Don't waste your money.......2006-12-06

The images in this book are very poor quality and often VERY small. I was very disappointed, photos are in black and white only, and they look as though they were merely scanned, and not well scanned. Often all that passes for a picture of a "movie star" home is a picture of a bunch of trees (hiding the home completely). If the authors cannot provide a glimpse of a home beyond just the dense vegitation in front of it, then they have failed in their effort.

STAR HOMES.......2006-11-10

This book is a guilty pleasure, really a fun read. I appreciated that every entry came with a requisite image. Granted most of the entries are star's from yesteryear, many of which i dont have a clue about, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book nonetheless. If you have any interest in this sort of thing, then I highly recommend it.

Fascinating tour of Hollywood homes.......2005-02-28

If you love Hollywood, architecture or are just curious about what kind of homes the movie stars live in, you will find this book fascinating. It includes over 350 entries - from silent greats (Garbo, Valentino) to modern day stars (Brad Pitt & Jennifer Anniston) - although the majority of the entries are the classic stars of yester-year. Each entry includes the address, a brief sentence or two about their career and fame followed by a paragraph about the house itself and a black and white photo. The photos are usually good although there are some that are very small and others in which you can only see a fence or a driveway. The captions note that some of the stars only lived in the houses for a few years. You might be surprised at how modest a lot of the homes are! An appendix gives "movie star homes by region" and "theme tours." If you are taking a trip to Hollywood, you will definately want to take this book with you, and it is a fun book to browse even if you are not going there.

This is a very good book. I enjoyed all of the photos and interesting information about many different movie stars throughout different time periods. Overall this is a great book that is very fun to read.

A Great "How To" Reference for Writers.......2007-09-10

This book provides a great analysis of plots and how to build them. Plots covered are quest, adventure, pursuit, rescue, escape, revenge, the riddle, rivalry, underdog, temptation, metamorphosis, transformation, maturation, love, forbidden love, sacrifice, discovery, wretched excess, ascension, and decension.

The author (Ronald B. Tobias) states on page 229 that, "the idea of this book is to give you a sense of what each plot looks and feels like". In my opinion he has successfully done that.

This book is a really great help to me, a young writer. The book doesn't promise to solve all of my plotting problems for me, it makes me think! I'm constantly learning something about plotting each time I pick it up. (Now I need to buy a style guide....) Great buy-

My only complaint is that its sometimes too repetitive. In one chapter he said the same thing 4 different ways! Though I must admit, it did help me remember and understand a little bit better.

WORTH STUDYING.......2006-12-12

20 MASTER PLOTS (And How to Build Them), by Ronald B. Tobias, provides an interesting analysis of plot, in general, and then a chapter-by-chapter countdown of twenty specific master-plot scenarios. Whether you believe there are really only one or two basic plots upon which all stories are built, or whether you believe there are an infinite number of plots, 20 MASTER PLOTS is worth studying.

In my opinion this is the best modern book on underwater photography by a long way. It is clearly written, very informative, practical and inspiring. It covers an amazing amount of material in a concise and readable fashion. It is much more clearly written than The Underwater Photographer, Third Edition: Digital and Traditional Techniques and other popular competitors. It's the only photography book I find myself re-reading before I go on a dive trip. Highly recommended for readers with all levels of skill.

The "Ultimate" Underwater Photography..........2005-06-07

As the subject suggests, this book should be titled Ultimate. Essential, yes, but where this book departs from the others on the subject is the chapter on Behavior, describing how to spot the critter's habits and make that part of the shot. Also excellent is the "How to Wow" chapter. Borrowing a page from Larry and Denise's seminars, this chapter explains how to add the "Pizzazz" that separates a good photo from an award winner. All the technical information is right on and very up to date with current digital technology as well as traditional film technics. Every underwater photographer needs this book!

Correct Information.......2001-12-07

Ok, here is the correct order of the books, atleast to book 6. There is allot of confusion concerning this, so I hope this helps. Book 1 is Prelude, followed by Overture, Sonata, Intermezzo, Serenade, and Duet. The first two that I have read have been wonderful, but the main purpose of this post was to help those confused by the titles.

