Book Description
Using the latest in paper engineering, this book brings to life six of Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous buildings. Includes the Robie House in Chicago, the Charles Ennis House, Fallingwater, the Johnson's Wax administrative building and research tower, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art.
Customer Reviews:
A brief comment.......2007-08-30
Despite the earlier, very negative review by Dominic, I agree with George&M's positive review, and found this book quite enjoyable, interesting, and readable.
First of all, Dominic is wrong when he says the pop ups don't actually "pop up." The model of the Johnson Wax building actually rises up a good six inches, maybe more off the paper, hardly anything close to what he describes. Most don't go that far, but are still very enjoyable to watch how they work as you open up the book, and to look at.
And as for the fragile binding and poor book quality he cites, well, welcome to the real world of commercial publishing of art and architecture books, which has been going downhill for probably the last 20 years, as publishers struggle to maintain profitability in the face of an American public that cares little for art and architectural education. Dominic also doesn't discuss the written text, which, for a book that looks like it's designed more to entertain rather than to educate, is well done, with detailed histories of the six buildings in the book, and comments by Wright himself about how he designed the project.
Even if you don't buy it, if you're a fan of Wright's, you should at least seek it out for the sheer fun of watching the paper pop-ups of Wright's buildings. The book discusses six of Wright's most notable buildings, such as the Johnson Wax building, Fallingwater, and the Mayan style house in L.A. (unfortunately I don't recall the name of the owners). The choices of buildings are a good selection to represent the full diversity of Wright's work, which ranged from personal residences to major corporate complexes. Overall, this is an interesting and fun and informative book on Wright that should be of interest to any Wright afficionados or fans of pop-up books (the most fun books after all--check out the Kama Sutra one I saw once some time. :-)).
Bought as a Gift - Very cool book.......2007-03-08
I bought this gift for my boyfriend who loves Wright's work. The pop-ups are really amazing. They captured several of the Frank Lloyd Wright structures perfectly. The book also has a lot of good information about the architect.
Fun book.......2007-02-27
Not a serious architecture book by any means, but it is neat to look at and keep on your coffee table. Other reviewers seem to take it too seriously (and maybe themselves also).
for a gift.......2007-01-10
this was purchased as a gift for my niece. she is showing an interest in architecture
Best Gift Ever!.......2007-01-10
My brother-in-law simply LOVES Frank Lloyd Wright, and as an architechtual engineering student he LOVED this book.
Book Description
Virtual Pose 2 is the second installment in what is fast becoming the ultimate visual reference series for drawing the human figure. For professional and student artists, this series is the next best thing to working with a live model--and the ultimate for amateur artists who have no access to studio sessions.
Each volume includes an interactive CD-ROM with 54 full-figure poses which the artist can rotate 360 degrees. The artist is also able to zoom in on the pose, thus presenting the human form in a way that allows a deeper understanding of shape, form and gesture. Ranging from action to classic poses, standing and reclining, these carefully selected subjects were designed to offer visually pleasing as well as challenging drawing subjects.
Furthermore, there is the choice of male and female models to draw from, music for inspiration, and four drawing tutorial movies, making Virtual Pose 2 an invaluable tool for every artist's reference.
* Features more models in a significantly higher number of poses (54 poses, 1,944 views in all)
Customer Reviews:
nice product, but could be better.......2007-06-27
Great idea, and great to have for the price I suppose. But theres a few things I should give a heads up on to anyone debating on buying VP2.
The image resolution is only so-so. Its not hard to see the pixilation when you expand quicktime to a larger size and even easier when you zoom in. A few of the frames have a pesky blurred/doubled over second edge.
The interface included is pretty small, about 4 inch view space on my monitor. This was remedied by simply opening the QT files directly off the cd rom.
Lastly, Virtual Pose 2 only works with Apple Quicktime.
So, unless you buy or happen to own quicktime pro [$30.00 upgrade], you will be unable to print any of the images on the program, make quicktime go into full/wide screen or shift your view around the image when zooming in [you can only zoom in on the center of the image with normal quicktime].
Virtual Pose 2: The Ultimate Visual Reference Series for Drawing the Human Figure.......2007-03-17
This is more than helpful for my art class. This is great!
virtual pose 2.......2006-08-05
when there is no model to be found i always have my cd. this is the greatest.
