Lack of architectural drafting & design details in metal stud framing..........2007-08-06
I was looking for a book to help me complete an architectural drawing for office partition wall framing with metal studs. I found this book is not written for readers who want to find details in architectural drafting and design of metal stud framing in order to comply with commercial building codes.
Classroom textbook use only.......2007-02-23
The author admits he wrote this book to assist with classroom teaching. As an additional explanation to a teacher explaining it, the book would be great. The problem is his explanations are hard to follow and the picture angles and lighting make it hard to see many of the details he refers to. I ended up skimming the book for good basic ideas. He obviously is very knowledgable in the field.
This book delivers.......2005-08-03
I am a general contractor that needed good and reliable information on metal framing. This book is well worth the money and has allowed me teach in house crews how to properly work with metal framing components. This book shows a variety of procedures and a lot of "tricks" of the trade. I can honestly say that this book will take you from zero knowledge to actually being able to frame a decent size job starting with proper layout and moving onto framing around obstacles and a variety of different things like headering doors and windows, framing soffits, framing for suspended drywall ceilings, furred walls, interior and exterior walls, etc.
This book has saved me hours of time right after I read it and started applying the information. My crews can cost me over $100/hr when they stand around trying to figure out something or have to redo work. Having them read this book before a job has saved hundreds of dollars and has produced a much better end product than we have had in the past.
If you are new to metal stud framing, you need this book.
Leaves a lot out........2005-04-14
I'm not sure who this book is written for. It has a lot of nice pictures, and some details about the more simple parts of framing with metal studs. But it leaves a lot out. Whenever anything gets complicated Mr. Clark says, "your foreman will tell you" what to do. He doesn't explain to the reader how to decide what will be wanted. That leaves out every reader who is a foreman level and above. It's not a book for builders, contractors, architects, designers, engineers, supervisors, or anyone wanting to convert from light frame wood construction to metal framing construction. For example, there are no structural calculation tables for bearing walls and no reference to where one might look to find structural calculation data for metal framing. One chapter talks about structural framing and mentions that the components are a heavier gauge than non-structural walls, but there is nothing to say how much heavier gauge is needed where, or how light of a gauge can be used in non-bearing walls either. There is nothing about how to select the gauge or type of material for particular applications. All of that kind of information is left to "your foreman will tell you."
And, it's not very good for the workman on the job either. My son bought my copy because he was out working on a commercial job where metal framing was required. By the time he had gotten around to buying the book after working a few days, he had learned just about everything he needed to know from other workers. It's not all that hard or complicated to bend down a few tabs. He gave the book to me saying that he found little or nothing he could use on the job. Yes, there are a few helpful hints here and there in this book, but overall it's a real disappointment whether you're a workman on the job or a supervisor wanting to know how to select material for the job. Maybe it could be used for a classroom teaching of beginner framers. They could get some good ideas before starting on the job site.
Not for neophytes.......2001-04-18
Despite the reviews and the suggestive title, this book will NOT provide a grounding in metal framing for those wishing to convert from traditional skills. Designers/architects will learn nothing regarding metal framing compared to wood framing. Little or nothing in the way of loading is provided. This book may have tips for seasoned experts but it certainly assumes that you come to the table with plenty of metal framing experience.
Book Description
Portraits not only capture a likeness, but offer for generations to come a glimpse into the subject's life. Sounds like quite a challenge. But with Ann Kullberg's help, it's not as difficult as one might think to create lifelike colored pencil portraits.
Using her own beautiful portraiture for instruction and inspiration, Kullberg walks artists through the process step by step--from basic information about materials and techniques to two demonstrations that show how complete portraits come together from beginning to end.
Readers will also find Kullberg's secrets for making their portrait come alive, along with 17 mini-demos that make it easy to paint realistic features, hair and clothing.

