Book Description

Architectural modernism was revolutionary when it first appeared in the 1920s, and its innovation showed the world just what twentieth-century design could bring. Living Modern is a grand showcase of classic homes by such design luminaries as Mies van der Rohe, Charles and Ray Eames, Alvar Aalto, Richard Neutra, and many more. With over 200 detailed photographs of both entirely new work and remodeled originals, as well as numerous historical images, the true trademarks of modernism and of each designer are revealed. Ranging from materials and color to lighting and floor plans, Living Modern is an excellent primer to modern home style from its inception to the timeless features applied to the interiors of today.

Book Description

The foundation to drawing a character is the penciled under-drawing. An under-drawing that has somehow gone astray, once penned, ultimately results in artwork that just will not pull together or lacks balance. This volume explains in thorough detail how to handle the pencil, before the pen ever touches the drawing. Using actual examples of how a well or poorly penciled under-drawing can affect the final work, this book passes along many helpful pointers. Use this book to learn the absolute basics of penciled artwork, manga-style!

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the basics of Manga art style ! .......2007-08-15

I Got my copy of this book thru amazon,And was really disapointed because they kept delaying the shipping date and had to wait over 2 weeks until it actually got shipped. However the book it-self offers quite alot of potential for learning to design and draw your own Manga charecters it covers many topics on both the realistic and the manga style such as the design of the eyes/Nose/Mouth , Also it was very helpful when it came to Head drawing from all angles in addition to that it also covers drawing the human figure . The only reason why i gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because all the charecters in the book look like from some 80's anime . And i am not that much into that style i love Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's style more it's modern and realistic .

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!.......2007-03-17

This book has really helped me figure out how to draw manga step-by-step. I got it for my birthday and I'm always using it. It's got some really great stuff in it, so I would recommend it to anyone who has *some* experience.

3 out of 5 stars It's good, but needs more........2007-02-14

This book had good pictures and examples to help a person draw manga and it's characters, but buy a different book if you are a beginner. This book wasn't very helpful to me, but if you are a good artist already and hope to be reminded to how to draw a few things like the head and body of manga characters, then get this book.

But, I don't really recommend this book because it needs much more pages and helpful pointers.

5 out of 5 stars Super Kawaii book!.......2007-01-04

I knew this book should join the rest of my how to draw arsenal when I first laid my eyes on it! This book is sooo helpful in character drawing, it gives you the run down on different kinds of eyes, hair styles, faces, nose, ears, and the body. Another good thing about this book is that it shows you how the hair should be placed on the head, and how it flows when you are doing a certain action. This book also covers the types of pencils and erasers used for under drawings, and examples of the thickness of each pencil. It also has a small section of kawaii chibi characters! Aww! I would definitely recommend this book for those who want to start off drawing manga. Another plus is that the book doesn't contain any nudity at all. Perfect for those who are offended by nudity.

5 out of 5 stars don't have a clue how to draw manga this is the book you should start with.......2006-02-28

Fantastic, I would say this is the first book anyone interested in drawing manga should buy. I have other manga books, but this one is the best.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for Learning iMovie & iDVD.......2004-11-04

iMovie and iDVD are two of the iLife programs that ship with your Macs. Many folks think that, because they are the "simple or basic" programs, that they don't have a lot of features or can't do professional looking movies.

The fact is, you can get VERY nice results with these applications. There was a fellow who won a prize at Sundance Film Festival for a movie he made entirely with a cheap miniDV camera and iMovie. If you have budding aspirations as a filmmaker, or you just want to video a birthday party or wedding, you can get great results, too.

Jeff Carlson's book is aimed at beginner-to-intermediate users. It takes a visual, step-by-step approach. Everything is explained well and accompanied by lots of photos.

I was really pleased to see that he devotes the first 50 pages of the book to explaining how to use the DV camera, including how to take good video to start out with. He covers focus, depth-of-field, lighting, composing your shots, how and when to move the camera, etc. The term "garbage-in-garbage-out" was invented for computers, but it is really true with video and photography, as well.

Part 2 covers iMovie in logical order. He starts with an overview, then tells you how to import footage, edit video, edit still pictures for video, edit audio. He pays nice attention to the audio portion, including how to adjust the audio that came with the video, adding sound effects, music from iTunes and GarageBand, and adding audio from other sources. He also covers transitions, adding titles and making them look good on-screen, and adding visual effects to the movie.

