No Fluff.......2007-08-13
It's exactly what the title promises without the useless filler of many books. I recommend it.
Worth Every Penny.......2007-06-13
Steven Bliss has done a fabulous job culling material from many references which are found on nearly everyone's bookshelf! Bliss puts all the information into an easily understood and clearly illustrated medium. I particularly appreciate the product comparisons for various materials. This book is a must have for every residential architect!

An excellent book!.......2006-06-07
I think this is an excellent book! The material is very thoroughly researched and well presented with many illustrations. I was very please to discover that it even includes a chapter on kitchen and bath design. I would highly recommend this anyone involved in residential construction; carpenters, contractors, designers, architects and homeowners.

Best Practices Guide to Residential Construction - Steven Bliss
Book review by Daniel Friedman
Bernie Campbalik used to make a sucking noise through his teeth when he saw one of us do something sloppy on the jobsite or in his carpentry class. Bernie knew a lot about good construction practices, and he regularly pointed out that the foul-ups were often in the details. Mistakes or omissions led to trouble down the road. We were to avoid such goofs by recognizing them and fixing them on the job. But beyond that sucking noise that I heard a bit more than I wanted to, I remember Bernie's description of his own first days working as a carpenter's assistant.
"The foreman would choose an 18' 2x10, after eying several for straightness, cup, and bow. Then he would disappear around the corner of the building where we were working. He'd return in a few minutes with a pattern rafter and would hand it to me. 'Here, ...' he'd growl as he handed it over, 'dig into that pile over there and cut me 23 more like these.'"
The foreman didn't want Bernie to know how to layout a birds' mouth cut or plumb cut. That little extra knowledge was what he figured was his edge, the data that assured his job as site foreman.
And that has been a problem in construction. While most people who build do so out of a real love of the work, there is a tradition of "not sharing" the how-to details that make the difference between "good enough" and "good work." Unlike his foreman, Bernie actually wanted us to know how to do it right. Not because he particularly liked us, but because he loved the work and wanted that to be right.
Steve Bliss, with a combination of real-world on-the-job construction experience and a long career as a writer and editor for the Journal of Light Construction , Progressive Builder, and Solar Age has written a new book,
Best Practices Guide to Residential Construction, Materials, Finishes, and Details, which is full of details and product choices that make the difference etween "good enough" and "good work" - the stuff that all of us who build or have built homes wish we'd known sooner.
Best Practices has a simple organization. It's easy to find details can help the success of your construction project. Here are a few examples:
- Exterior finish: a rain screen wall using Cor-A-Vent or folded insect screen at the bottom of a clapboard siding wall can keep out insects and still permit drainage. Text is accompanied by a photo suggesting installing siding over furring over the building sheathing. It's a small detail, one of many, that addresses trapped moisture in buildings - a common source of insect damage, rot, or the current enviro-scare topics. Beyond concepts, such as "rain screen," Bliss addresses sheathing wraps (house wrap), flashing membranes, wall flashing, and specific details regarding the installation of common exterior sheathings such as wood siding, wood shingles and shakes, vinyl siding, wood and composite trim. To go past theory and good ideas, the chapter also lists product suppliers and their websites or contact information. A product resource list is offered at the end of each chapter.
- Roofing: Bliss's eaves details for metal roofing, such as remembering to include the rubber closure strip and to cap it with butyl tape address one of many omissions that at my building inspections I find have led to wind-blown rain or wind damage to the roofing. It's a small detail that makes a big difference. Bliss includes details for the common roofing materials and systems such as asphalt shingles, clay, concrete, composite tile, metal roofing, low-slope roofing, and of course he addresses the vexsome specialty of roof ventilation.
- Windows and Doors: This huge topic is compressed to window types, materials and construction, energy efficiency, skylights, exterior doors. Picking an example almost at random, I came across the warning to avoid storing vinyl windows in a container, such as a trailer, or leaning them against a wall, "... as they can permanently deform." It was just this condition that I came across recently at a property, and while I saw the defect, I was at a loss to explain how it happened.
- Decks and Porches: This chapter takes a look at framing and decking material choices, fasteners, construction details, and the notorious problem of rooftop decks, as well as covered/screened porches and deck finishes. After seeing a few terrifying deck collapses, both during and after construction (luckily not at my job sites), I was happy to see Mr. Bliss's details about fastenings and connections, especially at post to beam and post to pier points. Bliss also offers some simple details for creation of and sealing at a deck to house-wall gap, one of the most-common leak and rot points we find on buildings where these details are omitted.
- Interior Finish: Drywall, various flooring types (wood, vinyl, the currently-popular laminate, carpets), trim, doors, stairs, sound, lighting are surveyed for the Achilles heel and remedy, and Steve includes his recommendations among these choices. Environmentally concerned clients will appreciate having some alternatives to vinyl and carpeting and plastic laminates, such as the cork flooring described in this chapter.
- Kitchen and Bath: this chapter spends time on design basics - an area that counts for kitchens and baths as anyone who's lived with a thoughtless layout can testify. The author offers helpful tables of materials choices (such as flooring) with cost, suitability for radiant heat, pros, cons, and recommendations for each.
- Indoor Air quality: It will be interesting to builders to review Bliss's perspective on IAQ, as this topic is much in the public eye, or I should say lung and mind. I like that the author stops at a succinct outline of the possible concerns and moves to some clear, basic advice about an overall strategy (about problem particles or gases: "keep it out, vent it out, dilute it, filter it out"), and goes on to offer some opinions about the various methods people are using to improve residential indoor air quality. This is a rather large topic to tackle in a single chapter, so don't look for an encyclopedic review here.
For a more encyclopedic resource on mold and IAQ inspection and testing methods see www.inspect-ny.com/sickhouse.htm - my web. But of use are Bliss's whole-house ventilation strategies and his table comparing the pros, cons, controls, cost, and his recommendations for various ventilation methods. As the author points out, (in my words not his), even the most brilliant and expensive design isn't worth much if it's not used by the building occupants. He suggests "More important than the precise number of cubic feet per minute, however, is a well-designed system that is quite, reliable, and low-maintenance, ensuring it will actually be used." Precisely. Combine the real-world philosophy just stated, with a table of the characteristics, appropriateness of use, and cost of venting alternatives, and you have some good design details that can make a difference in the health and quality of life of the occupants of the home.
I like this book and I recommend it. I'm lucky - I didn't have to pay for it. Mr. Bliss sent me a review copy, probably knowing that I hold him in high regard, but probably also slightly worried by knowing that I won't pull any punches on a review. The book is well worth having, and it makes a good dent in the "secret pattern rafter layout" problem I mentioned above, by passing on many "best practice" details for residential construction. To collect and pass on all of them would produce more pages than the Harvard Classics, and more books than Google has indexed (so far). The length of this book, 308 pages including a useful index, gives space for a well-worth-having collection of helpful details beyond the usual arm-waving that pollutes most professions and contaminates ours too. The book's strengths are the perspective and choice of details selected by a writer who has spent a lifetime of hands-on building, writing about, and finally editing about good construction practices.

