Book Description

It's been our distinct pleasure over the past few years to publish monographs on a select group of young architects and firms whose work represents the best of contemporary design thinking while retaining a distinctive regional sensibility. The Nova-Scotian architect Brian MacKay-Lyons fits neatly into this distinguished list, which includes Marlon Blackwell in the Ozarks, Rick Joy in the Southwest, and Miller/Hull in the Northwest.

Those familiar with Nova Scotia understand the austere beauty of this Canadian landscape, with its wide open skies and rugged terrain pushing up against the Atlantic. MacKay-Lyons's work responds to this unique topography and to the vernacular building traditions that define its communities. His houses, commercial buildings, and public projects combine regional forms with local materials, technologies, and building practices to create works that are linked to their environments right down to their DNA. Peaked gables, shed roofs, and sliding doors are inspired by local barn types; corrugated metal cladding comes from the buildings used by the area’s fishing industry; structural wooden frames are based on local ship-building traditions. These elements communicate a sense of place that is sophisticated, accessible, and free of sentimentality.

Novelist and historian Malcolm Quantrill weaves together an intimate portrait of MacKay-Lyons and his work, elucidating the "peculiar regionality" of his subject's architecture.

A New Voices monograph published with The Graham Foundation.

5 out of 5 stars Striking Houses.......2005-08-30

So much architecture these days is known primarily because it is the same general thing repeated endlessly. Sort of like the houses made of ticky-tacky in Daly City. Then once in a while you find a book like this one which features a series of buildings, that truly stand out.

Located mostly in Nova Scotia, the architecture of Mr. MacKay-Lyons stands out as truly distinctive. Mostly of small rather inexpensive residences that are very difficult to make dramatic, here are examples of beautiful buildings. Further, most of them are small, and that means inexpensive. As he puts it, they do not have the big debt philosophy. You live in a tarpaper shack until you can afford siding.

Besides houses, there are various commercial builings included from a dramatic theater, a Canadian embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, office buildings and university buildings.

Finally, for several years he has hosted a gathering of interested people in building a structure on land he owns just to explore the limits of what can be done. These projects, called Ghost, are illustrated to give form to some of their ideas.

Splendid book.

3 out of 5 stars yikes, nothing about fashion.......2007-05-26

just a common book on how to scratch. talks about drawing models, but has nothing to do with fashion. squeezed the hot word in just to attact more attention. plus, you'll never draw like that for your fashion creative work.

5 out of 5 stars Useful.......2007-01-05

This is a very handy reference to use while sketching people. It offers plenty of information and gets right to the nuts and bolts of getting the artwork done right. While other books seem to be filled with the author trying to entertain this one is filled with the author trying to explain and teach. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2004-05-04

i enjoyed this book from an artist point of view, it is really great if you are more so into giving your work a more "polished" artistic look but not much for fashion illustration. Only the section about rendering fabric patterns (gingham, stripes, and fabric folds) are really useful.

3 out of 5 stars It's good, but not for a total beginner............2003-09-23

This book definitely showed me how to draw the figure and the face by using shapes, but I need more focus on the clothes and the movement of the body. It's very helpful in showing you how to draw the fabrics to look lifelike so it is a very good book, but not for someone with no experience at all.

5 out of 5 stars Draw Fashion Models!.......2003-09-20

I found this book to be a incredible help in my art work. I have spent hours in book stores looking at books on pencil art work instruction on drawing people. Among all the books I looked at I found nothing that comes close to Lee Hammonds technique in the use of shading. I also am a photographer and I understand the importance of light values which Lee stresses in her teaching which creates such a realitic look to your drawings.

I am so thankful I came across this book. Lee Hammond states in the acknowledgments of the book she could not find any source or school to teach her the style and pencil technique she teaches so she turned to self-teaching. I also purchased her book "How To Draw Real People" this book has also given me some great ideas to add to my drawings of people. I am in the process of purchasing some of her other books as well on sketching animals. Thanks Lee for sharing your artistic talent!

1 out of 5 stars No important information at all.......2006-07-03

This book was empty as far as knowlege and techniques for a makeup artist. I would also assume for a photographer as well.

1 out of 5 stars Thank god I checked it out at library.......2005-02-04

I recently checked this book out at the library. Thank God I did before I bought it. It should instead be titled, "Makeup application for little girls that think lipstick all over the face is a good look." It would have been more accurate.

If I was the author of this book, I would be ashamed of some of the images. He obviously didn't look closely at the photos that were supposed to be representative of what he was writing about. The eyeliner is jagged and not close to the eye. The foundation is oily and dirty looking. The child's clown makeup looks like she probably put it on herself.

    This book is a waste.

