Finally, some recognition..........2005-01-11
Although the greatness of Rob't. Williams has been admitted by a few so-called "legitimate" art critics, it's high time to admit the genius of people like Von Dutch, Ed Roth, Gene Winfield et al. Kustom Kulture is artistic democracy in action, "The People's Art." This is an attractive book, with much information and great art. If you are even the least bit interested in this subject, this book's for you. I give it an A+.
Roth and Dutch live on.......2000-06-08
I have followed the work of Ed Roth and the late "Von Dutch" since 1953. The word Pioneer doesn't even begin with the work these men have done over the last 45 years. Dutch started the trend of "Free Form" pinstriping, along with painted "figures" and some very unique "Flame Painting" back in the 1950s. Roth started building some very unique vehicles, way ahead of their time. He called himsef a "speed striper" which was a rapid form of pinstriping i,e, "no following around with fine details" yet the work was quite good. This book shows the best examples of both Roth and Dutch, and contains photos that we all thought were lost years ago. "Von Dutch" (a.k.a. Kenneth Howard) was a very underrated man, who was filled with talent and skills that would revel most of today's artists. It was a tragic loss when he died a very lonely man. Roth did a Video of Dutch in the late 1970s, which really showed the "methods to his madness."
I personally have given a tribute to both these men by building a copy of the sign painters box (made in 1919) given to Dutch by his father. Roth has pinstriped a few of these for his charity auctions. This book is a treasure to the art of pinstriping and the "Kustom Kulture" movement.
And excellent read for the "hot road" generation.......1998-08-26
While being a big fan of "Big Daddy Roth", I still appreciate his hot-rod artwork. Shortly after finishing the book, I gave it to "Big Daddy Dean Paulsen", the man who taught Ed Roth everything he knows. Paulsen was pleased to know his understudy is still alive and well.
An eye-poppin hot rod adventure!!!!.......1998-05-14
If you ever wanted to learn about the masters of hot rod art, this is a good place to start. While not the difinitive history of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth,Von Dutch or Robert Williams, this book delves into the rude awakenings of this all American art form. A damn good read.(I just looked at the pictures!!!!)

Insight into renaissance painting technique.......2007-04-04
This ultimate treatise on painting technique, together with the perception and insight of the artist Cenninni opens a wonderful new window into the realities of art and craftsmanship in this fascinating period. One also gets an idea of just how skilled these people are and how hard they worked to achieve the perfection in their works. A MUST-have for anyone interested in Renaissance painting, or painting technique - from the horse's mouth. I'm thrilled to possess this book!
A Masterpiece.......2007-04-04
Learn how to paint like medieval artists, right down to the colors and techniques they used.
instruction manual for historic painting.......2007-03-11
This little gem contains a great deal of use for anyone trying to duplicate authentic, medieval /rennaisance painting techniques. The instructions on making egg tempera paints, for example, are extremely clear. This book may as well have "required reading" on the cover for anyone who is interested in painting, calligraphy, illumination or related fields in history and practice.
Please be aware! many techniques, pigments, and methods used in history were hazardous. many pigments in use in proffessional art workshops today are hazardous as well, but the Medeival artist did not have OSHA regulations and disclaimers. Please investigate the safety of ANY procedure or pigment before use.
This book is referenced by many other authors and webpages for their instructions, and can be used as Primary Documentation for most living history groups
After reading this, one can truly appreciate some of the perks of being an artist in 21 century... .......2007-02-26
When you open this little book you are in for a shock. Or, shall I say - a jolt back to a reality show from a florentine painting workshop circa 1400?
It is a completely unrefined(even quite raw to some tastes)step by step manual on the nitty-gritty of paint and medium preparation which can generally attract two types of readers - the professional painter who has heard of this little collection(and its mysterious "painting secrets") from word of mouth; or else, the seeker of bizzare and obscure literature of times past - in both cases you will go through this book alternating between bouts of disbelief and hysterical laughter...
Great entertainment, and perhaps even a thing or two to learn about how renaissance artists saw themselves and their work.
Cennino's Handbook, Still Illuminating.......2005-10-25
Art, genuine art, is a pleasure not only in the thrill of color and line but in its procedure and materials. In fifteenth-century Florence, an artist named Cennino d'Andrea Cennini compiled a handbook for contemporary and future painters to consult in their drawing and painting from the beginning, in choosing their ingredients, mixing their paints and preparing their paper or cloth for painting on.
Unlike the making of sausage, the elements of creating art are a delight. Here are some how-to's excerpted from this wonderful little book (translated by Daniel V. Thompson, Jr., 1933, reprinted numerous times by Dover), still vibrant five hundred years after it was composed. The details also unwittingly reveal something of contemporary everyday life, where the art came from.
To paint on a panel, you start with a little boxwood panel nine inches square, washed with clear water and rubbed and smoothed down. "And when this little panel is thoroughly dry, take enough bone, ground diligently for two hours, to serve . . . take less than half a bean of this bone, or even less. And stir this bone up with saliva. Spread it all over the little panel with your fingers; and, before it gets dry, hold the little panel in your left hand, and tap over the panel with the finger tip of your right hand [presumably Cennino was right-handed] until you see that it is quite dry. And it will get coated with bone as evenly in one place as in another."