X: Greatest CLAMP Manga of all time.......2000-09-25

X, known as X/1999, is my personal favorite. I've read _all_ ofthem, 1-15 (8-15 have yet to come out in English), and I must say,CLAMP has spoiled me. Their art is exceptional, story lines arecomplex and meaningful, and their characters made to love or hate.
This book is my favorite in english, because it introduces SeishirouSakurazuka, the SAKURAZUKAMORI, a heartless, cold, charming andhandsome assasin who has a secret past and bloodstained hands. ((He'smy favorite X character, along with Fuuma Monou))
I'd recommendthis book to anybody over 14, as there are lots of shonen-aireferences (guy on guy schtuff) and lots and lots of gore. Be preparedto love it or hate it. CLAMP really has a winner here.

Very Dark.......2000-06-22

X, or as it is called in America, "X/1999", is one of the darkest manga I've seen. This is especially interesting because it is done by the CLAMP team, who have also made such cutesy titles as Card Captor Sakura. Needless to say, fans of that series may want to research X a bit before reading.

"Duet" continues the macabre apocalyptic story of X, and hightens the feeling of a fast approaching storm. Those who are familiar with Tokyo Babylon will recognize the mention of the Sakurazuka; yet another aspect of the story, which, along with the disturbing imagery of Kamui's visions and the introduction of bizarre genetically manufactured entities by the "bad guys" accelerates the creepiness of the story.

If you like conspiracy theories, darkness, and an approaching apocalypse, this is definately the book for you.

The Plot thickens.......2000-06-22

"Duet" is the 6th book in the manga (Japanese comic) X/1999 (or simply X, as it is in Japan.) The book is written and illustrated by CLAMP, a group of 4 women who have created some of the most popular manga-Magic Knight Rayearth, RG Veda, Clover, and Tokyo Babylon.

"Duet" is a must have for anyone following the series. My only warning is that some may find Kotori's dream sequence a bit too long, it's about a chapter long, and quite gory.

The book starts out with main character and protagonist Kamui revealing some memories to the reader, and then trying to protect Kotori from Seichiro, a dragon of earth. One also learns abou the past of Nataku, another dragon of earth, and there is a flashback as Fuma is talking to Kamui, about a promice that explains Fuma's loyalty. Meanwhile, Sora and Arashi meet with Grandmother Sumeragi.

Overall, this book spends most time explaining things, such as pasts, what's going on-important, but not necessarily the most exciting. You might no feel as compelled to go back to it once you're done, but if you're into the series, definately get it.

Alva and Irva Dapps, eccentric twin sisters, never had an easy life. Their father died the day they were born, when his scandalous malfeasance at the post office was abruptly discovered. Their mother was oddly reclusive. The girls themselves, strangely symbiotic, struggled with their sense of identity, and even more so, with their sense of place. And their city, Entralla, somewhere in--perhaps--Europe, is somehow symbolic of all places, all home-towns, and all sense of belonging. Somehow the twins become involved in making plasticine models of the buildings of Entralla, all the buildings, creating a gigantic model of the entire city. And somehow this comes to have cosmic importance, later, as certain tragic events take place.

The book is written alternately as a guidebook for tourists coming to Entralla, and as the memoir of Alva Dapps, the more outgoing of the two sisters. It comes complete with a detailed map, recommendations of where to stay and where to dine, which trolley bus to take to which destination; and the sad inner struggles of two odd and lonely girls who never belong anywhere.

Author Edward Carey is imaginative and insightful,but he doesn't always make things easy for his readers. Sometimes the account becomes almost too fanciful, too strained, even for the surreal medium in which he is working. The writing drags at times, especially in the travel guide sections. It was not easy for me to finish this book. However, it was certainly worth doing. Take the book for what it is, an extended meditation on the sense of place, an inquiry into what it means to belong--and you will find the book strangely moving and thought provoking. A beautiful book about place........2003-09-28

This is a story of place. And it is one I found particularly touching. You will feel the same if you've ever walked aimlessly through a city's streets as you wondered what it would be like to live there, or - if you lived there - wondered what it would be to leave. Edward Carey has found the perfect metaphors for the alternate yearnings, to stay or go, in his characters Irva and Alva. But reducing them to symbols would be unfair. The warmth of Carey's writing prevents that. The real brilliance of his story, though, lies in how he manages to illuminate every emotional aspect of how we regard the places we are and may go, and he does so in such an unforced and natural way that we've hardly realized the depth of his contemplation by the book's end. His touch is light, but the feeling is strong.

