Book Description
Clarke Snell and Timothy L. Callahan, whose popular Good House Book helped environmentally-minded readers create an earth-friendly home, have returned with a photo-packed, amazingly complete, start-to-finish guide to "green" housebuilding.
This absolutely groundbreaking manual doesn't just talk about eco-friendly building techniques, but actually shows every step! More than 1,200 close-up photographs, along with in-depth descriptions, follow the real construction of an alternative house from site selection to the addition of final-touch interior details. Co-authors Clarke Snell and Timothy Callahan (a professional builder and contractor) provide thorough discussions of the fundamental concepts of construction, substitutes for conventional approaches, and planning a home that's not only comfortable and beautiful, but environmentally responsible. Then, they roll up their sleeves and get to work assembling a guest house that incorporates four different alternative building methods: straw bale, cob, cordwood, and modified stick frame. The images show every move: how the site is cleared, the basic structure put together, the cob wall sculpted, the bales and cordwood stacked, a living roof created, and more. Most important, the manual conveys real-world challenges and processes, and offers dozens of sidebars with invaluable advice. It's head and shoulders above all others in the field.

Building Green.......2007-02-12
This is an excellent book that is easy to read and actual tells you step by step with over a 1000 beautiful photos how to build your own "Green" building. I am an inexperienced owner-builder and after reading this book I feel that each step of the process was described so clearly that I can use it as a guide for building my own house. None of the other books I've read on the subject have provided this level of clarity or detail - all in an upbeat, easy to read and sometimes humourous style.
The first part of the book does a good survey of the differnet types of materials used in green building and the considerations of siting and design as well. The second part covers actually building the house and what to do or to avoid in the process.
Great Book...not for northwestern climates.......2007-02-07
This is a VERY informative and educational book. I LOVED it, however, I live in a wet climate in Northwestern Canada and the methods used in this book are not condusive to this area.
Excellent and Comprehensive Intro and Education........2006-04-29
I have been looking for a book that would educate me on exactly what green building is, whether it is actually practical and what it would take to achieve it. This book answered all those questions. I think it has filled a void in the information market. So many people are not satisfied with current building practices especially in the US yet finding one comprehensive source for reliable answers is extremely difficult. There is lots of experience bound up in the very well-written, easy flowing text. The mass of photos is extremely instructive and attractive. This book is not clouds-in-the-sky, blindly pro-environment babble. Neither is it full of the marketing lies that exploit the "green" movement. It is useful for normal people who are interesting in trying to build earth-friendly but practical, efficient and affordable homes. The writers are very honest in their educated opinions and recommendations. And they actually built a small green building in order to write this book. So you get the useful, hands-on advice that they learned themselves the hard way even with their past, extensive building experience in the US. I appreciate their effort and book very much, and can't recommend it highly enough as one every non-expert should read if they have a possible interest in green building in the future or even in just building a marginally more efficient home.
Nicely presented intoduction to several green techniques.......2006-02-27
A very nicely presented 'survey' of several green building techniques with a practical and mainstream perspective. Less inspiring and holistic (in terms of presenting an overall philosophy of building AND living) than the likes of The Hand-Sculpted House (Evans, Smiley and Smith), etc. but the beautiful photography and clear writing is a powerful tool to use in convincing the skeptical that green building is a legitimate and aesthetically pleasing option in construction. Really more of a 'complete introduction' than a 'complete how-to guide' in my estimation- if you are really going to build you'll need to suppliment your knowledge with additional in depth books on the particular system(s) you choose to use, but this book will expose you to some of the options and provide you with an informational foundation to 'build' on (pun intended).
Book Description
Citywide networks of green roofs can result in cooler summer temperatures, reduced energy demand, controlled stormwater runoff, protected wildlife habitat, and an enhanced sense of urban well-being. Highlighting these benefits, Green Roofs informs and inspires communities, designers, building owners, and government and business leaders by showcasing the environmental and aesthetic potential of green roofs around the world.
"Imagine the effect of community kitchen gardens on the rooftops of New York City," writes visionary green architect William McDonough in his forward. "The gardens would make visible the vital connections between water, soil, food, and human culture, and create a network of living landscapes across the ancient archipelago that is New York City."
Hundreds of photographs, forty case studies of exemplary green roof projects - from Mexico City to Malmo, Sweden to Fukuoka, Japan to Dearborn, Michigan - provide inspiration and guidance for green roof development, as well as design details. The book includes seven essays on green roof development in Berlin, Tokyo, London, Portland, Chicago, Toronto, and New York City. Additional essays detail the technical requirements, architectural history, and design possibilities of vegetated rooftops.