Virtual Pose 2.......2006-03-25
Since I am a sculptor it will be very helpful to me in getting different poses and to be aware how the muscles change in a particular pose.
Tools of the Trade.......2006-02-25
This book is a great tool for artists. I frequently use photographic references, and this one is great.
Book Description
Now in paperback, this critically acclaimed volumethe first-ever history of street photographyshowcases many of the greatest photographers of the past 150 years. Colin Westerbecks enlightening text illuminates each of these images.
Customer Reviews:
Too many words, not enough images.......2004-06-13
This book is more of a written history of street photography than a visual history. Too much space is given up to text, and there aren't enough images to satisfy.
Nevertheless, the book is an interesting read, or should I say an interesting skim. I skimmed through the text, stopping to read interesting bits here and there. Had those interesting bits been retained, much of the rest of the text eliminated and more images included, it would be a 5-star book.
One other comment is that the emphasis is on American street photography, to the point that some notable non-American street photographers are excluded completely.
street photography descibed in detail.......2004-03-01
A history of street photography described in both text and photos. The authors are well knowledged in the field and provide a very well layed out book that is enjoyable to read. A great coffee table book.
it's the photos..........2002-05-22
BYSTANDER embraces the social & cultural history of street photography. It touches upon the works of master photographers, yet leaves out so much about the actual photographs.
Trying to follow Meyerowitz's & Westerbeck's conversation, both obviously deeply emotional about the subject of street photography, simply went over my head in a rush of technical details & passionate positing as to why which photographer did what.
It is, however, the photographs in BYSTANDER that draw you back, again & again. The earliest ones that beg to have been enlarged, so rich in texture & composition; the later ones with their implicit social commentaries.
When we say that a picture is worth a thousand words, we're not kidding! Each & every photograph, even those that I couldn't make head nor tail, tell stories of our predecessors' lives & times, letting social history unravel before our eyes.
BYSTANDER is for everyone who loves to look at the past - the everyday, angular, shadow & light city past, through the window of a camera.
well done..........2002-04-16
first off, the authors do a fine job presenting to the reader an insightful history of street photography. they especially succeeded in explaining (or at least theorizing) how the various photographers came to create their respective photographic styles by finding sources of influence in modern art, architecture, and of course each other.
although there are other reviewers who believe the authors didn't give enough credit to hcb for shaping street photography into what it is today, it is important to note that even in the chapters which focus on the american photographers hcb is continuously cited as a major influence. just remember that this book is a history of street photography, not a bio of hcb!
i also agree with the reviewer who thought the photo placement within the book was a little inconvenient at times. but that minor problem does in no way detract from the overall value of such an insightful look at the history of street photography. enjoy!
Misguided.......2001-09-09
History of Street Photography! - I grabbed the book. Sat down. leafed through, then stopped, read one chapter in full. And put it down in disgust. "History" implies a systematic approach, a viewpoint as well as recounting of names and facts, it implies ANALYSIS. And the latter the authors are simply not qualified to provide. Of the many paragraphs describing images of Henri Cartier-Bresson here is what sticks in mind: they are "weird", grey, somehow "wrong". By the end of the essay on HBC we find out that "at one time he was the most famous photographer in the world" (citing from memory) - and the major reason why the world decided so is missing - the authors neither understood themselves, nor were qualified to pick up the right explanation from the published criticism: HCB (which he confirmed nimself) applied knowledge of painting to photographic "instant compositions". His images are artist's sketches from life and have to be analyzed as such if they are to be understood at all.
Instead of analysis and examples of correct reading/interpretation of included photos the authors fill space with anecdotes: some American writer accompanying HCB was so much irritated by the latter that he felt like pushing him under the wheels of a truck.
The history of street photography according to the book is such: XIX century, HCB and Europeans, and two larger chapters on Americans, in toto exceeding the first half of the book. Obviously, the centre of all interesting developments is the USA, the rest of the world does not count. In the end we are supplied with another empty and voluble script of a conversation between the authors expostulating Winogrand (on the lines of "do you think that where HCB would stop, HW would push it harder - yeah!")