    1 out of 5 stars Make-up Techniques for Photography.......2003-02-18

As a professional portrait photographer, I thought it would be helpful to have a better understanding of the differences in applying make-up for a normal social setting, and a photography shoot. What a disappointment this book was! In addition to being poorly written and redundant from page to page, it didn't offer any information that any female over the age of 12 doesn't already know. I think we all know that we should wash our faces every day. And the make-up depicted in the photographs was very poorly done--my 14 year-old daughter does a better job of applying eyliner than their so-called expert. Even the photography itself was not impressive. And most of the make-up styles shown were very dated. All in all, it was a complete waste of my money, and of the 30 minutes of my time it took to read it.

    1 out of 5 stars dissapointing.......2001-11-06

This is, at best, a poorly done book. As a professional photographer, I thought it would be helpful for me to know a little more about makeup. This book has the basics, but the example photos don't look particularly impressive and the writing seems carelessly or hastily written.
There don't seem to be a lot of books on makeup for photographers, but I didn't think this book was worth the price.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-06-17

I have over 40 books on make up and this is surely the worst one I have bought. The title is completely misleading and there is very little of substance.Basic make up techniques with reference to various lighting techniques as well as color light relationship is not mentioned.Fundamental things like colour theory which is so essential to make up and photography is not mentioned in the book. This book is just one of the many mediocre titles available on make up.I would not recommend this book to anyone but if you wish to waste [price] feel free to order the title.

          Book Description

States of Memory illuminates the construction of national memory from a comparative perspective. The essays collected here emphasize that memory itself has a history: not only do particular meanings change, but the very faculty of memory—its place in social relations and the forms it takes—varies over time. Integrating theories of memory and nationalism with case studies, these essays stake a vital middle ground between particular and universal approaches to social memory studies.

The contributors—including historians and social scientists—describe societies’ struggles to produce and then use ideas of what a “normal” past should look like. They examine claims about the genuineness of revolution (in fascist Italy and communist Russia), of inclusiveness (in the United States and Australia), of innocence (in Germany), and of inevitability (in Israel). Essayists explore the reputation of Confucius among Maoist leaders during China’s Cultural Revolution; commemorations of Martin Luther King Jr. in the United States Congress; the “end” of the postwar era in Japan; and how national calendars—in signifying what to remember, celebrate, and mourn—structure national identification. Above all, these essays reveal that memory is never unitary, no matter how hard various powers strive to make it so.

States of Memory will appeal to those scholars-in sociology, history, political science, cultural studies, anthropology, and art history-who are interested in collective memory, commemoration, nationalism, and state formation.

4 out of 5 stars A wise Englishman's "Feng Shui" of gracious living........1999-12-22

Fascinating look at elegant living, through the expert perspective of an actual English butler (his service began in 1922). The book is roughly equal parts reminiscences about the way the great houses operated, and step-by-step instructions on serving port, polishing shoes, setting the table, and caring for silver. His instructions on folding clothes for travel are thoroughly effective. Sprinkled throughout are more extreme tidbits, such as the proper way to iron a newspaper (so that Gentleman #2 has a "fresh" newspaper, once Gentleman #1 has finished with it). What comes through, loud and clear, is Mr. Ager's craftsmanlike pride in the work that he did. Flicking the dust off a suit jacket takes skill, and hearing him teach that skill is a pleasure.

                                Book Description

On 18 April 1861, assistant presidential secretary John Hay recorded in his diary the report of several women that "some young Virginian long haired swaggering chivalrous of course. . . and half a dozen others including a daredevil guerrilla from Richmond named Ficklin would do a thing within forty eight hours that would ring through the world."

The women feared that the Virginian planned either to assassinate or to capture the president. Calling this a "harrowing communication," Hay continued his entry: "They went away and I went to the bedside of the Chief couché. I told him the yarn; he quietly grinned."

This is but one of the dramatic entries in Hay’s Civil War diary, presented here in a definitive edition by Michael Burlingame and John R. Turner Ettlinger. Justly deemed the most intimate record we will ever have of Abraham Lincoln in the White House, the Hay diary is, according to Burlingame and Ettlinger, "one of the richest deposits of high-grade ore for the smelters of Lincoln biographers and Civil War historians." While the Cabinet diaries of Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Gideon Welles also shed much light on Lincoln’s presidency, as does the diary of Senator Orville Hickman Browning, none of these diaries has the literary flair of Hay’s, which is, as Lincoln’s friend Horace White noted, as "breezy and sparkling as champagne." An aspiring poet, Hay recorded events in a scintillating style that the lawyer-politician diarists conspicuously lacked.

Burlingame and Ettlinger’s edition of the diary is the first to publish the complete text of all of Hay’s entries from 1861 through 1864. In 1939 Tyler Dennett published Lincoln and the Civil War in the Diaries and Letters of John Hay, which, as Civil War historian Allan Nevins observed, was "rather casually edited." This new edition is essential in part because Dennett omitted approximately 10 percent of Hay’s 1861–64 entries.

