Book Description
The external facades of a building are more than a protective mantle, or an intelligent skin regulating temperature and light, they also determine its very appearance. By unusual choices of materials and the use of complex technology, facades have become increasingly significant in recent years. External surfaces are being perceived as an integral part of the building and are therefore being designed as such. This volume focuses on the wide-ranging aspects of facade design, from the selection and use of materials to the advanced technical possibilities now open to the architect. A wide array of carefully selected international examples show the theory in the practice. All plans, details, and large scale sections of the facades have been researched with the high degree of competence typical of the editorial staff from the review Detail. Expert authors provide the essential information needed to plan and design facades and elucidate on the latest developments in technology and materials

In Detail Series sets a new standard for contemporary architecture.......2007-08-04
I cannot say enough about the quality of this entire series, and this book is among the best of the set. Few architecture books are of this high quality; one usually expects some level of editorial compromise; either we get lightweight analysis and documentation with beautiful photographs, or you get overly complex, teched out stuff that doesn't understand the fundamental concepts. Or it's just bad architecture. But this entire series, from the quality of the writing, the great beauty and clarity of the drawings, and finally to the aptness and excellence of the finished architecture; it represents the new state of the art. Buy the whole series, but start with this one and "Building Simply", which I'll rave about separately.
Amazing reference and read.......2007-07-27
A must have for all architects and those interested in how buildings come together and the importance the skin plays. As specially when trying new materials.
Spectacular buildings with unique sidings.......2007-03-11
There was a time when there was no question as to what the outside skin of a building was going to be, glass alternating with metal panels. Something monolithic looking like the UN building.
Now significant advances in materials, architectural design, creative use of conventional materials like shingles, concrete, or sprayed on foam are producing building where the skin becomes more than just what you see.
The book is organized into two main sections. The first third or so is used to describe the general changes that have been taking place in the general area of building skins.
The last two thirds show where various treatments have been used in actual buildings. The buildings vary from tiny, micro houses to athletic stadiums, stores to factories.
This is European publication. Most of the buildings are in Europe, with a few from Japan. They represent the most significant advances in design I have seen in a long time.
Great Book.......2007-02-22
Great examples of innovative building skins with good details.
Highly recommended for architects and architecture lovers.
very comprehensive usage of modern materials........2006-07-10
The book describes simple and neat building enclosure design in detail and palette. The book should be applicable to architects or designers who aspire to work in minimalism or modernism and who desire to improve the building enclosure design to be more insighfully creative and blight. Through the publication good samples are reviewed to support reader's imagination and to confirm the practicality of use.

Interesting and fun even for a crusty old artist.......2006-03-10
Watercolor for the Artistically Undiscovered has been a fun workbook for our whole family. My daughter received one for a gift and it was so entertaining we had to order two more so everyone could sit and do it together. The book's layout is in page by page exercises that might inspire further fun and thinking, as well as build on each other to create a more versatile way of looking at painting. In my opinion, the most fun part is being able to paint in a book and even cut out parts and glue them elsewhere. Kids have a chance to breakout from the usual parental mantra of "Be sure not to write in the book, watch out with the paint...". The pages are very sturdy and good quality and the author's sense of humour is wonderful. I have my very own copy to play in, which is sometimes just the thing to inspire me in my own work. And well, there is something about turning squiggles into bugs....
Great book.......2004-07-16
This is a great place to start. The paints and paper provided are 1st class quality allowing serious exploration, and the excerises are fun. Add a few more colors - dark green and light blue- and a extra, nicer brush, and there is no better way to start
If you are a beginner (like I am) get this book!.......2001-05-28
I am extremely intimidated by painting, so I took baby steps and bought this book. It comes with some beautiful watercolors that are rich and color--and a brush as well.
They start you off with painting some small pictures, even blobs if you are comfortable with it, and you will be amazed to see how much your lil paintings look like paintings instead of a piece of crap (which is what i expected---can i say crap?) anyway, they give you pages where you can "play" and you don't start color mixing and other frightening things until later.
Later on, you do landscapes and play around with some light and shadow. Its like the fisher price version of learning to paint!! Sometimes, my pictures blended in with their little pictures along the way, which made me happy. They just turn something very scary, into something a lil more easy.
If you run out of paints or brushes, or you want some more paper, there's a phone number in the back you can call to order some more!! I love klutz products, cause I am one!! Highly recommended!!
Scared of watercolors? Paint this book!.......1997-06-15
This fun, whimsical book takes the mystery and frustration out of painting with watercolors. Learn watercolor basics by following the book's simple instructions and then practicing alongside on its watercolor-paper pages. Witty sidebar commentator Thatcher Hurd adds humor to an otherwise indimidating process. Discover what makes you the best painter you know--paint this book and unmask your watercolor painting personality

