Wonderfully Educational.......2007-05-14
This book is wonderfully educational. It takes you back to the beginning of furniture and walks you through the centuries providing you with the intial inspiration through Modern design. Great pictures too.
Waste of time and MONEY!.......2006-07-09
Based on the reviews of this book I decided to buy it! To my absolute shock, I dont understand who wrote these great reviews??? They were probably written by the publisher or author of this book.
What a waste of time and money. Being a designer myself, i ve got every possible book on interior design, and furniture styles that are out on the market. Based on the price of this book, and good reveiws, I figured it would be a great addition to my collection of books and references. Its poorly printed, very bad paper quality, no detailed shots of the furniture pieces, and not worth the price whatsoever. I mean if the publisher is charging this price, then the least they could do is print it on good paper and have clearer pictures.
I am extremely dissapointed and returning the book asap.
If u enjoy throwing your money away on a small book with poorly printed pictures(aside from the info, which is fine)then this is the book to buy . But if you are looking for details of furniture, including the background and history, and worth every penny, then i suggest you buy (Furniture: World Styles From Classical to Contemporary by Judith Miller )
Good Guide.......2006-02-08
I was not impressed when I received this book, with the quality of the paper or the overall presentation. I thought some of the photography left much to be desired quality-wise. However, it is quite a comprehensive book and I leaned on it considerably in my studies of furniture and design. So don't let me put you off. I just think that, with all the research and hard work involved, and considering the price, a better quality might have been forthcoming.
Like Cliff Notes for Furniture!.......2005-08-10
This book has brief history lessons on furniture from the begining of time! It's a great reference when you need an answer about a design period- quick! A must for every Interior Designer!
Excellent Reference - Nice Job!.......2003-01-19
I found the book to be a good overall reference and extremely
useful in explaining period furniture to my design clients. I would like to have seen more coverage of Mid-century Modern, especially the work of Edward Wormley and DUNBAR.
Definitely worth the money - should be all designers reference
libraries...

