5 out of 5 stars Excellent for learning to draw.......2007-08-23

I really enjoyed reading this drawing book. It was very helpful in teaching me how to draw from different perspectives. I believe that both novices and experts could learn some things from this book.

5 out of 5 stars More instructive than most books in this series.......2007-06-14

I love this book because it talks about perspective and gives detailed examples and advice on composition.
It even gives you info on the placement of characters in a scene. It's the best book out of the entire How to Draw Manga series. It's even useful for people who don't care for manga. I couldn't recommend it enough.

    3 out of 5 stars It's okay, BUT..........2005-08-29

..Other than what other reviewers have mentioned, I was a little disappointed the style of the inside manga had more of a butch 80's feel - the faces were uneven; didn't have wonderfully clean lines. The cover on the front gives you the impression (unless you know better) that THAT is the artist, or at least the drawing style.

But like what everyone has mentioned, it is a good book on teaching you persepective. It's just some things may distract you from the lesson at hand (if you're picky).

    5 out of 5 stars Truly comprehensive.......2004-11-23

This is the book to get if you want to learn perspective. It doesn't just teach you 1st ,2nd, and 3rd point perspective but also shows you how to draw slopes (up & down), forked roads, indoor and outdoor scenes, stairs, and the very important how to draw the relative size from one object to another.More specifically, it touches on the basics - standing on the earth, drawing the outdoors, distance of natural objects, drawing indoor scenes, how to draw backgrounds, and special effects and character representation using perspective.

I noticed an error in one of the examples but other than that, this book is highly recommended for budding or intermediate artist's whether you're interested in making manga or not. Getting your character to fit with the surroundings is key even when making pin-ups.

    4 out of 5 stars Manga Secrets.......2004-05-01

Good book, but in response to "A Reader" above, about MangaSecrets. The site DOES in fact deliver. If you did not get your product for some reason it simply a case of writing to the support email address? If you know anything about email, you'd know that a large bulk of it is begin deleted by your ISPs before it gets anywhere near you and the product is delivered via email... So *perhaps* that is what happened?.. Anyway just my two cents.

3 out of 5 stars A broad overview with no specifics.......2003-05-07

I bought this book based on a well written 5 star review. Being a beginner at digital photography myself I figured this was the book for me. I read the book from front to back the day it arrived. However I found very little information that I could actually apply to take better pictures.

On the plus side the book is very well structured and presented in a nice user-readable fashion. It's a full color book with plenty of photographs to illustrate his textual information. The pictures also give nice examples of 'good' and 'bad' photos. As a very rough overview of what to look for (lighting, composition, etc) when taking digital pictures I would say this book does a good job.

However, on the minus side I found this book very lacking in practical information on *how* to go about using the information he presents and taking better digital pictures. Sure, lighting is very important and will make or break your picture. But tell me how I should go about doing this.

If you are looking for a book on what do look for when taking digital pictures I think this book will work ok for you, but be very ready to experiment and make a lot of mistakes. However, if you are looking for answers, or information on actually how and/or what to do to take better pictures you'll need to read more information elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A great all-around first book on photography with digicams.......2002-06-06

This is a terrific first book on taking photos with digital cameras. The subtitle is 'A No-Nonsense, Jargon-Free Guide for Beginners,' and that is exactly what this book is. It is very clear, easy to understand, and very well illustrated (in color) with examples to make it easy to get the author's points.

The strength of this book is that it provides an excellent introduction to the fundamentals of photography. After a short section covering hardware and software, the first main section of the book covers photography, with a 2-page spread on each major point. For example, the first one covers lighting. If you don't get lighting right, nothing else matters - and so many people waste time and film shooting in bad light, or mis-using their flash. He goes on to discuss exposure, composition, depth of field, point of view, and many other essentials. Each of these is clearly (if briefly) explained, with excellent illustrations.

The other major section of the book is an exploration of the digital side (both technically and creatively). In a similar fashion to the points on photography, the author walks through key techniques which can be used to manipulate images on a computer.

My strong bias is that people should focus on taking good photographs rather than on technology. It takes too much editing to make a bad shot acceptable, and editing will almost never give you a really great shot if you didn't get the fundamentals right. This book is written by an experienced photographer and writer, and it shows.

A few notes on what this is NOT:

    - It's not a guide to buying a digital camera. But research on what to buy is better done using websites, as the offerings change too quickly.

