Less Preachy than Mayer's Book..........2007-06-08
I would not use this book primarily as a reference. The organization is not useful for the beginning painter. However, experienced artists will enjoy reading the book, like one would a collection of biographies about old friends. In this case though, the old fiends are pigments, oils and various resins. As an artist I found this book to be more interesting to read than Mayer's book and also a great deal less preachy. The text appears to rely on Eastlake's history with respect to which artist's what used what media, etc. These kinds of references are dated and are not supported by contemporary research. Fortunately, Doerner presents an accurate account of each material and lists both advantages and problems with each.
Painting Methods.......2007-05-24
I first came across this product in 1961 when I was exploring oil painting. It was one of the few books that gave any information about the techniques of the 'old masters' Most of the information in thsi book is unknown in art schools today and this makes it a particular valuable resource for anyone who is interested in painting like an 'old master'.
Doerner for art historical approach.......2007-04-11
Ralph Mayer's classic handbook of art materials has been revised in the fifth edition to include many modern pigments inclusing those of artistic value that come from other industries such as the automotive industry.
If you are looking for a comprehensive overview of the materials available to the artist, the Mayer manual is the ideal work.
Doerner's treatise, summed up from a series of lectures, is important as a historical work but is not as scientifically in-depth as Mayer's new edition for today's artist or conservationist. Indeed, many claims made by Doerner are not scientifically true just as in Goethe's Theory of Colors (another great book even when compared to the more scientifically accurate "Opticks" by Newton). The veracity of Doerner's approach is in question simply because many of the materials are now outdated, either for their toxicity or for the findings of the scientific community with respect to pigments (i.e. Minium, Vermilion, Naples Yellow, Whie Lead, etc. are now rare finds due to their toxicity). Although I am not necessarily a critic of Doerner, it is important to note that Doerner's importance lies in the realm of evaluative approaches with respect to the techniques of the old masters. If the work of the old masters interests you or if you are an artist, this English translation of Doerner is a worthy addition to your library.
Excellent but might not be the whole story.......2006-12-06
Max Doerner (1870-1939) taught at Academy of Fine Arts in Munich for 25+ years, and in his day an major expert on painting techniques. This book has played a major role in art history and research since the first day it was published. Do note the book was first published in 1934, and then translated from German, hence the writing style can be somewhat turbid. Perseverance pays with there being more information in here than you can shake a stick at.
My comment about being careful is a result of recent studies of old master paintings. The old masters would typically have a team of apprentices working alongside them, mixing paint, painting parts of the painting that the master was probably too bored to bother with (as well as good training for the apprentice) etc. The Master/Apprentice setup allowed for a continuous stream of knowledge being passed along the generations. However as oil paint technology advanced, in particular the ability to buy premixed paints off the shelf, the painter no longer needed a team of apprentices. He could pretty much get by on his own. Hence there was no longer anyone for the painter to pass on his knowledge to. This resulted in a considerable amount of technical knowledge being lost. (A good example is the recent theory promulgated by David Hockney that the old masters were able to paint such realistic paintings as they used rudimentary projection techniques to place a guide image on the canvas, overwhich they painted. No one knows if he is right or wrong).
From the 1800's on, technical experts such as Doerner and Charles Eastlake ("Methods and Materials of Painting") began to impart their wisdom on how the old master paintings were created. But the techniques thay had available were very rudimentary, more often than not being a case of the expert trying to reproduce a certain style and looking at the painting surface close up. The experts proferred their theories and techniques, often with much aplomb leaving no room for doubt. Unfortunately they were often quite off the mark - they could emulate a style somewhat but never 100%. There are too many variables involved even for a discerning eye. It has only been with recent advances in scientific analysis, usually chemistry based, that a truer understanding of the old master technique is finally being determined. Van Wettering's excellent "Rembrandt - the painter at work" book details the findings of extensive research carried out on a number of paintings considered to have been painted by Rembrandt. The book is 340 pages, and they still haven't got all the answers. But what they have done is to throw in to doubt the theories and techniques of the 19th/20th C experts.
There is a welter of information in this book, but if you are trying to perfectly replicate a certain old master painterly technique, and failing to do so, then be warned the experts might not be such experts afterall.
All said and done, I do recommend this book for the wealth of information it contains. Along with oil painting it addresses pastels, tempera and mural techniques. Even if you do take the techniques in here as verbatim for an old master then there is all likelihood that you'll create a great painting.
