5 out of 5 stars A Feast for the Eyes.......2007-09-23

I just love to flip through this book before going to bed. The beautiful pictures relax me, or, give me so many ideas that I can't fall asleep! There are definitely projects that I will try, and some that I won't. That being said, it is worth the price for the photos alone.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderous!.......2007-06-12

This was my first experience with Cath Kidston and I give her a "thumbs up". This book is a keeper with beautiful illustrations of fabrics and with inspirational projects, most of which anyone can do. It is well written with interesting inserts.
Although I'm not "into" the bright, colorful fabrics from the 60's, I loved the faded and pastel ones shown from other eras. As they say: "Take what you need and leave the rest". Besides, in my minds eye I could see those same things in pastel.

4 out of 5 stars Great inspiration, short on actual projects.......2007-05-27

I love this book for its style and photos and inspirations. Would have enjoyed a little more practical applications.

5 out of 5 stars If you love vintage fabrics..........2007-02-28

...this book is for you. There are some great ideas about different ways to use all those wonderful vintage fabric scraps, tablecloths, and curtain panels you just couldn't live without but now need a home. Just the idea of scanning the fabrics (ingenious!) is worth the price alone!

This book offers absolutely nothing of value. As a person who sews, I was very disappointed.

This is more than helpful for my art class. This is great!

3 out of 5 stars Great idea, needs more variety........2006-10-16

I'll start by saying this is a fantastic idea. The interface provides an amazing amount of freedom for viewing the models. However, as an illustrator who needs a broad range of children to work from, this collection was lacking. If you're looking for an animated young girl, this will do you fine. The handful of models that follow are less interested. If you need both boys and girls from each age group you're out of luck with this one. Perhaps the sequal will be broader.

Book Description

Philadelphia Stories is a kind of family album. As in their earlier volume, Still Philadelphia: A Photographic History, 1890-1940, Miller, Vogel, and Davis have collected photographs of ordinary lives and daily events from 1920 to 1960 that have shaped the collective memory of people in the Philadelphia area. Through a series of photo essays, Philadelphia Stories evokes the mood of an era that embraced the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and the complacent prosperity of the 1950s. Contemporary photos document physical changes in the metropolitan area: the developing skyline, the streets of rowhouses, the expanding suburbs. Details on homelife, food prices, school activities, local politics, shopping, social mores, and neighborhood customs chronicle experiences that are in many ways distinct to Philadelphians but also indicative of dramatic social, political, and economic shifts in the United States over forty years.

Using photojournalism as the dominant style of documentary photography—and consciousness making—the book also features three prototypical family albums. These collections of snapshots taken by local residents to record weddings, holidays, and other family events not only depict how people saw themselves at various times but reveal the kinds of memories they wanted to keep. While major national events create the context for this social history, the book focuses on the daily lives of Philadelphians: as they cope with the Depression, participate in New Deal programs, buy automobiles and television sets, grow Victory Gardens, hold air raid drills, visit the Freedom Train, move to the suburbs, cling to old neighborhoods, and maintain tradition amid flux.

Philadelphia Stories celebrates the recent past in the words and images of those who experienced it. It is a family album for all who know and love the city.

Philadelphia Stories is an outstanding photo-journal chronicling the years 1920 through 1960; the photos are excellent and really took me back to my childhood days through Port Richmond, Kensington, Juniata and Frankford! Book Description

The experiences of a young Ontario teacher, fresh out of college, who moves to the frozen Canadian North, are chronicled here in this collection of letters to home. Stationed in the small hamlet of Pelly Bay, teaching Inuit elementary school children, she faces a culture for which traditional school-based education is alien, and a land which sees no sun for several months of the year. Yet the beauty of the landscape and the warm, generous people ultimately win out over the many challenges, and while coping with the frustrations and hardships, she learns a great deal not only about the Arctic's land and people, but also about herself.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Teaching Inuit Students.......2001-12-14