    - It's not a detailed guide to how to use any particular software. This book covers the highlights of image editing on a computer, and gives you an idea of what can be done, so you know what to try and look for on your particular software.

Digital Photography may even seem too simple the first time you pick it up, but that is deceptive. If you master what is here, you will be a very good photographer - because the author knows what he's talking about, and how to explain it simply, and has wisely focused on the key points.

If you are already an experienced film photographer and want more detail on the digital side, consider Freeman's Complete Guide to Digital Photography as an alternative to this.

Now is a good time to give this a try, and Bavister's Digital Photography is great if you want to learn about both the digital and the photography elements. It is a good choice for an adult, or a smart teen with that gift of their first camera.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2007-02-13

This Batman book was my first introduction to any Elseworlds storylines (I guess I should get Gaslight now) and I wasn't disappointed. I'm not saying it was awesome but not bad. The art was good once you get used to it and the storyline isn't too bad either. I like the fact that the writer gave Bat-Man (as he is called) more flaws than the one we're used to such as inablities to pick locks or change his voice when Bat-Man. Batman is portrayed as a rich man with a suit and a mission. No kung-fu, master detective and two gadgets in the whole book gave him a realistic look. And it made Houdini look better too. The plot wasn't too bad but could've been better but I like the portrayal of Joker. So . . .if you want something you don't have to think too much about and would like to see a Batman that is a little bit more realistic (or what he was probably like when he first started in contemporary books) then pick this up.

4 out of 5 stars Houdini by Gaslight.......2004-05-18

Not unusual for Houdini, actually. What is unusual is his involvement with a certain man in a bat costume. Yes, another Elseworlds Batman story in the world of Gotham By Gaslight.

This story is narrated by Houdini. An interesting twist has been added to Batman lore. If Houdini is a contemporary, then Wayne could not study his posthumous writings. Thus Batman is not very good at picking locks or making escapes. I do not want to give away the plot other than it involves missing children and a very interesting twist on the Joker (who shows up in style but not name). It also adds an interesting twist to the life of Houdini, a man who spent a great deal of time debunking the supernatural.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Elseworlds diversion.......2004-02-17

Veering away from the usual superhero meets other company's superhero crossover, DC has Batman meeting up with a real historical figure - Harry Houdini. Although their adventure (they're after a smiling serial killer) is pretty much what is expected, it is the atmosphere and art that makes it memorable. Read this back to back with Gotham By Gaslight and you'll be clamoring for a Batman/Sherlock Holmes crossover.

    1 out of 5 stars A real stinker.......1999-08-03

Bad art and a weak plot dont waste your time

                Book Description

Forty-three accomplished women recall their mother's closets, where they tried on clothes, jewelry, and shoes and imagined the world they would one day enter, the world of being a woman. When Eugenia Zukerman invited these women to talk with her about memories of their mother's closets, she unlatched a floodgate that goes far beyond clothing and possessions.

This is a unique approach to an exploration of the intense, dynamic relationship between mothers and their daughters, tapping into myths, mysteries and rites of passage. The memories open the door to the special bond that belongs uniquely to mothers, daughters, sisters and girlfriends.

                5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Gift.......2003-08-02

This book, beautiful in every sense, would be a perfect gift for any woman, including oneself. It taps into so many universal themes of girlhood, womanhood, and the profound relationship between a mother and her daughter. I imagine I'm not the only one who laughed and cried when reading it. Ms. Zukerman is a graceful and interesting writer. I wish her two novels could be re-published in paperback.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful and Poignant Treasure.......2003-04-08

I don't know if Ms. Zukerman meant to create a new kind of connection and common ground with the other women in her readers' lives. But she has, in this intimate, powerful and poignant treasure. Not only did I gain entre to the childhood and adolescent memories of these creative and accomplished women -- memories I hazard many of those interviewed for the book rarely shared with others before -- but through it, I found myself reminiscing about my own early relationship with my mother. I found myself reading "My Mother's Closet" over a series of evenings, lingering over each interview, reading many twice. And, as I did so, memories of my own mother's closet came drifting up to me.

