Customer Reviews:
indeed helpful.......2006-11-06
This is a very nice book. It gives you ideas of shades and colors. It also gives various scheme options of how you would want to color each room.
Helpful book.......2006-05-25
I found the book to be helpful, but I would have liked more "color recipes". There were ideas for all types of rooms.
Vibrantly Colored Rooms.......2006-02-04
This book has good, clear photos and include the paint brand (Glidden, Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams) and color number. Always helpful when you are trying to match colors. Most of the rooms are very vibrant in color and the rooms are decorated in a mostly traditional style. Very nice book if you like vibrant colors, but my taste leans to a more subdued color palette.
THIS BOOK GIVES OUT THE COLOR NUMBERS!.......2005-01-08
I have looked at a lot of home decorating books for help with my paint colors. Many have lovely photographs, but not a one of them gives you the paint color numbers that you see on the walls of the photographed rooms, EXCEPT THIS ONE. I couldn't believe it. I was still nervous going into the paint phase, not knowing whether the colors would look as good on my walls as they do in the book. Well, let me tell you, they look even better! I am as pleased as punch. If you don't want to look through paint chips, try this book.
Disappointing.......2004-10-06
This book was a disappointment to me. Ms. Krims is certainly talented--but in a sort of loud and juvenile way, at least for my tastes. My wife said it best, after flipping through the book: This looks like what you do when you are in college, trying to disguise an ugly room. The book lacks subtlety. Her color palettes for the most part are too loud for my tastes--and I like color (I have a mango kitchen and apple green office). I agree with my wife: most of her color schemes would work best to disguise an ugly space or to distract the viewer from cheap furniture or some other bad feature in the room. I can't imagine using many of her color palettes in designing a room with great architectural features or a room that will be filled with beautiful furniture. Also, if you are looking for theory, this book has scant if any of it. This was not what I was looking for.

Old book, basic information.......2007-04-08
If you are curious about polymer and want in depth reading then you will enjoy this book. I like projects and applications. I have read parts of this book but it didn't tell me what I didn't all ready know or didn't much care about.
Sarah understands us--the judgement jumpers............2007-03-21
Sarah hit the nail on the head, so to speak. I made exactly that mistake (looking at the pictures when it arrived from Amazon) and since I wanted to make jewelry, boxed it up to send it back. It said "Jewelry Making" on the cover but had pictures of everything but jewelry. I was very disappointed.
But I procrasinated. I had waited too long to send it back so I sat down with it and began to read. Praise be!
Nan Roche completely explained her choice of photographs and just about everything else I need to know about polymer clay. She is clear, concise and has a way of commenting on her personal life that makes you think of her has a friend or well-loved teacher. This book was the first and best.
A Classic!.......2006-11-17
What a great how-to book! Perfect for beginners! Polymer clay can be quite addictive and you will want to make everything! Although this book was published in '92, do not let mislead you into thinking that there are newer better books now....this is a classic! Very clear instructions for the newbie! enjoy!
A WINNER.......2006-09-26
I bought three books on Polymer Clay, and this is the only one with all the techniques there that I want to learn.
Looks a little difficult for a beginner, but at least I know I have a true encyclopedia of knowledge here. I don't have to go out and buy a whole list of other products to make the items presented in the book.
Thank you , Nan Roche for making a true classic!
Polymer Clay Bible.......2006-07-15
Everyone starting out in polymer clay should have this book in their library. Many newer techniques have been developed since this book came out but this book contains everything you need in order to develop your own original work. If you're looking for a "projects" book skip this, but if you want the basics this is the book for you. I only wish Nan Roche would write another! I still find myself refering to it and I've been working in polymer clay for over 15 years.

