Very Good.......2006-02-01
My husband and I really enjoyed this book and really felt it helpful!
Good book!.......2004-02-09

Customer Reviews:
Worthless.......2005-09-20
I thought this book was worthless and a waste of my time. It covered the obvious. I was expecting to see more remodeling ideas.
Very Useful.......2003-09-13
We are working on doing an addition to our home. We were floundering in making decisions until we came across this book. This book has pictures and ideas and before and after photos and drawings. All of this has been useful in making some decisions before we begin spending money on a contractor, architect or supplies. The text of this book is as helpful if not more so than the pictures. The text discusses types of addition, things to consider, and so on.
I would strongly suggest that anyone thinking of doing an addition consider reading this book before doing anything.
Well worth the money.
Pretty basic, but plenty of good advice.......2002-10-12
The kitchen volume of this series is much more detailed. Since there are lots of different types of additions for lots of different reasons, it's hard to get into much detail in one book. Still, the advice it does dispense strikes me as sound. It includes a checklist of things you will need to look after if you decide to act as your own contractor, or just check up on if you hire a contractor.
tis is a fine book for those in the early stages of planning an addition who have no experience of such matters.
Just what we needed.......2000-09-22
Just what we were looking for, this great little book has lots of color photos and lots of info to help my wife and me decide what kind of addition might be right for our house. We don't want to build an addition ourselves but want to get a basic plan in mind before going to an architect or builder. Thanks to the advice in this book, we think we now have a good plan in mind for an addition that won't look tacked on but will look as if it belongs to the house.
Additions: Your Guide To Planning and Remodeling.......2000-08-09
I found this book to be a helpful overview of the many consideratons that must be taken when considering an addition. There were many examples of different before and after floorplans, as well as photographs of beautifully done additions. There are different types of additions listed along with examples, and checklists to use as you progress.

Customer Reviews:
"Painting Water"--Refreshing!.......2004-02-03
As a watercolorist specializing in seascapes/waterscapes, I've read dozens of how-to books. "Painting Water" is the best of the genre and a joy to use. Joe Francis Dowden does an excellent job of presenting techniques and tips in an easy-to-understand, concise style. Where many other authors seem to omit key painting steps, Mr. Dowden is thorough and precise. His color demostrations rank among the best I've ever seen. In a mere 96 pages the author has given us an outstanding guide to the painting water all watercolorists should find invaluable.

It is destined to be a classic for collectors, photo buffs, and horse lovers alike. Customer Reviews:
Pretty picture book.......2007-05-27
This is a pretty coffee table type book. This would make a nice present for someone who loves Arabians. Johnny Johnston is a very famous equine photographer. Beautiful color photos of horses in different poses.
The Greatest Photographer of Arabian Horses........2007-03-18
Back in the 1970's I had the pleasure to see Johnny Johnston's photo demonstration at the Kenntucky Arabian Horse Fair. And I was excited to buy this book, by Johnny Johnston himself. It was exciting to see the great and famous Arabian horses he has photographed. I will treasure it as a picture-photo book for my Arabian horse library. Where I found fault with this book is it's lack of substance. Of course, Johnston couldn't feature all of the famous Arabians he has photographed in his career to date. Maybe I was expecting too much when I thought there might be some photography instruction in this book. Anyway, it is a beautiful book.
Nice but disappointing.......2006-06-04
I was expecting photos of the old greats...Muscat,Bask,Huckleberry Bey etc, also more body shots of the horses. When I saw Padron on the cover I thought "wow, I can finally find a book with some pictures of Padron in it"....not!
It is a really nice book with excellent photography of horses but not the horses I expected.
Also I agree with a previous rating that the book is too thin and could have been of more substance. Not a great tribute to such a great photographer.....too bad.
Capturing the spirit of these amazing animals.......2005-09-24
When I was a girl, I had the privilege of having Johnny Johnston take my photo as I received an award at an Arabian show. It was the best photo of my horse and I that anyone had ever taken. When I look at it now, I still think how amazing it is to have this moment frozen in time. The book is filled with personal moments like that as well as representations of the moods and talents Arabian horses are capable of, whether at rest in the pasture or in their racing colors with a jockey aboard. This book is worth every penny you spend if you are lucky enough to find a copy.
Not a great value for the price........2005-09-11
This purchase was a disappointment. It is not what one would call a true "coffee table" book, judging by the contents, the number of pages, or the over-all quality. Several of the reproductions are grainy or seem to have been included more for their landscape interest than the horses that happen to be in view. It is unpaginated and there are only 75 numbered photos. Anyone who has subscribed to one of the Arabian horse magazines for any length of time in the past has already seen the best of Johnny Johnston's horse portraiture. It took less than 30 minutes to read this thin volume and to look at each picture. There is mention on the last page of a second volume to follow. Too bad they didn't double the size of this one to start with to make it more worthwhile. I'll spend my money on carrots for the horses instead of buying the "next" book.