A Masterful Book.......2007-09-18
I am a figurative painter, illustrator, and part time university instructor who owns two copies of this outstanding book: one for personal use and one as a supplement to teaching.
There are very few books available on drawing the clothed figure, and fewer that are useful. This book is a must have for anyone who is a serious beginner or professional figurative artist.
It is filled from cover to cover with clearly written text, outstanding drawings and diagrams, and valuable information and insight. Part 1 in the book covers the oft overlooked imperative issues of stance and holding the medium, direct drawing, telling a story, drawing in a sketchbook and drawing in your studio. Parts 2, 3, 4, and 5 progress in a logical way through valuable information on the figure and clothing, including: clear information on how body forms and clothing wrap around, folds including their types and how they move with the form and action of the body, fabric types and textures, patterns, and how to construct clothing on the body, plus pages on drawing hats and footwear. Part 6 includes information on design of the figure in clothing, drawing heads, hands, and children.
Barbara Bradley's mastery of subject, joyful spirit, and understanding of how we think and feel moves this far beyond being a simple "How To" book. This book is about drawing the clothed figure, but it is also about expressing an opinion and portraying a living human being.
An award-winning teacher's generous legacy.......2007-06-02
Earlier this year, Barbara Bradley was selected by a jury of 75 illustrators, art directors and educators to receive the New York Society of Illustrators' 2007 Distinguished Educator of the Arts Award. "Drawing People: How to Portray the Clothed Figure" is an organized, comprehensive collection of the lessons this outstanding teacher and former illustration department director distilled from 25 years of teaching clothed figure drawing at San Francisco's Academy of Art University. The breadth of Bradley's knowledge and understanding of drawing made this an ambitious undertaking. The result is a book densely packed with key concepts and tips for producing believable, expressive, well-drawn figures.
It is unfortunate that two of the recently posted reviews here are so bafflingly critical--especially since one is written by someone who admits he lacks the skill to draw clothed figures himself. As a working illustrator for over 20 years (Domitila: A Cinderella Tale from the Mexican Tradition, The Wishing Tree, Water Beds: Sleeping In The Ocean, Octavia And Her Purple Ink Cloud, The Rainforest Grew All Around), let me assure you that "Drawing People" is a valuable resource both for beginning artists as well as for more advanced, life-long students. Contrary to the title of my review, the inspiration and skills Barbara Bradley passed on to her many students is her real legacy. Her clothed figure drawing book is a bonus--a gift to those not fortunate enough to have experienced her teaching first-hand.
Must Have For Drapery Studies.......2007-05-25
I just finished my first year of art school and picked up this book to give me some more practice over the summer. Have a background that includes nude figure drawings first before delving into this one. But if you are ready to delve into drapery, this book is a godsend. Not many books deal with clothing studies, and she offers good tips for creating drawings using both value and line.
Not what it says.......2007-04-22
This book is not so much about depicting clothing but discussing figure drawing and depicting folds in clothing. It doesn't do what it sets out to do. For it to do that, ti would have actually had to explain more abotu how clothing wraps around the body. Understanding the figure is a must in depicting clothing, as cloth twists and moves to the contortions of the body. This was not discussed in the book. Soem real life examples would have wokred wonders toward achieving it's aim. The book can also be a bit wordy. It could have been made concise if they had used a greater amount of photos and clearer graphics.
With that being said, I still enjoyed this book. Even thoguh it didn't quite delve deeply into process some of the suggestions were reasonably helpful. I liked the rough figure sketches she includes. These are great examples of how to capture form. Also, her interest in telling a story and explanations as to her choices in for depicting mood were very interesting to me. I would like to get into illustrative work. So those msall points on telling a story. It a very kind of open beginners book to pencil drawing the human figure. Other mediums are ignored. Still, i like the art, and even though I took the book out from my local library. I'
m thinking of buying myself a copy.
My advice, Buy it from the bookstore, if oyu don't like it, return it.
There really should be a half a star sign, this book isn't quiet a four but it isn't a three either.
A Disappointment to Say the Least.......2007-02-02
As I sat here writting this review my rating dropped from a three star rating to a two star rating, and I now realize that all of my malice and discontent could have easily been diverted if the book were titled "Drawing People: A Technical Guide for Beginners" and mentioned nary a word about the clothed figure. Then if I had of stumbled upon this book it would have been an added bonus that the author took the time to outline some basics on clothing and drappery, instead of a full out disappointment. Not that I blame the author solely, most of the blame lies at my door. I was so overjoyed in finding a book that proclaimed it was specifically about drawing the clothed figure, Brune Hogath's book aside (another devastating disappointment), and that it was written by a professor from the Academy of Art, a school that I am still deciding on attending, that instead of going my normal route (ordering the book through the store, checking it out in person, and then ordering it online so I could get a fatty discount) I impulsively bought the book, only reading the book synopsis and barely glancing over the customer reviews (which all looked favorable). Now I realise my folly, and am yet determining whether I'll pay for it (i.e. keep the book).
I guess what all of my harping boils down to is the lack of content instead of the quality, for I can easily discern Bradley is an excellent artist with years of knowledge garnered from experience, and I'd say that experience shows equally in all areas, not just clothing but in setting up a composition and following through. The problem is, at least in my opinion, that this book is supposed to specifically address clothing, and it doesn't for the most part. Roughly one fourth of the book pertains to clothing, the other three fourths talk about:
how to properly hold your drawing implement, how to properly position yourself if you are drawing from a live modle, maintaing a daily sketchbook, researching your subject matter, the relationships between the head neck and shoulders, drawing hands, drawing feet, drawing eyes, and a whole slew of other. . .I wouldn't say irrelavent, because they are relavent, but not neccessarily the most important topics pertaining to drawing the clothed figure.
A refernce guide on clothing should discuss a plethora of clothing materials, and Bradley does on one page with chicken scratch detailing. It should outline some of the rules when dealing with how clothes tend to fit people of varying body tips, again something Bradley discusses on one single page. The differnce between water logged clothing and dry clothing, she didn't bother mentioning that. How pants typically bunch up while you're walking seen from the head on, profile, three quaters, and back view, another topic she failed to mention. Some examples of evening/ formal attire vs. day clothes, how clothing reacts when the subject is in motion, how jackets restrain your actions and bunch up, the effect of wearing multiple layers at once, achieving that perfect windswept look, and all manner of other topics that should appear in an artistic clothing refernce guide.
Maybe I'm being too harsh on Bradley, after all she does mention in her preface that there aren't a whole lot of books pertain to drawing the clothed figure, and compared to the standard "how to. . ." books she's leaps and bounds ahead of the rest. Oh yeah, that's another thing, she doesn't outline any steps on how to achieve a realistic rendering like- first start out with a cone pointing upward then draw a sphere at the bottom/base. The sphere represents the weight of the gathered cloth so the stress lines originate from the tip of the cone and travel down the length eventually enveloping the sphere. Note the ripples. -or some junk like that. Back to me not being to harsh on Bradley, I guess in reading she is/was a professor in the arts I thought she would have some understanding of the common impediments modern day artist face when depicting clothing.
For all who have read this drawn out rant, two maybe three people, and think I'm all talk, trust me if I had the skills I'd come up with my own series of "How to draw. . ." books and address all of my issues. As is I'm pretty good at drawing dynamic figures, but the second I add clothing they become flat, lifeless caricatures and I don't see this book as alleviating my shortcomings much. As is my own artistic habits (drawing from magazines, online pics, and occasionally stepping outside of my cave to draw people in motion) are a match for the few helpful hints in this book. You're better off doing what you've always done plus artistically drapping to a wall or over a piece of furniture from time to time then buying this book.
If you do know of a book that addresses even half of the afore mentioned topics, if you could write a review mentioning them, somehow recommend them to me or whatever I'd be eternally in your debt.
Book Description
Description: Dune collects, for the first time, the sand dune photographs of both Edward and Brett Weston, two giant names in modern photography. Previously, their remarkable dune photographs--dramatic abstractions of light and shadow and sensuous shape--were featured as samples in overview publications on the artists, just a picture here and there. This lush volume brings together father and son in a personal, unique fashion, showcasing the photographs each made in the same locations. Adding depth is an original essay by Brett Weston's longtime friend, traveling companion and biographer, John Charles Woods. Woods' intimate, forthcoming narrative describes what it was like to accompany the younger Weston into the dunes and what his habits and personality were like. Charis Wilson, Edward Weston's one-time wife, excerpts a passage from her acclaimed book Through Another Lens, in which she tells of a 1936 trip she and her husband made to the dunes of Oceano, California. Also included are correspondence between father and son, and excerpts from Edward Weston's daybooks.