Not only did the Dennett edition omit important parts of the diaries, it also introduced some glaring errors. More than three decades ago, John R. Turner Ettlinger, then in charge of Special Collections at the Brown University Library, made a careful and literal transcript of the text of the diary, which involved deciphering Hay’s difficult and occasionally obscure writing. In particular, passages were restored that had been canceled, sometimes heavily, by the first editors for reasons of confidentiality and propriety. Ettlinger’s text forms the basis for the present edition, which also incorporates, with many additions and much updating by Burlingame, a body of notes providing a critical apparatus to the diary, identifying historical events and persons.

5 out of 5 stars Superb history with publishing issues.......2006-11-15

One reviewer found Hay's diary uninteresting, and that is hardly strange. Most diaries I've read are dull because they are most often jottings of information out of the head of an individual. I, too, would have liked more inside information out of John Hay, but he did not write it, so let's not downgrade the book because we didn't get what we would have liked. Burlingame's editing is top-notch, just what you would expect from a quality historian. My two gripes about the book were undoubtedly caused by the publisher's decision, which I recognize from first-hand experience: 1) Why endnotes instead of footnotes? If all the notes listed were sources, endnotes would be fine, but Burlingame's notes are critical and provide a lot of additional information. Constantly turning back to the endnotes breaks up the reading experience. 2) Burlingame maintained the crossed-out words in Hay's diary by using a strike-through font, which is fine except that the publisher used a strike-through so dark that it is hard to read the words underneath. Nonetheless, this is fine work, and I highly recommend it. If nothing else, you will gain knowledge of the enormous number of people with whom Abraham Lincoln had to deal every day.

                                3 out of 5 stars difficult.......2005-08-11

My opinion of Hay's diary is very different then the other reviewer. I found it very hard to read, to understand, and to learn from. For a Lincoln scholar it might be useful, For me, a general history reader, I was very disappointed. The language was often bizzare, superficial, and very small. A great many names but no real people! Just names. Flat, flat, very flat. Hay died in Teddy Roosevelt's administration during the canal project as Sec. of State. He must have had a great deal on the ball to be so useful so long. I see nothing of it is his "Civil War Diary".

Hay, the young Assistant Presidential Secretary, was like a son to Lincoln. The President, in the diary often affectionately and irreverently referred to as "The Tycoon", relaxed around Hay as around few others, giving the diarist an insight into the character of Lincoln which is almost unique. This alone would make the book worthwhile, but Hay's views on other personalities and events of those dramatic days are also valuable, and engagingly written.
Hay's diary has been published before, but incomplete and poorly edited. This is the first complete edition, with all the entries restored and with extensive explanatory notes, which are necesary to follow Hay's refernces to obscure persons and events.
Essential for the Lincoln scholar and highly recommended for anyone's Civil War shelf.

                                  Product Description

Dwight D. Eisenhower and Nikita Khrushchev presided over a pivotal period in Soviet-American relations. The ongoing Korean War and the lack of an American ambassador in Moscow illustrate the strain in Soviet-American relations at the start of Eisenhower's presidency, but things changed after Stalin died only 44 days later. Stalin's successors began to liberalize both domestic and foreign policy in what became known as the Thaw. There was an increase in diplomatic exchanges, including the first modern summit conferences. Of even greater importance, the Soviet leaders began to reestablish the scientific, cultural, and tourist contacts that had been broken under Stalin. Because political and ideological tensions remained and there were still restrictions on contacts, the Soviet overtures can best be described as a half-offered hand of friendship, and perhaps it was less of a thaw than the end of a blizzard. Nevertheless, these contacts began a process which would help end the Cold War three decades later. This history of relations between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Eisenhower and Khrushchev administrations explores political, social and cultural exchanges, and assesses their impact upon the two countries. Besides diplomatic documents, memoirs from Americans and Soviets, and works of history, it relies upon eyewitness accounts by journalists, tourists and others to paint a detailed picture of the era. Notes are included for each chapter, and there is a bibliography and an index.

                                    Book Description

The voice of a renowned professor of philosophy in Poland, who is also a Roman Catholic priest, is introduced to the United States in this collection of his provocative essays on the interplay of science and religion. Michael Heller progressively outlines systematic steps that might lead to a peaceful coexistence of these traditionally separate fields of study. Some essays have their roots in the author's work in physics and cosmology, while others present his theories on the language of God, creation, and transcendence, inspired by his work in the applications of so-called noncommutative geometry, an emerging field of study.

The book is organized into four sections, each preceded by a brief introduction explaining the order of the essays and their internal logic.

Part One deals with methodology, evaluates the theological interpretation of scientific theories, and proposes a program for a "theology of science."

Part Two looks at the interaction of science and religion from a historical perspective. Topics include the evolution of ideas connected with the place of man in the Universe and the evolution of matter, among others.

Part Three concentrates on the "creation and science" quandary, including the Big Bang theory and the role of probability and chance in science, as well as their impact on theological questions.

Part Four looks for vestiges of transcendence in contemporary science. Creative Tension joins the Templeton library of resources contributing to the growing global dialogue on science and religion.
