Not Worth the Money.......2007-01-23

As a builder specializing in Timber Frame construction, I was looking for a book that would provide pictures and design ideas for someone considering this type of construction. This book isn't it. The book is full of nice pictures of downright ugly timber frames. Many of the frames seem to be made of 4x4's. That's not a structural frame, that's trim. Real frames start at double or triple that size.

Timber frames are beautiful structures conveying the strength and richness of the trees from which they came. There are a few examples of this in this book, but not nearly enough to make it worth the cost. If you are looking for a great timber frame idea book, keep looking.

Just not enough content.......2002-02-04

Just not enough content pretty much sums it up for me. Half the book was pictures, which were supposed to emphasize the techniques, but I found many to be unappealing. The overall material explaining the author's ideas of design criteria could have been presented in about ten pages.

The cover of this book could have employed design basics to get creative results, but the interior makes up for it. Its generous amount of fundmental information is nicely laid out in an uncomplicated and easy to use format. Mostly, I am disappointed with graphic design how-to books. They tend to be ambiguously narrated "portfolios" of high-profile designers with magnificant clients; as if just staring at their work is going to make you a better designer with a bigger budget. Though the majority of these samples are grand, Perterson actually analyses why the designs chosen are successful based on design fundamentals. The first half of the book is honest and humble -- like kindergarten; but in a really nice classroom. The topics discussed in depth are the basics of design like line, type, shape, texture, balance, contrast, unity, color, and value. The second half graduates to the working world and how those philosophies are applied to working models. A must for every designer. I have been doing this for twelve years and I still refer to the first half of this book all the time.

I was really impressed with the fact the author wrote the book with "design novices" in mind. The book was an easy read, but yet pushed the reader to think beyond the examples laid out in the book

ok on facts, light on sense.......2005-09-14

The medical aspects are dealt with fairly accessibly, but troubles me is the author's tone throughout the book - patronising, and his tendency to make statements that belie an extraordinary ignorance of human beings. What kind of weirdo would write a sentence like "....of course, the death of a child is always tragic, even when it is expected"?

There are a few such pronouncements in the book, but the whole thing is saturated with that strange arrogance that only doctors seem to manage - I think it comes from dealing so much with "the sick" and "suffering" family members, that they start thinking that doctors are some higher breed of "healthy" humans who are on earth to offer hope to poor unfortunates.

I would not recommend this book for parents.

This book uses easy to understand language to explain the complexities of this group of disorders. It is a good first book for individuals and families faced with the likelihood or reality of a muscular dystrophy diagnosis.

a rich photo history of ww2 flight jackets.......2001-07-20

maguires book is a stunning photo reference of world war two flight jackets. heavy emphasis is placed on the "art" aspect focusing on the individual art that ww2 air crewman chose to adorn their flight jackets. there are many color photographs as this is the books focus, the weakness of the book comes from it's lack of text. there is not much here for someone who wants to read about the subject, just lots of full color photographs....and frankly for this edition thats good enough. the definitive flight jacket book hasn't yet been written.