My conclusion: if you want to understand street photography as an artistic development, turn to other books, such as the excellent "Henri Cartier-Bresson and the Artless Art" by Jean-Pierre Montier (ISBN 0821222856).

Book Description
William G. Anlyan, a dedicated doctor and gifted administrator, was a leader in the transformation of Duke University Hospital from a regional medical center into one of America’s foremost biomedical research and educational institutions. Anlyan’s fifty-five-year career at Duke University spanned a period of extraordinary change in the practice of medicine. He chronicles those transformations—and his role in them—in this forthright memoir.
Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1925, and schooled in the British tradition, Anlyan attended Yale University as an undergraduate and medical student before coming to the relatively unknown medical school at Duke University in 1949 for an internship in general and thoracic surgery. He stayed on, first as a resident, then as a staff surgeon. By 1961, he was a full professor of surgery. In 1964, Anlyan was named dean of the medical school, the first in a series of administrative posts at the medical school and hospital. Anlyan’s role in the transformation of the Duke University Medical Center into an internationally renowned health system is manifest: he restructured the medical school and hospital and supervised the addition of almost four million square feet of new or renovated space. He hired outstanding administrators and directed a staff that instituted innovative programs and groundbreaking research centers, such as the Cancer Center and the Physician’s Assistant Program.
Anlyan describes a series of metamorphoses in his own life, in the world of medicine, in Durham, and at Duke. At the time of his prep school upbringing in Egypt, medicine was a matter of controlling infectious diseases like tuberculosis and polio. As he became an immigrant medical student and then a young surgeon, he observed vast advances in medical practice and changes in the financing of medical care. During his tenure at Duke, Durham was transformed from a sleepy mill and tobacco town into the “City of Medicine,” a place where patients routinely travel for open-heart surgery and cutting-edge treatments for cancer and other diseases.
Anyone interested in health care, medical education, and the history of Duke University will find Anlyan’s memoir of interest.

Book Description
Increasing levels of global conflict and political violence provide a critical challenge for development theorists and practitioners. Many countries have endured decades of armed conflict, and others live under the permanent menace of political violence. Throughout, the gendered impacts of armed conflict and political violence are key issues. The gendered causes, costs, and consequences of violent conflicts have been underrepresented, and often misrepresented. This book gives a broader understanding of the complex, changing relations between women and men in societies facing violence and conflict.

Book Description
"The universe is such a strange and wonderful place that reality will always outrun the wildest imagination." -- Arthur C. Clarke
Is it possible that there are monsters in the ocean? Do certain people have the apparently effortless ability to endure intense pain? Is time travel possible? Could the Parthians have invented the first battery in 240 B.C.E.? Can you will someone to die? How did the ancient South Americans draw massive land pictures that can only be viewed from a great height?
All these strange phenomena--and many more--are investigated by authors John Fairley and Simon Welfare in an entertaining style. And Arthur C. Clarke contributes his own analysis to each chapter. His opinions are always thoughtful and wise, and often witty and provocative.

An all-time science fiction classic, Rendezvous with Rama is also one of Clarke's best novels--it won the Campbell, Hugo, Jupiter, and Nebula Awards. A huge, mysterious, cylindrical object appears in space, swooping in toward the sun. The citizens of the solar system send a ship to investigate before the enigmatic craft, called Rama, disappears. The astronauts given the task of exploring the hollow cylindrical ship are able to decipher some, but definitely not all, of the extraterrestrial vehicle's puzzles. From the ubiquitous trilateral symmetry of its structures to its cylindrical sea and machine-island, Rama's secrets are strange evidence of an advanced civilization. But who, and where, are the Ramans, and what do they want with humans? Perhaps the answer lies with the busily working biots, or the sealed-off buildings, or the inaccessible "southern" half of the enormous cylinder. Rama's unsolved mysteries are tantalizing indeed. Rendezvous with Rama is fast moving, fascinating, and a must-read for science fiction fans. Clarke collaborated with Gentry Lee in writing several Rama sequels, beginning with Rama II.
Book Description
In the year 2130, a mysterious and apparently untenanted alien spaceship, Rama, enters our solar system. The first product of an alien civilisation to be encountered by man, it reveals a world of technological marvels and an unparalleled artificial ecology.
