Book Description
Since the popular Museum of Contemporary Art exhibit of 1989, Blueprint for Modern Living, much attention has been paid to the pioneering work done by the architects of the Case Study Program. Sponsored by John Entenza's Art & Architectue Magazine, the Case Study Houses program brought new thinking, techniques, and materials to post-war California house building. Contains the work of Charles Eames, Eero Saarinen, Craig Ellwood, Pierre Koenig, Richard Neutra, William Wurster, and others.
Customer Reviews:
The shock of the new again...The Case Study Houses.......2006-10-29
I completely forgotten about the Case study houses and how much they have influenced how we live today...til I read this book.
Back in 1945, John Entenza's Arts & Architecture magazine, commissioned major architects of the day, to design and build inexpensive and efficient model homes for the residential housing boom caused by the end of World War II and the return of millions of soldiers.
The houses are amazing to say the least - and although the book has only black & white photo's, they are the original photo's when the houses were first built - so you see what the the architects (Like Richard Neutra, Charles & Ray Eames for example) were experimenting with - materials from wood to steel to even plastic...creating open planned abodes with floor to ceiling doors & windows opening up these dwellings to natural light and views of the surrounds... or to the new to patio or terraces..from bedrooms with built in robes and furniture...to kitchens with all mod conds and bench seating...to ensuite bathrooms with double vanities...to open fireplaces, sunken rooms and split level floors - all of which we take for granted today...the indoor and outdoor blended, and the home started to take form and life ( or should I say 'lifestyle') of it's own - not just a art deco or colonial or Spanish mission revival box - it became a living functional machine...
The program ran from 1945 until the mid 60's. Most of the houses were built in California. The case study houses in their time started basic and pure, but ended up costly and a luxury item for rich americans.
It exploded the idea of the traditional house - and the way we interact with it...in fact if you look at homes from the Mc Mansions of the new estate suburbs to the more expensive commisions some architects are lucky enough to create - all (yes even the ones which look like a copy of Tara) have used, abused and quite frankly stolen ideas from the case studies...that is the legacy which has survived.
This book was meant more of a record than a historical piece (originally published in the mid sixties) - however it has great photo's and introduction. Yes there has been more in depth books on the subject, but this is more so an good solid foundation of the homes, plans are included and the original black & whites photo's of the homes - so we can see what the intention of the architects - raw, clean, living.
A good supplement on modern architecture in Southern CA........2000-05-27
This book made me aware of how visions of residential space has changed over the decades (such as the fact that family homes were often equipped with only two bedrooms). I enjoyed having the addresses on these homes listed in this paperback also -- now I can take an architectural tour on my own. More importantly, I learned the legacy of Arts & Architecture, the now defunct magazine that made the Case Study project possible.

Book Description
Portraits from Life in 29 Steps presents an elegant, simple and direct procedure for painting a convincing portrait in 29 logical steps. John Howard Sanden has developed this method in more than three decades of painting, demonstrating and teaching.
At the heart of this book are two complete portrait-painting demonstrations; each of the 29 steps is descriptively titled, explained and illustrated to show the clear progression of the portrait. Sanden uses an exciting and appealing premier coup approach to painting, where the artist attempts to execute a finished painting from the very first stroke.
Customer Reviews:
misleading title.......2007-09-09
As a portrait artist, I was hoping to glean some new tips/tricks from this book. What Sanden illustrates in the "29 steps" is nothing more than a quick (completed in one hour) color study of his subjects. He admits in the text toward the end that the portraits featured in the book actually took many days to paint. Really, what a surprise! While it was interesting to see how he prepares his canvas and blocks in his subject, Sanden does not spend any time on the techniques he uses to give his portraits their "finish," which is what most portrait artists are seeking to improve upon. What he does focus on are his own brand of paints that he pushes throughout the pages.
Don't be fooled by the portrait on the cover. If you want to end up with a finished painting that looks like that, you will NOT learn how to do it in this book. If you are a beginning painter, and need to learn basic underpainting, or how to block in a subject, then this book might hold some interest.
What can I say..It Sanden!.......2007-06-13
This book is so good for portrait artist's. Even advanced artist's will find this book helpfull. It's a great way to start, and he is well established in the Art world. it is worth it.
Excellent Resource.......2007-03-16
I was already a portrait painter when I bought this book. I was not turned off by the offer to buy his products. As a matter of fact, I've thought of buying them to check out the quality of his oils. Since buying the book, it has gotten plenty of use. For those of you who gave it a low score, had you really delved into it, you would have seen that he does present a formula for mixing portrait colors. This is something that I found very valuable. The reality is that we can pull a little expertise from all art books and use it to paint like ourselves. This book has been well worth the money I spent. I did not buy it with the intention of painting like the author.
