Excellent pictorial coverage of styles combined with clear definitions of criteria

4 out of 5 stars An Informative, Easy to Access Guide That's Helped Me Many Times.......2006-05-16

While other "field guides" to American architecture provide more details or bigger/better photos than this one, a key part of what makes 'Identifying American Architecture' so good is what it DOESN'T tell you. That is, it focuses on naming basic (and often not-so-basic) architectural elements in a broad range of styles for you, without the encyclopedic details of each style's history and genealogy, which can be researched elsewhere.

This pinpointed, in-the-moment approach is VERY helpful when you're walking around an area with a rich mix of architectural styles, as in Boston, Chicago, New York, Nashville, San Francisco, and other major cities established 150-300 years ago. In Boston, for example, you can easily find yourself looking at a 1790 Federal-style townhouse one minute, a Richardsonian church from the 1870s the next, and a Second Empire government building (circa 1890) a minute after that. With this easy-to-carry guide in hand, you can quickly identify the differences, point them out to friends, make notes, and move on.

Likewise, this book is a good, easy access reference to have on hand when reading any book -- fiction or non-fiction -- featuring a lot of architectural description. Again, it doesn't have deep details, but there's enough to help you picture and/or understand scenes better. Students and writers also find it helpful in knowing their pilasters from their parapets when writing descriptions of historic buildings and neighborhoods.

In addition to offering at least 4 examples of each architectural style, with the various elements all enumerated clearly, this book also features an alphabetical index of primary architectural elements that make up classic buildings. That's then topped off with a Pictorial Glossary of Terms, where many of the architectural elements that make up classic architecture are shown and denoted in just enough detail to be useful and clarifying.

All in all, for a 128 page book, this one has A LOT of very useful information, presented in an even MORE useful and accessible format. Worth every nickel.

3 out of 5 stars Torn between two and three stars here..........2006-01-15

Well, it's not the worst field guide I ever saw but as a previous reviewer said, it has some serious flaws. Most notably, I struggled to focus on the wee tiny numbers that identify the architectural characteristics.

Man, those are some small numbers. And sometimes they get so clustered together, you're not sure which number goes with which architectural feature.

The long, thin layout of the graphics works against this book, too. The pictures of houses just don't fit well in this format.

And (sadly), I agree that some of the photos are a little washed out. With all that said, I do believe you can learn something from every book and this book does contain a wealth of information.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Field Guide to American Domstic Architecture.......2005-09-12

I have been collecting field guides to American domestic archiecture for many years and beyond a doubt this is the very worst guide that I have come across. This guide has many strikes against it.

First, it is too short to give the reader any real understanding of the different styles of American domestic architecture. Many styles are ignored and the styles that are covered are done so superficially. As an example, the section on the International Style of architecture only has two washed out black and white photographs. The few details that are explained are done so in the most superficial manner.

Second, the quality of the printing is very poor. The quality of the paper and binding makes the book look like it was produced int he 1970's. Worst of all, the photographs used to show the different styles are washed out. A revolution in publishing has happened in the past twenty years and this publisher has missed out in the opportunity to produce a modern looking guide.

Finally, there are some wonderful field guides in current production. Don't waste your money on this guide. Check out the guides produced by Lester Walker and Virginia McAlester. Those are the types of guides that can inspire the reader to learn more about history and American houses. Avoid this guide!

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for students of American architecture.......2001-02-01

Enhanced with 214 photographs, John Blumenson's Identifying American Architecture: A Pictorial Guide To Styles And Terms 1600-1945 enables the reader to associate real buildings with architectural styles, elements, and orders. Every photograph is keyed to an explanatory text pointing out characteristic features of each building's style. An extremely "user friendly" identification tool, Identifying American Architecture is highly recommended for both students of American architecture and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in identifying architectural classifications of buildings they encounter on trips and excursions throughout the country or in his own neighborhood.

        Book Description

From Don Bluth - master animator, artist and director of such cartoon classics as The Secret of N.I.M.H., An American Tail, The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Anastasia and Titan A.E. - comes Don Bluth's The Art of Storyboard, a one-of-a-kind textbook that describes in detail the technical and artistic processes involved in crafting storyboards for animated films, the visual blueprints that lay the foundation for the animators magic. Don Bluth takes readers on a journey as only an artist of such vast skills and filmmaking experience can, going from the breakdown of a script, through story conferences with Don Bluth Films collaborators Gary Goldman and John Pomeroy, and onto the finished boards. Loaded with technical tips and insights into the tapping of the creative imagination, The Art of Storyboard also features page after page of Bluth's beautiful storyboard illustrations, many in full color. Whether used as an inspiring tool for professional and aspiring animators or just for the sheer joy of seeing how the written word is channeled through the animator's mindscape on its way to the screen, Don Bluth's The Art of Storyboard is a fascinating peek behind the curtain of film's most creative storytelling medium.

