great ideas - wonderful book to dream with.......2001-05-23

Loved all the idea's and variety this book provided. For anyone planning an adventure in log home construction and living, this book is a true inspiration. Thanks for access to so many creative expressions by homeowners and builders, and for another wonderful log home experience.

Disappointing.......2001-03-09

The interiors are not the quality I had hoped for.And an entire book of log home interiors became too much for my eye in the end. I have bought several second home books recently, and my favorite remains a new book called Second Home, which shows not only log and timberframe homes but airy beach cottages, cabins in the woods, lake homes, and every other style one can imagine.

There seem to be two types of log home owners. First, there are the owners with an unlimited budget who hire archetects, interior designers, and lighting specialists who build and furnish the home immediately ready for "Archetectual Digest." Then, there is the rest of us.

This book offers superb ideas, hints, and warnings for both groups. In my case, the log home we are renovating was roughly built and poorly maintained. However, the price was right and the home had, as they say, potential.

The potential and decoration was also going to have to match our lifelong possessions. After three decades of marrage, dozens of moves, and time in Europe and Asia, our furniture was certainly eclectic. We were not about to have a giant yard sale and start over. Cindy Thiede's book on decorating help us in many ways.

Most importantly, she gives specific ideas and pictures that can help log home owners regardless of their problems or budget. In our case, there was the perfect answer to an problem we were having with an addition. Additionally, we found a picture of the exect rock fireplace we were seeking. In each case, we marked the book and told the subcontractor that this was what we wanted.

Finally, the author offers highlighted tips, facts, and web sites to help you through your decorating and renovation problems. The book concludes with a resource directory that cross-references pictures and ideas with the specific archetect, designer, or retailer.

In summary, if you building, renovating or decorating a log home, this book will help you in many countless ways.

I got the information that I needed to get started on stain glass creation, it is a very basic book. It is easy to understand and has step by step instructions for both copper foil and lead techniques and supply lists for both!

This is an excellent tutorial book. A very good option for the beginners that need "how to" in making stained glass projects. Excellent pictures by Alan Wycheck.

Must Have For Stained Glass Beginners.......2007-06-19

This book comes ring bound with a sturdy cover which makes it easy to keep open while working or just reading easily. It is very detailed and has great pictures showing each step. It explains very well from enviroment, tools, glass, techniques and a few example projects. It is overall a high quality book and is extremely organized and informative. A must have for anyone wanting to get off to a good start in stained glass.

I have bought at least 10 books on how to do Stained Galss. Sure wish I had bought this one first!! It is by far the very best how-to book I have found for this subject. It is well written and the photographs are clear and well done. It has this awesome binding that covers the spiral binding. I for one think All craft books should be bound this way. It lies flat on the table with out you having to find a stand to put it in so you can have it open while you work. It takes you step by step through the projects with lots of photographs to help you along. Being a visual learner this is perfect for me. There is also another book by the same author called Beyond Basic Stained Glass Making and I'm on my way to buy that book also, as soon as I finish writting thie review. The only problem with this,and many others, is that it doesn't tell you how to resize a pattern. But if you have a Kinko's or Office Max near you this is not a problem. They can enlarge your patterns for you. For me I have to find a differant solution because I don't have anything like that near me. I did find a program that will do it for you and will tile the pages so you can tape them together, but haven't tried that out yet so I can't say how it works. Ok, now I'm done and I'm off to buy the second book for myself. I hope everyone has a Great Day!!

This book is well researched and well written. Each chapter covers everything that you need to know from lenses to film. Giving examples of shots taken with a particular lens to film speeds and types. When to use a slower film or when to use a filter.

After a nice camera if you have any money to spend on photography - this is it! With more than a dozen pros guiding you on most vital of things in photography what else can you ask for!!!

It makes a very easy read, even fine things are explained in very simple way, with excellent pix as examples. Best thing is that experts talk abt all the things like lens basics, depth of feild, metering, filters, B&W pix, fashion photography and even abt business side of photography.

After going thru various topices of this book quality of my pix has improved many-folds. If you go thru a topic and try it on the field, results would be IMMED!!