Blatant plug.......2006-12-19
I just glanced through this book at a local art store. Initially it looked to provide some useful information with 2 well laid out "how to paint a portrait" follow alongs. One was sufficiently interesting that I was thinking of buying the book.
Then, alas, it all went wrong. A closer study of the text etc. revealed that the book is nothing more than a shameless plug for the author's own line of paints. And indeed there is nothing wrong with helping the painter out and provide them with the various tones they need pre-mixed. But I don't understand why I have to buy the book. Wouldn't it be better if the book was free or included a coupon for a set of the paints with the cost being the price of the paints MINUS the cost of the book. I cannot think of any scenario where I have to buy one item to then buy the sellers main item. Very poor marketing by Sanden and definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. Isn't this like one step up from "Painting by Numbers"? I will not be buying the book nor his paints. If you want to paint in the style of Sanden then by all means go ahead and buy the book and the paints. But in the long run you are probably doing yourself a great dis-service as your portrait technique will be locked in to a very narrow system.
Get yourself a book on portrait painting that illustrates the tried and tested methods over the years, how to achieve the effects and learn how to mix colours in the process. Also buy your paints from an established manufacturer. You could be so locked in to Sanden's techniques and have a number of his paints. What happens if the company goes bust? - I don't know of any other manufacturer who sell paints labelled by tones. Work your way up the same learning curve that Rembrandt, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Ingres and all the other masters also had to climb. In the long run you'll be much better off for it.
Do you even know what is in Sanden's paints? And how they will endure the tests of time. Stick with a reputable manufacturer whose reputation is founded upon being 100% up front with the artist.
Avoid this book. 0 stars.
I just noticed that North Light are the publishers. For the most part I find their range of books to be uninspiring. Makes me wonder why NL even agreed to publish this book in the first place.
Portraits from life in 29 steps.......2006-08-29
I found it very practical. I felt almost like in a good live art class.
I already improve my tecnique after a got this very good book.

What makes Rowell one of the world's top photojournalists and sets him apart from others in the field? Steve Werner, editor of Outdoor Photographer, says the magazine's most popular columnist pursues his art the way a mountain climber pursues a peak: "planning the logistics, overcoming the hardships and conquering the unknown." The text, based on Rowell's monthly column for the magazine, is accompanied by images "chosen to illustrate concepts" rather than exhibit his best work -- or so he claims. Don't believe him; the pictures will blow you out of the water as surely as a well-placed stick of dynamite.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing book.......2006-11-06
This Galen Rowell's book is another one to have in your library. Very interesting and with a lot of great stories about photography and adventure related to photography. It is especially useful to those of you who enjoy photographing off the beaten track, in extreme environments. Galen gives you many ideas to carry your gear and techniques to make that "one in a lifetime" shot. Although the book is excellent I recieved my copy damaged on the back, it looks like the book was not new, it was thorn in the upper right corner. As I am a customer from Spain, it would cost me too much to send the copy back and ask for a new one, so I kept the copy. I wanted to write it down as I don't want other customers to suffer from my unluck.
Not Mountain Light, but Galen Rowell!.......2006-11-06
Ok, this book maybe isn't Mountain Light or The Inner Game of outdoor photography, but again Galen Rowell hooks us onto the chair, and makes us travel around the world, not only the physical world, but also the photography and composition worlds. The only but important complaint: after some days of reading, the pages started to fall of the book, and I had to re-glue it...
Great book, terrible binding.......2004-02-24
The book is great. Rowell's essays are very informative, fun to read, and give a lot of insight into the world of adventure photography. However, the binding from Sierra Club Books is terrible. I'm halfway through the book and the glue came apart, leaving me with hundreds of loose pages. This is especially frustrating since I planned to use the book as a reference, frequently re-reading and looking up pertinent information.
My favorite book of all-time........2003-06-14
I've read thousands and thousands of books of all types, and this is my favorite one of all-time. This converted me into being a Galen Rowell fan. The photos were great as usual, but what got me was his writing. He is an amazing author! I have learned so much from his writings, and I still learn everytime I re-read the book. He is funny and in addition to being intelligent. His passion comes across clearly in this book. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes to read, and you'd probably become a photographer afterwards.
... the words paint pictures too !.......2001-03-16
It cannot be helped ... I'm partial to Rowell ... have been, ever since I started serious photography in '89 ... His photographs have always left me in awe ...