But what is its purpose in 2131?
Who is inside it?
And why?

ark or vessel of the alien .......2007-07-05
Soft science fiction tale of man's first encounter with alien life forms. How did it get here and what can we expect? The space vessel, Rama enters the solar system traveling at a great rate of speed; future astronauts explore Rama which appears to be some kind of ark or vessel of the alien lifeforms.
There is certainly some suspenseful areas as well in book besides exploring Rama's mysteries. This book ended with a sequel in mind, certainly one I'll be reading soon
whirlwind tour leads to very little detail.......2007-06-28
Arthur C. Clarke will drive you hard though this book, all the while bombarding you with exotic ideas and profound imagination. It's dizzying and dazzling curious... but wholly lacks juicy details that'll satisfy a sci-fi geeks lust for specifics. That'll sum it up.
A few ideas about the Rama ship were difficult to grasp from his writing. For example, I never pictured the descending stairs very well, and what I did picture didn't seem right. Perhaps another idea should have been explored here. Anothet item I had a hard time dealing with were the squares closer to the south-side pole. Why were radically different squares there and what purpose did they serve? They certainly didn't serve a purpose in the story... it just led me to confusion. More things whihc needed explaining: the deep wells, the entombed "library" and the dismantling of the "sabotage." Most of the above items were mearly grazed upon and left behind in the authors duststorm, which was kicked up by his rapid fire speed of ideas and intelligence. Just wish all of it was conveyed more easily.
Must read.......2007-06-12
If you are after some fast-paced sci-fi action, this is not the book for you. This book is not about events or people, instead, this book is about an exploration into an unknown environment. There are no heroes, people take well calculated risks. If all those events were real, a lengthy but well-written report about the whole exploration might be pretty close to this book. That said, it is a very exciting story. Somewhere after the middle, I just could not stop reading until I felt that all important developments are done, and read well into the early morning hours. Next morning when I picked it up again, I was surprised to see that the story ended within a few pages, and the remaining of the book was excerpts from other Clarke books.
In my opinion, two things make this a must-read: first, the story itself, that is, the environment it describes, the politics, people's behaviors, etc. Second, the way that these are described. None of the characters feel phony (even though they are not fully developed by the story), and the descriptions are so alive that when I saw one of the illustrations of Rama by an artist in Wikipedia, very few things were not as I expected. I believe almost everybody who read this book have very similar mental images of Rama, and can find their ways in it without much difficulty if it really comes this way.
The Rama books are a great series.......2007-06-07
If you like Si Fi you like Arthur C. Clarke!
One of the Best Science Fiction Novels.......2007-05-05
This novel about an encounter with a stupendous alien spaceship inspired in me more daydreams than I can count. Rama is the perfect design for spaceship that can travel between the stars. It's in the shape of a tin can, protected from the harmful radiation of space by thick walls, and rotating to produce artificial gravity. This cylinder world, complete with an ocean, streams, forests, is a mini-Earth. Ah, the dreams!--and so intellectually stimulating.
It is explored by astronauts as it approaches the earth.
Another irresistable story is the "Far Arena," by Richard Ben Sapir. Click here, then scroll down to read by review. The far arena

A confusion of ideas........2005-03-28
I am totally confused by this book's title. Ordinarily, one might expect a book called "Arthur C. Clarke's Chronicles of the Strange and Mysterious" to have been written by Arthur C. Clarke!, but not so. It transpires, some years ago, Clarke hosted two hugely successful British television series' entitled Mysterious World and World of Strange Powers - the accompanying books for which went on to become best-sellers. Now, seemingly in an attempt to jump onto the bandwagon, these two authors have produced a book containing fresh mysteries and have invited Clarke to analyse them. Confusing or what?
And there hangs the problem as far as the subject matter is concerned. Clarke is a most distinguished scientist and engineer. For him, therefore, all paranormal events have a perfectly rational explanation - even if he does not actually have that explanation to hand.
We live in a world beset with mysteries and we like reading about them. As and when conclusive proof comes along to prove, discount or explain away this mystery or that, I personally do not want my reading of such matters spoilt by one who know best and by one who knows all the answers simply because he is a scientist.
Some interesting mysteries - but there are better books available.
