4 out of 5 stars Homes of Yesterday and Today.......2005-11-17

Witold Rybczynski's Home: A Short History Of An Idea, is an historical and informational text following the devlopment of the concept of home and discusses the psychological effects of different types of dwellings and personal space, architecture, and society. Home is a well-structured and planned tracing of society's development of the concepts of home and comfort and relates to today's audiences with a new perspective on where and how they live. One of Mr. Rybczynski's strengths as a writer is his conversational writing style and the flow of the organization of his main ideas.
Home instantly dives into the development of society's ideas of comfort and home with an almost staggering jump into a strong comparison and analysis of the four style lines of the Ralph Lauren collection. Mr. Rybczynski highlights the different aspects of the setting that Lauren creates to entice the public and the different props he uses to create this feeling of home. Home utilizes the time line approach, begining in the medieval era, to explain Ralph Lauren's heightend understanding of the public's ideas of comfort. Mr. Rybczynski also examines the work of Le Corbusier and relates the modernist movement with current modern trends.
Mr. Rybczynski's book remeinds architects and interior designers that even in today's society it is easy to get caught up in what is in style or what would make a statement rather than what is comfertable for occupants to inhabit. I recommend Mr. Rybczynski's book to anyone who would appreciate seeing their home in a whole new way.

4 out of 5 stars Look at familiar surroundings with new eyes........2005-09-26

So, I am predisposed to like Rybczynski -- his biography of Frederick Law Olmsted, "A Clearing in the Distance," is one of my favorites.

Sure enough, I liked "Home" as well. It describes the invention of the concepts of "home" and "comfort" and "domesticity." Those are not things I ever thought of as having been invented; but if Rybczynski is right, they were, and relatively recently at that.

Worth noting: My favorite chapter was the one on the Netherlands in the 1600s -- a really, really interesting society, it turns out, for a lot of different reasons.

Also: The book has lots of interesting notes on the history of furniture, especially the chair.

Finally: Above all this is a book that makes you look at familiar surroundings with new eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect companion to invite "Home".......2004-06-28

Rybczynski's elegant prose makes "Home: A Short History" a perfect fireside companion -- not least because he'll make you think about why you positioned your most comfy chair beside the fireplace, how your nice halogen reading light has transformed your evening hours, and whether you'd ever have even been permitted to sit down at the court of a French king.

If Tom Wolfe's "From Bauhaus to Our House" is a savage indictment of modern architecture, Rybczynski's book is no less disappointed but even more careful to show how far back in history architects went astray from the guiding principle of 'how to keep humans comfortable'. Till I read Rybczynski, I hadn't realized that 19th century women were more concerned with the sensible flow of activity from room to room in a house, and more interested in time/labor saving innovations such as electricity, than were the architects of the time: they were still preoccupied with the regularity of the façade rather than the sensible use of space inside the home.

In fact, I'd add a third book to add to your fireside reading about the home and its development in modern times: "A Place of My Own: The Education of an Amateur Builder", by Michael Pollan. (His meeting with the unlucky souls who live in a Peter Eisenmann home is worth the price of admission...)

4 out of 5 stars Exploration.......2004-06-07

This book is an exploration into the meaning of the word "comfort" and its place in the home. Rybczynski begins the volume with an examination of the Sixteenth Century painting by Durer "Saint Jerome in His Study". He describes each of the objects and furnishings visible in the paining in turn, noting that they are not particularly conducive to comfort or reflective of individuality. Rybczynski goes on to describe how this painting may be representative of the era in which it was painted, how houses at the time had many occupants and were spaces where people lived communally, but not necessarily as a family in the present sense of the term. He argues that in the Sixteenth Century, the nuclear family as a residential unit was non-existent, since children were sent away to live and work with others at a young age, and households always included many unrelated servants or apprentices. It was only later, as the concept of the nuclear family became more established that the need for privacy came to the fore, and private and public spaces began to be differentiated within the house. Later developments in technology, especially plumbing, ventilation, and lighting also came to influence housing design. One of the themes of the book is how the field of interior design has often been faced with the conflict between what looks good and what feels good. Rybcynski stresses that often the style of a design wins out, leaving the residents with the very least in comfort (to the point of having to carry their toothbrushes to and from the bathroom for lack of proper storage there, for instance).

Some of Rybcynski's discussion is quite interesting, particularly that concerning the influences French, Dutch, and British cultures have had on the development of houses and homes over the centuries, especially in North America. It would have been interesting to consider some of the influences of other world cultures on housing styles as well. For example, certainly Spanish and Arabic cultures have had a strong impact on house design and interiors of North American homes. However, considering such topics for the sake of completeness might have taken the book too far afield. In order to explore the concept of comfort with respect to design, Rybcynski has selected only a few examples of cultures and designers to explicate his points.