For artists.......2006-02-03
For the Artist who knows what he or she is at and its certainly not for the hobbiest who would be lost with this book. This for me is a great book as it has enrichened me....information is always good.I am delighted to have it. a worthy addition in any collection.
Book Description
Why did Frankie say "Relax"? Did anyone really want to hurt Boy George? And why didn't anybody walk in L.A.? This Ain't No Disco can't answer all these head-scratchers, but it does bring the New Wave era back with page after totally awesome page of 300 of the best album covers. This rad collection includes covers from the late 1970s to the mid-'80s and will have true believers of a certain generation totally spazzing. New Wave was defined as much by style, fashion, and graphic design as the music itself witness the ruffled cuffs and heavy makeup of the New Romantics, the skinny ties and peg-pants of the neo-Mods, and the unsettling robotic personae of Devo and Gary Numan. Bursting with wild hairstyles, futuristic typography, pastel shapes, and outlandish clothing, these are the album covers that defined an era and continue to influence music and fashion styles today. A nostalgic trek with a mental soundtrack, This Ain't No Disco will inspire readers to don those rubber bracelets once again and proclaim, "Let's dance this mess around!"

Bitter Suite .......2007-09-09
This is a great little time capsule of 80s album graphics from the sublime to the silly. I was happy to see my illustration for Yello's "Claro Que Si" included but dismayed that the book's credit line reads "artist unknown" when my signature is clearly visible.
Planless and partially off topic.......2006-11-08
Whoever threw this collection of albumcovers together, obviously wanted to make a book showing a few albumcovers, but had no clue what new wave was. Neither a classic like Roxy Music belongs in this book, nor all the unimportant american power pop bands a la photos, heaters etc, that nobody listened to and that didnt contribute anything new or of value to the music scene.
Even worse, adding idols for 12 year olds, such as Wham, Taco, Men without hats and similar crap to this collection, is an iinsult to the genre. Those we the ones we hated and never wanted t see again, if you had been born then already, you know?
Guiltless Nostalgia.......2006-02-25
Just in time for designers looking for research material on the 80's and a good coffeetable book for serious vinyl collectors. Comprehensive reproductions of album covers that were the vanguard of the new wave style. Also for those, like me, who think MTV misrepresents the 80's. This book is proof that our teenage past was full of innovation and shocking imagery. Proof that there was something before rave culture. Had a blast going over the book with others in their late 30's.
great book.......2005-08-13
Great format -good quality - rare covers in this book of new wave period - nice layout, rigorous curation , bravo , love it. Found myself trying to buy these records again but on cd!
I wish there was a 70's version too.

One Great Garfield Book!.......2002-05-13
Yes, yes, yes, yes. I know that the logos are missing from this book and that's why I lowered ratings on the other Treasuries, but since this was the first Treasury I bought, I don't really care. This book is just to funny! Garfield's Christmas, Garfield's New Years, a real great food joke, all sorts of great things are within the pages of this book, in beautiful living color, too.
We all know who Garfield is but some of us haven't really read him, yet. I used to not read him but when I discovered this gorgeous book, I couldn't get enough of him. Him, his owner, Jon, the idiot dog, Odie, all get into some very funny situations. I, like all have the other books, have read this one countless times. I love it. Garfield cracking some of his best jokes in his longer, more colorful, and more energetic Sunday strips. I'd recommend you buy this book now! It's a no regrets one, unless you regret laughing to hard.
Garfield at his BEST!!!.......1999-01-05
Everyones favorite furball is back to annoy Jon and Odie. I laughed out loud reading this book.Any Garfield fans should read it.

Book Description
This book contains a biographical account of his life by his disciple Hwui Li. It elucidates the details relating to the events in the life of the great scholars, saint and pilgrim traveler. The life is divided into five books and covers the entire life-span of Hiuen-Tsiang, beginning with his birth till his death in the year 664. The description of the eventful life of his master which was as much occupied by travels as by an almost unbelievably gigantic task of translating a large number of original Buddhist works from Sanskrit into Chinese is marked by reverential attitude and makes a fascinating reading.
But more than that, it is a compendium of information on contemporary China, India and those remote parts of Central Asia which the great pilgrim traversed during his journey to India. Samuel Beal's translation of this book from original Chinese is an authentic rendering with copious notes on controversial matters. It also contains an account of the works if I-Tsing who also journeyed into India in the footsteps of Hiuen-Tsiang.

ò True tales from the trenches, where you'll see how other mothers handled problems--sometimes successfully, sometimes not.
ò Dealing with tantrums--your child's and yours.