Super, but not perfect..........2007-05-22
Lovely book with satin pages. Material a little samey in some respects but interesting (slight) contrast in styles neatly illustrated. Minimalist, a little text but I am glad I own it. Not a knockout, but enjoyable and a pleasure to own. Certainly opened my eyes and will be a valued part of my collection.
Magnificent Book!.......2004-02-07
Without doubt one of the most magnificent books related to photography ever published. The Westston's photgraphs are out of and well beyong the realm of "pictures" -- the treatment of the photographs and Kust Markus' text and treatment of the Weston's works reverantly rings true and honest, no pretentious drivel here!
Outstanding.......2003-08-28
What a terrific book on the 2 great masters of 20th century photography. A joy to read and the reproductions of the Dunes are some of the best I have seen in any book on EW or BW. Highly recommended for the collector of Westons and others. A real treasure and I keep on opening it to view such beautiful images.

Book Description
From the moment they are born, children experience an unfortunate value system that reserves respect and esteem for a select few. Those who fail to measure up end up resigning themselves to a lifetime of feeling inadequate and inferior. Over the past twenty-five years, more than a million parents and teachers have benefited from Dr. James Dobson's insightful counsel in his classic Hide and Seek. Now revised and updated, and in paperback, this book provides a new generation of parents with practical pointers for raising self-confident, healthy children.
Customer Reviews:
a very interesting read ...........2006-08-04
The book starts with a somewhat surprising beginning which grabbed my attention early. After that, the first couple of chapters talk about the importance of confidence and how it can be eroded over time. After Chapter 3, the book picks up and gives some interesting insight into building confidence. There were some religious references that I could do without. Other then that this book is a must read if you have children.
Self Esteem.......2006-02-27
Excellent Book, one every parent and/or parent-to-be should read! Timely delivery and in excellent condition!
One of the best child-rearing books available.......2003-10-16
Dr. Dobson does an excellent job of getting across the basics of child psychology and how they relate to self-esteem, without either talking over the readers' heads or talking down to them. He describes some of the ways that parents can untentionally weaken their children's self-esteem and many ways to prevent or remedy that situation, ultimately giving the child a self-image that is based on inherent worth rather than abilities, attractiveness, possessions or performance. This book is highly recommended to anyone who is disappointed in the prevailing current views on how to build a child's self-esteem, and wants to try a better way--God's way.