Book Description
This impressive book collects all 14 issues of the Mister Blank comic book series, plus the hard-to-find issue zero! Read the entire saga of Sam Smith, featuring killer robots, mime femme fatales, mad science, and global conspiracies; plus sketches and brain-pickings from creator Chris Hicks. A slick and fun adventure for the fanboy and neophyte alike.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Fun!.......2004-08-19
This roller-coaster of an adventure throws so many plot twists and characters into the mix that you might get confused if you weren't having such a good time. "Mister Blank" offers up a stylishly retro version of the present -- the story at first seems to revolve around the giant, sinister N corporation, but what could be a sad tale of a powerless everyguy soon turns into a golden-age fantasy of giant blimps and robots with really cool hats. Hicks' fluid, iconic graphics and snappy dialogue keep the reader engaged in what becomes a perilously complex plot by the final pages. This is a marvellous addition to anyone's collection, and a great entry point for folks who don't often read comics but are looking for something different.
Highly Enjoyable.......2004-03-12
Mister Blank is a great addition to the canon of sci-fi graphic novels. It is a story that has everything: robots, flying vessels, kooky scientists, power-hungry demigods, a new perspective on Creation, and of course, the presence of the everyman (Sam Smith) as the story's hero. Chris Hicks thrusts the reader from the mundane, button-pushing lifestyle of normality into the breathtaking world of excitement, reminding us that a little action every once in a while will not hurt anybody. If you seek to break through to the other side of fantastic, I highly recommend this book!
One of the best Graphic Novel/Trades I've ever come across.......2001-09-18
The first true adventure in the graphic form I have seen in a long time, MISTER BLANK proceeds in paces from the mundane to the slightly queer to the incredible to the millennia-spanning epic over the course of its path. Christopher Hicks pens the most rollicking good time I've experienced in years; his imagination is expansive. From guys and dolls to mimes and mad scientists to robots and clones to nigh-immortals and Liltih, Hicks lucidly creates and populates a world in which the true heroes are merely everyday men (with just a touch of moxie!). MISTER BLANK: THE EXHAUSTIVE COLLECTION gets my highest recommendation as an amazing tale that one can't help but return to over and again throughout the years.

Book Description
Crusading fervour gripped Europe for over 200 years, creating one of the most extraordinary, vivid episodes in world history. Whether the Crusades are regarded as the most romantic of Christian expeditions, or the last of the barbarian invasions, they have fascinated generations ever since, and their legacy of ideas and imagery has resonated through the centuries, inspiring Hollywood movies and great works of literature. Even today, to invoke the Crusades is to stir deep cultural myths, assumptions and prejudices. Yet despite their powerful hold on our imaginations, our knowledge of them remains obscured an distorted by time. Were the Crusaders motivated by spiritual rewards, or by greed? Were the Crusades an experiment in European colonialism, or a manifestation of religious love? How were they organized and founded? With customary flair and originality, Christopher Tyerman picks his way through the many debates to present a clear and lively discussion of the Crusades; bringing together issues of colonialism, cultural exchange, economic exploitation, and the relationship between past and present.
Customer Reviews:
Holy men at war.......2007-08-19
Part of the continuing fascination with the Crusades is due to the belief that we are still fighting them, that they precipitated a Christian/Islamic conflict in which we are still caught up. Truth tends to be much more complex and multi-layered than myth, which is indeed why we prefer the latter. But if you would like to get at the former, Tyerman's book is a good place to start. The most important lessons are to do with scope and context. The Crusades were much more than a series of military expeditions by Europeans to the Holy Land, they lasted for far longer than the two centuries we usually credit them with, and the wars between Christian and Islamic nations had older and deeper roots. Nor are their consequences widely understood. As this book makes clear, the Crusades had far more impact on Europe, and far less on the Near East, than is usually thought.
This Very Short Introduction is actually a reprint of Tyerman's hardback Fighting for Christendom (used, cheap copies of which, at the time of writing this review, are still available on Amazon, so you might want to check that out). One consequence is that, at 150 pages, it's longer than most in the series. Also, I think they must have simply shrunk the illustrations to fit on the page, so that you need a magnifying glass to read some of the maps.
The early chapters give an excellent overview of the subject. The later chapters, examining the impact and significance of the Crusades, and being therefore more interpretive, are somewhat heavy going at times. The author's style is good, but may be slightly too academic for some readers. And he is occasionally prone to colorful moral judgments, such as when he talks of Himmler's 'historically illiterate ghouls' relying on 'rancid imagination'. I may well share this view, but I will arrive at it myself, thank you very much.
This remains an excellent introduction to a hugely important subject, and is a worthy addition to the series.
Crusades for beginners.......2007-07-13
Highly recommended for beginners and those, like me, who don't remember very much from history class. Tyerman is a world-class expert and a clear writer. He provides helpful context in understanding how the Crusades do - and don't - resemble other wars, past and present. A very smart book.