Book Description
In 1973, California artist John Divola began the first of three highly ambitious and original bodies of work that form Three Acts, the first book dedicated to them. His Vandalism series comprises black-and-white photographs of interiors of abandoned houses. Entering illegally, Divola spray-painted markings that referenced action painting as readily as the graffiti that was then becoming a cultural phenomenon. For the following year's Los Angeles International Airport Noise Abatement series, he photographed a condemned neighborhood bought out to serve as a noise buffer for new runways, focusing on evidence of previous unsanctioned entries by other vandals. His final work, Zuma, documents the destruction of an abandoned beachfront property by the artist and others, as it deteriorates frame by frame and eventually burns. Divola has much in common with artists such as Bruce Nauman and Robert Smithson who have used photography to investigate other topics. He describes his innovative practice succinctly: "My acts, my painting, my photographing, my considering, are part of, not separate from, this process of evolution and change. My participation was not so much one of intellectual consideration as one of visceral involvement."

Destruction and change are documented in vivid black and white photos.......2006-08-06
David Campany's essay provides a historian/photographer's background and perspective while critic Jan Tumlir's interview adds more depth to compliment the photo gathering of John Divola's Three Acts. Divola created these bodies of work over the course of the 1970s, pulling together the themes of Vandalism, LAX NAZ and Zuma created in condemned neighborhoods, urban settings, and through interplays between artist and subject. Destruction and change are documented in vivid black and white photos.