beautiful black and white architectural photography.......2006-04-01
I am a fan of architectural photography and when I came across this book at the Hirshhorn, I couldn't leave without it. As other reviewers have stated, these are not your typical "tourist" shots of DC. This book features unique perspectives of architectural details you might normally miss. It has certainly become an inspiration for me to make more trips to the city with my camera!
Best Photo Book of Washington DC.......2006-02-09
Anyone who has grown weary of the typical DC monument pictures will love this book, with its gorgeous black-and-white photos of less commonly photographed buildings and places in DC. It's a sophisticated photo book of DC, one that you can give friends who actually live in DC and are tired of all the same old same old, or it makes a great gift for people visiting DC for the first time as well, or who have never been to DC. It's a DC photo book with a flair, the best one I've seen.
Fairly comprehensive.......2004-02-15
Gottlieb, a Washington lawyer turned full-time photographer, shares his love of our nation's capital with stirring photographs of the city. There are the classic pictures of the Mall and the famous monuments, along with less-photographed areas in surrounding parks and neighborhoods. By shooting at sunrise and after dark, from all angles and during all seasons, he successfully highlights many special features about his subjects. It's a worthy addition to any coffee table and may compel a trip to D.C. to see for yourself.
Pictures tell the story.......2004-02-07
This book is a book with pictures only. There is a short introductory essay by D.P. Moynihan about the history but the rest is pictures with no captions, these can be found in the back. The photo's are all black and white, which is fitting for a city in which nearly all the important buildings and monuments are white greek columns. Get it when you have been to DC, it looks good next to your own pictures.
absolutely beautiful!.......2002-04-23
Lovely photos of some common and some uncommon areas of the city, and the printer seemed to care about quality!
Book Description
Through Gottlieb's remarkable eye, Washington, D.C. is portrayed in all seasons, at all times of day, an din every sublte variation of light.

A Love Song.......2005-02-07
Mr. Gottlieb is one of the finest photographers our country has to offer! His portrait of Washington is a love song to our nation's capitol. The photographs are spectacular, accompanied by a personal, touching and sometimes humorous text. If one thinks they know Washington, this book is a must see through this photographer's eyes. If one has never visited our nation's capitol, this will be a personal journey through a beautiful city.

Book Description
The Nutz family will never be confused with the Waltons, the Partridges, or the Bradys. But you might confuse them with another family: your own. Soup To Nutz: The First Course is the first collection of comic strips featuring the off-kilter Nutz family, where the battle for the last chicken leg rivals the Battle of Bull Run and sibling "rivalry" is putting it mildly. The battling brood includes brothers Roy-boy and Andrews, their sister and middle child Babs, parents Roy and Pat, and their faithful dog Rosco. These six Nutz make up a family that is every bit as funny and screwball as their name implies. Roy-boy teases his younger brother by telling him that he became part of the family when they found him in the woods and adopted him. But his sister is quick to set the record straight: "Don't be silly, Andrew, you weren't adopted... Dad made you out of wood and a cricket turned you into a real boy." The irreverent humor of Nutz flows from the pencil of creator Rick Stromoski, whose research includes growing up the seventh member of a family of 12 children. That experience no doubt helped shape the humor behind what is one of the funniest up-and-coming strips on the funny pages today.
Customer Reviews:
a wonderful comic find.......2004-08-18
Soup to Nutz is the best comic strip I've ever read. The book is full of this wonderful comic find. I discovered it on a comics website months ago and have been reading it everyday since. The children are adorable, especially Andrew...the character designs are just so creative and refreshing. Very funny stuff, sometimes laugh out loud funny, sometimes worth a chuckle, the misadventures of the kids are always entertaining.
A strip that is suitable for the whole family and could probably be enjoyed by the adults as well as the kids. I am amazed at how anyone could make such a great comic each and every day. If you're a comic strip fan, or someone who has just started reading comics on a regular basis- this is one of the best out there, and you'll be glad you discovered it.
Every page a winner!.......2003-10-26
If you don't normally read the cartoon strips in the newspaper, Soup to Nutz is the very best of what you've been missing. I have yet to read a page of this book where at least one cartoon didn't leave me laughing out loud, desperatly finding others to share the hilarity with.
This by far is the best cartoon strip of the new century. Not only excellent family humor, but brilliant, subtle social and political commentary. Our local paper also carries Mallard Fillmore, and after enduring it's sledgehammer approach, Soup to Nutz is a tremendous breath of fresh air that even surpasses Doonesbury.
I anxiously await the second course!

This was truly an uplifting, heartwarming book. It made me laugh and cry as I could relate the author's true stories to my own life and marriage. This book is not just for couples struggling with infertility problems, but a must read for every woman. It was highly inspirational and rejuvenated my Faith-definitely a lily to me.

