This elegant tome beautifully tells us how to think through design in all it's aspects from color to shape, form and texture. It is not only visually stunning, but a very worthwhile read. Love his drawings as inspirations.
An Exuberance of Color.......2007-05-26
The images in Jamie Drake's New American Glamour are fabulous. I have been fortunate enough to be in one of his rooms. I particular like the fact the he included a lot of colored sketches of his ideas for rooms and then we get to see the finished room. This is a fabulous picture book for interior inspirations.

Jamie isn't fond of beige or bland interiors and it shows in this new book. Very well executed and photographed. The cover is made of vinyl in a shagreen look. Very nice. I wish more publishers would do this.
Hollywood Decorating.......2005-11-13
The Orlando Sentinel called this "a study of sophisticated style with touches of what we see as Hollywood Glam." Think gold and satin and curves. I like adding a few glamour touches to a room, but guess I'm not ready to redecorate the whole house like a Hollywood scene. If you like oversized accessories and bright colors, this is the book for you.

Truly a most wonderful book ........2006-11-05
As a recent beginner to painting I have found it difficult to find a suitable subject to paint and have suffered from the "White Paper" syndrome on many occasions. After studying "14 Formulas for Painting Fabulous Landscapes" I am enjoying my new found ability to construct a painting by composition, rather than trying to find a scene that suits. I have been making "photographs", not paintings, but that has now stopped, thanks to Barbara Nuss and her wonderful book of design and composition.
As I am fairly new to oils, having painted in watercolour for a while, I
was especially attracted to this book by the stunning paintings I saw when I first opened it.
I just hope that one day I can produce work like hers, as every painting in this book is absolutely beautiful.
Highly recommend it for beginners and experts alike.
Excellent Advice on Landscape Painting.......2006-05-04
I was somewhat surprised with this book as I don't usually care for the X number of steps for a perfect life type books. However, Barbara Nuss has some very good advice for the beginner and intermediate landscape painter, and even for the advanced painter. She actually does list 14 "formulas" or, as I'd classify, compositions, of landscape painting. Each formula is addressed with samples and step-by-step demonstrations. Some of these are addressed in other books (see my review on Edgar Alwin Payne). However, I think the greatest value in Ms. Nuss' advice is how she gives the viewer confidence to change things. If you don't like the actual landscape in front of you, change it! Ha! How simple is that? But most artists are so consumed with the idea of depicting things exactly as they see them, that they forget that they are the creator and can change the landscape to make a stronger composition and a stronger painting. Most outdoor painters will find value in this book. I will add that Ms. Nuss' oil paintings are much stronger than her watercolor paintngs. If you are looking for W/C, then perhaps another book would suit you better.
A Must-Have for Landscape Artists!.......2004-04-01
"Formulas" is such an unfortunate word to put on anything creative. Disregard it. This book is a treasure!
NOT ONLY does it break composition down into 14 loose suggestions that will help you organize your paintings and bring your viewers into them, BUT it also tells you what to pack for plein air sketching, how to photograph the setting once you're there, and how to simplify, simplify, simplify and rearrange what it is you see so it will translate onto the canvas.
Landscape painting isn't about painting what you see. That's why God created cameras. A painting instructor once told me: "You don't paint a tree; you paint a symbol of a tree." Therein lies all the difference in the world, and Barbara goes into the same thing from a slightly different direction here. LIGHTBULB MOMENTS ABOUND!
In addition, there's Barbara's paintings on display. Though she paints more realistically than I do, I would still turn the pages and say, "Oh!" because it's gorgeous stuff.
And she shows you how you can do gorgeous stuff, too. Thank you, Barbara Nuss!!!!

Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) was perhaps the most notorious white patron of the arts of black America, particularly during the Harlem Renaissance. In 1932, he gave up a career as a theater critic and a novelist of light fiction to become a full-time amateur photographer. His photographs of the era's celebrated African American cultural figures are well-known, but until recently his private, homoerotic interracial photographs were sealed in an archive.
Author James Smalls considers how these images relate to Van Vechten's public persona and private desires. He discusses the interracial photographs in the context of white privilege and exotic tourism, primitivism's relation to modernism, camp sensibility and theatricality, and the vibrancy of underground gay visual culture during periods of political oppression. He also considers contemporary viewers' conflicting responses to the eroticized black male body in Van Vechten's and later twentieth-century photography. As a photographer, Carl Van Vechten was no great shakes. The author seems to realize this, and pads the somewhat thin photo selection with works by Mappelthorpe and others. The book's text is dull and uninteresting.