The definitive underwater photography book goes digital.........2006-11-06
Martin Edge's 2nd Edition was the definitive book on underwater photography. The new, completely rewritten, 3rd Edition, now thorougly covers underwater digital photography, without neglecting film photography or general considerations. It is what you will want to read, whether you are new to underwater photography or you are an experienced photographer who wants to improve digital or underwater skills.
Mr. Edge provides specific, detailed, practical, advice, based upon his considerable experience. He demonstrates technique with photographic examples.
If I were teachng a course on underwater photography, this would be the required text.
The best there is........2006-06-12
The third edition of this masterful book on creating underwater images has expanded to incorporate the burgeoning world of digital photography.
Martin takes the student beyond the mechanistic approach of F stops and shutter speeds to pare image making down to its essentials. His TC system enables the photographer to hone their ability to recognise good photographic opportunities underwater and to more fully exploit the potential they offer.
If you want to improve your images, this is the book for you.
Third Edition.......2006-05-19
This book is great. All the information is very accessible and the advice is practical, comprehensive, very up-to-date and to the point - no padding - I wish more books were written like this. Apart from being a great "how to" photography book that will travel the world with us, it sets a new standard for ease of use and clarity. Would have given it six stars had I been able to!
Needs better focus.......2005-06-10
I was disappointed by this book. The photography is excellent and very inspiring, but the main text is often vague and inarticulate. The book does not keep its main promise of teaching us the author's special system for taking good photographs. The system is mentioned a lot but it remains tantalisingly obscure. I hope there will be another edition of this book with some input from a publisher's editor or a professional educator.
This is where the journey begins........2005-02-25
It is the many photographs I have seen taken by this man which make me realise I still have a long way to go as far as mastering the art of underwater photography is concerned.
Time was when every newly trained scuba diver would talk about the diving facility they are going to open now that they have learned to dive. Not so any more. Today, they are more conscious of the underwater environment and are keen to progress on to underwater photography. Well this is where that journey towards taking successful pictures begins. Martin Edge has mastered the art of underwater photography and has that indefinable knack of being able to teach others what he knows - and very successfully indeed.
So, if you are contemplating buying your first underwater camera - or if you have already done so, then get a copy of this book and do 2 things. Firstly, read it. Then wait a week and read it again! My own photographs were first published in 1974 and my first underwater pictures in 1979. Right now, my work has appeared every single month for the past 7 years. Yet I have still learned a lot from this book.

Not enough Facts too many quick qonclusions.......2002-06-24
When a Dr. writes a book, we all assume that all the conculsion will be based in fact as opposed to annecdotal fiction. While Dr.Gerard provides a good explanation of what IBS is and a high level guide to reducing IBS symptoms through diet and lifestyle changes...he fails to provide enough details on the diet that is needed. Also, he does not do a very through job of analyzing and discussing dietary fiber supplements, such as metamucil which have proven useful for many IBS sufferers. For example, in his writing that experts are split on whether or not Metamucil can help IBS sufferers with Dir..h and that he doesn't feel it works is not very useful to a person who just bought this book looking for a "Guide to Prevention and Relief".He should state that for those other experts that think Metamucil is helpful, how they suggest taking the supplement and what are the common issues that surround such therapy.
A good starting book on learning about IBS and treatment........1998-07-29
To answer your main questions about Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Gerard Guillory's _IBS: A doctor's plan_ is an excellent place to start. It is filled with useful tips and has a reassuring tone. I highly recommend this book, along with Dawn Burstall et al.'s _IBS relief: A Doctor, a Dietitian and a Psychologist Provide a Team Approach to Managing IBS_. Both books complement each other well and provide useful information. (see my review of Burstall et al. at amazon.com)