Look elsewhere for technical info.......2007-06-25
Perhaps some of the previous reviewers liked it because they use it for inspiration when designing at the very high visual level -- because really, this book is about pictures.
There is no useful information in the book about the design or construction of green roofs (except a couple of pages in passing).
Want to know more about how to design and construct using membranes, insulation, drainage, soil and gravel? Then look elsewhere.
Want to know more about how to design and construct a green roof on a new versus and existing building? Then look elsewhere.
How about planning the maintenance needed for a green roof whilst at the design and construction phase? Again look elsewhere.
Nice Coffee Table book, but no real information.......2007-01-25
Compared to the wealth of books on the subject in German and Japanese, there has yet to be a single good book in English. This book has nice pictures, but it doesn't even attempt to touch on the detail required to fully understand this subject adequately to qualify people to specify and actually implement Green Roofs. [...].
Green roofs around the world.......2006-04-23
GREEN ROOFS: ECOLOGICAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION advocates the construction of 'green roofs' which can reduce energy demand and protect wildlife, packing in a survey of buildings and communities already using such roofs to their advantage. Some forty case studies of these projects pair color photos of roofs around the world with discussions of sustainable development and project management: thus practical applications appear alongside environmental advocacy. Experts also discuss technical requirements and history, which will please working architects. An excellent survey of working green roofs and their appeal.
Great Book.......2006-01-27
As a very vocal proponet of green or living roofs I love this book. I believe that Mr Collum, previous reviewer must have just looked at the pictures. Pages 9 through 23 tell very well why we should have green roofs. If you are already an advocate or a newbe to green roofs, this book is for you. There is not a lot of technical information here but it gives the bare bones. If everything you needed to know about green roofs was here you couldn't lift the book. This book is ment to inspire you to get behind green roofs and advocate them in your neighborhood.
Why produce a book like this?.......2005-12-23
This book has lots of nice photographs. That is all. The technical section consists of two pages which state that a waterproof membrane is needed between the roof structure and the soil. There is no information of a technical nature in the book. I wonder why use up the earth's resources for no value. An absolute waste.

very usefull book.......2006-07-24
I am an adult beginner exploring watercolor painting. This book has really good information about getting started. I especially liked the information on paint characteristics, perspective, color value, and focal point. I have purchased booklets from my local hobbie shop chain that are much more expensive and give less comprehensive explanations. I found this book very helpful.

I purchased this book based on previous reviews. The book is good, however it's a lot of information for a "beginner." The book is compact, could be a little bigger for better illustration.

For all those who would like to get to grips with the nitty gritty bits of Adobe Photoshop this book has it all.Mr Al Ward has long been associated with the Adobe people and his methods of teaching others in this book is brilliant.
You Have all the tools and advice on how to use them illustrated, plus you have the oppportunity to use your own pictures and adapt them to create the illustration shown. This then makes the finished article more personal as you have used your own work and not that given to you.
Highly recomended