I think this is a decent overview of the storyboarding process. OF course each of his subjects could require a college-level class and large book to seriously cover, but I appreciate Bluth's perspective on what he views as the signficant elements of the workflow and his explanation of why they are important.

        Book Description

John Gary Brown's richly evocative photographs remind us that cemeteries--shadowy markers of death and grief--also shine forth with life and art. By turns starkly sobering, nostalgic, provocative, and quirkily humorous, his photos capture the human spirit preserved in all of its amazing diversity.

Celebrating master stone sculptors as well as grassroots and ethnic folk artists, Brown's striking images document the rich traditions of cemetery art as found throughout Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado, and New Mexico. The art itself manifests a great many idiosyncratic forms and subjects including an Egyptian sphinx, a gigantic baseball, a salesman's suitcase, a rolltop desk, a car-engine shrine, plexiglass-enclosed dolls, life-size limestone statuary, hovering marble angels, elaborate wrought-iron crosses, along with more modest traditional motifs in etched-grantie and concrete.

Brown's own artistry and insights illuminate the ways in which these works embody or reflect personal grief, family relationships, religious and ethnic values, social status, occupations, avocations, aesthetics, as well as unrealized hopes and dreams. Both informative and entertaining, his book provides a haunting tribute to this neglected art form.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Well-Written.......2002-07-17

Ok, so not everyone is into the "darker" side of life. We prefer to focus on sunflowers, streams and good old-fashioned values here in the midwest.
To many people, gravestones are just plain creepy. Haven't we all watched horror movies where the dead crawl out from beneath a cracked headstone and kill innocent lovers?
Mr. Brown's book made me look at the gravestones in a brighter (although not unentirely SAD) light. I saw the loss that families suffered through in the intricacy of massive stone mausoleums. I felt the emptiness of parents in the lifelike sculptures of their children. And I shook my head at the quirkiness of folks whose death markers are every bit as weird as they themselves must have been.
I've had this book for 5 years and I STILL pick it up now and again to read the stories behind the cemeteries. I have also given it as a gift to people in my life who I know won't get totally freaked out by it. They LOVE it.
It is a wonderful read/lookat/whatever.... just try it!--

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on tombstone art.......2001-05-22

My husband John and I love tombstone art and stomp around the countryside taking photos of cemeteries. This is one of our favorite books, with lots of wonderful photos of cemeteries around St. Louis and so forth. The author also writes a wonderful commentary on the nature of cemeteries, their conditions, and how we view them today as a modern American society. The photos of the children's graves are especially haunting. A must for collectors of tombstone art.

5 out of 5 stars A Portfolio of Work Worth a Second Look.......1999-02-10

John Gary Brown, does an excellent job at showing the eccentricity and beauty of grave markers. He uses different angles, and points of view in his compositions, to bring out a morbid beauty, that is rarely seen by the naked eye. A truly impressive collection of masterpieces. Just when you think the works speak for themselves, Brown also includes wonderful poetry, which co-exists perfectly with the photographs. A must for anyone's artistic anthology collection.

4 out of 5 stars Good photos but descriptions often contain errors........1997-01-09

While the photography is excellent, and the author offers several interesting insights into symbolism and customs, the facts about particular monuments are incorrect. He gives the wrong locations for several monuments (placing them in cemeteries across town), and the descriptions of the cemeteries themselves contain errors

              Book Description

During James T. Laney's term of service, Emory grew from a solid regional teaching institution into a major research university. By most salient measures—endowment, student enrollment, faculty size, and square footage—Emory's growth was enormous.

This book examines how Laney accomplished the transformation of Emory. Particular attention is given to Laney's commitment to Emory being a moral community concerned with advancing the common good. This detailed analysis provides insight into Emory's maturation as a leading research university, into the moral leadership given by Laney, and into the development of higher education in this country.

By exploring the moral authority of Laney himself as well as his commitment to the ideal of institution as a moral community, Gulley provides an important resource for understanding the dynamics of moral leadership. By studying Laney's experience, we can better understand the transformation of Emory University and higher education in the twentieth century. Laney's example also points directions for colleges and schools should take in the twenty-first century.

Do you still curse yourself over the day you met your hero, but instead of asking him the one question that was nagging you for years, you couldn't utter a word because you were struck dumb? Well, curse no more. 'Still Talking Blue' is a unique collection of interviews that will answer everything you wanted to know about your Everton heroes and with none of the unnecessary waffle - because it only asks real questions, as submitted by the fans.

Brought together via the miracle of the World Wide Web, the online mailing lists and virtual notice boards; disenfranchised Evertonians scattered across the globe proudly display their astounding recall of bygone events and absurd trivia. From Iceland to South Africa, Australia to Israel, long-suffering Bluenoses are finally given the opportunity to ask questions of their heroes.