What is it like to teach Inuit children in Canada's Arctic? What is it like to be a first-year teacher? What is it like to be thousands of miles away from one's home and family? These are just some of the questions that the author addresses in this slim compilation (l54 pages) of 38 letters, 65 journal entries, and 4 pages of pictures.
Pelly Bay, now called Kugaaruk, is in Canada's central Arctic. Ellen Langs Gray, a young teacher from southern Ontario, taught there for four years starting in August of 1990. The letters she wrote home and her journal entries depict her first year of teaching and living there. Through Lang's writing we experience northern life and culture and gain insights into the challenges and joys of being a teacher of Inuit students. This book is full of terrific descriptions.
Some examples include a church service:
"I went to church this week. Not only was I the only non-Catholic there, I was the only non-Inuit. Talk about being a minority. When I arrived at 10:55, there were two people there. I couldn't understand why they'd set up so many chairs. The service started at 11:05, and people drifted in at 11:10 or at 11:20, right up until 11:40. By then, there were about 150 people. You couldn't hear the priest at times because of all the babies and toddlers, not that it bothered me, who couldn't understand a word. I quite enjoyed it, though."
    everyday life in the north:
"There is something wrong with the water system at school. We run out of water a couple of times a week and have to phone for an emergency refill. I haven't yet run out of water at home. I've learned to time my laundry, etc. around delivery days. You can get extra or after-hours delivery if you run out, but it costs 15.00."
    and the challenges of teaching:
"I've got my class routines more or less under control. The slang word the kids use here is "boring." Everything is boring" reading is boring, math drill is boring, not letting them chew snuff is boring, falling in the mud is boring, lining up quietly is boring, and they groan it with such a look of disgust. It hurts my feelings somewhat to have all my carefully-thought-out ideas dismissed as "so boring", but I'm getting used to it now. I just groan back at them."
This book is an enjoyable read. For anyone interested in teaching, working in the north, or the life of the Inuit it is a bargain!

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Gunner's Fans.......2007-02-13

It was a complete but not very detailed overview of Guns N' Roses. It was a good introduction to the band but if you're a hardcore Gunner's fan it just wont satisfy your craving. It mentioned some of the band's antics but I'm sure they get up to a lot more mischief and mayhen than what was written. It was mostly about Axl. Good picy's but only in black and white.

4 out of 5 stars Great GNR book.......2001-11-22

Excellent book, very nice pictures too, fun to read. One of the best about Guns n' Roses. If you're a fan, don't hesitate!

    4 out of 5 stars a fun read.......1999-12-15

this book is good for fans who don't know much about the band trying to pick up information on them. Since i didn't tune into the band until 5 years or so after their last tour i found it very helpful. it is pretty good and interesting reading if you are really that interested in the band.

3 out of 5 stars Complete and a must have, but left a sour taste.......1999-11-16

Although I found "Over the Top: The True Story of Guns N Roses" the most complete history, and probably most insightful that I have ever read, I had some problems with the book that left a sour taste in my mouth by the end. First off, somewhere in the middle of the book, Putterford is discussing the declining "style" of the concerts during the Illusions tour, he refers to W. Axl Rose as pulling a Donny & Marie by singing a duet with "female singer, Shannon Hoon" on Don't Cry. His complete disregard for who Hoon really is astounded me and made me be suspicious of his credibility. Also, I cannot stand it when music journalists criticize the Illusion albums. Most fans know that Appetite was the defining album for GN'R, no one disputes that, but journalists rarely give credit where credit is due. The Illusion albums showed a band that no longer lived off of Sunset Strip, I don't think anyone expected them to sing about drugs and alcohol forever, they're in the thirties. In my opinion, the Illusion albums were musically better than Appetite could ever be. Also Putterford's book seems to give a lot of new information, but all it really does is take all the rumors and press releases over the last decade and link them together. He criticizes the band for being in it for the money, but then you have to wonder....what's his purpose in writing this book?

4 out of 5 stars The damned truth is hard to swallow, great book..........1999-09-02

Its really unconfortable for a fan to read this book, it tells you everything you don't want to know as a GNR worshiper. It's the damned truth, all the prima dona stuff from Axl, and his personal feelings, make you see Axl as a human being, and lower him from his demi-god state. Its a great book, I recomend it to GNR fans who CARE ABOUT THE TRUTH...

        Book Description

In The Conquest of the Sahara, Douglas Porch tells the story of France's struggle to explore and dominate the great African desert at the turn of the century. Focusing on the conquest of the Ahaggar Tuareg, a Berber people living in a mountain area in central Sahara, he goes on to describe the bizarre exploits of the desert's explorers and conquerors and the incompetence of the French military establishment. Porch summons up a world of oases, desert forts and cafés where customers paid the dancer by licking a one-franc piece and sticking it on her forehead.

The Conquest of the Sahara reveals the dark side of France's "civilizing mission" into this vast terrain, and at the same time, weaves a rich tale of extravagant hopes, genius and foolhardiness.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Beau Geste It Wasn't.......2007-02-18

Sorry about the three stars Professor Porch, but I just couldn't get interested in the uniform fate of the various expeditions which the French mounted from 1880 to 1910 to "conquer" the Sahara. Every one was a flop in one way or another, some fatally so. Thirst, heat, distance, ignorance and the Taureg did them in.