A tiny dinosaur with a feisty attitude marches across the wilderness defending the friendly and furry from the mean and hungry. Told entirely without words, the stories highlight the amazingly detailed art and visual storytelling genius of creator Masashi Tanaka. Pint-Sized Tyrannosaur Stars In Three Unforgettable Tales.......2005-09-16
This is the book that introduced Gon - world's last dinosaur, one foot tall midget tyrannosaur, alternately playful and cuddly or as ferocious as an enraged Hulk when need be - to North American audiences. Featuring a different artistic style (especially in the first story, "Gon Eats And Sleeps") than the later Gon volumes but no less phenomenal. In the back of the book are photorealistic drawings of the real-life species depicted in the three tales - so photorealistic, in fact, that at first I thought they were actual black-and-white photographs. That's how great the art is.
"Gon Eats And Sleeps" is possibly the most essential tale in understanding this enigmatic little dinosaur. Readers who start with a subsequent volume may well ask themselves 'why does he keep tormenting that poor bear so?' In this tale we see the beginning of the rivalry between these two titans, a rivalry it seems the Bear is always destined to come up with the short end of the stick on. Basically, Gon takes great umbrage when a large grizzly bear chases a smaller one off a catch of fish the smaller bear has caught. And thus the lifelong animosity begins, an animosity that notably doesn't extend to other bears, just this one, 'The Bear'.
It isn't always spelled out as clearly in subsequent volumes, but when Gon goes on the offensive against The bear or some other creature, it seems obvious there is some past transgression (usually directed against one of Gon's small, defenceless animal friends, it seems)that has sparked the blood feud. Ferocious but valiant, Gon marches through life enjoying the world and defending the weak with his own sense of justice, and while I don't feel the little guy is sadistic or mean he sure can be an intimdating force. As I noted in doing a writeup on "Gon Color Spectacular" Gon never kills his foes and they seldom are worse off than a few bruises and scratches; too much serious carnage would definately ruin the charm and tone of the series.
The second tale, "Gon Learns To Fly" is one of the most hilarious tales in the Gon pantheon and simply has to be seen to be believed. Words cannot do this an adequate description, but talk about refusing to admit defeat! And in "Gon Glares" - which certainly boasts some of the most, er, unique visual imagery ever captured on paper through either pen or photo, we see that even in defending his circle of friends Gon is not without compassion for his predatory adversaries. A perfect ending to a perfect book; a perfect start to a whole series of unforgettable Gon adventures!
Gon.......2002-10-08
One of the best manga's of all time. Gon is loved greatly by children and many adults in Japan and has recently come to America! This is a great buy and I suggest looking into the entire series. I have been an anime/manga fan for 9years now, and I can confidently say you won't be disappointed with this buy.
Enter the Dino Mind.......2002-09-21
Gon is, by and far, an enjoyable journey through the greatly unexplored world of nature and is introduced to us in the most unlikely of ways. Here, amidst an untamed world, we meet the most unlikely of travelers, that of a two-foot-tall unstoppable force that just happens to be one of the cutest/aggressive characters ever to grace a storyline, as he looks for fun, adventure, and something to eat. This book is where the adventures of Gon, the adorable dinosaur with a voracious appetite for exploration/competetion, begins, introduced to us in short story forums. We join Masashi Tanaka as he relays this through silent adventure after silent adventure, speaking wheels through expressions and a flurry of emotive responses instead of simple spurts of meaningless dialog.
Here, Gon first battles and then humiliates an otherwise gargantuan bear that otherwise seems to dominate the wilderness, ends up flying with the aid of a few eagles after a strange little adventure in feeding/protecting some little ones, torments a dingo looking for some easy pickings, fights alongside some wolf cubs he seems somewhat attracted to, lives amongst the penguins, and builds himself a mansion that makes even the beavers enviously agitated.
If you've never had the opportunity to check this out, I would recommend it highly. The art style, the character itself, and the fact that I've never found myself bored throughout five books filled with him, says that Gon is a force to be reckoned with.
Great artistic skills and dynamic imagery.......1998-03-28
You. Yes, you. Get this book. This is the first release from Masashi Tanaka and what a release it is ! It is simply the best artwork I have ever seen in comic books, or anywhere else for that matter. Small and fierce Gon kicks butt!
He's Gon, but he'll be back!.......1997-01-19
For those of you that liked jurassic park, Bambi and 101 dalmations, but hate Barney, Gon is for you. Gon is a VERY small dinosaur from a bygone age, he has no problems being the last dinosaur, and seems to enjoy the arrogance of his seeming indestructability. He is a staunch defender of the downtrodden and the helpless, as well as his lunch. The art is fantastic, the stories (no words) flow well and are completely enjoyable

Book Description
A superb study for both the historian and modeler, this book contains 124 color profiles showing Luftwaffe single-engine fighter aircraft - Bf 109, Fw 190, Ta 152, Me 262, Me 163, and He 162 - once piloted by some of the most famous German aces of World War II. Also shown are war-era photographs of select aircraft and pilots. The book begins with a summary of Luftwaffe fighter camouflage and color schemes on the various war fronts, then explains unit markings, tactical codes, personal markings and other markings. Luftwaffe Fighter Aircraft in Profile serves as the perfect introduction to the history of the German Luftwaffe in World War II. At the same time, it is an indispensable volume to the aircraft modeler., over 125 color profiles, b/w photographs, 11" x 8 1/2"