Colored Pencil Portraits: Step by Step.......2007-09-14
This book is equally useful for beginning colored pencil artists through more advanced portrait artists. It is a must read for beginners, as I am. Author Anita Kullberg begins with basic colored pencil techniques, composition and the all-important skills of using light, dark and mid tone values. Then, she leads the reader through the step-by-step techniques of painting skin tones, facial characteristics and realistic hair. By the time I painted my second portrait using Kullberg's techniques described in this book, my painting was believable and recognizable. Far more important to the amateur, I really liked my work! The book is indexed for an easy search for content and Kullberg's "Hints" are real gems. This is a great reference book in addition to the tutorials.
Best book on colored pencils ever!!!!.......2007-08-08
This book was spectacular. The author and artist is absolutely amazing. When I found the book I had no idea how to blend and make skin tone with colored pencil being a black and white pencil artist, but I was able to read her instructions and use them to make my first colored pencil portrait and it looked fantastic. If you are an aspiring portrait artist and you want to learn colored pencils, this is a book you can't do without!
Colored Pencil Portraits: Step By Step.......2007-07-31
This book got me started on colored pencil, it was my very first introduction to the medium. Ann Kullberg through her enthusiasm is incredibly motivating- with carefully thought out step by step techniques and beautiful paintings to show you exactly how she achieved each effect. She goes through every process of creating a portrait in colored pencil starting from a blank page- learning the tools; to composition; right up to the business of selling your work. Ann is also very humble and took the time to answer all of my questions personally when I wrote her a letter. It was because of this and the great joy I got from working through her lessons I went to one of her workshops. She is a patient teacher who will not hesitate to help another-sharing all of her secrets. Ann Kulberg is of great strong moral character and a master of her trade. I would recommend any product she has created.
Colored Pencil Portraits: Step-By-Step .......2007-05-14
This is a wonderful book. It is very informative if you want to learn to work with colored pencils. I recommend it to any bidding artist!
If you can attend her workshop-do it!!!.......2007-04-17
I just attended her portrait workshop for 3 days & can tell you that this gal is the real deal! She's genuinely gifted & has such a wonderful & bubbly personality! I had attended a workshop 2 yrs. ago from a different cp artist & vowed not to go to any more until I decided to go to Ann's (whose workshop I wished I could've took in 2005 instead of Arlene's). This book will help you so much!! I am used to doing colored pencil with the scumbling method which takes forever!! Ann has developed the most amazingly easy technique that is so much faster & looks just as good if not better!! I think the only bad reviews must be by her ex! Ha! I want to attend the 2nd workshop someday that goes with her 2nd book. I have her CDs that go with her books & CDs of her online magazine for colored pencil. All are so helpful!! Her method & books will help even the worst of artists I believe! Thank you Ann for all of your help!!

BAD CHOICE!.......2007-02-13
This is a poor excuse for a book! It has a couple of pages of [...] "how to draw a head" instructions. The rest of the book is just sketches of portraits. You could get a MUCH better book than this to learn portrait drawing. Save your money! I sent mine back for a refund!
Customer Reviews:
Good beginner lighting book.......2007-09-10
I liked this book. It has some out dated looking pictures but i felt it helped a lot to get started. They have a lot of easy lighting set ups explained. Like "glamour" lighting and exactly where to place the lights. The other drawback though was it's definately before the digital age of cameras and I think he used hot light(lights that don't flash). But still good if you are a beginner and just need some set up to try and get a feel for everything.
A Steady Light.......2007-05-26
John Hart began as a painter, and goes about his photography slowly and thoughtfully. He prefers continuous light because it facilitates that pace. You get a good grasp of his careful approach in this book.
The book can be a gold mine for someone just starting out in portrait photography. Hart gives you the setups that will allow you to deliver solidly professional results.
The section on outdoor shooting doesn't add to what most beginning photographers already know, but the section on studio work is invaluable. Hart doesn't hold back any "secrets"; he generously explains what he has learned over many years. He has always been one of the most popular photographers for actors in New York, and this book can start you toward that kind of career.
