Customer Reviews:
Relevance to software engineering.......2007-02-17
I heard of this book from my fellow software engineers. I then read it with fascination. You can essentially substitute "software" for "building", and it'll be a terrific book on design principles of software.
Highly recommended... to software engineers!
an enjoyable must-read for anyone who works with buildings and/or lives in one.......2006-03-15
An inspiring meander that outlines a gaping hole in architectural thought and practice, and well-written enough that one of the personal anecdotes almost made this grown engineer cry. What Brand suggests about four-dimensional architecture contributes (along with other such thoughts by Alexander and related thoughts from disparate sources such as d'Estree Sterk and Rybczynski) to a still-developing architectural outlook that incorporates human-building interactions and the consideration of time - an outlook that holds much promise and should be further investigated by building professionals and architectural theorists alike.
I read this book as a metaphor.......2005-10-12
The book is about buildings -- but read this as a metaphor and you'll see that he is also talking about how we change as a society. I read this book and thought about the computer industry -- how computer systems change as the learn about users. This is a clever book and informative. Read it with an open mind and you may find more than what is in the pages.
What you'll learn from How Buildings Learn.......2005-08-26
I liked this book so much I bought one for my sister who lives in a bungalow (explained in the book), one for my father, one for me (and then a replacement when that got lost). The book is fascinating for people interested in buildings but also a good lesson in planning, executing and followup on anything. The chapters talk about how you can design to be just-right (which never is) or for flexibility and the one on maintenance (with a wild story about the replacement beam for New College that was planted hundreds of years earlier). Software particularly, which is my field. It's now assigned reading for the technical writers who work for me. Buy it.
Interesting Observations.......2005-05-05
Anyone interested in architecture or historical preservation would probably enjoy the observations and case studies in this book. Brand has a new, fascinating idea to examine what makes building livable, and to look at what happens to structures in the decades after they are built. Good thinking, and maybe this could be the beginning of a new area of architectural scholarship. Recommended!

Great information........2006-12-09
For someone totally new to encaustic, this book is great! I am interested in encaustic painting and this book gave me tons of technical information regarding materials--wax, pigments, brushes, heat guns, etc. Additionally, it shows many different expressions in encaustic art: abstract paintings, representational paintings, sculptures....This book does not teach one HOW to paint, rather it highlights the materials and examples of encaustic works. This is a very informative, enjoyable book.
Great place to start exploring.......2006-06-15
This is a great introduction to the medium. I've painted with acrylics for a few years and wanted to experiment with encaustic. Mattera gives a simple but thorough overview of encaustic. After reading this book I felt I had the basic knowledge I needed to start and it has continued to guide and inspire my exploration. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in painting with wax.
The Art of Encaustic Painting.......2006-02-06
I think the book is really great. It's not one of those books that takes you steep by steep through the proces of Encaustic painting but gigves you just a enought to venture out on your own. It's a book that I go back to quite offen to get my creative juices going.
Outstanding Book for Fascinating Art Medium.......2006-01-16
Joanne Mattera has written a comprehensive volume about my favorite medium, encaustic painting. She details the history of the art, as well as current artists using the medium. Perfect for beginners in encaustic, as complete instructions on melting, mixing, fusing, tools, safety issues, as well as how to build substrates, are given.
The Art of Encaustic Painting.......2005-09-04
Very informative and inspirational.
As a novice artist it really put me into the perspective of
experimenting with encaustic in the near future.

I recommend this superb book to all U/W photographers........1998-06-09
I have read this book several times, and review it before any major photo expedition. Howard concentrates on the essential art of underwater photography in a concise, readable, meaningful way. He avoids extraneous technical information that so many other manuals use as filler, and focuses clearly on the essence of underwater photography. I gave my original copy away as a gift, and was overjoyed when I was able to pick up a used copy of this out of print paperback. I recommend this superb book to all underwater photographers, new and old.

Real pros at work in this book! .......2007-02-23
Worth owning just to see the beautiful photography within! Designed for the professional and avid amateur, this book is full of useful advice and discussions of such topics as: what happens to light underwater, shooting wildlife and people underwater, angle choices, and even suggestions on how to sell underwater photography. A great choice!
Underwater Photography.......2006-03-19
Excellent book for the beginner. It is well written, and concise. Plenty of great shots and how to take them.
FINE BOOK ON UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY.......2005-10-25
This outstanding effort by Brian Skerry with Howard Hall is very definitely one of the finest books I have ever read on the art and wizardry of taking pictures in the hostile environment of a watery world. Lots of good info here on equipment and techniques for the aspiring underwater photographer. Although published at the dawn of the age of the practical high definition digital camera it shows that the essence of photography is above all to work with light and that the rules are the same for any camera. Packed with splendid images and insightful text this book belongs on the bookshelf of all divers who aspire to excellence in the world of underwater photography.
More pictures than information.......2005-08-03
Not much information in this one. I read the whole thing in just a few hours, and I read slowly. Not what I expected at all. Did not cover digital photography much at all. Of course, digital was new when the book came out, but now books like this are bound (no pun intended) to go the way of the 35MM cartridge.
Excellent, detailed manual with inspiring examples.......2004-10-12
This is by far the most helpful book on underwater photography that I have read up to now. It is not just a coffee-table book of gorgeous images. The authors have genuinely set out to teach the craft of u/w photography. Each photograph is discussed in detail - how it was taken, how the exposure was determined, shooting angle, the instructions to the model, how they got the fish to look through the hole, etc. Best of all, they teach you how to appraise other photographs, to identify the technique used and to criticise weaknesses. The images and the technique data are mainly from film cameras, but digital cameras are discussed too. An excellent, inspiring, articulate, readable and beautifully-presented book. Sits next to Jim Church's Essential Guide to Composition on my quick access bookshelf.