So you can imagine my surprise, when I found myself reading the words with as much care as I was looking at the photos ... Rowell carefully describes his preparations, his thoughts and preferences ... he writes as he photographs ... in a direct manner, with few affectations and no gimmicks ... The reader learns not so much about f-stops or apertures, but is introduced into the mind set of an adventurer, an exceptional photographer ... whose approach to image making is both pragmatic and inspirational ... the photographs are more instructional than usual ... but an exceptionally good read!

Book Description
Beasts, savages, natural disasters -- these are the threats of the jungle, the things Tarzan has learned to control. But there is nothing natural about his current quarry! This collection features three separate, monster-ridden story arcs: "Le Monster," a Phantom of the Opera story; "Modern Prometheus," a Frankenstein story; and "Tooth & Nail," a Jekyll & Hyde story. Beautifully colored, each story showcases its own, period-conscious pallette. There's also a cover gallery section featuring the work of Bernie Wrightson, William Kaluta, and Mark Schultz plus character sketches by Stan and Vince.
Customer Reviews:
Tarzan : The Monster.......2006-11-07
The collection was nominated in the Harvey Awards for Best Writer the year it was published. The artists Roucher and Manoukian went above and beyond the call on the pages they produced. Since the artists live in Paris, they walked the route from the Moulin Rouge to the Opera House and reproduced the actual street views in their art. The final backdrop in the Opera is a reproduction of an antique backdrop that is still in existence today. Even the magazines appearing in the newsstands are actual period publications. For each of the stories I researched a half dozen books on both the period and the people I feature in the stories. Many of the character anecdotes are true. A lot of care went into every detail of the production of this beautifully written, drawn and designed collection.
Tarzan Meets Other Liturature Classics.......2004-04-22
I just picked up a collection of collected Tarzan insertion stories. Set in some of the blank spaces of Tarzan's history, Tarzan runs into some very interesting characters.
In the first story, Tarzan is taken to the Paris opera where he runs afoul of a character known as the Phantom of the Opera. With Tarzan's intervention this classic tale ends on a much more hopeful note.
In the second adventure, Tarzan is joined by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Nikola Tessla and Thomas Edison. The characters are involved in an adventure involving a mad monk and an old book. The book is the diary of Baron Frankenstein and the monk is his creation. In the end Tarzan prevents any further dabbling in creating life and tells the creature of Pellucidar where he will be able to fit in.
The final story in the collection has Tarzan and a zoo gorilla track down the fiend that calls itself Mr. Hyde. This is probably the best written of the three tales as it gives some very interesting insights into the characters of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Book Description
This book deals with her 25 years after Helen Keller left Radcliffe--the story of her work and friendships.
Customer Reviews:
Great historical read!.......2004-07-28
This is such an excellent book, especially for those who enjoy learning more about history. So many people know the story of her childhood, and how she overcame being deaf and blind, but that's not her real achievement. She did so many important things after that time, but no one really knows anything about that, it seems. I think this should be a book every high school and college history student should have to read. I'd recommend it to anyone!

Upon the 60th anniversary of the battle for Okinawa comes this remembering of the Tenth Army of the Pacific Theatre campaign, recounted by Bob Green, then a 20-year-old Second Lieutenant.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Book on the Battle of Okinawa .......2007-03-25
Superb book; "Leading a platoon is like a plate of spaghetti. You can't push the noodles forward with a fork; you have to pull them from the front." This explanation of tactical combat leadership was made by Brigadier General Easly, ACG US 96th Infantry Division in WWII on Okinawa. Easly practiced what he preached; he was wounded twice by sniper fire on Okinawa, the second time mortally. The author served as a tank platoon leader on Okinawa in WWII. His book is an autobiography of his experiences. Imagine leading a tank platoon into combat for the first time. General Easly has just told you in simple terms how to lead your men. You do. As your tank penetrates into a Japanese defensive position, all heck breaks loose. Japanese weapons are firing at your platoon; suicide units armed with satchel charges are rushing your tanks, while you try to direct the action of your platoon and crew. Suddenly, you hear a bang and notice an antitank shell has penetrated your tank. You know this because you can see daylight through the hole it made in the armor. Bang; another hit. Your loader is screaming; that antitank round has just ripped off his leg. While you try to tie a tourniquet on your loader's stump, and load a round into the main gun with bloody hands, and give fire commands to your gunner, another round hits your tank. Finally, your gunner knocks out the antitank gun. You and your men bail out under enemy fire and exit the action on another tank. This is your first taste of combat; there will be many more. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BOOK ON THE US ARMY and ARMORed COMBAT in the Pacific. Superb; you won't be able to put it down. As a former Marine infantryman, I salute your service to our country in one of the bloodiest battles in WWII. Semper Fi!