I strongly recommend it, and I can't imagine how someone could find it dated.
Not Worth Buying.......2005-11-21
This is an older book (copyright 1995) but is frequently still available. In fact, you've probably seen this book at your local camera store's book aisle.
Hart's book is an ok resource on studio lighting, and I've found techniques here that I haven't seen elsewhere. Especially nice is the section on makeup techniques for both men and women.
Still, this book has not aged well and you'd do better with other studio lighting books, like Ketchum's and Dantzig's. Consider this comment:
"You will notice that most of the techniques shown here are accomplished using lights rather than strobe units. Though strobe portraits are perfectly acceptable for personal and commercial use today, the art of portrait lighting is still best learned and assimilated through working with lights. Many subjects prefer working under hot, bright lights (!), as it helps draw out their innate "star quality."
One wonders what Hart's sample size was to draw that conclusion?
What I like about this book:
1) Very good lighting diagrams... showing not only the placement of lights, but their distance from the subject as well.
2) A wide variety of lighting challenges, including for example, "Lighting the 'Wet' Look" and "Photographing Hats"
3) Relatively small amount of filler.
What I don't like about this book:
1) Those wonderful lighting diagrams? They show things like 150 watt spotlights (remember Hart thinks models PREFER hot lights), making it difficult to convert to modern strobe settings.
2) Many of the models here aren't very attractive. I know that shouldn't matter but it does distract from the text of the book. If you want to know how to photograph 45 year old overweight real estate agents, this is your book.
3) The book hasn't aged well, as mentioned above. This is a book BEGGING for a revised edition. Opps... this IS the revised edition. Make that this is a book begging for a revised, revised edition.
Not worth buying, IMHO.
50 Portrait Lighting Techniques.......2005-08-22
Being new to portrait work I found this book to be an amazing resource. The images are exciting, bright, colorful . It is a great way to learn about lighting as you can see where you are directing light. You can buy a couple of hot lights and reflectors and start creating vivid portraits taking inspiration from the diagrams and images. It is not meant to be copied. Keep the positions and intensities of lights in your mind and apply them to your own subjects in your way. My work has impoved. Thanks for sharing John
5 not 50.......2003-09-28
There are some useful examples in this book, however there are certainly not 50! Many of the lighting setups shown are so similar it's hard to see any difference from one to the next. Most of the older b & w examples seem dangerously overexposed, again making each 'technique' undistinguishable. Some of the newer colour examples are quite out-of-focus which really doesn't help matters. I see this book more of a 'what not to do' guide. He manages to make one of the models look great in one shot, but gross in the next, and so forth. There are definately more useful, more up-to-date books that give better examples than this title.

Spock of the Future!.......2000-08-29
Finally, the definitive book for expecting fathers! Here Mr. Dunton combines the sensitivity of Spock with the writing talent of a modern Fitzgerald. I've read alot of baby books, but this one is the best. I recommend it to all Dads and Moms.
Thank You, Mr. Dunton!.......1999-05-14
Excellent, excellent, excellent! This is by far the best book available on this subject. A friend of my wife quietly slipped me a copy a few weeks back and I couldn't be more grateful. I've since bought several copies to hand out to all my "expecting" pals. I (and my wife) look forward to more from Mr. Dunton in the future.
Required reading --course 101-- for all expectant fathers........1999-04-07
Most fathers-to-be have no idea of the changes taking place in the bodies of their wives other than what they have read in pamphlets about pregnancy.Even the most self-reliant woman needs babying while she is herself "babying".
Insightful and.......1999-03-23
I found this book fun and insightful. Any Dads or partners to be can learn from this no nonsense guide to helping and supporting the woman in your life who is pregnant. The illustrations are delightful. It's really a must have for the guy who wants to help his pregnant wife, but doesn't quite know where to start. It should be called "the boyfriend's guide to pregnancy".