The context of a guidebook for the unreal city of Entralla, complete with a street map and a recommended tour, frames the diary of Alva, the identical twin of Irva. As the twins grow up, they grow increasingly apart. Alva longs to travel and Irva turns inward. Alva's threat to leave her sister and their city plays out as the essential betrayal of anyone wanting to abandon their home. But Alva finds a reason to stay a while as she attempts to turn her sister from the retreat into herself, the smallest place there is. They take on the task of miniaturizing the city in plasticine; Alva documents the outside in photographs and measurements while Irva remains inside and sculpts. The tiny buildings "may not have been mathematically accurate, but they were, let there be no doubt about this, emotionally precise." It is emotional accuracy that matters.

"Miniature things move people." In Carey's world and in real life, it is because the perspective granted by things reduced focuses the emotions we associate with those things. Occasionally we are even made aware of the hundreds of other lives happening immediately around us. When Alva's and Irva's sculpture is reluctantly displayed to a scarred populace, both the smallness and the significance of the peoples' lives are somehow simultaneously grasped. These oppositions of place are difficult to hold in the same hand.

When the writer of this guidebook is revealed, the significance of small lives is once again emphasized and along with it the unavoidable bitterness of travelling alone in a vast world. This final revelation is devastating and beautiful in a novel full of contradictions. I don't ever expect to read any other book that so perfectly evokes my own feelings towards the places I have been.

A personal history of Entralla.......2003-08-14

Edward Carey again manages to write a wonderfully gripping novel. I am not going to go through the whole plot outline of the book as it is all here for you anyway, but the story of Alva and Irva Dapps is more than just a story about twins. It is a story of lonliness and longing, desire and duty, and really it really shows that one seemingly insignificant event CAN have a great impact on society. This novel really takes the readers through an excercise of emotions. Carey makes the reader join in with Alva's tense desire to broaden her horizons, yet we also feel deeply for the pain felt by Irva. After reading this book we are almost able to taste the Entralla buns, and smell the plasticine on our fingers. Reading the story of Alva and Irva and their atmospheric home of Entralla is an opportunity that should not be missed.

What can I say?! Carey can't falter!.......2003-08-07

Carey's first book, Observatory Mansions, already had me waiting on the edge of my seat for the next one. Alva & Irva did not let me down. His characters are once again lacking in sanity, and as the book progresses, so does this trait. I would say Alva and Irva is a little more solemn than Carey's first novel, but certainly a good read. The last portion had me talking out loud and murmuring, "Oh god. Oh my God. Oh no!" You don't believe the lengths the characters go to to secure themselves against their fears and angers until you are on to the next shock. I am certainly eager for Carey's third.

Dennis Fresch's personal account of the fighting in An Hoa is the one and only up close and personal account in this book. It makes for the best chapter there in.

While the below review by someone else is good...the battle for Hue City in 1968 lasted 30 days. I know, I was there.

Brilliant Marxist Historiography!.......2004-01-20

Um, a few observations are in order. Firstly, Marx's critique of history, economics, and society must not be confused with the later activity of Lenin, Stalin, Mao, nor Ho Chi Min: just because they used Marx as their point of departure does in no way diminish Marx's project. Secondly, Hobsbawm is a Marxist historiographer--not a Marxist per se. Thirdly, the period 1848-75 witnessed some remarkably convulsive and important events: 1) the Crimean War [Britian burned on the Black Sea], 2) the Dano-Prussian War [Prussian victory at Düpple], 3) the Austro-Prussian War [Prussian victory at Sadowa], 4) German unification under Bismarck, and 5) the Franco-Prussian War which resulted in the spectacular German victory at Sedan, the collapse of the Second Empire, the Paris Commune, and the establishment of the Third Republic. Need we say more? Get the book.

The Golden Age of Capitalism.......2000-08-02

After the collapse of the Revolutions of 1848, Europe as a whole was pretty quiet until 1914. Economically, however, the period is divided by a serere economic downturn areound 1875. This book covers the first part of this period, when European and American Capitalism grew strong.

Since Hobsbawm is a Marxist, he's not much of a fan of this period, but his coverage of it is quite evenhanded and honest. Again, as in the first book, he's challenging to read, but worth the effort.

name a single European event that happened between 1848 and 1875...quick! My guess is that a lot of non-Europeans would have a hard time with that one. Yet it was an astonishingly influential period, the time when both capitalism and imperialism became truly, irreversibly entrentched. Hobsbawm tells the tale masterfully. Reading the book, it's hard to believe he didn't actually live through this time himself. The book is a superb marriage of narrative with historical detail. Read it. Read all three.