Wondering where to find the bone? "You must know what bone is good. Take bone from the second joints and wings of fowls, or of a capon; and the older they are the better. Just as you find them under the dining-table, put them into the fire; and when you see that they have turned whiter than ashes, draw them out, and grind them well on the porphyry."
Parchment comes from sheep or goats; to draw on sheep parchment, the artist lightly inscribes the background of bone with a sharp point. "On the parchment you may draw or sketch with this [stylus] of yours if you first put some of that bone . . . all over the parchment . . . dusting it off with a hare's foot." To add ink, "shade the folds with washes of ink; that is, as much water as a nutshell would hold, with two drops of ink in it; and shade with a brush made of minever tails . . ."
"And if you ever make a slip, so that you want to remove some stroke made by this little lead, take a bit of the crumb of some bread, and rub it over the paper, and you will remove whatever you wish."
The artist gives equally clear and detailed instructions for whittling goose quills to get a sharp point for ink drawing, to tempering paper with several coats of glue (tempera), to making clear tracing paper by scraping kid parchment and treating it with linseed oil. White lead is a basic ingredient, so is saliva. (Saliva combined with lead poses a health hazard; painters often died young.) Colors come largely from minerals, and the author explains how to pulverize and mix minerals to produce the paints desired.
Cennino explains every procedure in gessoing, stamping on gold, working on cloth, painting on velvet (yes, it goes way back), gilding saints' haloes, designing brocades, and embellishing with gold or tin. Much of a loss for art history, his instructions for mosaics are regrettably long since gone.
The author also makes some opening remarks designed to put art in context in creation. Much as he loves art, Cennino subordinates it to thinking, and he never loses sight of the fact that it is work. After the fall, "Man . . . pursued many useful occupations, differing from each other," some "more theoretical than others; they could not all be alike, since theory is the most worthy." Art is a "labor of love," but it is still labor.
Still, his praise for art, being genuine, is as strong as any I have ever read: "Close to [theory], man pursued . . . an occupation known as painting, which calls for imagination, and skill of hand, in order to discover things not seen, hiding themselves under the shadow of natural objects, and to fix them with the hand, presenting to plain sight what does not actually exist. And it justly deserves to be enthroned next to theory, and to be crowned with poetry."
Book Description
Rankin Male Nudes draws its subjects from an anonymous ad for models placed in the classifieds column of London's Time Out magazine.
The subjects were then chosen for their ideas about how they wanted to be portrayed rather than how they looked, making this book a true collaboration between photographer and subject.
These men are literally revealing themselves, and the results are funny, sexy, tender, theatrical, and audacious.
While naked women appear in advertisements, films, and newspapers with almost relentless frequency, men do not. Rankin Male Nudes asks why this is, aiming to raise the profile of the male form in the mainstream, and explore the attitudes that inform its presentation and reception.
Customer Reviews:
It's a Matter of Taste.......or whatever....................2002-03-24
It's all a matter of personal taste whether you like this book or not. It's all in what you believe a book of male nudes should be. Do you believe a book of male nudes should be a fantasy of perfection & beauty or stark naked ugliness in all of it's day to day reality? We all create our own fantasies and I think in this day and age we are looking for handsome, muscular or at least in good shape male nude models to gaze upon. This is clearly evident in the increased sales of the many popular male nude photographer's books, for example: Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts, Steven Underhill, Adam Raphael, and so many more. They strive to show us all what we desire and possibly wish for.
That being said, this book is beautifully produced, well-designed, and the photography of Rankin is very creative in regards to lighting, shadows, and clarity. It's the subject matter that is just not appealing in most of these photos. This photo presentation was an attempt to challenge one of the last remaining social taboos: the male nude. Well, I think we are well beyond that now, and it's been accomplished, as I mentioned by all these other male nude photographers. Ads were placed in Time Out and Dazed & Confused magazines for male nude models and it produced over 150 responses. So you're going to find a variety of shapes, sizes, looks, and body types in this book.
If you're looking for excellent photography you may enjoy this book. However, if you looking for another male nude book of images of young, handsome muscular looking models, this is not for you. I believe there's a humorous side to this type of book, but I don't think it's the male nude photography we've all become accustomed to enjoying and appreciating. You've been forewarned! Proceed with Caution!!
A Unique Perspective of Male Nakedness.......2002-03-06
This book must be tackled in its entirety to be fully appreciated. And that includes the preface written by both Rankin as well as William Leith. It's not fluffed with pretty pictures of pretty men, one after another after another. It is instead strong testimony from an artist, who admittedly is far more familiar with a woman's terrain, that the male body is worthy of study, worthy of admiration, and most important, worthy of the same general acceptance as the female body is. As Leith explains it, "A naked women is in a way, not naked, but dressed with centuries of imagery ... naked women come already supplied with a narrative... Naked men need explaining.." Rankin trashes this notion!