ò Loving, fun ways to launch your little one on a glorious learning curve.

Customer Reviews:
Why don't we hear more about this fabulous book?.......2001-03-04
I have read almost everything from What to Expect to Penelope Leach to Brazelton to Spock. This is the smartest, most helpful practically, and most empathetic parenting book I've found. The only other book I've felt so intellectually and emotionally connected to is her other one, So Glad We Waited. I wonder why this book isn't a big best seller? I give this one and her other one to all my friends for baby gifts. I can't recommend it enough!
everything you need to know but didn't know whom to ask.......2001-02-14
This book is terrific! From now on, I'm giving it to all my new mom friends. Lois Nachamie covers all the aspects of child rearing that nobody else seems sensitive enough to discuss or even notice. She has a psychologist's understanding of child development and the wisdom of a philosopher. With her incredible good humor, she brings to light the thousand daily interactions that in so many unseen ways teach kids right and wrong (not to mention manners) and shape their values. Thus she covers topics like materialism and greed (the "gimmie gimmies"); sexual stereotypes; the truth about sharing; telephone manners for kids; and --believe it or not -- the usefulness of television as a teaching tool. And so much more! I particularly love how she says to respond your child's inevitable questions about where babies come from (teach them the truth -- or a portion of it -- but teach them also the mystery). She is pro-discipline (yeah!) and she encourages parents not to cede their power to their children, as so many parents do these days. This book moved me in so many ways I can not express here. Lois Nachamie is amazingly attuned to the emotional trials of any mother who is really trying to listen to and connect to her child in a mature, loving and respectful way. If that includes you, buy this book.
This is the very best book on parenting -- bar none!.......1998-12-10
I began reading this book while waiting for my adoptive daughter to be born. Within the first two pages I was so excited about parenting I thought I would burst. Loins Nachmanie makes me feel like parenting is the most creative, intelligent, resourceful and useful vocation in the world. I've given lots of copies to friends and one to my sister who is a preschool teacher! Nachmanie obviously loves children and her down-to-earth, funny, and common-sense approach to raising them with love and guidance is a breath of fresh air. I've read lots and lots of parenting books and this is absolutely the best!
Give this book to anyone who has kids - run don't walk!.......1998-11-04
This is a smart, funny, incredibly informative and down to earth book and makes a great gift for anyone with kids. I've already shared it with friends and family. Lois Nachamie knows what she's talking about and says it in a way that's easy to hear. I highly recommend it!
An extremely funny, practical, original parenting book........1998-10-30
This is a quick review, because I have three children and books of my own to write. But I would like to rave about Big Lessons because it is the funniest and most solid book on parenting I've come across, and I've read a lot of books over the last ten years. It's full of stories -- stories Lois Nachamie tells of her own parenting and the thousands of parents she's worked with -- as well as tips you can actually remember when you need them. She names a problem, then walks you through what you can do (often hilarious), might do, might want to do, and ways that you can approach it, all with the very clear notion that it's always up to you, the parent, and your own particular child. For example, when she discusses "teaching," the natural curiousity of children, and their propensity to learn, she tells the story of the two and a half year old who says "Blue," and the mother who can say "yes. Blue," but says, "Well, it's a kind of blue, but we really call it aqua. You see, the printer added green. It's not a true blue. This is the color we often associate with water, particularly Mediterranean water, and interestingly enough, in Italian aqua means water, whereas in Spanish agua is water. Blah, blah, blah..." And after this, a very gentle discussion of how a bright child might even stop sharing perceptioins after such an onslaught from Mommy. This is the kind of stuff I can read for hours; tender, funny, and really extraordinarily informative. If there's one book you should buy to read for the first five years of parenting, buy this one. I wish I'd had it when I was trying to figure out sleep for my kids, food, sexual and gender stuff, and handling danger. The kind of tips she gives are really solid, e.g., tell your child that when she's lost or in trouble to go find another mommy, someone with children. This is advice that's down to earth and yet rings with the brilliant love of a mother who knows what she's saying.
Book Description
Though it started on the day that would "live in infamy," few know the full story of the battle that took place on Wake Island. With extensive research into both sides of the conflict, including interviews with survivors and Japanese reports, military historian John Wukovits breaks new ground on the assault, offering a complete picture of the compelling and heroic struggle.