Carlson calls Part 3 "Sharing." He tells you how to get your finished movie back to video tape or export it in other formats, such as QuickTime. Depending on the QuickTime compression scheme, you can put your movie on a CD, the web or send it via e-mail. And ... of course, you can send it to iDVD, complete with chapter markers.

Part 4 tells you everything you need to know to make a DVD. He tells you how to apply themes, customize them, create sub-menus, add chapters to an existing iDVD project, and creating slide shows with background audio. Then, he shows you how to create a project archive and burn the DVD. He finishes up with a chapter on troubleshooting.

This thoroughly clean collection of humor made me giggle 'til I wiggled and snicker 'til snot shot out. I truly love this book and make it a point to flip through it whenever I sit down on the throne of gross (I keep it in my unheavenly bathroom, dip-pickle!).

The alphabetized humor is easy to reference and good to use on an audience of one or one hundred or ... on nun.

Two thumbs up and clapping happily!

            Book Description

He may have been born in the East End of London, where he spent nine years with a struggling Charlton, but as soon as Rob Lee arrived on Tyneside the fans took him to their hearts. So it was with shock and not a little anger that the Toon Army learnt of him losing the captaincy and banished to the sidelines by then manager Ruud Gullit back in 1998. Things got so bad that Lee wasn't even allocated a squad number for the following season. In his autobiography, Rob Lee writes graphically and honestly about his treatment by Gullit and the Dutchman's eventual demise; as well as on a host of managers and team-mates during 17 years as a professional footballer, from the likes of Kevin Keegan to Glenn Hoddle, and from Kenny Dalglish to current club captain Alan Shearer.

5 out of 5 stars A journalist's view of Afghanistan during the Soviet period........2004-01-22

On the back cover of this book, one reviewer compares this book to Dispatches. I have to agree. This book is a great read about the Soviet Occupation of Afghanistan. The author is a stringer journalist who fell in love with Afghanistan in the early seventies and then went back to cover it during the Soviet War. This book is his personal memories of the war. Not only does this book giving a loving portrait of the country and the people, but is shows the brutal results when a totalitarian, clumsy superpower tries to exert its power over the people.
This is a relatively short book at 150 pages. A reader will find interesting portraits of both the terrain, different tribes, and some of the characters who waged the guerrilla war.
As with all wars, there is death and destruction. The one story I will retain about this book is the sense of honor among the Afghans. The personal story where Rob was left in the mountains to fend for himself because of a mistrusted guide. When Rob finds the town he wanted to go to, the Afghan muj find out about the errant guide and go off to kill him. To the muj, the guide did an evil act by leaving a visitor in the hills and needed to be dispatched.
Overall a great read about the war in Afghanistan in the eighties. Highly recommended.

              5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2002-05-04

Rob Schultheis does a great job making you feel the cold, the sore feet, exhaustion and fear while being hunted by armed tribesmen and Soviet airforces inside Afghanistan.

A great book to read on your next plane trip across country. I couldn't put it down and neither have the troopers I work with. It has been passed around so much I doubt I will ever see my copy again.

5 out of 5 stars Lightyears From Realpolitik.......2002-03-30

Evocative, beautiful, terrible and short. The madness and evil of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, in which the clumsy terror and brutality of the modern totalitarian state meets an ancient yeomen/warrior tradition of independence and honor. Modern, brutal, indiscriminate, and total thuggery versus the mercurial but brave cavalryman/tribal warrior. The miracle is that anything at all (garden, tree, house, family) survives in Afghanistan.

The writer evokes spiritual and social traditions that survive in Afghanistan to this day. Especially, male friendships that seem strangely important to our modern ears but contribute to a heroism that is irrational but ultimately successful in driving out the Russians (at a huge cost). Likewise, the strict code of honor---when our author was abandoned in mountains at night by a treacherous guide, a local leader promptly sought out the offender to kill him.

4 out of 5 stars Into the Heart of the Storm.......2002-02-05

Rob goes into Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan war, and realizes how plastic and robotic his life is.

There he falls in love with Afghanistan...the people, the land, the animals. Rob goes on to chronicle many parts of the war, from 1984-1987. The really unique piece, was the eye witness accounts of men and figures that I have read about in texts on the war.