Twelve in-depth interviews spanning the decades from the Fifties, when shorts were long and Dave Hickson's quiff was the envy of Hollywood, right through to his final day as an Everton player with Dave Watson. No challenge shirked, no holds barred and no punches pulled - 'Still Talking Blue' shoots from the hip and leaves no question unasked. Join us as we endeavour to track down John Baileys `big hat' and Gordon West's handbag and move seamlessly on to more pressing topics such as Kevin Ratcliffe's biggest regret, Mick Lyons' worst injury and Alan Harpers favourite goal.

So, if you lie awake at night wondering just what went wrong in the `68 Cup Final, whether Jimmy Gabriel still has his white trench coat, if Barry Horne really does like The Cocteau Twins, how Dave Hickson has managed to hang on to his hair or whether Bob Latch ever sampled the delights of Hafnia pork luncheon meat, then unfurrow your brow because the answers all lie within these pages.

In a desperate world filled with remorse and regret No Love Lost hopes to serve as a practical and spiritual guide for those women who are tired of experiencing agonizing breakups and who are seriously seeking real answers to the age old question - why does it keep happening to me?. The message presented in this handbook is grounded in the Word of GOD, but even if you are not a devout Christian there is no denying that these principles have been around for thousands of years and will continue to withstand the test of time. Unfortunately, these days, we are doing things completely wrong. Thus, each chapter starts off with a description of what you should not do. Then it gives you useful and divinely inspired suggestions, on what you should do to never know the agony of lost love.

As the title tells us, "No Love Lost" is a practical and spiritual guide for women who never want to know the agony of lost love. Although small at only 32 pages, "No Love Lost" is well worth picking up and reading. It is broken into an introduction and conclusion, plus seven chapters, each offering a new principle on how to avoid lost love.

Kimberly Clark points out that one need not be a beauty queen to apply the principles she presents in her book. The guidelines presented do make a few assumptions though-both parties are at least somewhat interested in pursuing a romantic relationship, and also, the men we are dealing with are assumed to be reasonably sane and well-adjusted men. If your man does not fit these criteria, Kimberly tells you to run as fast as you can away from this type and to NEVER look back.

In each chapter, Kimberly tells us what NOT to do, what we SHOULD do, and what we NEED to know. She ends each chapter with a Bible verse offering support for her ideas presented. The handbook is grounded in the word of GOD, which I find very appealing.

"No Love Lost" is written for women who want to understand the male-female relationship. I believe the information would be helpful to all married women and any female dating or in any relationship with a male. The book is written for those weary of experiencing breakups and for those wondering why some women seem to have all the luck with men and relationships as opposed to others who always seem to experience agony and loss. Explaining the differences is Kimberly Clark's goal. Even if you get along fine with your man, you may learn something to improve upon what you have. Clark's handbook is very practical, but it is also spiritual and sensible. I found myself thinking, "Of course it's true, I just never thought about it." The basis for her principles is supported in the word of GOD-the Bible, but Non-Christians can readily apply the beliefs.

A principle I found memorable was that Clark says we must concentrate on letting our man know exactly what we expect from him and how we want to be treated. She says woman should be cherished as the gift from GOD that she truly is. Women are the gift. "And what is more, man was not created for the sake of the woman, but woman for the sake of the man." (1 Corinthians 11:9 NWT) The verse commands women to respect and be in subjection to their husbands. In return, a husband should love his wife, and a wife should respect her husband.

I found "No Love Lost" to be very informative and beneficial. Clark explains that emotionally, men are without a doubt the weaker sex, and therefore, this is why as females, we should not cry over everything. She also tells us why we will fail if we yell. Well-adjusted men view anything of an emotional nature as sneaky and underhanded, and they hate to lose at anything. Clark shares her belief that the single worst personality trait a woman, hoping to avoid lost love, could ever have is low self-esteem. Men need our strength and security, as it provides them with encouragement. I can recommend "No Love Lost" without a doubt.

Though this book includes scripture passages, it's just as useful to non-Christians. It's practical, but encouraging, in that it describes what should be done in a relationship along with examples of what shouldn't be done. Mrs. Clark's conversational, personal writing style and sense of humor, as well as her openness to share her own experience, make this book a joy to read.

War, as the general said, is hell. But sometimes it also brings out the best in people, as illustrated by this gripping new collection of war writing. From the siege of Troy to the present day, historian Jon E. Lewis offers a new selection of sixty unforgettable accounts—many firsthand—of the horror and heroism of war. These include analyses by celebrated historians, letters home by ordinary GIs, high-adrenaline memoirs by frontline combatants, and memorable reportage by master chroniclers: Ernest Hemingway on bombings in Madrid, Tim O’Brien on Vietnam, John Reed on the Mexican Revolution, and Winston Churchill on the Battle of Omdurman.