Book Description
The daughter of Oklahoma sodbusters and a student of Edward Everett Dale Angie Debo was an unlikely forerunner of the New Western History. Breaking with the followers of Frederick Jackson Turner, Debo viewed the westward movement of European Americans as conquest rather than settlement. Her studies on the Five Tribes presented the Native American point of view and incorporated ethnological insights more than a decade before ethnohistory emerged as a separate field.
Shirley A. Leckie's biography of Debo is the first to assess the significance of Oklahoma's pioneering historian on the historiography of the American Indian, the writing of regional history, and the development of national law and court cases involving indigenous people. Leckie sheds light on Debo's family's background, her personality, and the impact of gender discrimination on her career. Finally, Leckie clarifies why Debo became a scholarly pioneer and, later, a "warrior-scholar" activist working on behalf of Native Americans during a period of changing Indian policy.
Customer Reviews:
A workmanlike biography of a conscientious historian.......2004-12-23
Leckie's biography of Angie Debo (1890-1987) is unusual in that it was to some degree inspired by a film instead of the other way around. A fuller account of Debo's story is well worth the telling if for no other reason than that Leckie sands down the edges of some of the more extreme claims made on Debo's behalf in "Indians, Outlaws and Angie Debo," the 1988 PBS film produced by Barbara Abrash and Martha Sandlin. (Debo herself had a hand in creating one serious inaccuracy in the film by implying that her beloved mentor, Edward Everett Dale, had prevented her best-known work, And Still the Waters Run, from being published by the University of Oklahoma Press.)
Leckie's biography is sympathetic without being uncritical, and the author notes how Debo's independent thinking may have hindered as well as advanced her career. Debo was a life-long diary keeper, and Leckie makes good use of those many volumes in a biography that is sensibly, if not excitingly, written. I would have preferred less about Debo's reactions to news events and foreign travels and more about Debo's religion, which is treated cursorily even though Debo both served as a Methodist lay pastor and opposed missionary activity on the reservation.
Who's Afraid of Angie Debo?.......2000-09-30
The same guys who were afraid of Virginia Woolf, that's who. Shirley Leckie has written a fine biography in the conservative biography tradition. It is published by the same press that gave Angie Debo the runaround back when she was doubting her own significance as a writer in mid-career. When she was in despair. Published by the same university, who, in the heyday of history department chauvinism, chose to groom and tenure by far less accomplished male scholars rather than to throw a crumb to Miss Debo, the one whose work would be of supreme importance. Leckie's version of the story is balanced in tone, raking no muck and slinging no mud, but the truth comes glimmering through, even so. Handled especially well is the relationship Debo shared with her mentor, Dale. He might have actually been a two-faced jerk who wouldn't have rescued her or her manuscripts from a criminal Faulkner fire. Leckie veers away from harsh judgement and leaves it to the reader to decide how much he really cared. Many things come to mind from reading this insightful book, especially the fact that men who ran history departments could get by with a lot of crap, like promoting their publish-nothing buddies while placing one of the century's outstanding and memorable historians such as Debo on the back burner. Is there any doubt that she may have scorched back there? Angie Debo was the last of the old maids in many respects. Never married, never encouraged flirtation. Lived with and lived for her mother in the little town of Marshall. Pretty much given the cold shoulder by the universities during her 30s and 40s. Finally, in her fifties, the Old Boys loosened up a little. Leckie does make it clear that Debo was more of a lone wolf than a team player, especially when the team-players were a little thick. And yeah, I guess I wanted more from a bio, wanted Debo to be more than an old maid, jilted by the academic system, as far as personal relationships go. Perhaps if the biographer had focused upon the truly intense relationship Angie Debo had for her own writing and research of the Creeks and Choctaw tribes, the drama of the bio would have been heightened. When the life and the work is one and the same, as it was with Debo, the life had to have higher highs and lower lows. I think her early childhood illnesses which nearly killed her probably altered her ways that the biographer did not explore. Maybe the Debo soup was actually a little thicker than that which has been served here. The biographer chose to be choosy, to write a tasteful and conservative assessment of a life. Maybe Miss Debo wouldn't want anymore said than that. Could it be I suffer from some kind of popular misconception about the life of such a significant writer, believing like Dolly Pardon, who said: "Some people think less is more, but I say more is more"?