More Couture.......2007-02-18
I was looking for a book that had more information on couture. I have Susan Khalje and Claire Shaeffer's books and wanted more information on the fabulous world of couture. In this book I found history about couture as well as several articles on fit, fabric, and techniques. It has helped me increase my sewing skills.
A great sewing resource for aspiring couturiers.......2002-12-05
One of my favorite books. A fascinating combination of history and construction techniques, art and technology. If you've ever been curious about how Chanel constructed her famous boxy jackets (that were still flattering) or who did the embroidery for those amazing Schiaperelli creations - this is for you!
Book Description
The second volume in the Spearhead series focuses on the Grossdeutschland Division, the German Army's premier mechanized unit in World War II.. Each Spearhead title includes an evaluation of the units combat effectiveness as seen by the unit, its opponents and subsequent researchers, and a research section including a bibliography and a listing of museums, websites, re-enactment groups and memorials.
Customer Reviews:
Not Quite What I had Expected.......2006-08-07
I had seen this book around quite a while before breaking down and purchasing it. As many of you already know, the Spearhead series of books aren't cheap. So having shelled out the money for this volume, I was really a bit disappointed in the photographs and the overall flavor of the narrative.
The pictures are fine in a generalist sort of way, but if you purchase this volume for pictures solely of Grossdeutschland you will be disappointed. The same is true of the maps and much of the narrative. It's a nice look at the overall picture, but I had hoped for a more narrow GD focus.
There are some nice extras such as a listing of all GD Knights Cross Holders and some useful weblinks, but it's a little pricey for those two items.
So be wary when looking for your next GD photo history. While this is a fine book, it might not be what the more discerning student of GD is looking for.
Book Description
In the depths of the Polish countryside lies the little town of Raków (Racovia). Raków today shows few signs of its illustrious history as the chief center for progressive religious thinking in Europe.
Founded as a utopian community in 1569, by the early seventeenth century it had become "the Unitarian capital of Europe." Its academy attracted scholars and students from all over the Continent. Hundreds of books poured from its presses, including the famous Racovian Catechism, published four centuries ago and still in print to this day.
Though the Racovian experiment eventually fell victim to the forces of religious repression, the ripples arising from this little community have spread in ever-widening circles during the ensuing centuries, and their effects can still be seen today.

Book Description
Recent articles in the press have explored a possible link between cancer and such familiar sources of electromagnetic fields as power-distribution lines or electronic appliances. In this book a distinguished physicist evaluates the properties of low-frequency electromagnetic fields and their interactions with the human body and concludes that the health risks from these interactions have been vastly overstated.

Description:
Many epidemiological studies have investigated residential exposure to extremely-low-frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF) for children, but exposure at schools where children may stay up to 8 h every weekday was rarely considered. Between March and June 2004, we carried out a field study in Taipei City and County of northern Taiwan to explore ELF-MF exposure pattern among children at schools with high voltage transmission lines (HVTL) running through the campuses. One hundred and one children attending 14 schools with nearby HVTL (exposed group) and 123 children of 18 schools at least 100 m away from HVTL (unexposed group) were monitored for 24-hour personal ELF-MF exposure. Selected classrooms and playgrounds within the buffer regions (i.e., within 30 m of HVTL) and those away from the buffer regions were also assessed, using spot measurements, to determine the extent to which HVTL may contribute to the environmental exposure on campuses. Results show that the two groups didn't differ significantly for both mean exposure and proportion of exposure greater than 0.4 micro-Tesla (@mT) estimated for 24 h. However, we noted that 17.8% of the exposed children had a personal mean exposure greater than 0.4 @mT during school hours, significantly (p=0.011) higher than that (6.5%) estimated for the unexposed children. An even higher percentage (27.3%) was observed for 11 students with their classrooms intersecting the buffer regions. Playgrounds near buffer regions showed a significantly higher ELF-MF than the other areas of the exposed schools (0.70 vs 0.18 @mT, p=0.043). The study demonstrates a wide range of exposures to ELF-MF among school children at campuses adjacent to HVTL. Children attending the exposed schools may have a higher chance of experiencing a mean exposure greater than 0.4 @mT during school hours.

