quite helpful; Engh's advice is pragmatic and straight forward. And if pragmatic photos are your goal, this book gets 5 stars and not 3. But many photographers are not shooting for pragmatism's sake; they're shooting because there's something emotional or personal which they wish to convey on a visual level. Pictures, rather than poetry or song lyrics if you'd like to look at it that way. Engh seems to disregard this idea all together, once he starts explaining his magic forumla for success....

Once you get to the crux of this formula - that you should be shooting some type of environmental portraiture (people in the context of a specific place) - it implies that if you are interested in photographing something else, you're basically wasting your time. This is frankly a little disturbing. His theory suggests that it is the market's need for a particular kind of photo that should motivate you, and not your own intuition. That is frankly dead wrong in the eyes of many successful photographers. It only works well if you see your photos as a retail product first, and a personal expression (dare I say "art?") second...and some do see it that way, which is fine.

Perhaps that is where Engh goes wrong: this book could be more aptly titled "How the Casual Photographer can Sell and Resell Their Snapshots." It is plainly not that useful for the person interested in fine art photography, "fine art" meaning anything which is not born of commercial origins. It's as though Engh thinks the act of photographing is what's most important to photographers - that if you're out there snapping away that's all that matters, so long as the pictures sell. For many photographers this is not what the medium is about. It's not a "make big money in a hurry" kind of business. It requires someone who is unwavering, methodical and patient...not someone with a few rolls of 35mm film, a camera and Engh's magic formula.

The best instructor I ever had made one crucial point to his students: to be a successful photographer, your images have to speak to people on a deeper level than the average snapshot. If you wish to make photos of this quality, the *only* way to do so is to shoot that subject matter which is not only familiar to you, but very close to your heart. If you shoot what is only moderately interesting to you, so too will your photos be moderately interesting...and perhaps not interesting at all. This is to mention nothing of the technical mastery you must posess, as well. Formulas do not a lasting photograph make....

The bottom line is, if landscapes or buildings or some other thing which is often photographed...if that is what moves you, *that* is what you should be exploring with the camera and lens. To do otherwise is to do yourself a disservice (unless you just want to sell a few snapshots, which is fine). Granted, it may take a few years before you can really break into the market with some truly unique and marketable imagery but that's to be expected. Great photographs don't come easy; it takes perserverance and dedication. So, if you can't make money off your work right away (as Engh suggests you should), then you find other means of income as you continue to work on your personal style and technical mastery of the medium. Ansel Adams wasn't taking his masterpieces after 6 months work. Galen Rowell (probably the most talented landscape photographer to come along since Adams) failed to sell his work many times before he finally succeeded.

Photography is like any other endeavor in life: if you really want to make your mark, you have to pay your dues. There's no way around it.

So the question really is (dear reader and fellow photographer): are you in it to make quick money, or are you in it to make your mark? If you want the quick money, Engh is your man and this book is your book (without question). If, on the other hand you want to achieve a more lofty goal with your work, this book won't help you much other than perhaps to give the proverbial wake-up call. The call which reminds you that no, it won't be easy...but which ignores the possibility that the struggle might bring much greater success than the forumulas in this book.

Dutch artist Roel Wielinga came to American at the age of nine and spent 20 years in the United States Air Force. This multi-talented artist is comfortable and capable of working in many mediums, pencils, paints, and even digitally. Roel's women are sexy and powerful and his creations filled with magic. This collection shows off a variety of his outstanding art in sci-fi and fantasy. A perfect example of his powerful women is shown on page 7 as a bold and proud warrior stands with her dragon-crested shield in front of her.

Pages 14 to 19 show off some of Roel's gorgeous cyborgs and robots with their glinting, cybernetic bodies. Included are several illustrations of his fantasy character Domonisk, a skull-visaged, massive warrior developed for Sirius Entertainment. On page 31 there's a nude jungle warrior queen with her pet leopard, prowling the jungle for prey. Page 39 is a pencil variation of the front cover to the book with an elegantly dressed, bat-winged female demon holding a severed head. But my favorite pieces in the book are probably the series of illustrations of nude pixies and sprites showing playing about or resting leisurely on toadstools or flowers. Tinkerbell was never this sexy!

The book includes both finished and rough illustrations and Roel's notes and comments allow you into his creative process. This is a great collection as SQP continues to provide a fantastic outlet for some of the hottest artists in the world.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2003-10-10

Gena Corea is a prolific radical feminist thinker whose caustic work can be categorized as polemic to the male status quo especially regarding healthcare and more particularly reproductive technologies. She is a breath of fresh air in a system that claims to, but dares not think of women as equal members of society. Corea unveils the social biases that surround reproduction and her contribution is a direct attack on sexism.