Good book. I borrowed it from the library then decided to buy it. Worthwhile tutorials to learn very cool stuff. I would recommend for beginner - intermediate.
Finally....something different !!!.......2006-01-15
I love this book! I'm an intermediate user, and I was looking for some new inspiration, and I found it here! I love Deke McClelland's videos, and Scott Kelby is a useful, enjoyable read. Katrin Eismann has some great stuff, but you've got to really put your thinking cap on for hers..not always what I'm in the mood for. This book finally has some new ideas and the images are visually stimulating, combined in an interesting way, AND they are included on a CD. I climb into bed with Al's book wanting to relax and learn and then want to jump out and try something! A must have!!!
Big book, little action.......2005-07-31
First of all, Macintosh users beware. The entire book was written from the standpoint of PC users; 'control this, control that' in regards to keyboard and mouse issues. Anyone who writes a Photoshop book without Macintosh interface directions along with PC information should be tarred and feathered. Secondly, this is a big, expensive book which only teaches you a handful of concepts beyond the basics. I'm glad I got it from the 3rd party listings. I expected a lot from the title and description, but I firmly believe it's better to go to a bookstore, flip through the books and then go to Amazon for a good price for something you really feel is useful.

Customer Reviews:
Great book! Every parent should read this!!.......2000-11-11
I am not a mother yet, but my sister has practiced attachment parenting with all of her 5 children and they are happy children. They are not clingy, whiny brats who want everything in site. They live with us and I can see the benefits of this style of parenting.I have also seen children who's parents treat them otherwise, and I can already see the effects from it.They are more clingly, more whiny and more aggressive.I especially liked the passage about babies living in the present moment. It states that a mother who practices "detached" parenting by letting a child cry himself to sleep, etc. may honestly believe she is doing what is best for her child because her child is so happy and cheerful. But, they caution that it is because they are so desperate for mommy's love and attention when she is around that they are that way. That it can take years before you will see any psychological damage from this type of parenting.
I don't think any mother intentionally decides to do harm to their child when they do things such as letting a child cry himself to sleep. But, the truth is that they are:they just can't see the effects.Babies deserve respect just as much as adults do and this book explains how.For the reviewer who says they tell you that you shouldn't buy a crib, etc. That is not true.If you read the book thoroughly, you will see that they will tell you how to train a child lovingly to sleep in a crib if you so choose, and how to choose a child care provider if you must who will provide baby with a good experience.
So, while they suggest you don't buy cribs, etc. They also provide ways to do so lovingly if you choose to buy those things. Great book!!
Parents to be-- Buy This Book!.......2000-03-16
I thought this book was AMAZING! I had not read much about attachment parenting prior and wasn't sure it was even an option for me but after reading Lisa McCourt's book I wouldn't raise my baby any other way. I especially liked the well written psychological insights she gives. As a psychologist I have to say that her viewpoints are right on in regards to the psychological and emotional well-being of a child. As a future parent- her ideas touched my heart as well as my funny bone. Her style of writing is heartfelt as well as intelligent. I HIGHLY recommend this book!
101 ways to make a parent feel inferior.......2000-02-23
I had high hopes when I bought this book. I wanted to read about ways I could raise my baby to be well adjusted, happy and self confident but the title is misleading. The examples in the book are totally unreasonable. According to this book the only way to have a happy baby means exclusively practicing attachment parenting. Some attachment parenting ideas are great but the author says babies don't need their own room, or cribs, strollers, swings, play yards or high chairs because these "contraptions" cause the baby to be miserable. She says that when you take your baby out for a walk in a stroller "all they see is a scary, distorted, knee high view of the world." WHAT! Are toddlers, who are knee high when standing, getting a scary view of the world too? She also insinuates that parents somehow cause colic and if you practice attachment parenting (hold them at all times)then you can avoid it. My daughter did not calm when I used the stroller, swing or bouncer "contraptions" but she also did not calm when I held her at all times. She cried because she had colic not because I wasn't responding to her needs. I wish I had known more about this book before I bought it. Trust your instincts and know that putting your child in a play yard while you do the dishes is not going to cause psychological harm.
101 ways to raise a happy baby.......1999-12-21
Excellent tips and pearls of wisdom on how to raise a happy baby. It works! I have a happy baby as a result. Refreshing alternative in this selfish era of "putting yur baby on a schedule to fit your lifestyle." You can not give a child too much love. The information given is what women have known for centuries - nuture your babies. It is instict to nuture but women go against their insticts and follow the trends. Nuture your babies and they will be happy. I am sending this book to everyone I know with a baby. Also read books by Dr. Sears on attachment parenting. This book gave me the reassurance I needed to follow my heart and do what I knew was best for my baby. Advise is backed up with research studies.
Book Description
The mounted troops of the Hapsburg Empire comprised one of the most powerful forces of the Napoleonic Wars. However, from the outset the cavalry's higher command was less capable than its infantry counterpart: appointments were influenced by nepotism and politics, which resulted in commands often being given to those who lacked experience. The cavalry underwent many re-organisations and expansions in the course of the wars that attempted to redress these matters, and to modernise the force as a whole. This title examines these processes and documents in detail the tactics, uniforms and equipment of the Austrian cavalry, covering Cuirassiers, Dragoons, Chevauxlegers, Hussars, Uhlan (lancer) and auxiliary units.
Customer Reviews:
good reference for uniforms enthusiast, but..........2006-02-05
The only disadvantage of this volume is that the Author tried to discuss literally all "foot" units, including irregulars, militia and volunteers (in my opinion - these units need to be treated in separate volume). Due to the lack of space the title does not cover the Austrian REGULAR infantry uniforms, arms and equipment in full, unfortunately.