Customer Reviews:
Not just for parents.......2001-06-02
I was required recently to read this book for a youth ministry class I'm taking to prepare me for an internship. While the book is geared towards parents of younger children, much of the same material may be applied to youth ministry. Also, I find that much of it SHOULD be applied in my own daily life. This book offers great insight into how children develope and I would encourage everyone to read, no matter what your situation is.
Biblical vision and values for our children.......1999-10-18
ENOUGH of this "passive parenting" many adults hold so dear to their hearts! This book holds strong and solid advice for parents to be a formative part of their child's life by exercising love, understanding, and discipline. It is an incredible book and an easy two-day read. Isaiah 54:13 conveys the ultimate goal and message of this book, "All thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children". It reaffirmed for me biblical values for raising my child to please the Lord by preserving the delicate spirit within. You will absolutely fall in love with this book and begin your search for the next Dr. Dobson book...as I am!
A great preview into building your childs self esteem!.......1999-06-22
Upon strong recommendation from my cousin I read Hide or Seek. I have read many books on raising children as I aspire to be the best parent that I possibly can. I have found that James Dobson more consistantly finds the balance between loving your children and teaching your children hands down to other literature that is available. He has helped me to trust in my own capability and knowledge and develop a system that works for "our" family. There are so many paths that we as parents have to speculate about. Dobson helps to high-light a path that nurtures your childs spirit while developing a deep sense of respect for themselves as well as others.
A Lyrical Dialectic from the Master of Discipline.......1999-04-24
James Dobson, fundamentalist qua child psychologist, has done it again with this wonderful textually self-referential dialectic on child "rearing."
Dobson, who's earlier work has inspired us to spank our children, really hits the mark with his proverbial cat o' nine-tails here. Gone is the winsome, friendly Dobson- replaced by a ruthless Dobson seeking to enhance "self-esteem" through the either/or of "hide and seek."
Skillfully blending a poetic sense of kinder-angst with the ethic of the ubermensch, Dobson clearly establishes a nexus of wunderkind endlossung, with a result that is sure to elicit more than a few belly laughs.

Book Description
An explanation of the failure of the Communist insurgency in Greece between 1945 and 1949, this study provides a striking lesson in what happens to an armed revolutionary movement when it lacks adequate manpower and logistical resources, and is divided against itself on such basic matters as foreign policy and the employment of its military capabilities. During the period of 1945-1949, the Greek Communist Party was split into competing factions, each with its own idea of which course the rebellion should take. The Stalinist faction, led by Secretary-General Nikos Zachariades, was pitted against the more pragmatic nationalist wing led by the commander of the Greek Democratic Army, Markos Vafiades. Shrader provides a detailed examination of the logistical aspects of the war, particularly the impact of political decisions and the aid provided to the Greek Communists by outside supporters on logistics and operations. At each successive stage of the conflict, Zachariades outmaneuvered his rivals and imposed policies that both reduced the resources available to the Communist-led insurgents and sought to turn an effective guerrilla force into a conventional army employing conventional operational methods. The decisions taken by the Greek Communist Party under Zachariades' leadership alienated both the domestic supporters of the Communist rebellion and its key external supporters, such as Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia. Ultimately, the conventionally organized Greek Democratic Army proved unable to sustain itself logistically, and it was defeated in August 1949 by the constantly improving Greek National forces aided by the United States.