Outlines using pantothenic acid in a successful struggle inflammatory arthritis.
Customer Reviews:
Pantothenic Acid works!.......2001-06-28
In her book Phyllis Eisenstein says she first read about pantothenic acid in Adelle Davis's book "Let's Get Well." I read Adelle Davis's book over 10 years ago and tried the pantothenic acid (500 mg. twice a day) with food and it absolutely works for me. It took about a month for me, but the pain and swelling in my hands miraculously subsided. I've realized that I'll have to take this the rest of my life because when I quit taking it the pain, swelling and burning of my hands and joints returns.
Excellent Book.......2000-08-29
This is an excellent book for anyone who is suffering from arthritis. I personally know from relatives who suffer from arthritis that the alternative treatments in this book actually work! And I am not a fan of alternative medicine.
Book Description
In 1942 Attu, the westernmost island in the Aleutian chain, was home to two Americans and forty-five Aleut hunters and their families. Located one thousand miles from the Alaska mainland and isolated by year-round damp fogs which manage to survive the constant high winds, Attu was called by an early visitor “the lonesomest spot this side of hell.”
In June 1942 Attu and the nearby island of Kiska were invaded by the Japanese in the hopes of accomplishing several goals: forestalling use of the islands by the Americans, hindering U.S.-Soviet cooperation, and establishing bases for attacks on the American mainland. On 11 May 1943, the U.S. effort to retake Attu began. The struggle was essentially an infantry battle. The ever-present fog, rain, and high wind limited the use of air power, and the craggy terrain made mechanized equipment next to useless. The infantry retook the island foot by foot.
Lieutenant Robert J. Mitchell was one American wounded in the battle. During his convalescence he took down the accounts of the survivors while their memories were fresh. He presents them here in their own immediate, direct, and informal language.
Customer Reviews:
A Fantastic Account .......2007-09-10
I bought this book because my father fought in the battle for Attu in WWII. He hardly ever spoke about the War but did say Attu was the worst place on earth. The accounts written in this book have given me much greater insight into the things he described to me late in his life. This book has also given me even more respect for the men and women who fought in WWII, and the hardships they had to endure, to protect our freedom.
Excellent book and a must read.
Straightforward.......2004-04-03
Not a great piece of literature, not always well written, and sometimes hard to pay attention to -- but this is a straightforward, brief and accurate history. I gave the book to a Veteran of Attu, and he said "This is right on the money."
Worth reading if you have interest in Attu and the history of WWII.
Could have been better.......2001-11-17
This book had a hard time keeping my attention. It is of course, short stories from the men who were there and originally written to be read by other soldiers only, in a soldiering magazine, circa 1944. I felt "The Thousand Mile War," was much better written and left me with a better understanding of the battle for Attu. Now, please understand some of the soldiers stories were very interesting, but more of them weren't, in my opinion.
An outstanding contribution to World War II studies........2000-06-06

In The Capture Of Attu, he presents them in his fellow combatants own immediate, direct, and informal language. This compilation of eye-witness, front-line infantry descriptions is a very welcome and highly recommended addition to the growing library of World War II memoirs now available for scholars and military buffs.

Book Description
This collection of 12 new essays will tell the story of how the gradual transformation of industrial society into service-driven postindustrial society affected black life and culture in the city between 1900 and 1950, and it will shed light on the development of those forces that wreaked havoc in the lives of African Americans in the succeeding epoch. The book will examine the black urban experience in the northern, southern and western regions of the U.S. and will be thematically organized around the themes of work, community, city buliding, and protest. the analytic focus will be on the efforts of African Americans to find work and build communities in a constant ly changing economy and urban environments, tinged with racism, hostility, and the notions of white supremacy. Some chapters will be based on original research, while others will represent a systhesis of existing literature on that topic.

Book Description
In his groundbreaking new book, John Pollock establishes an outpost at the crossroads where artificial intelligence meets philosophy. Specifically, he proposes a general theory of rationality and then describes its implementation in OSCAR, an architecture for an autonomous rational agent he claims is the "first AI system capable of performing reasoning that philosophers would regard as epistemically sophisticated."
A sequel to Pollock's How to Build a Person, this volume builds upon that theoretical groundwork for the implementation of rationality through artificial intelligence. Pollock argues that progress in AI has stalled because of its creators' reliance upon unformulated intuitions about rationality. Instead, he bases the OSCAR architecture upon an explicit philosophical theory of rationality, encompassing principles of practical cognition, epistemic cognition, and defeasible reasoning. One of the results is the world's first automated defeasible reasoner capable of reasoning in a rich, logical environment.
Underlying Pollock's thesis is a conviction that the tenets of artificial intelligence and those of philosophy can be complementary and mutually beneficial. And, while members of both camps have in recent years grown skeptical of the very possibility of "symbol processing" AI, Cognitive Carpentry establishes that such an approach to AI can be successful.