. . .when you first open this book. Be especially careful not to
eat or drink as danger of choking during a laugh spasm increases.
Also, if you find yourself cutting cartoons out of this book to
send (pointedly) to friends, try not to cut yourself. In fact,
sharp instruments aren't such a good idea either, so maybe it's
best to just send them their own copies which are, heaven
knows, cheap enough.
What makes Callahan so ridiculously funny is that he apparently
spends a lot of time thinking and not very much drawing. What
he thinks about are things like dogs reserving their seats in
the movies by urinating around them, the exotic dancer vomiting
up cake at the bulimia convention and of course the sherrif's
posse that finds the fugitive's abandoned wheel chair in the desert
and is told 'don't worry, he won't get far on foot'.
The best way to use this book is to leave it in the bathroom
when you have guests and listen for the howls of laughter
followed by the gasping sounds as your company struggles to
catch its breath.

I've shown this book to many friends. Watching as they look through it, I have yet to find one person who does not laugh out loud, usually within the first few pages, and then it gets louder. Callahan spoofs holy cows others dare not touch.
Vulgar, grotesque, and hilarious!.......2002-06-10
"Do Not Disturb Any Further" is a collection of one-panel cartoons by John Callahan. In a cover blurb, "Far Side" cartoonist Gary Larson says of Callahan, "[H]e makes my own work look normal."
Callahan may be the ultimate politically incorrect cartoonist. Nothing is taboo in this book. He mines humor from the following subject matter: AIDS, blindness, obesity, hell, baldness, suicide, anal sex, eating disorders, demonic possession, crucifixion, homelessness, and evolution, among others.
Callahan's subject matter is well served by his ultra-crude drawing style. His grotesque human figures are ugly and misshapen (but oddly endearing!).
I'll describe two typical cartoons from this book. A female Grim Reaper, accompanied by two Reaper children, encounters a man giving away free puppies. The little Reapers excitedly ask, "Mommy! Mommy! Can we kill the puppies?" In another equally warped cartoon, a man is confronting his topless wife, one of whose breasts has been replaced by a pirate hook. He exclaims, "You're going back to that surgeon and demanding a more attractive prosthetic device!"
Is Callahan the most depraved and offensive cartoonist of all time? I don't know, but I do think he's one of the funniest. If you've got a strong stomach and a thick skin, enjoy!

John Callahan is nothing shy of brilliant. The title "Digesting the Child Within" demonstrates in itself the amazing sense of humor of the author. He has the keen ability to take issues and situations that seem humorless, and with his witt, make them really funny. Not unlike Larson he has the remarkable ability to think of the most absurd things and makes them hysterical. Everyone I have shown his books to has enjoyed them. Bar none.

This is a great story and I had to read the book from cover to cover. It's funny, insightful and shows just what it is that a real fan goes through. I had tears in my eyes from the despcriptive narrative and it also had me crying with laughter. Very funny indeed. Go buy it if you're a true fan.

I loved this account, and felt I was right there with the writer. Anyone who has stood on the terraces, especially ManU fans, should read this book. A funny, emotional, graphic record of this 'love-struck' guy for his team, even when they were at rock bottom. I couldn't leave this book, and will read it again before too long.

Good read, but..........2001-04-17
I am a medical student/researcher with plans to become a cardiac surgeon or cardiologist. I enjoyed learning some of the history of the Cleveland Clinic and am personally involved in some of the new developments that the author mentioned in the last chapter. My only problem is that the book was not representative of american cardiology or cardiac surgery as a whole. It seems that the author did all of his research in Ohio and the Northeast, whereas significant advances have taken place in other parts of the country (U. of Alabama, Mayo, Texas Medical Center). Two of the most famous cardiac surgeons the world has known - Michael Debakey and Denton Cooley were only mentioned in a few short sentences. The reader gets the impression that some less important surgeons (that happen to work at the Cleveland Clinic) invented cardiac bypass surgery when it was actually the work of hundreds. In the last chapter, the author mentions a technique called OCT. Yes, this technique shows promise (I work with it) but it was only mentioned because someone at Harvard is working on it. I can think of 10 examples of techniques that show as much promise. I wish writers that wanted to tell the world about American medicine would search all of America before they sat down to write. In sum, it was readable but had some holes that made me feel incomplete after I read it.