You are a great military historian, Professor Porch - particularly of the French Army. and you did your homework on this, but at the end of the day it seems to me the Sahara is just as it was in 1880 when the French wanted to build a railway from Biskera where the desert begins south of Algiers to Equatorial Africa. There wasn't one then, and there isn't one now. In fact in this huge expanse of the earth's suface (which, placed on the map of the Unted States, would extend from San Francisco to the Ohio River) there are still only three north-south "roads" noted on my map of the Sahara from the National Geographic Atlas of the world and they are the thinnest of red lines placed over the dotted red lines where the trails used to be; and there isn't one that goes east to west. The Sahara is as empty now as it was a hunded years ago, except we now look down on it from 30,000 feet.

Every one of us who was a boy in the 1920s read Beau Geste or Beau Sabreur of Beau Ideal or one or all of them and everyone of us who did was captivated by the romance of the French Foreign Legion. Remember the movie staring Ronald Coleman with Brian Donlevy as the sadistic evil sargeant? And who can forget Beau Geste propping up the dead men in the parapets to make the Arabs think the fort was still functioning, or Beau putting the body of Donlevy at the foot of Beau's brother's bier then setting it afire because a Geste dies with a dead dog at his feet!

Alas, those books are almost as irrelevant to the story of the Sahara as this rather dreary recitation of successive failure and thwarted and foolish colonial enterprise, an irelevant footnote to history.

But should you read it? Yes you should - by all means. I became fascinated by the Taureg, by the desert, with immense space, with Porch's dry descriptions of skirmishes which he calls "battles", with caravans of a thousand people - men women and children - bringing slaves and gold and ivory from Central Africa to the Mediterranean littoral and with the peoples of the desert - people who lived on dates and little water and traveled hundreds of miles to pillage or trade or tend their scrawny flocks. It is the Sahara which was for me the interest in this book. Don't look for Beau Geste. He wasn't there.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Brilliant, Alive.......2005-08-30

This book tells the good rollicking tale of the conquest and adminstration of the Sahara, the greatest waste of desert in the world. The Sahare was first explored and colonized, at some cost and expense in lives and money, in the late 19th century, mostly by a gorup of colorful fanatics. This book tells of the men who toiled in the Sahara before the conquest, of the slave caravans and the cruelty of the desert. This is a weaving togather of many great stories and it will make a good present or a good weekend read.

        Seth J. Frantzman

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to an Oft-Overlooked Portion of French Africa.......2005-06-25

While I wish there had been more on the bibliography/notes side of this book, I can say that it was nevertheless generally a very informative (and entertaining) work. In particular, I found it to be a good bridge between the French Maghrib, French Central and West Africa (regions that, though in many ways connected, are often dealt with seperately). The feel of the book follows the title, as it is essentially an adventure story (and rather light on colonial-imperial theory). This does not, however, detract anything from its depth, its details or history. As an overview, it serves its purpose well: There are aspects of biography of many of the major personalities, place descriptions to rival any tour book, and details on life in the Sahara which add much to gaining a fuller understanding of the subject. I found this book to be good enough to follow it up with Porch's Conquest of Morocco, which is a great companion to it. One thing I should point out, however, is that Porch mentions some oases that are not on the book's map (this happens in the Morocco book too), and this is a bit annoying, though not a large enough irritation to count as a real flaw. If a place is mentioned and the book has a map, then why leave it out? Still, the reading made up for this and I'd recommend it to anyone as a great introduction to this part of French Africa.

4 out of 5 stars The Land of the Tuareg .......2004-09-04

What a strange project it was for the French to try and subdue the Sahara; that notorious and terrific expanse of Northern Africa. As Porch skilfully explains, the Sahara is much more than the mere sandpit it appears to be in movies; its native inhabitants, the Tuareg, have long eked out an existence amidst its oases and scrubland. The movement to explore and civilize the Sahara was sponsored by the French Army; many of the expeditions proved disastrous, and more than one was led by madmen. The conquest created some truly romantic images, such as the camel brigades, and the system of Foreign Legion garrisons immortalized by Beau Geste. The units borne of the conquest - the "Saharians" - also fought with distinction in World War One.

5 out of 5 stars Why the French made a colony of the Sahara........2002-08-04

Another fine book by Professor Porch. If you liked his book on the Conquest of Morocco, then this book will also be a good read. The only criticism I have of this book is that he didn't place any pictures in it, like he had in the Morocco book. A more detailed map may also have helped.
I agree with the previous reviewer about the intentions of the French. Why conquer an enormous sandpit? The answer is the French government did not know, and relied on the glory seeking soldiers of the French Army. The soldiers were interested in the conquest and not the money and lives the government expended. Colonialism failed because it did not pay, and the French experience in the Sahara was a prime example. Also answered the question why Algeria has a larger share of the desert than her rivals Morocco and Tunisia. Only later when the French were fighting an independance war was oil in the Sahara found.