A strong lesson in History.......2007-03-05
While on the left side, one can have the actual story of the pilots that flew the planes, on the right side one can found a color profile of the plane.
This works very well as the profiles suddenly come alive and tell a story.
While the book doesn't seem to have as many profiles as the Histoire&Collection series (see my other reviews), and the colors seem less vivid, the book is a extra-ordinary complement to said Histoire&collection series as the story of the planes seem much more researched. You also get a good reference for RLM colors and markings.
I thought the book could have benefited from top down views which are hard to find anywhere.
So far, it terms of the ideal combination for the luftwaffe fighters, I strongly advise to purchase this book and the Histoire&Collection series.
A strong lesson in History, beautiful and captivating.
Excellent reference, without parallel.......2006-07-03
I find myself picking it up every once in a while just to marvel at the illustrations and the stories (mostly sad) of the pilots.
ALL here.......2003-02-17
Well, if you want to see many good side views of Luftwaffe fighters, this is probably the best book available today. The computer/art work is fantastic. I actually found the short text (about each pilot and his mount) to be quite interesting.
Should get a 5 star plus raiting.
Excellent - but with a flaw........1999-05-22
Normally I would give this book 5 stars. What stopped me from doing so, is Mr Bergstroem's foreword. A book like this should be free from political polemic. I can sense his communistic leanings by the way he described Hermann Graf's "repentance" after the war. By writing...(he) had the strenght of seeing through what he had done... Mr Bergstroem does an unjustice to thousands of pilots who flew and died in defence of their home country. His foreword sounds very naive. I just like to know what he would have done under the same circumstances - would he have found out what courage is? Hopefully he can refrain from politics in his next book. It only detracted from an otherwise excellent piece of literature on the Luftwaffe.
This book has become for me the encyclopedia........1999-03-11
It is magnificent. Very well and beautifully is made. For me this book at once has become the encyclopedia on the German pilots. It is a pity, that I about the German pilots know a little. But your book very much has helped me to receive a lot of new and magnificent information. It really is magnificent.
The short biographic data about the pilots very much have liked. For me this opening. I speak to the authors of a thank. And main do not stop. Continue this theme. And me is sad that we in Russia can not buy such books. It is very expensive. A thank.
I apologize for my English language.

Another Great Collection of Luftwaffe Profiles from Sundin & Bergstrom!.......2007-09-11
The subject of Luftwaffe camouflage continues to fascinate as witness this second collection of Luftwaffe fighter color profiles by Claes Sundin and Christer Bergstrom. Like its predecessor published in 1997, this book is a must-have for all Luftwaffe enthusiasts and modellers.
This latest volume depicts 124 single-engine Luftwaffe fighters - Bf 109s, FW 190s, He 161s, Me 262s and even a Macchi 205 flown by JG 77! - in full color along with accompanying stories on the aircraft's pilot. Emphasis is given to early war aircraft (1939-1942) and rightly so since Luftwaffe camouflage and colors blossomed in that period. (Later war aircraft tended to be drab with few unit markings).
Creating color artwork from mainly black and white photographs can open one up to criticism. However the authors make a strong case for the correctness of their artwork through opening chapters on Luftwaffe day fighter camouflage and markings and comments from Sundin.
The resulting book is a feast for the eyes and great reading as well. Along with recreating several well-known schemes, they have unearthed new and interesting markings. The pilots covered range from well-known Experten like Gunther Rall to less well-known aces such as Rudi Artner. Lastly, since the profiles are chronologically arranged, one can also see the fascinating progression of Luftwaffe schemes from first to last.
All in all, a great piece of work! Here's hoping there's a volume 3 in the works!
Even better.......2006-09-23
I'm surprised no one has a comment about this volume. As good as the first one was, this second follow up is even better. The format has not changed but the complex computer generated illustrations are out of this world.

Book Description
During the English Industrial Revolution, the Vale of Nailsworth was a rural-industrial settlement and a center of evangelical Nonconformity. Why did the transition to the factory system bring deindustrialization and social decline rather than long-term advancement? Albion Urdank investigates the modernization of Nailsworth from many perspectives, revealing the experience and the mentalité of ordinary people in their ecological, economic, and social environments. His innovative approach, in the tradition of the Leicester and Annales schools, contributes to the historical literature on popular religion, secularization, local history, and European industrialization, and will appeal to a wide spectrum of interdisciplinary interests.
Book Description
Addressing all those interested in the history of American science and concerned with its future, a leading scholar of public policy explains how and why the Office of Naval Research became the first federal agency to support a wide range of scientific work in universities. Harvey Sapolsky shows that the ONR functioned as a "surrogate national science foundation" between 1946 and 1950 and argues that its activities emerged not from any particularly enlightened position but largely from a bureaucratic accident. Once involved with basic research, however, the ONR challenged a Navy skeptical of the value of independent scientific advice and established a national security rationale that gave American science its Golden Age. Eventually, the ONR's autonomy was worn away in bureaucratic struggles, but Sapolsky demonstrates that its experience holds lessons for those who are committed to the effective management of science and interested in the ability of scientists to choose the directions for their research. As military support for basic research fades, scientists are discovering that they are unprotected from the vagaries of distributive politics.
