I am a huge fan of the work of Miller Hull, however I was disappointed that this monograph lacked a thoughtful depiction of the design process. I would have loved to have seen the architect's sketches, drawings, and personal writing. There were really too many pictures, and the book had the quality of a film strip. The Ten Houses book, which showcases many of this firm's residential projects is a better book if you want to see drawings.

This book provides an excellent cross section of more Miller|Hull work than you've ever seen in the magazines. This book is a significant improvement in representing the full scope of their work compared to the Ten Houses book. The book is layed out so each project gets roughly 3 spreads (or six pages). A majority of the photos are clean, crisp, beautiful images of both interior and exterior. There's typically one page of text and two drawings.
But, I have problems with this book. This book is over polished, over "published", & is more geared as a marketing brochure than a discriptive portfolio of thought and design. First, we all know these guys have done some really great stuff, but do we need to see ALL of it! Some of the less remarkable(i.e.,older, more traditional, more restrained) projects take valuable pages away from some of their more enlightened works. There's no heirachy about their design - everything gets 3 spreads, two token drawings, 500 words of static text, and some nice photos. You should not be able to learn more about a building from a magazine article than you can from the monograph. I want more! How do they think? What do early sketches and ideas look like? Models - I'm sure they've produced some great models! Where are they? This paperback book is a gem at it's current ...price. ... Ounce per ounce:dollar per dollar, the Ten Houses book is a better deal because it provides greater insight to the projects covered. But if you're looking for a blanket covering of Miller|Hull projects with nice photos, this is the way to go.

Disappointing.......2007-07-07

I tried twice to get into this book, but just couldn't. As others have said, there's a lot of steps to creating a journal image presented here, but even after all that, I came up empty.

The process is certainly a messy one. The author suggests using chalk pastels which - as a non-artist - I found very messy and difficult to use, with chalk blending into places where I didn't want it to go. When done, you have to spray it with a smelly fixative to keep it from smearing or getting everywhere.

I also didn't connect with the book's examples at all. Many are in black and white, which didn't help. I didn't understand how the examples had anything to do with what they were supposed to symbolize. It's not that I was looking to get it "right," but how is this big blob of green and yellow any more meaningful than this big blob of red and orange? It seemed like a bunch of random splotches meant to articulate a mood or feeling, and I just couldn't grasp the connection.

It struck me as a one-size-fits-all approach, and I think that's where it came up short for me. I would've liked to see more than one method of getting to "what does this feeling look like" than the overly-simplistic "visualize it." If it were that easy, why would I need this book?

This six week program was helpful to explore emotions and to give me a structure for how to understand my many feelings. It took me longer than six weeks, but I still do the process to keep me in touch with myself. I got this book for a friend as well! We both love doing it together.

I must agree with the other reveiwers who felt that it took the joy out of creating...I too found this book stifles creativity...the cover art is beautifull,the illustrations of journals inside are okay---but it is far too wordy to me...all this writing of intentions bogs one down and inhibits creative process..
I am an artist,therapist and use arts in my practice...

A Visual Journey to SAMYE.......2004-05-30

Samye was founded by Tantric master Padmasambhava and Shantarakshita from Indian in the eight century A.D. This monastery is built in the form of a three-dimensional mandala.

"Put in its simplest terms, a mandala is a diagram or pictorial representation of a three-dimensional universe used as an aid for Buddhist meditators."

Mikel Dunham has made many trips to Tibet and became the last student of the late thankgha master, Perma Wangyal of Dolpo. He spent years learning how to paint with mineral pigments and 22 carat gold. He then painted murals for a Tibetan temple in Sarnath, India. He was then given full access to Samye to document treasures that have never been photographed.

After a foreword by his Holiness the Dalai Lama (his actual letter has been photographed - how unique), the book is divided into six sections:

Bulding the Inconceivable
Approaching the Mandala
Entering the Mandala
Within the Monkhood
Above the Mandala
Precarious Preservation

Even his Holiness the Dalai Lama was not able to visit Samye and explains how he was very close to Samye when he crossed the Tsangpo river nearby in a yak skin coracle during his escape in 1959. After the occupation of Tibet, the building were damaged and irreplaceable books were destroyed.

If you have any interest in Tibetian Buddhism or have an interest in world travel, this book is sure to offer intriguing insight into the "Land of the Snow Lions." Pages 2-33 display mostly art (ancient murals) and then after page 36, the Samye compound is photographed from every conceivable angle, including a view from Mount Hepori.

There are also pictures of monks studying outside beneath the trees, monks and nuns performing daily chores and ceremonies, prayer flags draped across long ropes across the mountains, pilgrims wearing yellow khatags (ceremonial scarves), close-ups of elaborately designed doors, yak butter lamps and gorgeous pictures of the red walls with detailed paintings and patterns.

Mikel gives insight into what has happened to the art and even describes how preservation is at times as basic as filling parts of vandalized paintings with flour paste to prevent further deterioration. There are also pictures of grafitti painted across the Great Stupa Wall and beautiful rooms that have now been turned into junkyards.

If you have read books like "Karma and Happiness" by Miriam E. Cameron, you will enjoy the visual representation of her descriptions of Tibet in this photographic journey.