5 out of 5 stars Pulling the trigger.......2002-01-08

The mere concept of war has always befuddled me. The fact that you may be a teacher in a classroom talking about math and the next week deep in a blood bath knowing that every second may be your last is beyond comprehension for most of us. This book reminds you very harshly that these things did happen and who can tell it better than the people who have fought? You realize how funny it sounds to be upset about a broken car or money lost in stock market when you read about face to face combat. I recommend this book to everyone who cries out for war at every chance they get. The stories cover wars from Greek times to WWI, WWII, Vietnam and Spanish Civil War and most are written by authors and poets so they are really capturing. There is even an excerpt from the journal of a German pilot from WWI. That is not something you read every day.

                      Book Description

War is hell. It is also suffering, courage, fear, nobility, depravity, honor, death. War in all its aspects, from the tragic to the horrific to the heroic, is vividly depicted in this riveting volume of dispatches by established authors like Stephen Crane, Rudyard Kipling, George Orwell, and Ernest Hemingway, who turned their literary hand to, respectively, the Spanish-American War, Boer War, Spanish Civil War, and D-Day 1944, as well as professional news correspondents like Ernie Pyle, Alan Moorehead, Peter Arnett, and John Hersey, who made something like art out of war reportage. Eyewitness accounts of other writers among the one hundred in this volume include William L. Shirer's on the surrender of the French in World War II, Edward R. Murrow's on the London Blitz, Alexander Werth's on the siege of Leningrad, and Martha Gellhorn's on the Battle of the Bulge. Found here, too, are David Halberstrom's Pulitzer Prize-winning piece on the coup against Diem, Seymour Hersh on the My Lai massacre, and John Pilger on the last day in Saigon. Not only did these men and women brave the dangers of war; they also combated often obstructive military officers and disingenuous politicians to get their story and to report the truth as they saw it. Beginning with William Howard Russell's reports from Crimea, which mark the birth of war reportage, and ending on the battle lines in Bosnia, here is war -- what it looks like, what it means, and how it has been fought for 150 years.

                              5 out of 5 stars New Perspective.......2004-04-25

To be honest - I am writing this review half way through the book! This book is beautiful - it gives a totally new perspective on time, human consciousness and death. Hindu Philosophy says 'everything you see is an illusion', and this book brilliantly analyses that statement using statistics, math and quantum physics. Its not too technical, and its not too philosophical. I was somewhat familiar with Erwin Shrodinger's Cat in the box paradigm - but this book lends it new meaning and perspective. I am not sure if you can do this book any justice by rating it - death and consciousness are personal experiences, and any reviews of books about them are always prone to be tainted by personal beliefs - but this book was right in alignment with my thoughts about death. So if you are open minded - go for it - this book will definitely make you re-think life!

a powerful and eloquent work that valiantly attempts to bridge the gap between diverse subjects toward a unified theory to explain human consciousness.

The author boldly explores many different areas to provide the reader with profound insights and much seeding for future ideas.

                              A majestic accomplishment.

Here's a guy who spent a great deal of energy figuring out how to document the one-ness of all. Say what you will about the specifics, looking for one-ness is a noble task. I applaud Dr. Reanney's efforts, smarts and conclusions.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful and poignant.......2002-07-06

Darryl Reanney was already dead by the time I discovered his book. I read it on the inside back flap before I had even purchased it.

That fact I suppose set a curious mood for my reading of his work. But the spell of Reanney's poetic prose and erudite musings on the nature of time, space, consciousness and the possibility of immortality would have held no less power for me had I not known of his untimely death.

Reanney, an Australian molecular biologist, was a gifted writer able to combine compelling personal anecdote with insights from biology, physics, cosmology, philosophy, religion, literature, poetry and art into a dazzling narrative that searches ultimately for the answers to the 'big' questions: who are we? where did we come from? what is the meaning--if any--of consciousness?

Reanney wisely stops short of providing answers he could only invent, eschewing any overt or unsupported mysticism; yet he pursues the tantalizing clues that modern cosmology suggests we follow and makes poetry of it: we are the stuff of stars, truly made from dust--and in the sense that matter can never be destroyed but only converted into energy--eternal as those ancient stars.

I have rarely been so moved by a work of nonfiction; it is filled with insight and compassion and wonder.

So while those readers looking for pat explanations or easy comfortable conclusions would do better seeking out the quantum quackery of Deepak Chopra, this book was an awe-inspiring mind-expanding experience for me and will always have a place on my shelf.

For admirers of the work of David Darling, Paul Davies, et al... but superior, I think.
