Printmaking in the Sun introduces a revolutionary new printmaking technique known as the solarplate method, first developed in 1972 by one of the book's authors, Dan Welden. He had begun experimenting with light-sensitive polymer plates in place of traditional metal plates, which frees the artist from exposure to poisonous lead fumes. To make a solarplate print, one creates a piece of artwork on film, overlays it on a solarplate, and exposes the film and plate together in the sun. The drawing is transferred to the plate, which is then developed in ordinary tap water. The resulting image appears in the same orientation as the original drawing. This book exhaustively covers the techniques of solarplate printing, describing how to use the proper equipment and materials, prepare relief and intaglio images, make and print relief and intaglio plates, expose your work to the sun, use digital images and photogravure, and work with color printing. My over-riding impression after having just put this book down is "Why can't all How-to art books be of this quality?". Along with printing I also dabble with oils, watercolours, acrylics, pen and ink, and charcoal. As a self taught artist i find books to be a major source of my knowledge. With 250 art related books littering my shelves Welden's book is top of the pile. It is superbly written, passing on valuable knowledge of use to both the beginner and the more experienced printmaker. His co-author Pauline Muir is a trained scientist and maybe she's the reason for the straight-to-the-point approach as opposed to the fluff that litters so many other art books. Welden opens with an overview of the chemical mechanisms involved in the solarprint process. And then moves on to the details of what type of plate to buy, cutting, storing, exposure, materials etc. The relief and intaglio processes are covered next, in depth from creating the intial image through to printing the plates. Digital imaging, photogravure and various approaches for colour printing follow. Numerous tips are presented. An extensive list of eqpt suppliers is also provided. The book is well illustrated throughout and printed on good quality paper. Another excellent book from Watson & Guptill. Absolutely 100% recommended for anyone interested in the solarplate method.

Great book. He covers all the material in depth but manages to keep it easy to follow for the novice printmaker with clear, well illustrated, step by step instructions. The process of printmaking is much more enjoyable without having to deal with acids, fumes and the related health issues.

Welden created the solar plate technique, and it's clearly today's smart way to make fine art prints. No acid, no fumes, no health issues. Solar plates are developed in plain water, and produce top quality images. The authors' (Weldon's co-author is Aussie artist Pauline Muir) instructions are clear, direct, and succinct. A practical guide for both novices and seasoned printmakers. Welden is a top-notch artist and printmaker, and his is the only book yet available on this advanced printmaking methodology.

Beautiful.......2002-05-27

I picked up this little gem in the library and was instantly captivated by the beauty of Ticeýs photography. Adorned in black and white, Tice depicts wonderful images of America, with a few images of Yorkshire and Esonia as well. Time seems to stand still in the photos, and one can just gaze and ponder and get lost. Another aspect of his work, which really appeals to me, was that I wanted to reach out and touch almost all of the photos. The texture contained in most of the photos, is just incredible.

The majority of the photos were shot in his native state of New Jersey, and one can get a feel for the complexity of the images presented, from the bounty of nature to the scenes of industrialism. Tice seems to capture the essence of the people he photographs, as well as showing us the beauty in nature and all around us.

A wonderful collection of glimpses of different parts of America from 1953 to 1999. A little gem of a book!

Maitena is an Argentinian cartoonist whose cartoons center on women, relationships and life in general. Her cartoons are fun, but also food for thought, sometimes.

If you are a woman and you happen to buy this book, you will laugh quite loudly several times, because you'll realise that you aren't alone, and that many others share your likes/dislikes, habits and peculiarities. We live in different countries, but we are first and foremost women :)

If you are a man, you'll have the opportunity of at least beginning to understand some of those many things that women do and just don't make sense in your humble opinion. Of course, Maitena's cartoons don't explain women and their points of view (I don't think anything can), but they might shed some lights on some of our idiosyncrasies.

Maitena says that "Women are not all the same, but the same things happen to us". If you want to know more about those "things that happen to us", or laugh a lot, read this compilation of cartoons. I highly recommend it to you :)

Cris Mazza skillfully blends her stories with elements of black humor and heart breaking humility. In "Is It Sexual Harassment Yet?" Mazza demonstrates why she is one of America's best female voices in fiction. From "In six short lessons." Where she tells the story of a battered spouse, and how this relates to her as a dog trainer. The story lines cris-cross between humor and sadness, sometimes within the same sentence. Cris breathes life into all her characters, and you can't help but to feel for them. Cris Mazza as a story teller is strangely unique. Her experiments of with point-of-view and layout are simply stunning at times. In the title story, Mazza tells the tale of a rape through the view point of two seemingly un-reliable narrators. Leaving it to the reader to decide who is telling the truth and who is lying. Through out this collection of short fiction Mazza explores the often hidden elements of relationships. We slowly get the sense of who Mazza is as a female writer, and a sense of ourselves in all her characters. Her views, at time feminist, but often even more so, they represent real women. Over all this book is a nice start to further reading.

I was compelled to write this review on the desire to offset the completely unthinkable nonsense first review. Mazza is simply one of the best writers out there; her novels and collections are relentless in their ambition and success. Buy this book, you will not regret it, and check out Former Virgin and the new novel Girl Beside Him, also.

I loved this book! Mazza uses point of view to create sympathies with characters who are the cause of the conflict. This book looks beyond the political ramifications of sexual harrassment and explores some of the unlikely human reactions to the disfunctional relationships we all end up in at some point.

A Must Read.......2006-05-25

As a political scientist interested in Angola I find myself caught-up in detailing battles, troop movements, political parties and leaders, etc. Upon reading this excellent book by two people, Doctors Without Borders vounteers) who spent time in Kuito, Angola I was stunned to realize that I often forget the human cost of warfare. Anyone who reads this book will get a gripping reminder, some with pictures, as to what a bullet or landmine can do to a human body. These brave people volunteered their time to work in conditions so primitive that one is in awe that they saved anyone at all. Yet, in this war torn city they performed miracles on a daily basis. The next time I read about injuries and casualties in warfare, this book will remind me that it is more than a word. It denotes human suffering that few of us can imagine. The authors do a good job of telling their story without being too judgmental of the government and rebels. As with many nations in the world, the people of Angola deserve our humanitarian aid, respect as human beings, and our prayers. An excellent book, buy it!

You must read this book!.......2005-04-19

This book provides a deeply moving portrait of the authors' time in Angola, working with MSF. They describe the most distressing work under difficult circumstances, in a country I knew little about. The book is written in an honest and sincere tone, which effectively expresses the enormous human tragedy. The sterling work done by the authors and other volunteers is presented in an unassuming way, but I am in awe of what they have done.
You must read this book. You will cry, you will sit up half the night to finish it and you will realise how fortunate we are - but you will not forget those who died in Angola.