This in itself could have carried the book; but he goes on to do more. For those of us sleepwalking through life, many will find this book a breath of fresh air. The book chronicles his many adventures, tales of the absurd, his fear of being killed, his bouts of depression, and the many hilarious situations that can only occur in war-time Afghanistan.

I think Rob found a piece of his soul in Afghanistan and in turn, he allows the reader to witness some of it. I for one, thank Rob for the oppurtunity.

4 out of 5 stars Just Like on TV.......2002-01-21

Can those guys with the weird hats and AK's living in the dirt on TV be real? Smiling all the time. Just for the cameras or what? Well, this book is evidence that those TV people really are real. They really do smile all the time. They laugh at stuff that would prove your insanity on this side of the planet. But over there it's really - different - and more real than just about 100% of our lives. And apparently it's not possible to go there just once.

              Book Description

Among the tens of thousands of pioneers who left home in covered wagons in the 1800s, headed for the West in hopes of fertile land, gold, or escape from religious or racial persecution, some forty thousand were children. Though the hardships and dangers of the trail were many, these children also witnessed the great and wild beauty of the untouched West and became an integral part of U.S. history. In this unique approach to the history of the wagon trail and western expansion, here are the moving stories of these young pioneers, told in their own words through letters home, diaries, and memoirs. Ginger Wadsworth's clear and well-organized presentation is comprehensive, accessible, and richly illustrated with detailed maps and more than ninety archival photos and prints of life on the trail. Endnotes, bibliography, index.

                Book Description

Books on information theory and coding have proliferated over the last few years, but few succeed in covering the fundamentals without losing students in mathematical abstraction. Even fewer build the essential theoretical framework when presenting algorithms and implementation details of modern coding systems. Without abandoning the theoretical foundations, Fundamentals of Information Theory and Coding Design presents working algorithms and implementations that can be used to design and create real systems. The emphasis is on the underlying concepts governing information theory and the mathematical basis for modern coding systems, but the authors also provide the practical details of important codes like Reed-Solomon, BCH, and Turbo codes. Also setting this text apart are discussions on the cascading of information channels and the additivity of information, the details of arithmetic coding, and the connection between coding of extensions and Markov modelling. Complete, balanced coverage, an outstanding format, and a wealth of examples and exercises make this an outstanding text for upper-level students in computer science, mathematics, and engineering and a valuable reference for telecommunications engineers and coding theory researchers.

Is an integral and good book, but there are some mistakes like this:

In page 32 the stationary distribution is wrong,
by example w1=28/46=0.6087 in that page, but w1=0.5854 !

                  Book Description

Fundamentals of Codes, Graphs, and Iterative Decoding contains need-to-know information for both professionals and academicians working in the field of communications.
Fifty years of learning how to design good codes can now be reduced to a single sentence: Good codes have a high degree of local connectivity, but must have simple structural descriptions to facilitate iterative decoding.
Fundamentals of Codes, Graphs, and Iterative Decoding is an explanation of how to introduce local connectivity, and how to exploit simple structural descriptions. Chapter 1 provides an overview of Shannon theory and the basic tools of complexity theory, communication theory, and bounds on code construction. Chapters 2 - 4 provide an overview of "classical" error control coding, with an introduction to abstract algebra, and block and convolutional codes. Chapters 5 - 9 then proceed to systematically develop the key research results of the 1990s and early 2000s with an introduction to graph theory, followed by chapters on algorithms on graphs, turbo error control, low density parity check codes, and low density generator codes.
Fundamentals of Codes, Graphs, and Iterative Decoding is intended as a synthesis of recent research results with a recognition of where these results fit into the bigger picture of error control coding.
Containing hundreds of theorems, proofs, and definitions, Fundamentals of Codes, Graphs, and Iterative Decoding is suitable for a graduate-level course in communications, as well as for a professional reference.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book to learn the latest coding techniques!.......2002-11-22

This book has the latest information on coding techniques that include turbo codes and low density parity check codes. The Cornell team of Wicker and Kim have done a nice job of putting together the latest developments in the field of coding theory into a manageably-sized book. The book covers the traditional block and convolutional coding techniques as well briefly. The book seems to have focused more on the theoretical side of coding theory with lots of theorems and (fast) proofs. Overall, I found this book very well-written.