But this is not a book I could keep to myself. I think it's meant to be shared with the other women in your life. My daughter likes me to read her the stories, and we talk about when she was small, and what dressing up in things from my closets meant to her. My friends who have bought and read it and I also share thoughts raised by the book. Through it, we have discovered new topics of conversation, new musings on the wonderful, funny, wistful and formative memories of our mothers and their powerful influence on our lives -- thoughts and wonderings that have brought us deeper understanding of one another. I can't wait to see what happens when I give it to my mother on Mother's Day!

5 out of 5 stars An Enchanting Book for Women... and Men to Enjoy!.......2003-03-31

A friend was recently reading "In My Mother's Closet" and she was moved to tears by some of the compelling memories that are brought back to life by author Eugenia Zukerman. Even while understanding it was a book rooted in different women's childhood experiences, I was still intrigued and got the book anyway. From the first page, I was immediately captivated and gained great insight into the early lives of Carrie Fisher, Anne Spielberg (Director Steven's sister), Lesley Stahl, and many other endearing women. We men also have these fascinating recollections of their parents' closets where there were secrets or clothing that would signal the beginning of a special event. I always knew where to look for my hidden birthday and Christmas presents. I even called my sister to reminisce about the times we both played in the closets and were frightened by our mom's Fox stole that peered back at us with many eyes, as it was unbelievably comprised of several animal skins. I also remember wearing my dad's jewelry proudly in my teenage years when I was coming of age.

Eugenia Zukerman wrote this book for easy reading to be picked up often, as each chapter is dedicated to and describes one of the sharing contributors. Sometimes the stories would initiate nice and warm conversations with my wife and even with my mom. I recommend this charming book not only for women to enjoy reading, but to also share them with the men they love...and love to talk with as well!

5 out of 5 stars Open your eyes, open your heart.......2003-03-26

I began reading this book late one night on the subway, and I couldn't believe how deeply moved I was by the words and feelings that lept into my heart off the pages of this beautiful book. Women all over the world share an understanding of what it is to be a woman, a daughter, a friend. And, we know that our mothers and/or mother figures play an important role in our journey of self-discovery whether or not they are still present in our lives. This collection of poignant stories of women from all places touched many corners of my soul and opened my eyes to see what I sometimes do not see inside. It flooded my memory "closet" and inspired me to open its doors. It was VERY exciting for me and I have already ordered a copy for my mother and my "mother-in-law". I cannot wait to share this book with every important woman in my life!!

                5 out of 5 stars A Lovely Book.......2003-03-13

Wonderful rememberances which go right to the heart of the mother-daughter relationshipin a unique and moving way. The lives in this book couldn't be more disparate, and yet the magic of the objects we associate with our mothers seem to carry a universal power. I sent a copy to my mother and another to my sister. Then my mother sent a copy to HER sister. It's one of those books you'll want to share with your friends. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Here is what I most want to share with you, from when I was a girl growing up to the joyful day you were born, from your favorite games to my wishes and prayers for you.
I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
                Love,
                Mom

From the instant you cuddle your new baby (and feel your heart fill with love) to the day your son or daughter grows up and leaves home forever: the years fly by all too quickly, and even the special times are apt to fade from memory. And, of course, children themselves cannot recall those earliest years at all--their first bath, steps, and birthday. Make this your special gift to your child: a book with all those wonderful times preserved. There's a space for clippings, souvenirs, written reminiscences, and photos, touching quotes, and appealing design details on every page.
There's one for a daughter, and one for a son, appropriately color-coded.

4 out of 5 stars What Every Daughter Should Know About Her Mother.......2002-04-09

This is a wonderful keepsake for your daughter. This book guides Mothers in writing a manuscript about themselves to pass along to their daughters. Each page is colorful with drawings and illustrations appropriate to each particular subject. Also, each page is lined so that you can write your story right in the book. An example of a subject is: "How I Met Your Father"; "What You Were Like As A Teenager". I am enjoying writing about myself to my daughter. Mother Remembers, for My Daughter makes is very easy to write your story because it takes the guess work out of writing. At the top of each page is a lead in line, and you simply complete the thought. Very thoughtful gift.

                  Book Description

The swashbuckling English sea captains of the Elizabethan era were a particular breed of adventurer, combining maritime and military skill with a seemingly insatiable appetite for Spanish treasure. Angus Konstam describes these characters, including such well-known sea dogs as Francis Drake, Walter Raleigh, John Hawkins and Martin Frobisher. For about 40 years they fought a private war with the Spanish, and while their success in defeating the Spanish Armada is well known, this book also covers their exploits in the New World.