A Portrait of a Dynastic Army in Turmoil.......2001-07-31
Napoleon's Great Adversary is a well-written military study of the evolution of the Austrian Army and the role of its best commander, the Archduke Charles, during the Napoleonic Wars from 1792-1814. Charles, brother of the Austrian emperor, saw his first combat in 1792 and rapidly rose to become the driving force behind the reform movement in the often-defeated Austrian army. The author, a veteran of both the British army and the US Air Force, is a distinguished scholar and expert on the Austrian military. Dr. Rothenberg brings the full weight of his scholarly research and military insights to provide one of the few English language accounts of the Austrian military in this key period.
The book is organized in nine chapters which cover the Hapsburg monarchy and its army in 1792, the wars of the first and second coalitions, the first reform period in 1801-1805, the Ulm/Austerlitz campaigns of 1805, the second reform period of 1806-1809, the campaigns of 1809 and the final phase of the war in 1810-1814. There are 17 maps in this volume, mostly taken from other sources such as Scott Bowden. There are also 23 illustrations, mostly from the Vienna Army Museum, that depict uniforms and notable commanders. Unfortunately, the editors have not done the authors any favors and he notes this in his introduction. Given the dearth of works on this subject and the research effort made by the author, this is a shame.
The author gives an excellent description of the condition, equipment, tactics and doctrine of the Austrian army at the outset of the Napoleonic Wars. However the description of Austrian military operations in 1792-1800 is overly succinct and focuses primarily on Charles' 1796 campaign in Germany. Napoleon's 1796-1797 campaign in Italy is covered in less than two pages and the Battle of Marengo in only one paragraph, with no new Austrian perspectives offered on either campaign. Instead, the author provides considerable detail on the reform programs pushed by Charles after the defeat at Marengo. These reforms were only partly accomplished when war broke out again in 1805, resulting in the catastrophes of Ulm and Austerlitz.
Clearly the author's main interest is the period of reform that followed the defeat at Austerlitz and culminated in Austria's decision to re-enter the war in 1809. It was during this period that Charles, despite the suspicion and hostility of his brother's court, made his greatest contributions as War Minister and field commander. While not equal to the hard-hitting and fast-moving French armies, Charles was able to restore the Austrian army's cohesion and modestly improve its staying power. While he essentially bungled the outset of the 1809 campaign by failing to strike quickly at the dispersed French forces in Bavaria, Charles opted to retire behind the formidable Danube River and await Napoleon's attack. Napoleon soon obliged him with a reckless hasty assault across the river at Aspern-Essling, but a combination of Austrian tenacity and bad luck contributed to Napoleon's first battlefield defeat. The chagrined emperor, who had taken Austrian incompetence for granted, then realized that only a better-prepared offensive could succeed against the stout Austrian defense. Charles, although victorious, elected to do nothing and await the next attack. Napoleon's second crossing was successful and resulted in the bloodbath Battle of Wagram. This costly French victory taught Napoleon that Austrian armies were no longer the small, fragile forces that quickly retreated if their lines of communication were threatened, but were evolving into an attrition-oriented force. However, defeat at Wagram was the end of Charles' career and retired into relative obscurity thereafter.