The book is academic in style, although quite accessible and engaging for the general reader. Sources are listed in the extensive endnotes, and there is an index.

I found Home by accident three years ago. Since then I've become a Rybczyski fan. This man knows how to write and has lots of thought provoking things to say about the relationship between people and their buildings. I recommend all his books. Witold is on my list of the top ten people I'd like to meet at a soiree.

This is a good general reference book. I am glad that I purchased it, but it isn't my faux painting Bible. However, if you are looking for many ideas, inspirations and photos, this is a good item for you. I am a seasoned amateur and for me, I need specific product references to really make the recipes work. This is more general. The bottom line; it is a nice book to own.

3 out of 5 stars Great Information for an Amateur Painter.......2006-11-07

This book has many finishes and the instructions to complete each. For an experienced painter of faux finishes, this is too simple, but for a person just getting started ion doing this kind of work, this is a good instruction book.

5 out of 5 stars Defining Celebrity Images and Captions.......2001-03-15

If you like photographs of celebrities that express their personalities in loving ways, this volume is a must for you!

This volume contains a few nude and topless female photographs that are artfully and tastefully done.

Francesco Scavullo created the images that most of us carry around with us that "define" the celebrities that have made an impression on us. These images are greatly enhanced in this volume by brief captions in which Mr. Scavullo shares his verbal perspective on the model. For example, about Diana Vreeland, he says, "Allure personified." His way with words is as good as his way with the camera. Louise Nevelson (one of the subjects of this volume) called his work "the poetic essence of his subject." In doing this, he "filters out visual cliches." In fact, he changed the images of many of his subjects (do you remember the glamor portrait of Martha Mitchell on the cover of New York Magazine?). He has been fascinated that "you could make people attractive."

Mr. Scavullo has an obvious love for people that carries from one thoughtful portrait to the next. He captures a liveliness that most people only feel a few times a year, yet that spark exists in almost all of these images. It's enough to get you to jump up out of your seat and kick your heels in the air!

The book's essay is also candid about Mr. Scavullo's experiences with manic depression, and his joy in doing his photography while in the manic state. Many of his downs are described as "nervous breakdowns" and certainly give a greater poignancy to these bouyant views.

There is also a brief chronology of his career that will put events in perspective for you.

The book is a blockbuster of outstanding images. I could have listed dozens as my favorites from these great black and white and color photographs. Here are a few selections to whet your appetite for the real thing:

            Sophia Loren, 1973

            Catherine Deneueve, 1970 (1st one)

            Elizabeth Taylor, 1977

            Ingemore, 1968

            Maria Badeau, 1970

            Claudia Schiffer, 1989

            Elizabeth Hurley, 1995

            Julie Andrews, 1994

            Bee Gees, 1977

            Gene Simmons, 1979

            Isabella Rossellini, 1986

What thought does it take for you to come alive as these people do? Notice that they seem younger, less guarded, and more confident and comfortable. That makes them more appealing.

Be your most attractive to inspire you . . . and everyone else!

            5 out of 5 stars A breathtaking book........1999-08-18

Francesco Scavullo has a gift, there's no question about that. His pictures are so full of life it's hard to believe they are frozen on paper. He also offers candid insights into some of his subjects which only add to the photo's charm. This book has something in it for everyone. It's a purchase you won't regret making if you have even the most remote interest in photography.

            5 out of 5 stars a must have.......1998-02-07

I collect and read photography books. This one I got as a Christmas present, and it's super. Whether you're into celebrities or just great photography, this book covers it all. I also like his reasoning and history behind some of the people he photographed. A great book to have in any collection.

            5 out of 5 stars What a find.......2000-12-14

Although I didn't like this one as much as Harum Scarum, it was still pretty fabulous. I found these books in a comic store and bought them on a whim (I go into comic stores about once every five years, and usually don't buy anything). They were every bit as satisfying as Tintin or Asterix were when I was twelve! Only better. These books are silly, funny, raunchy, and impossible to describe. The characters are wonderfully fallible, and the plots are totally off-the-wall, without being impossibly surreal.

In the Hoodoodad, you're never sure if there really IS a curse on the cool rock that they find. The guy who finds it is convinced, but it's not until the story takes a few twists that you really believe him. And of course his friends are no help; they're too busy being rude to each other in that laddish, fin de siecle slacker sort of way. It's hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars The best of European comix.......1999-12-14

Lewis Trondheim renews European comic book tradition, mixing animal-like characters such as Walt Disney's, English humor and French-Belgian style. In this album, the famous rabbit McConey faces a strange spelled rock. He and his friends run from one problem to another, but never lose their sense of humor. They'll meet amazing people such as Wilfried, the painter who don't want his pictures to be seen (he wouldn't be reincarnated as long as someone remembers him), the crazy director of the Museum and an all-around magician (voodoo, African wizard, Shaman, astrologist - you name it !) Most funny and witty indeed ! - No sex, no violence, no explicit text, but I wouldn't call it a book for children anyway : their parents may like it more than they would. And what's exciting is that Lewis Trondheim has got many other comic books waiting for a translation !