Her writings led to the inspiration and completion of my graduate thesis. For that, I thank her.

What first draw my attention was the title
and the cover of this book. I found in it
many ideas that hadn't crossed my mind.
And though this book was written
more than a decade ago, it is amazing to
realize how "in" some of the expressed
ideas, for example cloning, are. Since I
translated parts of the book into greek
I would be very interested to
          communicate with the author Gena
          Corea and learn
          more about her work.

Thank you for sharing my thoughts.

          Book Description

Dubbed "Stonewall" following the battle of First Manassas in July 1861, Thomas Jackson has long been revered as a brilliant military leader and tactician and as one of the most adroit Confederate commanders. The man himself is a study in contrasts: justifiably feared by his enemies and completely beloved by his men.

          J. Steven Wilkins examines the life and character of Jackson. His research reveals a man humble and sincere in his Christian faith, which stands in stark contrast with the general's reputation as a ferocious warrior.

Shortly after his graduation from West Point in 1846, Jackson served in the Mexican War in 1848, where he became one of the most decorated heroes of the conflict and received promotion to the brevetted rank of major. He left the army in 1851 to accept a teaching position at the Virginia Military Institute, resigning his commission in the army a year later. In 1859 he led a contingent of cadets to maintain order during the trial and ensuing execution of John Brown. When Jackson departed VMI in 1861 to join the Confederate army, he was immediately commissioned a colonel and within months was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. Mortally wounded by friendly fire in May 1863, he "more than anyone else, personified the compelling and the virtuous in what the subsequent generation would label `The Lost Cause'"—James I. Robertson Jr.

4 out of 5 stars Great book within a great series........2007-03-14

First let me say that the "Leaders in Action" series is tremendous (check the rest of them out--Robert E. Lee, Winston Churchill, Teddy Roosevelt, William Wilberforce and more). They are biographies which deal not only with facts, but also with the character and faith of historical figures. Every school age child should read these books and take these role models to heart.

The great thing about this book is that it gives a solid summary of Stonewall Jackson's life and history as well as a thorough examination of his faith and values. If you can believe it, I was almost brought to tears by the account of his death. Especially for Civil War buffs--this is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Stonewall Jackson and his personal relationship with God.......2006-01-09

This is an excellent look inside the life of Thomas Johnathan "Stonewall" Jackson.

Reverend Wilkins does an excellent job of researching first-hand accounts of the important events that occurred during Jackson's life and how they refined him into the man that God made him.

          Book Description

Bloomfield Academy was founded in 1852 by the Chickasaw Nation in conjunction with missionaries. It remained open for nearly a century, offering Chickasaw girls one of the finest educations in the West. After being forcibly relocated to Indian Territory, the Chickasaws viewed education as instrumental to their survival in a rapidly changing world. Bloomfield became their way to prepare emerging generations of Chickasaw girls for new challenges and opportunities.

Amanda J. Cobb became interested in Bloomfield Academy because of her grandmother, Ida Mae Pratt Cobb, an alumna from the 1920s. Drawing on letters, reports, interviews with students, and school programs, Cobb recounts the academy’s success story. In stark contrast to the federally run off-reservation boarding schools in operation at the time, Bloomfield represents a rare instance of tribal control in education. For the Chickasaw Nation, Bloomfield—a tool of assimilation—became an important method of self-preservation.

5 out of 5 stars Listening to Our Grandmothers' Stories.......2000-11-23

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and fully appreciate why it received this year's American Indian Prose Award.

Cobb has approached what is clearly, to her, a personally significant topic in a manner that is sensitive far beyond her personal views. The history of the United States' treatment of American Indians is complex and troubled. Cobb, relying on both archival research and personal interviews with women who attended the Bloomfield Academy when the school was under federal administration, has provided a fresh and compellingly complicating perspective on Indian boarding schools, a specific facet of this history. Most significantly in her work, she has highlighted, through these women's own voices, the contemporaneous perspective of natives directly impacted by the United States' varying policies. What emerges is a well-documented story of Native self-direction, self-identification, and, above all, survival and hope for the future. Her final chapter, especially, poignantly brings this point home. Rather than overtly ideologize her topic, Cobb has allowed the story primarily to tell itself.

This book is a genuine contribution to contemporary research of Native history.