Stephen Klaidman has provided us with a very interesting, easy reading book that I recommend to anyone who has a heart condition or is interested in the subject. The major portion of the book discloses chronologically how heart conditions were treated from its earliest practitioners to the present day. Biographical sketches of medical developers, practitioners, entrepreneurs, etc. provide human interest to the emerging history.
All major surgical developments, most of which occurred in the twentieth century, are explained in detail. The struggles of medical pioneers to gain acceptance of what at the time were radical innovations are amply explored. Among these innovations are angiography (imaging technology), heart-lung machine, coronary bypass surgery (with and without the heart-lung machine), angioplasty, and minimally invasive bypass surgery.
Hi-tech heart surgery-an extremely complex and difficult subject-is explained for the layman to understand. The benefits and problems of each of the current procedures are explained.
Klaidman explores hi-tech surgical instruments, a highly profitable multi-billion dollar business. His biographical profiles of some developers (doctor-engineer-inventors) and entrepreneurs disclose how the competitive race of developers to market first and the rivalry of entrepreneurs for market share may be detrimental to the best interests of patients.
None of the many present sophisticated treatments provide a cure! They just alleviate symptoms. The pioneers of today are searching for cures. Their approaches are described and are not only fascinating but also innovative.
The final chapter discusses the ethical questions raised by our current medical system: conflicts of interest between practitioners with financial stakes in various treatments; competition between advocates of various treatment options; competition between various surgical equipment manufacturers for market share; the pressure to reduce costs by HMOs; etc.
If there is one fault to the book, it is that the title "Saving the Heart: The Battle to Conquer Coronary Disease" led me to believe that it would be more comprehensive. The drugs-nitroglycerin, Coumadin, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, statins--were mentioned only as they pertained to a topic then being explored, not in the detail the surgical treatments were given. Not even mentioned are life style changes--diet, exercise and meditation--that Dean Ornish has proposed. A book on these topics written as well as this one would definitely be welcomed.
But for what this book does it does it so well a five star rating is most appropriate.

Accessible work--but not his masterpiece..........2006-08-01
McBride's "The Emma Gees" is a solid work which is engaging and accessible and has the unmistakable gritty texture of authenticity. There is no doubt that McBride 'went there' and 'did that' and, even more remarkably, loved nearly every minute of it. The book briefly details his personal voyage to become a Canadian infantryman in the Great War, touches lightly on his training, and then concentrates on his experiences in the trenches as a machine gunner and occasional sniper. The book's length, large type, and generous margins make a short and easy read--though the horrific details are often hard to take.
However, the book is essentially a slimmed down 'first' version of McBride's true masterpiece "A Rifleman Went To War", and nearly everything in The Emma Gees was later expanded and enhanced for inclusion in that second book. If you're only going to read one of McBride's books then read the other one. If you've already read that one and you're looking for more of the same (and after all, who wouldn't be?) then this book makes a nice follow-up companion.
One notable topic of this book which was not completely included in the second book details McBride's slow but steady decline into war-weariness. Although his second book does somewhat touch on this, it does not use the same frank language used here.
This edition of the book also includes a several-page biography of McBride which was, for this reader, enormously helpful.
A definitive work on Machine Guns and Snipers in WW I........1998-12-31
This book is a copy of H.W. McBride's lecture notes as he toured after the war. He is somtimes rare, but this makes the book more alive. It is not a publishers dream for read-ability and flow of chronological events, but it give very graphic first-hand experience in WW I trench warfare. The authors experience as a machine gunner, machine gun section leader, sniper and sniper section leader helps the reader visualize the horror of trench warfare. The author is sometime funny and light which is not misplaced amidst the terrible experience he and his fellow veterans lived in the trenches. The definitive work on machine-gunnery and sniping in the First World War. The U.S. Marine Corps Sniper School has made this book mandatory reading for its would-be snipers along with Carlos Hathcock. The tactical view in this book is fresh compared to most of the writing about warfare, which is normally more strategic in nature. Down and dirty, to borrow a phrase.

The Cheyennes played a vital role in an intricate and expanding barter system that connected tribes with each other and with whites. Joseph Jablow follows the Cheyennes, who by the beginning of the nineteenth century had migrated westward from their villages in present-day Minnesota into the heart of the Great Plains. Formerly horticulturists, they became nomadic hunters on horseback and, gradually, middlemen for the exchange of commodities between whites and Indian tribes.
Jablow shows the effect that trading had on the lives of the Indians and outlines the tribal antagonisms that arose from the trading. He explains why the Cheyennes and the Kiowas, Comanches, and Prairie Apaches made peace among themselves in 1840. This book is great for a student or a practicing engineer. It starts with the fundamentals of polymer science and ends with more specific processing problems. There are design problems at the end of each chapter for which solutions are not provided. This is great for a college textbook, but is not very useful for the practicing engineer. Overall, this book is well worth it.