A Fit Month for Dying is the third book in M.T. Dohaney's highly praised trilogy about the women of Newfoundland's outports. Fans of The Corrigan Women and To Scatter Stones will embrace this new book, while those reading the author for the first time will discover her characteristic bittersweet humour. Tess Corrigan seems to be living the good life. She is a popular politician, the first woman to serve as a Member of the House of Assembly. Her husband Greg is a successful lawyer and son Brendan is a seemingly happy hockey-mad twelve-year-old. Originally from the village of The Cove, the family is now comfortably ensconced in Newfoundland's capital city of St. John's. Urged on by Greg's mother Philomena, Tess sets out to unravel her convoluted family tree. She searches out her natural father who is living in a retirement community, or as he calls it a "raisin farm," in Arizona. Ed Strominski was an American serving at the Argentia Naval Base when he married Tess's mother Carmel. Charming and outgoing, his one flaw was neglecting to reveal the small detail that he already had a wife. The stigma of growing up as the daughter of the abandoned "poor Carmel" has shaped Tess's life. Involved with her own family problems and with her political work, Tess has no inkling of trouble when Brendan begs her to let him quit the Altar Servers' Association at their St. John's church. Always forthright, Tess insists that he fulfill his responsibilities to the organization. Her decision sets into motion a series of betrayals, revelations and realizations that change forever her family and the village of The Cove. After a confrontation with the father of one of Brendan's friends, Tess is shattered by the disclosure that her son has been abused by their trusted priest, Father Tom. Shame and grief envelop the family and their world becomes as turbulent as the seas of Newfoundland. Deeply held beliefs are destroyed as the characters begin to challenge long imposed systems of cultural, political and spiritual authority. But out of the ashes of Tess's life a small phoenix of hope arises in the form of Greg's brother who, on his way to a feed of capelin, reveals to her his own story of abuse and survival. Buoyed by his story, Tess begins to gather strength to rebuild her life, her family and her faith in human nature.

            5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2003-01-21

This was a great book, I thoroughly loved it! The writer captured both the humour and language of Newfoundlanders! In fact, it captured Nflders. much better than "The Shipping News" ever did. I read with delight as Tess described life in the Cove as a child then as she returns to visit her in-laws. The author writes with such an ease, the language is fluid and the story develops well. At first, I thought the story and the betrayal was going to be about Tess's search for her father but I was pleasantly surprised to read it was only a backdrop in the story. I never suspected the "family trouble" but I did figure out Danny's problems while he was home for his father's death. The author certainly packed a lot of story into a small book!! I am going to look for the previous book, "The Corrigan Women" to read in the VERY near future!! Very highly recommended.

              5 out of 5 stars excellent & necessary book.......2006-07-24

Since being diagnosed with Hepatitis C, I've read Dr. Palmer's book, & continue to review it as questions come up. It is irreplaceable as a resource book.

5 out of 5 stars A Review on Dr. Palmer's Guide to Hepatitis & Liver Diesease.......2005-10-06

I have read several books on liver disease but none of them are as good as this one. I have read the first edition a few years ago and it was very helpful since I have Hepatitis B and cirrhosis. It helped me a lot in understanding the treatment such as liver biopsy, interferon and Lamivudine. It probably helped me in staying alive and healthy since I followed her advice on diet, exercise and taking drugs and supplements. I learned that some herbs, supplements and drugs such as iron, vitamin A and aspirin that I took previouslly could be harmful. I also restricted my salt content and fat in my food. The second edition is even better since it is even more update on the supplements and drugs. The information on Glucosamine is particularly welcome since it helped a lot in my osteoarthritis. I highly recommend this book to anyone with Hepatitis.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Dr. Palmer's Guide to Hepatitis and Liver Disease.......2004-05-25