Confederate cavalry leader John Mosby is among the most romantic characters in the Civil War, and with good reason. From 1863 to the end of the conflict, Mosby's raiders were a constant headache for the North. Although more than 1,000 men served under Mosby, they usually acted in small detachments of several dozen, sacking supply depots, attacking railroads, and harassing federal troops. They seemed to move behind enemy lines almost at will, and in what is perhaps their most celebrated exploit, a handful of them led by Mosby himself rode into Fairfax Station, Virginia, in the dead of the night and kidnapped a Union general. When they were not on missions, Mosby's riders simply melted into the countryside, finding safe haven in the homes of sympathetic civilians. Theirs was a guerilla war. The frustrated North eventually assigned a special contingent of cavalry to combat them, and a price was ultimately put on Mosby's head. Nobody reined him in, however, and his command enjoyed the proud distinction of never having formally surrendered to the bluecoats. Shortly after Appomattox, Mosby simply disbanded his unit. This is another fine book from the prolific Civil War historian Jeffry D. Wert, who hardly could have picked a more intriguing subject. --John J. Miller
Customer Reviews:
Best of Mosby.......2006-12-27
Jeffry Wert's book on John Mosby's adventures reads like a great novel. It carries the action along while fleshing out the main characters, and gives vivid discriptions of the places of "Mosby Confederacy." Just an outstanding effort and Wert is to be praised. I have read all of the books on Mosby and while the others are good, this one was the most entertaining. It is well researched (as are all of Wert's books), and the author does excellent job of describing the events that brought home the Civl War to the people of Loudoun and Fauquier counties in Virginia.
Fair and Balanced.......2006-10-06
Jeffry Wert came to his subject about as objectively as is possible in such matters. He was not afraid to point out Mosby's weaknesses - and he had them - but neither was he afraid to trumpet his strengths which were considerably more numerous and important than his weaknesses.
John Mosby - in Wert's own words - was the 'most lethal man' about whom the author had ever written and yet, Mosby's 'lethality' is not that of other 'notorious guerrillas and bushwhackers' who fought for the Confederacy, men like Quantrill, Anderson and Ferguson. Rather, his was constrained, premeditated and intellectual in nature; Mosby was no bestial monster who killed in the red rage of sectional hatred. As long as Union soldiers were fighting against him, Mosby - and his men - did not hesitate to kill - and they did it very well indeed! However, once a soldier or a command had surrendered, he immediately embraced that behavior considered honorable in wartime - so much so, in fact, that some of his best friends after the war were officers whom he had captured. Only in two instances did Mosby fight 'under the black flag' - that is, with no prisoners being taken. The first involved the understanding by Mosby's command that they were to kill all troops involved in the destruction of civilian property. The second occurred when Mosby was forced (very much against his will) to engage in retaliation for the hanging and shooting of six of his men at Front Royal and the later hanging of another of his men who had been captured. Mosby believed that unless he responded in kind ('measure for measure' as he himself said) his men would be treated as outlaws and not soldiers when captured. Interestingly enough, in the latter instance, Mosby made sure to get permission to retaliate by going up through the chain of command, requesting the 'blessing' of both Lee and Secretary of War Seddon - which he got. He also chose by lot seven men under Custer and Lowell, the commands that had been responsible for the lynching and shooting of his men.
Wert gives us a 'fair and balanced' picture of the man who became the 'patron saint' of today's Special Forces, a man so far ahead of his time strategically that he was often considered a thief and an outlaw by his own side and whose impact on the war was far greater than the size of his command or the limited area in which he fought would indicate. At the same time, however, Wert does not make Mosby into some legendary figure who could have single-handedly rescued the Confederacy if only things had been just slightly different. And yet, it is well to remember that it was Robert E. Lee who, upon hearing of one of Mosby's earliest exploits said, 'Hurrah for Mosby! I wish I had a hundred of him!' Who knows what Lee could have done had he the services of a hundred men with the vision, acumen and intellect of John Singleton Mosby!
Good at the end.......2006-02-17
I have to be honest, I almost put the book down half way through. But I gave the author the benefit of the doubt and kept on reading.
I couldn't figure out why Mosby was so "glorified" as a great leader reading this book. Basically all the author described was taking prisoners and stealing horses.
After I read to the last 1/3 of the book the action picks up. Now I know why Mosby is so highly regarded in the "Confederacy".
It turned out to be a good read, and one has to admire the leadership and courage of Mosby, Chapman, Richards, and all his men.
Colorless........2004-03-09
This is not a biography of John Singleton Mosby but rather an analysis of the men under his command. The writer does a fair job outlining Mosby's operations in Northern Virginia, primarily Loudoun, Fairfax and Fauquier counties, so from that point of view it appears well researched. But Wert's prose is flat and somewhat boring. As a result, this is a very difficult book to get into. Better maps might have helped.
A Great Effort.......2004-01-07
I love books about Mosby especially since I grew up in Prince William County Virginia, this is and was an area that in the civil war was known as Mosby's Confederacy because of the help the commander of the guerrilla unit had from the locals and the fact that one ths one unit almost single-handedly kept this part of Virginia in Confederate hands throughout the war.
Two points
One-More accurately it is a story about the UNIT with an emphasize on Mosby and while there are some elements that could be considered part of a biography on John Mosby that's not the whole purpose of this book. So if you are looking for a biography there are probably better books you could pick.
Two-While I loved the book I can certainly see where some others may have a problem, it suffers from a big problem in some historical accounts of all times, namely it is dry and at times it rambles. That's fine by me I like blow-by-blow accounts of operations and battles but someone who is looking for something different might want to try something else.
Overall-This book is sort of a like it or hate it book. I happen to like it.

Book Description
Ride with the Gray Ghost of the Confederacy in Mosby and His Rangers as a small group of guerilla fighters keep thousands of Union troops tied up defending Washington. Presenting the excitement of the raids in the words of the Rangers, the book then carefully puts their controversial tactics within the larger perspective of the resulting Union punishment of civilians.
Customer Reviews:
An Informative Book.......2002-03-21
Though written for young readers, there are few better accounts of John Singleton Mosby and his Confederate partisans than "Mosby and his Rangers." Beller provides a detailed account of Mosby's life, from his birth in Edgemont, Virginia to his death many years later. Not only does she create a prefect picture of Mosby's career, but honors his partisan rangers and shows his effect on them.
The book describes many of Mosby's succesful raids, including one where he snuck into a Union camp and kidanpped Brigadier General Edwin Henry Stoughton without any of his rangers being caught.
This book was very well written for the audience it was intended for. Informative and descriptive, "Mosby and his Rangers" is a perfect biography of one of the most effective military leaders of the Civil War.
It was incredible.......2000-12-06
I particularly like this book because of the use of words! I felt like i was really there with the gray ghost as he went about his mischevious adventures! If I were you, I'd buy it!