I have a digital camera and before reading this book I always relied on the camera and operated it in all auto mode! Not anymore, now I'm deciding everything abt the picture. Feels great.

Great compilation, worth its price. A MUST.

An inspiring work.......2001-03-31

This book will inspire you to THINK as you look through the viewfinder. All too often, books in this category spend far too much time on the basics and go no further than that. This book not only covers most of the basics, it prods you to do more than just get the exposure right or the focus sharp. Chapters are titled "Film" or "Exposure" to let you know they cover basic topics, and then chapters like "Composition" or "Outdoor Photography" challenge you to do more with the camera.

The drawbacks? The book has a couple. If you're not into B&W photography or slide film several of the books sections and photographs will leave you cold. The other main "distraction" is also a benefit; it's written by multiple authors with multiple (and sometimes conflicting) points of view. Be prepared to read a "do this" suggestion on one page and then five pages later read a "don't do this" suggestion for the same thing!

All in all, a worthy addition to your bookshelf.

Great Balance!.......2001-02-03

I found this book to be a great balance between technical and visual content! If you're tired of "point the camera at the subject" primers and bored with "see how good my pictures are" albums, this one might be for you.

It covers the basics thoroughly, but goes beyond the basics. Did you know one brand of slide film gets better saturation in red-yellow while another gets better saturation in green-blue?

The pictures are fascinating, and the aurthor explains the specific applications of basic principles that went into them!

This book is the book you want to read for the best handling of all topics relating to photography. Here I found great descriptions of terminology that I have puzzled about for months, but could not get answers to. This book will improve your photography whether you are just starting or have been shooting for years.

Should be Better.......2001-11-06

This book was put together in order to fund the defence of cartoonist Danny Hellman whose freedom of speech is being attacked by the subject of a harmless satirical e-mail (cartoonist Ted Rall) via a $1.5 million libel suit. Hellman created his satirical e-mail as a response to Ted Rall's accusations, published in the Villiage Voice, that Art Spiegleman is some sort of dictator who controls the cartooning industry in New York (apparently Rall reserves greater freedom of speech for himself).

Considering that the contributers include Doug Allen, Gary Leib, Sam Henderson, Johnny Ryan, Michael Kupperman (AKA P. Revess) etc. (see above for some more impressive names), this anthology should be a lot better than it actually is. Unfortunately, much of the book is taken up by reprints from publications that are likely already owned by anyone interested in this book. The Allen and Leib work is mostly reprinted from Idiotland, the Doucet is from Idiotland and Dirty Plotte, most of the Millionaire is from Dirty Stories Vol. II, etc. Also, most of these reprints are not even the various artists' stronger works. As for the new stuff, when it isn't taking (often funny) stabs at Ted Rall, it tends to be lightweight and silly. For example, James Kolchalka has a series of useless one page stories about a frog getting an erection while looking at various inanimate objects (like a phone), and many others are dumb stories about "Dirty" Danny Hellman playing (neither real nor realistic) pranks. Thus most of the strips by, e.g., Sam Henderson (normally a hillarious cartoonist) are just plain stupid.

There is enough standout material (e.g. Michael Kupperman's strips (although for some reaons they print one of his really short strips twice) and Johnny Ryan's) and it is for a good enough cause that it is definitely still worth getting, but most fans of its fantastic lineup will be disappointed. Ultimately, this book reminds me of one of the Small Press Expo's annual anthologies: thick and worthwhile, but still very hit and miss.

A helpful and quick read.......2007-03-11

We used this book for our book club. It had practical ideas and was the guide for creating a simple information booklet to help parents work with their children.

NOT for dyslexic children.......2004-04-01

I think this book was originally called "How to Teach Your Child to Read" (or, probably, "How I, Bernice Baumer the Great, Taught Your Poor Neglected Child to Read"). The "information" consists of a number of chapters that read like testimonials to her "method." The method, once revealed, has little or nothing to do with Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, or any other MSL technique. The method could in fact be very damaging to children who actually do have dyslexia. The author's attitude could be very damaging to parental confidence, since the author doesn't seem to recognise that dyslexia is any different from a "slow" reader, and posits that dyslexia can be cured in a few "simple" steps. As any parent of a dyslexic child knows, dyslexia is a lifelong disability that can be corrected and dealt with to some extent, but that will never be "cured" or go away entirely.