The much anticipated 2nd edition of " Dr. Melissa Palmer's Guide to Hepatitis and Liver Disease" hits an out of the park home run. In the five years since the first publication much new and vital information will enable its readers to digest the new drugs and treatment options which will be available to them. This edition will shed important new light on the latest findings worldwide to enable people with all types of liver disease to better understand their liver ailment and learn how best to deal with this chronic disorder.
This book was specifically written for sufferers of liver disease, their family members, as well as the healthcare professionals to whom their patients lives are entrusted. This book will serve as an extraordinary reference to those afflicted with liver disease and hepatitis to become knowledgeable about their particular illness and how best to seek out the appropriate treatment.
I feel that the beauty of this book lies in its simple folksy way the patient narrative
describes their own ailment and then goes on to describe the roadmap to diagnosis
and treatment options. This is done through explaining lab tests and liver biopsies results which the patient will have performed. Dr. Palmer dedicates a chapter to finding the best physician to participate in in your care and recovery.
The book also covers many frequently asked questions by patients which include the standard treatment options and their common side effects. The book also broaches
how the potentially adverse side effects of therapy can be minimized giving a much improved quality of life. A good number of pages are dedicated to nutrition, herbal remedies, and in extreme cases, liver transplantation
My prediction is that this book will be a bible to liver sufferers and enable them to live healthier and more vital lives .

5 out of 5 stars Very informative book on Liver Disease.......2001-12-16

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Melissa Palmer's Guide to Hepatitis & Liver Disease.......2001-06-29

This book contains a veritable encyclopedia of information concerning the various forms of Hepatitis. The book is written in language that non-medical people can readily understand. The book answered many questions that I had, as well as teaching me to live with chronic Hepatitis with a minimum of life disruption. This book is a real find. I give it five stars. This book is a must for any person suffering from Hepatitis in any of its forms. It should be the first book a person includes in any library or repository of information on Hepatitis.

              Book Description

This new volume covers development from the VK 45.02(P), VK 45.03(H) to the modifications under design for the Tiger II at the end of the war. All of this illustrated with scale drawings by Hilary L. Doyle combined with drawings, sketches, and photographs depicting external modifications is well as internal views. Over twenty years of intensive research went into finding the original documents needed to create this new history on the development, characteristics, and tactical capabilities of the Tiger series. Tom Jentz has conducted an exhaustive search for suviving records of the design/assembly firms (including Henschel, Krupp, Nibelungenwerk, Porsche, and Wegmann), the Heeres-Waffenamt, the D656 series of manuals on the Tiger, and the war diaries and operations reports from the German units. The written records were supplemented by examining thousands of photos. On-sight research into almost all the surviving Tigers provided details that could only be obtained from actual specimens. New information was found on the evolution of the heavy tank series, the key decisons on the design of the Tigers, the significant modifications made during the production runs, production statistics, the Tigers characteristics and tactical capabilities, an exact accounting of the issue of the Tigers to the combat units, and combat account written directly after the actions. Tom Jentz is also the author of Germany's Tiger Tanks: Tiger I & II - Combat Tactics; Germany's Panther Tank: The Quest for Combat Supremacy; Panzertruppen 1933-1942; and Panzertruppen 1943-1945 (all four titles are available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.)., over 120 b/w photographs, over 130 line drawings, 9" x 12"

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent technical history of the Tiger II.......2000-02-11

Thomas Jentz and artist/collaborator Hillary Louis Doyle have created an excellent technical overview of the development and production modifications of the Tiger II "King Tiger," using only original documentation and actual preserved vehicles as references. There is no second-hand information of any kind, and no propagation of postwar myths. There is less pure engineering information than the earlier work by Walter Spielberger (i.e. don't expect diagrams of the inner workings of engine and transmissions), but the intended audience for this book is clearly the model-builder. The numerous drawings are to the popular modeler's scale of 1/35th, and numerous detail photos will aid the would-be model builder. In combination with such works as Wolfgang Schneider's "Tigers in Combat," you would have an ideal library on the King Tiger. However, this volume does not cover the Jagdtiger tank destroyer (Schiffer does publish a two-volume work on this vehicle by another author).

4 out of 5 stars An excellent case study of the Tiger Ausf. B........1999-09-09

This is THE book about the German Tiger II tank.

Thomas Jentz outdid himself in researching every bit of detailed technical information about this historical vehicle. Included in this book are many never-before-seen internal and external photographs of both the prototypes and production vehicles. There are also pages of detailed technical drawings of the Tiger II tank at different stages of it's development and the war.

Although detailed and loaded with technical information, this book has absolutely nothing about the combat and operational history of the Tiger II. There are no explanations about why the various modifications were made and makes it really hard to casually read the book.

In general, this is a technical manual about the Tiger II tank aimed at technical history buffs and modellers. It is a great supplement to Thomas Jentz's other book about the operational history of the Tiger tanks. But for the technical drawings, photographs and descriptions alone, this book is cannot be matched and is worth every penny of it's price.

                Book Description

The Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU), an Australian Army unit, superseded the civilian government of Papua New Guinea early in 1942 and administered the area until mid-1946. This book traces all major aspects of ANGAU's war. It provides the only full-length study of Papua New
Guinean interaction with Australian and American armed forces in the Second World War, filling a considerable gap in the study of Australia's colonial administration and in New Guinea's political and military history.