Each image is impeccably photographed, as we'd expect from Rankin, and provides unique perspective on that individual. Young men, old men, beautiful men, and ugly men are paraded in their natural glory. The penis plays a major role here. It's not relegated to the background nor is it made the star player. It's just there, in almost every picture, part of the larger package. Altogether, it's packed with personality and is a wonderful slice of what the men amongst look like naked.
Readers looking for a fantasy or for a new vision will be disappointed - this work is purposely NOT about that. It is, nonetheless, fragrant with beauty and humor, magnificence and ridiculousness, inspiration and indignation, and (hopefully) with a new level of acceptance.
Not "Rankin"....Just "Rank Male Nudes".......2002-01-10
I found this book to be rather disturbing. Although there is a wide variety of ages and bodytypes, it appears to be done by an amatuer just looking to make a few bucks. So if you enjoy looking at the elderly and obese naked.....this is your book....otherwise.....go buy a cheap porno...it has to be better than this book!
Naked and ugly.......2001-12-02
Rankin's may focus his camera on naked men in this new book, but he doesn't find any beauty there. Known primarily for his mysogynist nudes of women, and his magazine work in trendoid cocaine frenzied Brit lifestyle mags, here he shows us that he hates men as well! While I wasn't expecting the glorious celebration of male beauty expressed by someone like Bruce Weber, it likewise carries none of the playful glamour of Mario Testino or testostrone fueled passion of Steven Klein. Skip this book and pick up instead this season's best new book of male studies, the monograph on Brazilian genius Alair Gomes.

8th great collection.......2005-04-11
Adult black & white collection of drawings.
This is the eighth (or at least eighth) collection of drawings involving housewives. There are around 38 well-drawn detailed drawings of women inside the book. The pictures range from somewhat tame (I guess the tamer ones in this collection would involve women not yet caught) to somewhat extreme (involving bondage in one form or another, humiliation, getting caught in action or incest, or the cooking of some form of the female body). The women are mothers and daughters, teachers, doctors, students, lactating women, pregnant women, and neighbors. The men, if there is a man in the picture, is shown shocked/surprised at the antics of their wife, or is not yet aware of the nature of the action. Some of the action is conducted behind closed doors (like the one where two women are caught together in the bedroom) and some of the action is quite open (like the back to back pictures of a daughter (I assume) sitting in the outdoors, naked, under a sign that notes "My Daughter "Puts Out!" and a mother, mostly naked (or at least exposed) under a sign that states "uck my mom's hot . . .").
Overall, the collection is interesting, and well-drawn. The collection contains pictures of bondage, whipping, cooking of female body parts, and humiliation. Note: some of the collections contain a page that collects the title of the pictures, but this collection does not contain that particular page.
Book Description
In the 1840s, gold had officially been discovered in California, and many men made their way out West in search of riches. The early mining camps were dangerous places full of violence and crime. Law and order was needed, and the Vigilante Committee became the first organized deliverer of justice in these turbulent new towns. As more and more people headed out West, and many new towns sprang up, a more official system of law was needed. From the days of the California Gold Rush to the killing of Bill Tilghman, the last of the traditional frontier lawmen, this book discusses the men that shaped law and order in the 'Wild, Wild West'.

Great Reference for Teachers of American History.......2006-06-19
The illustrations are not going to make a great impression, especially since most of these characters were not very impressive looking. The writing style may not be considered exciting, but the author covers the best known, and some of the not so well known lawman, including judges of the time - like Roy Mean and Parker. There are other books which beat around the bush and do not give a very clear picture of what they did or what happened to them. For the American history teacher this is an excellent book to have to fill out the details missing in text books about who these lawmen were and what they did ranging from the Wild Bill Hickok to the Earps and others. The author clear shows that many of these lawmen at times were also bandits. The coverage includes the lands West of the Mississippi from Texas and the Southwest to Montana and includes coverage of some of the range wars and feuds, Indian Police, the Pinkertons and good descripitons of what the frontier towns were like. The book makes a great reference for teachers who want to add some color to that part of American history in their classes.
A superbly written work on development of policing and early law enforcement on the American frontier.......2006-01-05
A superbly written work on development of policing and early law enforcement on the American frontier, Charles M. Robinson III 's American Frontier Lawmen 1850-1930 provides the reader with a rich, colorful documentary of early frontier lawmen who delivered justice in many new Western towns. From interactions between lawmen, vigilante committees, and wealthy ranch owners, to famous gunfighters and law enforcers alike, American Frontier Lawmen 1850-1930 engagingly documents some of the most vivid of personalities, adding color drawings by Richard Hook for stronger impact.

Terrific balance to the Gotha itself.......2005-07-15
An excellent overview of the German overclass in the 19th century. Explains how the Gotha works (and what it *doesn't* do), summarizes many lines, and includes twenty-two fold-out tables and many illustrations. The author thoroughly humanizes the subject and the scattered anecdotes are often wildly funny. And it has my favorite opening line of almost any book: " `For me, mankind begins with barons,' Prince Metternich used to remark benevolently."