"Wukovits has given this epic drama new meaning for a changing time." (Michael E. Haskew, WWII History Magazine)
Customer Reviews:
WHAT A BARGAIN!.......2007-09-11
After seeing the History Channel special on Wake Island, I just had to have more, and this book fit the bill. The Alamo of the Pacific, how true that was. Well researched and written, and a nice hefty work to boot. It is hard to believe that you can find them for under $1. Be sure and go for the hardback edition, as you'll want this one to be a keeper.
Couldn't put it down.......2007-08-02
How often do you read a history book that's so engrossing you hate to set it down? Only as an exception, and this book is exceptional. The background is so well established that you'll feel like an island resident yourself by the time that first wave of bombers hit. The occasional humor further lends itself to making the book multi-dimensional and realizing the normality of the civilians and servicemen who became Wake heroes. I was also touched by some attention being paid to what a person's first taste of combat is like. 'It's okay to shoot at these guys, right? To actually try and kill them, right?'
It's just an amazing account. Read it - you'll think you lived through the whole thing.
Pacific Alamo.......2007-04-09
To put it simply, Pacific Alamo: The Battle for Wake Island by John Wukovits is an excellent addition to any library. This well written book is thoroughly researched and filled with first hand accounts of this struggle during the opening days of the war in the pacific.
After the successful Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor and the Philippines the American people were in shock. Much of the American Pacific fleet was damaged or resting on the bottom at Pearl. Macarthur's command in the Philippines was in retreat and Pacific skies were dominated by pilots of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The Armies and Navies of the United States and Great Britain, were being driven back by what was considered by many, an invincible war machine. The Japanese were riding a wave of victories and America was preparing for the possible invasion of Hawaii or the west coast, with little left to defend either. Moral was low and the American people needed hope.
Wake Island, a tiny atoll half way between Japan and Hawaii, unprepared and manned by civilian contractors and a small force of marine, navy, and army personnel was about to enter the annals of history
Valuable History.......2006-12-24
I thoroughly enjoyed John Wukovits publication concerning the battle for Wake Island and the post battle information concerning the soldiers and civilians on Wake. One of the best insights into the conflict focused on the propaganda variable used by the United States to rally a nation. Another important trait is the focus on excellent and exciting detail concerning the battles on the island.
The Admiral who left these guys to surrender really did the military a diservice and I felt like a U.S. reinforcement and resupply would have ultimately held off the Japanese. The courage of those who fought at Wake is definitely captured by the author in "The Battle for Wake Island." The Marines and naval aviators were defenitely inspiring with their heroic defense.
It was also an interesting study of life in the prison camps, with wonderful first hand accounts. The Marines in the Pacific accomplished some heroic feats and it all started at Wake Island. If you decide to read this book you will be blessed to learn about some great American heroes. The civilian factor on the island and some of their heroic feats also adds more interest into this incredible account of combat and survival. The book also does a good job in telling the story of the Japanese as conquerers and then being conquered by a mightier moral/military allied nation.
Just read it! An important American saga, more than a mere research resource........2006-10-06
An excellent and recent recounting of the struggles faced by a hopefully never forgotten saga in both American and Marine Corps history.
John Wukovits provides the reader with an assembly of perspectives from the defenders on Wake, the American WWII home front, and the Japanese attackers stitched together with the recent (2002) accounts of the surviving defenders themselves.
Wukovits `s addition to the Wake Island literary anthology is a gripping study of the atoll's most historic moments. The story follows selected men, not just Marines, from their stateside civilian lives to their enlistments or private construction contract jobs on Wake.
Every tale of Wukovits's interviewees will hopefully make the reader value the many freedoms we take for granted.
The book is a fair and noble salute to the men, all the men, who faced off with the Imperial Japanese Navy to lift the United States out of its Pearl Harbor gloom.

highly entertaining history.......2005-08-24
in reply to the claim that Tabari is almost as blasphemous as Rushdie, Professor Mohja Kahf drily remarked that its no surprise, since both are writers of fiction! Any historian who writes a couple of hundred years after the event and reports dialogue, witticisms and even facial expressions is obviously writing a lot of fiction, but fiction or not, its high drama, presented in vivid detail. Tabari makes no attempt at social or economic analysis and has little to say about what the "common people" might have been doing and why, but his history is one of the prime sources for all the famous stories of islamic history and reading it is the best way to get an idea of what the times were like. Particular details may or may not be true, but the development of the community was based on exactly these stories and their impact is real even if their content is sometimes not. Tabari also has a flair for the dramatic. reading his account of the assasination of Usman or the martyrdom of Hussain makes one think of the amazing movies that could be made based on this material! well worth a read....