Customer Reviews:
Has anyone thought that this stuff could really come back to haunt us?.......2005-10-25
My wife bought this book for me at a library book sale a few months ago. She figured that I would be intrigued by the politics and history. She has no idea what I got from this book.
I would agree with the rest of the previous reviews. However, there was something else I thought about when I read through and came away with as I progressed from cover to cover: it is possible that this leviathan in which he lived in and worked at has not died, but is in hibernation until another "day". I remember hearing about this book and its author back in the '80's on 60 Minutes, but it wasn't until I read it that a certain retrospective perspective made me realize that such tyranny and domination can (and will) come back to put the world in fear -- no matter what country it is.
Had I read this in my teenage years, when it first came out, I would have become much more conservative then instead of being a center-left kid who grew out of that and acquired Winston Churchill's version of a brain. I would have come to understand just how much of an Achille's heal the UN is to the United States. It was absolutely astonishing (and nauseating) just how much money the US poured (and still pours) in to the United Nations with absolutely no "return on investment", only to watch other countries -- and the UN -- bite our hand which feeds them. Books like this only add to my conservative stance.
It's unfortunate that Mr Shevchenko is no longer around. I would have loved to hear his take on world affairs today.
Great book.......2005-07-05
Fascinating. I can't put it down. I agree with everything the other reviewers have said, but in addition I'd like to know what Mr. Shevcehnko thinks of what has happened in Russia since then.
A view from the inner circle.......2004-12-17
This book gives a fascinating look into the ideas and the functioning of the ruling class (Nomenklatura, KGB) and into Soviet daily life during the Brezhnev era in the USSR.
Foreign policy of the Nomenklatura was based on a long view: the idea of expanding Soviet power to the point of world domination.
The author doesn't agree with the German politician Helmut Schmidt who considered that the goals of the Soviet leaders were a mere continuation of historical Russian imperialist designs. On the contrary, they were deeply ideological. The rulers believed in the inevitable victory of Soviet-style socialism.
The author gives also an excellent analysis of the evolution of the Sino-Russian relations as well as an in depth portrait of the diplomat Andrei Gromyko.
Concerning home policy, the author agrees with B. Souvarine that the fall of Khrushchev was provoked by his plan to reshuffle the senior party apparatus, in other words 'the sanctum of the ruling class'. He didn't have the power to liquidate them like Stalin and was himself liquidated.
In Soviet daily life 'watergates' were permanent features from top to bottom. 'Bugging, taping, intimidation, bribery, lying, cover-ups were all standard measures taken by the KGB with the leadership's blessing.'
At the top, medical assassinations could not be excluded (Maxim Gorky, Zhdanov and others).
This book contains also excellent information on some important historical events like the murder of the Egyptian president Sadat or of UN secretary Dag Hammarskjold.
It is not a secret anymore that foreign leaders who wanted to meet Brezhnev had to formulate their questions in advance. During the meeting, Brezhnev read his answers from a paper prepared by his administration.
A popular joke about him is mentioned in this book: 'A Soviet citizen shouted 'Brezhnev is an idiot'. He was promptly sentenced to 15 days in jail for insulting Brezhnev, and to 15 years at hard labor for divulging a state secret.'
Shevchenko's book gives a magisterial look into the workings of a totalitarian state dominated by a small ruling class. A must for historians and all people interested in 20th century history.
One of the Best of the Type.......2002-04-07
This is a good book that has some very interesting points that just keep coming back to haunt the American Presidents. Substitute the USSR with Islamic Fundamentalists. There are a good deal of tradecraft details in the book and a number of reviews of operations run against the US. This book reads well, and if you are a fan of cold war personalities then you should find a copy of this book. It is one of the better books to come from the group of defectors that all seem to get a book deal roughly 25 minutes after they enter the states.
The Most Important, Highest-Ranking Soviet Defector Ever.......2000-11-30
Arkady N. Shevchenko was the highest-ranking Soviet defector ever: he was Under Secretary-General of the United Nations at the time. Moreover, his book was a sensational number one best seller, highly acclaimed throughout the media, and even serialized in Time Magazine.
Sadly, the same liberals who were praising Shevchenko didn't seem to be reading what he'd written.
Shevchenko wrote a real-life spy thriller, as good as any fiction available; but he also delivered an extremely timely warning. The Soviet Union was dangerous, he said, bent on world conquest, sooner rather than later. It was fully willing to fight a nuclear war, or a conventional war, or any kind of war that would advance its "inevitable" victory. It was corrupt, its economy was failing, its leaders were desperate. A West which was not both resolute and strong would be annihilated, sooner or later, probably sooner.
In 1984 and 1985, conservatives believed those things already, while liberals believed that even the mention of such was at best mindless palaver, at worst reckless war-mongering. Five years later, as glasnost and the fall of the Soviet Union opened the "evil empire's" archives, it became clear that everything Shevchenko (and Reagan) had said was true (or even less severe in some cases than might have been warranted). Yet though the Left refused to hear the message, they could not ignore the stature of the messenger, and Shevchenko had his day in the sun, as well as his reward for his service to the cause of freedom: freedom not merely for our people, but for his own.
While this book may be hard to find, it is well worth the hunt. Shevchenko's testimony is vital to a solid understanding of the latter years of the Cold War, and his story-telling is riveting. Don't miss either.