Book Description
The Youngest Brother is a firstÂ-person account by the youngest of five children born to a prosperous Kansas wheat farmer during the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression. This is a family's struggle to preserve their relationships and maintain the farm after the father became seriously crippled when the author was just a toddler.
The Youngest Brother is entertaining and contains a touch of humor. It describes life as it was in the "the good old days" when considerably more than half of all Americans lived on farms. The Youngest Brother describes in detail the amenities of the day, but challenges you to make modern comparisons. The events are not chronological since many overlap, yet in general, they follow a historical sequence.
Book Description
No single human invention has transformed war more than the airplanenot even the atomic bomb. Even before the Wright Brothers' first flight, predictions abounded of the devastating and terrible consequences this new invention would have as an engine of war. Soaring over the battlefield, the airplane became an unstoppable force that left no spot on earth safe from attack. Drawing on combat memoirs, letters, diaries, archival records, museum collections, and eyewitness accounts by the men who foughtand the men who developed the breakthrough inventions and conceptsacclaimed author Stephen Budiansky weaves a vivid and dramatic account of the airplane's revolutionary transformation of modern warfare.
Customer Reviews:
"Revolutions in Military Affairs" in the Sky.......2007-01-14
I'm always a little wary of long history books written by journalists, who sometimes present history as a tedious interview of various "sources." Stephen Budiansky, a correspondent for the Atlantic Monthly, is a happy exception to the rule. His prose is clear and crisp, and he tells an engaging story in a way that kept drawing me back to his rather hefty "Air Power."
Budiansky begins his book by explaining why the accomplishments of the Wright Brothers were so remarkable. He then renders a detailed history of the military uses, both real and imagined, of aircraft. The result is a story of a rapidly emerging technology told against the background of the military theories of the 20th and early 21st century.
Throughout his book, Budiansky takes issue with the views of theorists and generals who claimed that air power could be a "war-winning" weapon, either because it could be used to terrorize civilian populations into surrender or because it could cause rapid economic collapse by striking at the chokepoints in an enemy's supply system. The author argues that, with very few exceptions (such as the interdiction of German oil supplies in the last year of World War II), air power has not performed very well as a strategic tool and has always been far more effective when used as a tactical weapon in support of forces on the ground. In this sense, the Second Gulf War in Iraq can be viewed as the apotheosis of the effective use of air power: with the advent of readily available precision weapons, even "strategic" aircraft such as the B-1, B-2 and B-52 bombers have been used to great advantage in the role of close support of ground troops.
In the aftermath of the opening phases of the Second Gulf War, air power is for the moment ascendant on the battle field. But if there is anything to be learned from Budiansky's meticulous history, it is that military innovation is a very Darwinian business. Plenty of bright people are studying the successful American and British invasion of Iraq, trying to make sure that the air power strategy used in that conflict will work just as well in the next war--or, for those worried about being on the receiving end, trying to prevent that strategy from working at all.
Technology, politics and ideas.......2006-10-23
This book does an excellent job of providing real perspective on the development and application of air power from World War I to Iraq. The author shows how changes in technology interacted with politics and inter-service rivalries in the military to produce both successes and failures in the use of aircraft as weapons.
The author is no cheerleader for any one point of view. He is in fact severely critical of the doctrine of precision strategic bombing as it evolved from World War I through the Cold War. If you ever wondered how bombers thousands of feet in the air could accurately hit targets like bridges and factories - the answer is that they couldn't, until very recently. It is fascinating to see why and how various air forces held to the doctrine of precision strategic bombing in the face of strong evidence of its ineffectiveness and the massive "collateral damage" inflicted on civiilians.
One quible about the book is that it focuses almost entirely on the American and British air forces, with only occasional discussions of the German and French equivalents. This is a minor issue, however, because there is more than enough interesting material.
Air Power gives you a complete and well-rounded picture of how many different factors have interacted to determine the evolution of military aircraft, and how they have been used with greater or lesser success.