This account, while somewhat superficial in the early phases of the Napoleonic Wars, is graced with considerable data on Austrian forces. At times, Austrian leadership and tactics seem almost imbecilic and rigid to a fault. Even after the defeat at Wagram, Austrian reforms were reluctant to endorse open-order skirmishing tactics that the French had been using so successfully for the past 17 years. The Austrian army had some of the finest cavalry in Europe but wasted it by splitting it up in an infantry support role and using mounted units piece-meal, just as the French would later do with their armor in 1940. Good ideas, such as introducing all-arms corps formations, were negated by attempting to apply them in the chaos of mobilization. Nevertheless, the Austrian army continued to rise and fight again, even if it was a worn, threadbare force by 1814. Military reforms did not come easily to the hide-bound Hapsburg Empire as the author notes that, "the political and military leadership realized that radical innovations in the military sphere were linked to changes in government and society that neither party desiredýBasically the Hapsburg army remained a dynastic force."
Grosse oder Kleine Deutsch?.......2000-08-24
This is the definitive work on the subject in English, written by an acknowledged authority on the subject. Telling the story of the allied commander of the period whom Wellington thought the best and most talented of the commanders who fought Napoleon and his terrible Grande Armee, this volume neatly wraps up in easily understandable prose, the problems the Austrian army, and the Archduke Charles, had to face, both with the French and their own bureaucracy.
Essentially an 18th century fighting force, with a very conservative, and many times incompetent leadership, the Austrian army and state manfully took up the challenges brought to the fore by the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon as Emperor of the French. Defeated repeatedly by Napoleon in 1797, 1800, 1805, and 1809, both the army and the Empire it defended demonstrated admirable stamina in raising armies to continually send them into the fire. With the Archduke Charles, they had a world-class commander-in-chief, but even he could not rid the army of both its inherent conservatism, and its rigid adherence to methods by now far obsolete.
The book relies on a plethora of German and Austrian references, many of them archival, and it is the only book in English that has covered the Hapsburg army in any detail. The author is a master of his subject, and the book itself is easy to read, and full of first hand information that is invaluable to the student, historian, and researcher. It is a definite must for all enthusiasts and students of the period.
This is a wonderful book!.......2000-06-14
If you are interested in the 1809 campaign, or want to know more about the Army that was Napoleon's main adversary during the entire period, then you should read this book.
A rather dry account of the Archduke Charles of Austria.......1998-01-15
When first published, this book was touted as the only English text dealing specifically with the Austrian Army and Archduke Charles. There are now several other books on essentially the same topic. I found this book to be rather too academic for the lay reader (me), dwelling as it does in considerable details on Army organisation and reorganisation and other statistical details. There is also a heavy reliance on Austrian sources for the text. The author is aware of this and tries to correct the imbalance in treatment by selective use of material from other sources. However, one is still left with the feeling that this tome is not the definitive account of the Archduke Charles.

Excellent Book.......2005-01-05
Thoroughly researched and written by James Atkinson, a retired historian and archaeologist who studied the Chickasaw for most of his professional career, this book is a must have for any scholarly library. Using both historical and archaeological data, the author provides an excellent comprehensive history of the Chickasaw Indians. This book is a must have for archaeologists and historians working in Mississippi and the southeastern United States. Anyone interested in the Chickasaw will certainly benefit from reading this book.

Book Description
The philosophy of mind has long been dominated by the view that mental states are identical with, constituted by, or grounded in brain states. Lynne Rudder Baker has been a persistent critic of this view, developing instead a theory grounded in a larger metaphysical outlook called Practical Realism. This volume is the first critical book-length evaluation of her views and criticism; leading philosophers answer her challenges and explore the consequences of Practical Realism, and Baker herself provides thoughtful replies to elaborate her own position.
