Great book for those doing a serious rebuild on an old home.......1999-10-08
I bought the book while rebuilding the front porch and columns on my 1904 home. It *is* a lot easier to take something apart if you know how it was put together. And we needed to re-create mouldings and millwork that was destroyed by previous property owners. This book shows how the "old masters" built these old houses.
I'm an old house purist. And this book has nearly 200 pages of detailed blue prints and drawings, giving excellent detail on how old buildings were assembled. (primarily residences) It satisfied that craving [us] purists get to make something the way it was made 100 years ago.
The drawings enabled us to *truly* restore the beautiful details of our old home.
The book has very *very* few words, but lots and lots of blueprints and drawings.

this is the essential text for figure sculptors. if you intend to take figure sculpting seriously you must have this book. i've appreciated my copy as a dear friend for many years & regardless of the many other books i've read in the same vein, this is the one book that i'd probably run in & grab from a burning building.. though thanks to amazon & the like i can just order another copy instead. cheers. p.s in fact i got my copy as fire damaged stock from when the local library burned down.
TOO MUCH CLASSICAL.......2006-11-13
A to much classical style for my taste. There is an extreme rigour, out of date nowadays. Besides, it presents few photos and hands and feet are forgotten!

Trying to learn art in a town where no "REAL" art doesn't exist is difficult, but this books goes into the basics of how to expertly form some curiousities as can be difficult without an instructor. All in all it could have used more examples, but it's a great book
Was recommended by a well-established sculptor.......2006-07-18
This book was recommended to me (as a beginning sculptor) by a well-established sculptor, and he was right in recommending it. I am not through reading it all, but it isn't the type of book you would really sit down and read from beginning to end. It is a great resource for figure sculptors. My biggest issue with this book is that it has so many pages in a small format that it is a thick book that requires the reader to prop open a page with something heavy if you want to refer to a drawing or text WHILE sculpting. It is really the type of book that should come in a loose-leaf binder.
A difficult choice.......2003-12-02
Boy! Buying this book has been a difficult choice. The information is essential to anyone working with human anatomy and sculptural form, however, you have to wade throught information written in a very dated, pedantic manner. Professor Lanteri's comments are in the classical form and written so long ago (his copyright is 1902 - 1904) that an interpreter might be needed for the younger sculptor. I almost returned the book because it isn't something to sit down and read in one or two sessions. This isn't a simple 'How to . . .' book, but if you are a serious sculptor, and willing to work your way throught the exaggerated writing style, you'll realize what a gem it is. It is really the most comprehensive book of sculpting the human figure I've ever read. I only wish the book had been printed in larger format so the illustration notes would be easier to read.

OK, but desperately needs an update.......2006-04-23
This is a very comprehensive overview of all the details that a prospective assistant editor should be aware of.
But the field of digital editing has changed tremendously since the book was last updated in 1999, and I found the sections on digital editing dated to the point of being useless.
Hopefully the author will update the book soon to include current processes for telecine and handling digital film and audio sources.

If you want a book that takes you through EVERY procedural aspect of assisting (film or NLE) then this is probably the book for you.
One drawback is that it might not be as specific as you may like, as it caters for Film, AVID, Lightworks... and it won't tell you which buttons to press. But conversely this adds to its longevity, as it isn't version specific, and so doesn't out date.
What it does tell you is how to work in the edit suite, what work practices are important and how to establish them.
It hundreds (and hundreds) of pages can seem a bit dense and imposing at first, and without some hands on experience you might get lost in the explanations, but this book isn't meant for a casual reader, it is a professional document that will widen your understanding. It might even help you blag your way into a cutting room.
Buy this book if you are serious about starting a career in drama editing (or any type of editing for that matter) as it will lay good foundations,

An outstanding technical and warmly human editing manual........1998-12-28
This is the third and extensively updated version of Norman Hollyn's fantastic in depth review of what really goes into both working on and in the film editing industry. Presented in a format that puts you in the role of an apprentice editor, it covers so many of the details that one would learn only with on the job experience. This is more than just a how to book, it is also a "how it is" book with practical information from first starting out, to first job.

Antietam was one of the critical battles of the American Civil War. The fortunes of the South were riding high after the resounding victory at Second Manassas. While Bragg and Kirby Smith invaded Kentucky, Lee's invasion of Maryland was intended to maintain the Southern offensive momentum, to wrest Maryland from the Union and to win the recognition of the European powers. But his bold plan was compromised - and at the Antietam River the Army of Northern Virginia was fighting for its very life. The battle marked the end of Robert E. Lee's first invasion of the North, and still stands as the single bloodiest day in American military history. Its political impact was just as profound. The Northern victory encouraged Lincoln to make public the Emancipation Proclamation in a presidential decree of 22 September 1862, to take effect from 1 January 1863. After Antietam the war went beyond mere politics: not only the maintenance of the Union but also the destruction of slavery and the survival of both Northern and Southern societies were explicitly at stake.

"Antietam 1862" Meets The Test!.......2006-08-31
I found this book to be one of the best in covering the Battle of Antietam in a general form. In order to study the battle with more detail one must select those available as to individual units, armies or individuals.
The publisher, Osprey Publishing,has provided an excellent and attractive format. Mr. Norman Stevens is to congratulated on this his first publication at least with this publisher. The details such as maps, illustrations and list of units in "Order of Battle" are excellent.
I would recommend this book for any student of the war.

Very detailed documentation of the Antietam campaign. I found many facts that were absolutely amazing, for the Civil War buffs this is a good read.

I hope that libraries are not purchasing this book as a legitimate account of the battle. Not only is the account preposterous, the glossary is inaccurate, and the index confusing. Perhaps a great amusement for reenactors, this cartoon crockery is unworthy of the subject.

Never mind my last comment. This book is completely horrible. It is packed full of information the authors simply made up. Honestly the most disgusting book ever written. I deserve to be kicked in my microscopic balls for writing this.

2,100 references and over one year to write by two of the world's formost experts on biochemical oxygen demand and environmental analysis/regulations. Plus it's the first widely available review on this subject in 75 years. What more could anyone interested in this subject or wanting to learn about this subject want? In addition the authors only found 3 errors in the 400 pages.