Customer Reviews:
Plenty of fascinating information.......2005-05-20
This atlas has plenty of photos, drawings and maps. It tells about Muslim history, Muslim religious life, Islamic art, and Muslim society. It is a useful reference.
Normally, I would give such a reference five stars. But there are three outstanding questions. Namely, just how tolerant is Muslim society of non-Muslims? How tolerant is Muslim society of human rights? And how tolerant is Muslim society of truth? These are absolutely fundamental questions.
These questions could have been asked of European society in the year 1200. Or German society in 1935. And it ought to be asked about Muslim society today. After all, we can see from this book that this society is well-organized and has the power to do plenty of good. But it can also be quite destructive, and self-destructive. What does this book say about that?
Not much.
This book glosses over the problems Islam has had with human rights. It barely mentions the problems with dhimmihood. It discusses the status of women, but steers clear of taking a stand on the topic. In short, the book finds it easy to glorify anything about Islam that looks nice, but just can't bring itself to criticize anything about it. After some reflection, I've decided that this is a serious failing.
If this were the year 1935, and there were a book that had a similar difficulty in finding any fault with German society or leadership, would I give it five stars? I hope not.
Both Islamic society and human society as a whole need to respect the rights of others and value truth if they are to prosper. Now, how does the Muslim world view the West? How does it view minorities in its own lands? How does it view a small non-Muslim neighbor, namely Israel? Let's see what the book has to say about the latter question.
"Nothing brought home the continuing inferiority of the Muslim position more acutely than the existence of the state of Israel," says the book. We find that this feeling was "exacerbated by the constant flow of immigrants," by what it calls the "expansionist aims of some Israelis" and by the "humiliation" of Arab armies in the wars of 1948, 1956, and 1967. All this without explaining how these wars occurred! Again, what if a book about Germany had said such misleading things in 1935? Would I have given that five stars? Again, I hope not.
The book goes on to explain that Muslims everywhere take the war against Israel seriously. Well, if that is true, Muslim society has a big problem. Societies that base their existence not on trying to improve the lives of their citizens and becoming more prosperous but instead focus on aggressive wars against their neighbors are deserving of substantial criticism. Surely there is more to Muslim society than a goal of oppressing others! And I think that a book of this sort ought to point to ways in which more positive goals can be supported.
This book is good at much of what it does, but it falls down badly when it comes to topics such as human rights or truth.
Book Description
Innovations are adopted when users integrate them in meaningful ways into existing social practices. Histories of major technological innovations show that often the creative initiative of users and user communities becomes the determining factor in the evolution of particular innovations. The evolutionary routes of the telephone, the Internet, the World Wide Web, email, and the Linux operating system all took their developers by surprise. Articulation of these technologies as meaningful products and systems was made possible by innovative users and unintended resources. Iterative and interactive models have replaced the traditional linear model of innovation during the last decade. Yet, heroic innovators and entrepreneurs, unambiguous functionality of products, and a focus on the up-stream aspects of innovation still underlie much discussion on innovation, intellectual property rights, technology policy, and product development. Coherent conceptual, theoretical and practical conclusions from research on knowledge creation, theory of learning, history of technology, and the social basis of innovative change have rarely been made. This book argues that innovation is about creating meaning; that it is inherently social; and is grounded in existing social practices. To understand the social basis of innovation and technology development we have to move beyond the traditional product-centric view on innovations. Integrating concepts from several disciplinary perspectives and detailed analyses of the evolution of Internet-related innovations, including packet-switched computer networks, World Wide Web, and the Linux open source operating system, the book develops foundations for a new theoretical and practical understanding of innovation. For example, it shows that innovative development can occur in two qualitatively different ways, one based on evolving specialization and the other based on recombination of existing socially produced resources. The expanding communication and collaboration networks have increased the importance of the recombinatory mode making mobility of resources, sociotechnical translation mechanisms, and meaning creation in communities of practice increasingly important for innovation research and product development.