Book Description
Verhulst examines fifteen towns, mainly situated on the rivers Meuse and Scheldt and along the North Sea coast of present day Belgium, Holland and France. He details the impact of political, military, ecclesiastical, economic and social factors on the development of towns from market towns to industrial centers. Arranged chronologically, the book charts the settlement and subsequent growth of the towns from the fourth to the twelfth centuries. Well illustrated with maps and with a full bibliography, this book will prove essential reading for students and scholars of historical and urban geography.
Download Description
For more than fifty years no synthesis has been written which systematically examines the growth and development of cities in north-west Europe. Adriaan Verhulst takes as his subject the history of urban settlements and towns in the region between the rivers Somme and Meuse from the late Roman period (fourth century) to the end of the twelfth century. This region comprises Flanders and LiËge, two of the most urbanized areas, not only in the southern Netherlands but in northwestern Europe as a whole until the twelfth century. Fifteen towns are studied in all, and, supported by numerous maps, Professor Verhulst provides rich details of the impact of political, military, ecclesiastical, as well as social and economic, factors on the developing towns as they were transformed from regional markets to centres of industry and international commerce.

Customer Reviews:
only conversion reference you will ever need.......2001-07-14
Tired of looking through books to find the correct conversion factor to another unit? Well, so was I. Since I deal with international engineering contracts, this book saves a great deal of time. It is extremely well formatted and easy to use. This book not only has the usual units, but also Japanese, and ancient systems as well. You won't need any other book - ever. The author challenges you to find a unit not listed, and send it to him for inclusion in the next edition. That alone should give you an idea of how thorough it is! This is a must for any technical field. Well organized, and well worth the price of the book. A real bargin. Also, fun to read. It gives the approved units for various systems, and states which ones are on the phase-out. Good to know if you are doing technical writing, and need to keep your units within the standards listed.

Book Description
The general purpose of this handbook is to prepare scientists, engineers, and technicians of the U.S. Army Materiel Development and Readiness Command (DARCOM) for increasing use of the International Systems of Units (SI) or, as it is frequently referred to, the "metric system." The specific objectives are to give DARCOM personnel (1) the tools required to convert the units of physical quantities and equations to SI units, (2) the information needed to correctly interpret specifications and documentation using the SI, and (3) the information needed to generate specifications and prepared documentation in SI units.
Chapter 1 presents a paragraph outline of the handbook to facilitate its use, and a brief history of the introduction of and increasing use of the SI in the US. Definitions, rules, and conventions fundamental to the SI and its use are to be found in Chapters 2 and 3.
Methods for converting non-SI units to SI units are given in Chapter 4. The methods make use of "unit equalities" and, if applied rigorously, will minimize or eliminate errors in unit conversions. A relatively simple method is presented for modifying equations such that equations derived for use with non-SI units can be used with SI units.
Tables of unit equalities, experimentally determined constants expressed in SI units, and dimensionless quantities are given in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 is concerned with the use of SI in military engineering drawings, and covers dual dimensioning and conversion of the units of dimensions. Sample calculations illustrating methods of converting units and modifying equations are given in Chapter 7.

Book Description
Metric Units and Conversion Charts A Metrication Handbook for Engineers, Technologists, and Scientists Second Edition Why waste your valuable time hunting for conversion factors, symbols, and units? With this handbook, you can convert from one measurement system to any other by means of 62 conversion charts covering almost every field of science. The charts are based on values published by the foremost authoritative sources such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE). The charts are universal, and so conversions can be made quickly and confidently. This much-expanded second edition has the following features:
* The charts make a clear distinction between SI and other metric units by identifying SI units by red boxes.
* Official symbols of all SI units are given, along with the name of the unit.
* The recommended symbols for quantities are shown at the top of each chart.
* A new chapter on mass, force and gravity explains how the units of force were established.
* For introductory courses, chapters are included explaining quantity equations and numerical equations, together with worked-out examples.
* For classroom work, over 100 review questions, together with answers.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Handy.......2003-05-24
Handy and interesting book for Engineers of all disciplines. Although one can find resources on the web for free that do the same thing, the book is sometimes better because it shows the step by step conversion process in a way that allows a person to be more confident than a "black box" number.
