I bought this book and another book because I wanted to paint a floor cloth rather than pay $1000 for one from a gallery.
Instuctions were great...told me the correct materials to buy and I painted a beautiful floor cloth...that I designed
I would have given it five stars but I don't think one can paint a quality floor cloth in a day and why would you want to.

This book is concise and straight to the point. If you are looking for information on how to sew curtains and placemats you will not find it here. If you want to do serious boat canvas work you should have this book in your library.

Ancient Marks contains absolutely stunning photography. It was great to see some rock markings from Western Aus. This book delievered way more than i expected. It is so beautiful i was wasnt sure how to turn the pages without touching them and getting marks all over them. I was absolutely blown away at the quality

Another Masterpiece.......2007-05-13
This is truly a wonderful book. Rainier's other book, "Where Masks Still Dance: New Guinea" was fabulous in its presentation and images, but this book goes one better with a dvd enhanced with music by Anoushka Shankar which can be viewed on its own. The music perfectly complements the starkness of the haunting images. Tattoos,scarification, and other bodily modifications of many cultures are showcased here without calling unecessary attention to these adornments as bizarre/freakish as in some other books which are designed to shock/titillate.

Awesome book by a great photographer.......2007-01-26
I bought this book as a gift for my girlfriend but stole it back. It isn't all about tattoos, which it may lead you to believe, but includes bits about all types of body modification techniques. The photographer is a well known National Geographic photographer, and his work certainly doesn't fail here. Good coffee table book if you have stuck up inlaws like I do that would be made uncomfortable by the sight of it.

The subtletly and artistry of this book is apparent from the very first turn of a page. Chris Ranier, one of the world's foremost documentary photographers, has created a artful, evocative record of the human canvass posed against the natural landscape. The photographs focus mostly on tattoing and scarification, and are oriented toward the tribal, both traditional and modern. This is an essential addition to any body art library, and at less than $30, the paperback version (which also includes a DVD) is a real bargain. I cannot recommend this enough.

The art was beautiful... couldn't say the same for the story.......1998-07-10
Like most people who couldn't read Japanese, I got the English translation of Crying Freeman. The first book of the series, Portrait of a Killer was promising in that the story was sort of believable. A Taste of Revenge follows up on two minor characters from the first book. Being the enemies of Freeman, both Kimie Hanada and Det. Nitta wanted revenge. How the story finally turned out was a surprise. Mixed into the revenge story was a plot of a certain cult to take over Japan. Compared to Portrait of a Killer, this story was mildly preposterous. As usual, the hero was practically invincible, and sexy. And I'll leave it at that. The artwork was beautiful as usual.
Beautifully illustlated story of violence and love.......1998-02-04
Ryoichi Ikegami, a Japanese Gekiga illustrator known his fluent and sexy paintings. Men and women he paints are beautiful, realistic and sexy. I love them! A young and promising Japanese ceramist is kidnapped by HongKong mafia and made up to be an assassin. After the long and tough training, he becomes an expert assassin and the leader of the family. Once he was seen his killing by a Japanese woman and try to kill her, but they fall in love and get married. This story is about the adventure of violence and love. Sometimes Ikegami's works go too far to the extent of losing its realism, but in this series, well maintained.

The Perfect Gift for the Acid Casualty on yer Shopping List.......2004-12-07
This is an excellent, well-written book. It provides a probing first-person look at some of the great acid heroes of the sixties; Leary, Kesey, Ginsberg, Thompson, etc. My only criticism is that even though the author has a somewhat critical eye towards the foibles of these Great Men, and gets in a few zingers at their expense, theres nonetheless a slightly fawning tone, partiularly towards Timothy Leary, surely one of the most dispicable figures to rise from the dregs of the 60s. The Age.......2000-10-13
Happened upon this nifty book in the counterculture section of my local bookstore and bought two copies.
The author takes us on a spirited, insightful sojourn through the backalleys of America's true icons and offers up zillions of interesting sidetracks along the way.
He doesn't mince too many words when disclosing the nitty gritty opinions that each of the protagonists has of one another - this makes for a more interesting read than many works which simply glorify all their subjects.
Additionally, somehow the author has an uncanny finger on the pulse of what we really want to hear about on the way, such as the piece on James Dean - his significance and his death. The section on Hunter S. Thompson is a riot!!!
This is a nice addition to your psychedelic editions.

God is Still my Co-pilot was first eluded to in the introduction to God is my Co-pilot, back in '42, and finally made it to press in 67.This book was dedicated to Gen Scott's mother, who was the source of his drive and determination to make something of himself and of his life. He has suceeded in more than a million ways, obviously! This book is very good reading and details Gen Scott's life in the 50s and early 60s, when this country was outdone by russia in the space race and when our politicians got us into a war we couldnt possibly when. Gen Scott lets the reader know exactly what he thinks in a lot of politically "incorrect" areas, which we can do today, but in 67 it was strictly taboo, preventing him from getting the book published in the traditional manner, subsequently having to get patrons involved. We have Robert "Strange" Mcnamara to thank, the Secretary of Defense at the time. This is a very good book and i recommend it highly to anybody ! interested!