Best, Most Useful Book Purchased for tutoring a Dyslexic!!.......2002-04-30

I am tutoring a 7th grader, apparently dyslexic, who has never been taught how to read or given any individual help. At the beginning I was clueless how to improve his reading skills, and was puzzled by the many mistakes he made in decoding. After receiving this book in the mail, I began to understand his problems better, and better yet - how to remedy them! He has since passed his required state reading test (3rd grade level) and is reading in most cases at a 4th grade level, a jump of 4 grades since November. Many thanks to the author, and Amazon for giving me the opportunity to buy it used from the Marketplace, which is the only way I could afford it.

The First Book on Dyslexia to be read by Parents.......1998-07-08

As a parent of a dyslexic child, I've read most of the recommended books on the subject. Of all of them, this is the first one I would recommend to parents who have realized that their child is dyslexic.

The author presents most of the classical techniques in dealing with the dyslexic learning style in an exceptionally clear, concise, and very human style. She uses as a vehicle to do this her own experience in teaching dyslexic children and young adults. After using these techniques with my own daughter, I can say that many are quite helpful.

In the course of describing the learning-to-read process with dyslexic kids, the author also brings some practical thinking to the "phonics vs. whole-word" reading debate. She explains the necessity of phonics for word-attack skills in non-intuitive readers as well as the ultimate necessity of whole-word reading in order to establish fluency and comprehension.

At the end of the book she provides most-used word-lists, phonics charts, writing charts, and pictures. She tells you how to use these materials in applying the techniques previously described.

This book is not revolutionary nor does it promise a panacea for all the issues surrounding the dyslexic learning style. But, I recommend that you make it your first of several on this complex subject.

a good beginning for parents who want to help their dyslexic.......1998-02-13

The book describes "how to" approaches to work with a dyslexic child at home. What the author suggests does not conflict with methodology that might be used in the classroom, but rather it complements any specialized, commercialized multisensory approach used at school. When parents of actual elementary dyslexic students viewed the book, they could actually understand what the author suggested doing. Various activities suggested by the author could be prepared and conducted by parents in a few minutes per day. It's a book well worth reading, by both teachers and parents of dyslexic students.

Still the best introduction to the auxiliary units........2000-08-17

Cheesman's book on the auxiliary soldiers of the Roman army was originaly published in 1914. At the time, little was known about these non-citizen soldiers who fought alongside the men of the Roman legions, and the book was rightly hailed as a breakthrough in Roman army studies. Eighty-six years later, this study is still the best introduction to the topic, and most of Cheesman's ideas about the development of the auxiliary units from a series of ad-hoc levies to regular and permanent formations, have stood up well in the face of more recent scholarship (most notably P.A. Holder's "Studies in the Auxilia of the Roman Army", and D.B. Saddington's "The Development of the Roman Auxiliary Forces"). Although the information on individual auxiliary units contained in the appendices has been rendered outdated through the accretion of evidence since the writing of the book, it continues to hold its position as one of the cannonical works in the study of the non-citizen units of the Roman army. Cheesman's clear and lucid style, and his insightful analysis of the topic, makes this a useful book for both specialists and non-specialists alike. I heartily recomend it to anyone with an interest in the Roman military.

Magnificent visual tour of the microscopic world.......1997-12-09

After several hours curled up with "Under the Microscope" at my local library, I ran back to amazon.com to order my own copy. How sorry I was to discover that this beautiful volume is currently out of print.

Filled with gorgeous color and black and white photographs, "Under the Microscope" (originally titled "Microcosmos") is a visual tour de force revealing microscopic wonders from the plant, animal, and mineral kingdoms. Images include those produced with conventional light, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopes, and also special optical arrangments such as phase contrast, polarized, and Nomarski (Differential Interference Contrast) illumination.

Each illustration is thoroughly annotated with excellent, brief descriptions of the biological or phyhsical phenomenon shown, as well as the technique used to produce the image. There is also a highly readable section at the end about the history and technology of microscopy in all its varied forms.

A total treat!
