This book was given to me,along with the London's one.
One does not need to be an archictect or a professionnal builder to appreciate this masterpiece.
In the last 100 years, Paris has eluded any massive destruction and as such has kept its historic,poetic and romantic characters.
The book is precised,well mapped,and the photos are top notched.
It would not be easy to carry around while visiting Paris! however one can list ahead of time the buildings of interest.
the book is photographed and written, by three Americans, which makes it even more interesting ,with their artistic objectivity and a view with a non parisian or gallic optic.

This book is as wonderful as One Thousand Buildings of New York. Paris, like New York, is just full of amazing buildings, each one more interesting than the next. This book is comprehensive and covers an incredible amount of ground. Each building comes with a nice B&W image, along with a short, but well researched synopsis. I find myself going back to this book time and time again, just to admire the wonderful architecture. I recommend this book to anyone with a love for Paris, or just good books.

My daughter really liked this book but she wants to be a Veterinarian. Very involved. Excellent book if you want to capture all the nuances of the animals body. A must have for the serious animal artist. It helps to know the correct structure of the animal.

I bought this book after a classmate in my 3d organic modeling class brought it in to share. It is great as reference for 3d modeling in maya, zbrush, whatever you are using. That's because it has all kinds of view like side, top, front and even more detail drawings of paws or head. The price is affordable too and the softcover makes it easy to scan and flip.

Not worth the buy: Borrow it or get it at a flea market. First off, it looks like some biology book, nothing artistic about it. The book is filled with old drawings that are probably royalties free anyway. Maybe it's OK as a reference book.
Get Jack Hamm's book instead: More tips and tricks on drawing animals.

Surprised by the quality!.......2006-06-29
I read this at the B&N and liked it so much I brought it home! (I paid for it, obviously)
Hissing is a story that seems to revolve around three main characters; Da-eh, an aspiring manhwa-ga, Sun-Nam, a cutie who wants to be a toughie, and slightly less important is pretty-boy Ta-jun, who's got a vendetta for Da-eh!! Da-eh and Sun-Nam seem to have some kind of complicated family past, but what could it be!? (Don't read ice Kunion's synopsis if you don't want spoilers).
Overall, I was very surprised and pleased with this book, since it's rare that I fully enjoy Korean manhwa - that is, both the art AND the story. Story is better than most manhwa, and the well thought-out composition and strong but detailed art compliment it well. The last time I enjoyed manhwa a lot was King of Hell and Demon Diary (not a big fan of Glass Moon or INVU or Audition. I prefer this to Gung, too).
So for a story that has a good mix of humor and solemnity as well as great manhwa references from our protagonist Da-eh, I can only recommend this book with five stars!!

I greatly enjoyed this book. It is the story of one teacher's career- both the positive and the negative.
The Personal Side of Teaching.......2001-11-30
I've just had the privilege of reading "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Teacher" by Edward A. Joseph and feel that I should express my appreciation for being allowed to enter the private world of Teaching in urban America. How, one might logically ask, can this be regarded as a private, largely unknown endeavor, given all the publicity the field of Teaching receives? It is simply because the intensity of the emotional involvement is just not appreciated or understood by the general public. This memoir does an admirable job of permitting the reader to share in that intimate experience.
The book is not voluminous, employing short chapters which actually heighten the effect of the hard-hitting commentaries.
The Epilogue has a paragraph which I consider to be very important:
"In addition, the education community needs to restructure the schools so the teachers can teach and the students can learn more effectively. Increasing the amount of curriculum that students have to learn and teachers have to teach is not the answer. High expectations are important, but the setting in which education takes place must make achieving these expectations possible."
I think Joseph is suggesting a more widespread implementation and acceptance of the Alternative High School concept like Yonkers Prep. I assume also that, while such an implementation would undoubtedly be desirable as part of a restructuring, his thoughts are not limited to only that. The solutions of fundamental problems inherent in our system are so daunting, complex and elusive that they would appear to require daring and drastic measures as yet not seriously entertained by those in positions of influence and authority.
In any event those closing thoughts seem to set the stage for a follow-up book on this subject. I look forward to it!
A teacher's revealing insight........2001-11-12
The author gives great insight into the the trials and tribulations of a teacher working in a large school system. Especially interesting was the section about the beginning of Yonker's Prep, the alternative school that the author helped start. It is obvious that there were many difficult times but it is also apparent that the author loved the actual teaching. This is a great book to read for any one but especially teachers and those that may want to be teachers.

This book really gives the reader an opportunity to see what life is like in the world of teaching. Especially in the larger school systems. The author ,through his experience, let's the reader see how politics and the outside world of the students make it difficult at times to actually teach. The beginnings of the alternative school, Yonkers Prep, was inspirational to read. They kept it going through many ups and downs. The author's love of teaching is really brought out in this book,although he did go through many difficult times. I think this is good reading for anyone. Especially for teachers and those who would like to be teachers.

This book and this series is not to be mistaken for the highly acclaimed series of similar title, Your Eight-Year-Old, by Louise Bates Ames. This is 62 fairly thin pages filled with not particularly helpful insights such as "Lots of girls now play soccer" from a British author. While it may have relevance to the UK, the understanding and advice does not seem current to anything in the US. Read Bates instead.

This book focuses on the combat careers of the last of the famous Sopwith fighters to enter service during World War 1, the Dolphin and the Snipe, both of which were built on the strong scouting heritage of the Pup and Camel. The Dolphin featured the unique negative-staggered biplane wing arrangement, which provided the pilot with the best possible tactical view forward for seeking out his enemy. Used extensively on the Western Front, the Dolphin proved very effective in combat, with a substantial number of British aces scoring kills with the fighter. The Snipe was built as the successor of the highly successful Camel, and entered service with the fledgling Royal Air Force in the summer of 1918. Although seeing just a few months of action before the Armistice, the Snipe nevertheless proved its superiority over virtually all other fighters.

I have this book, and at the time of its publication was very timely in its documentary of the Princesses' dress. Of course, since its publication, Princess Diana's fashion look changed even more. However, for great color photos and wonderful reminders of the Princess, it makes for great memoriabilia.