This is a true original! There are countless books about Tibetan Buddhism, but there are very few that have anything new to add to the already large canon of literature. Dunham's book is an exception. Samye was the first monastery in Tibet and it's history is crucial to understanding how Buddhism took root and transformed a savage country. The photographs are magnificent and the text is extremely interesting and eye-opening. Anyone who wants to know more about the origins of Buddhism in Tibet will have to add this treasure to their library. GS

A classic by a grand old gentleman.......2004-10-18

This is the story of the first Catholic Schoolmaster in South Uist since the Reformation. Frederick Rea was an English Roman Catholic and his experiences with the Gaelic Speaking Islanders of South Uist and the famous folklorist and poet Father Allan MacDonald make for a wonderful, sometimes funny and sometimes tragic story. This is a charming an important book for anyone interesting in multicultural studies, Gaelic heritage or Scottish history. It is really one of a kind.

Joe Kita's book is an oyster overflowing with pearls. I harvested this one slowly, because it is clear how precious each one of them is. Wisdom of Our Father's does what other books try to do: it delivers on the promise of its title. Kita's essays about heroic men, deeply personal insights about his own father, and his courageous claims about what he knows team up with beautifully edited and organized information from fathers of all walks of life. The questions here are those that you never ask but wished you had. Lots of little, digestible bits that you'll wish you could remember. I'd love to give the book to a friend, but then I wouldn't have it as a reference. Mr. Kita's description of a bike-riding trip he and his father went on is a great two-page essay. It's May 2000 and I'm surprised I hadn't heard of the book until now (maybe that's more me than the book). I'm thinking I'll be photocopying bits and pieces of this book for years and passing them on to friends as their various crises hit. A very, very good father's day gift.

Inspiring book for men of all ages -- fathers or sons.......1999-06-16

There's a scene in the movie City Slickers where Jack Palance tells Billy Crystal that the secret to life is just "one thing." I feel like this book is a list of hundreds of that "one thing" you wished you had learned from your father or things that you should teach your sons.

You feel like you're in the garage, or on the ball field, or at the dining room table having a one-on-one conversation with a bunch of great fathers. The great thing is that it's not celebrity wisdom -- but advice from everyday fathers you probably have never heard of. It's almost like you're talking to the man down the street who always seemed to know everything, or the grandfather you never knew.

I also like that the book moves very quickly. You get one piece of advice, then move to the next one. (Which makes it ideal for bathroom reading.) Even if you don't agree with something, chances are that every one or two entries, you'll find something that inspires you, teaches you, or reinforces something you've always believed. What's best, though, is that you'll probably find one piece of advice or one quote that changes the way you talk to your fathers or sons, or even changes the way you live.

A Unique Perspective on the Bosnian Conflict.......2000-11-03

The Black Book of Bosnia is not a reference book. Nor is it a summary of the events and actions that occured in the war. Rather, it is an interesting variety of social commentary put together in one place.

In any war today, a variety of correspondents are distributed to the region. This book is a compilation of essays brought in by several well-known correspondents or commentators, including Arthur Miller.

What is great about this book is the diversity of opinions as well as scenarios that are brought to us by the contributors. Some talk about the reasons the war came about, while others focus on effects on Europe, and the United States. Perhaps the most important essays are those that discuss the big reason that almost any recent conflict in Europe came to be....nationalism. Filled with insight, and evidence, this book brings a different perspective to what most of us just know from CNN or the Nightly News. By bringing us closer to the war by describing problems the common citizens of Bosnia see, it may strike a personal chord with some of us.

Several essays in this book bring about how truly pathetic and tragic the war really was. One of the most saddening was one essay by Slavenka Drakulic who commented about the destruction of the Mostar Bridge, a monument that had stood since the invasion by the Ottomans. In these few lines, the full destruction of the war is captured.

A book by the writers and authors of the New Republic, this book was enjoyable mostly because of how well written the essays in it were, but also because of how much information they brought out. Why this book differs from several others is mostly because it is not just hard, cold facts, but rather opinion and insight that give it more depth than several others.

I would reccomend this book to anyone to anyone who is interested on looking at the conflict in Bosnia at a deeper level.

Though different in terms of time and location, the problems they faced were similar, be it in their attempts to overthrow a repressive political regime or to promote economic and institutional reform within an existing system. While Gandhi's approach emphasized heightened spiritual awareness as a means of transforming the Indian people, Mandela's emphasis on a more militant form of social protest succeeded in stimulating the political energy of South Africa's black majority. Mao and Gorbachev's programs stood at opposite ends of the Marxist political spectrum. Mao made a popular revolution from below and sought to perpetuate the notions of total revolution and the complete transformation of the individual in Chinese society. Gorbachev, on the other hand, aimed to reform a stagnant Soviet system from above. Though his early initiatives engendered widespread enthusiasm, he was unable to restructure the Soviet system and ultimately found himself presiding over the collapse of the very system he had tried to revitalize.

If you ever take one of Deluca's class you know that he displays favoritism and he is also extremely arrogant. You know your grade on the exam because of the way he talks to you in class. Deluca may have extremely high intelligence but extremely low emtional intelligence.
I find this book to be bland and boring just like all of his lectures.
