Theories and Manifestoes of Contemporary Architecture
ASIN: 0262530309 |
Book Description
The present volume offers eloquent testimony that many of the master builders of this century have held passionate convictions regarding the philosophic and social basis of their art. Nearly every important development in the modern architectural movement began with the proclamation of these convictions in the form of a program or manifesto. The most influential of these are collected here in chronological order from 1903 to 1963. Taken together, they constitute a subjective history of modern architecture; compared with one another, their great diversity of style reveals in many cases the basic differences of attitude and temperament that produced a corresponding divergence in architectural style. In point of view, the book covers the aesthetic spectrum from right to left; from programs that rigidly generate designs down to the smallest detail to revolutionary manifestoes that call for anarchy in building form and town plan. The documents, placed in context by the editor, are also international in their range: among them are the seminal and prophetic statements of Henry van de Velde, Adolf Loos, and Bruno Taut from the early years of the century; Frank Lloyd Wright's 1910 annunciation of Organic Architecture; Gropius's original program for the Bauhaus, founded in Weimar in 1919; "Towards a New Architecture, Guiding Principles" by Le Corbusier; the formulation by Naum Gabo and Antoine Pevsner of the basic principles of Constructivism; and articles by R. Buckminster Fuller on universal architecture and the architect as world planner. Other pronouncements, some in flamboyant style, including those of Erich Mendelsohn, Hannes Meyer, Theo van Doesburg, Oskar Schlemmer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, El Lissitzky, and Louis I. Kahn. There are also a number of collective or group statements, issued in the name of movements such as CIAM, De Stijl, ABC, the Situationists, and GEAM.
Since the dramatic effectiveness of the manifesto form is usually heightened by brevity and conciseness, it has been possible to reproduce most of the documents in their entirety; only a few have been excerpted.

This book is mandatory for the library of any architect or student of architecture. It is the point from which any discussion of Modern Architecture could begin. I am hard pressed to think of a notable architect Conrad has neglected to include in this handy little book. From these pages I have seen generated a good number of arguments and debates on the state of architecture today. This is a small price to pay for such a wide array of ideas, both good and bad.

Great Basic Colored Pencil Book.......2007-05-24
This book has absolutely gorgeous drawings, something lacking in most of the other colored pencil books. It contains all the basics one would need to learn before picking up a colored pencil; everything from A to Z. The book is easy to read and fun. There are no lenghy discussions on the theories of the colored pencil medium: it gets right to the point. The second half of the book has detailed instructions on how to achieve certain textures, which I haven't seen in other books, such as glass, copper, silver, lace... all with absolutely jaw dropping examples. I bought it along with "Drawing for Right Side of the Brain", which makes a fantastic course on the mechanics of drawing itself. The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
A partial solution at best.......2007-05-17
A better title for this book would be Color Pencil Solution Book for Realistic Still Life Drawing. People and animals have merely one or two appearances each among the examples, and land- and seascapes have no representation at all. It would have been an excellent reference to showcase multiple styles also, but we see only the work of the two authors, whose styles are very similar. The topics that are presented are well presented, and if realistic still life is your thing, this book will be a good resource. But if your interest is in multiple styles and landscapes or portraits, you'll often be looking elsewhere for solutions.
Very helpful .......2007-03-08
There are so many ways to use colored pencil. I like Janie's work, she is so precise and accurate. This book helps you with various techniques. It's like a trouble shooter for your colored pencil art work.
A fabulous book.......2006-06-16
I have read many coloured pencil books, but this is the only one I have bought or kept. I refer to it often for ideas on how to combine colours or figure out a problem. Some might say that it isn't broad enough, but you have to be willing to take the basic ideas and develop your own solutions as well :-)
Better than the $175 workshop I just attended!.......2005-04-19
I just paid $175 to attend a colored pencil workshop by a woman that I thought was going to really help me with my work instead she said that this book was what got her started. I found that 99% of what this woman taught in the class was ALL from this book I already owned!! So save yourself money on workshops from so-called "famous" teachers & invest in this book!! You won't be sorry & it will teach you so much!!!! By the way, the reviewer who wants a less realistic approach to cp , there are too many cp books out there like that already (Bet Borgeson, Michael Warr, & 2 Walter Foster ones).

Excellent Primer.......2007-01-02
This book takes you through the terminology, meaning and use of the features of your digital SLR. Very easy read; been through it roughly twice myself. This is the book that got me from 'what is going on' to 'ah, I see' after purchasing a Canon 30D. After reading this book, I could at least understand the 30D manual!
The book stops at basic digital workflow. To pick up from there, have a look at the books by Scott Kelby about Photoshop. If you're looking to understand how to get sharp photos, have a look at "Digital Photography", also by Scott Kelby.
For Those Considering A Switch From Film To Digital.......2006-11-10
I think I would have purchased Chris Weston's MASTERING YOUR DIGITAL SLR simply for its photos. Just looking at the book makes the reader want to get up, get the camera, and begin shooting, but most how-to books on photography have beautiful pictures, and many times they can be sparse on content. I found that this book has both good content and inspiring shots.
The purpose of the book seems two-fold. First, it aims at convincing film users that the digital world is not as scary as many think and good, artistic photography is available using digital cameras. Throughout the book the author points out how the film and digital differ. The second purpose of this book is as an introduction to people who may be new at photography and shows the way a SLR differs from a point and shoot camera. For some of the information in the book, the information could apply to either a digital or film camera since the basics of photography are the same.
For me, the most helpful portion of the book is the third section on image processing. As a film user, primarily color prints and E-6 slides, processing meant dropping off film and visiting the lab to correct flawed but interesting photos. With digital, a home computer can become the lab. The book gives and introduction to how photos can be improved, the software and printers needed, and provides explanations of new terms. As I have started doing some repairs to images and trying to enhance others, I've found the book helpful as a beginner to using a computer to edit and enhance photos.
At one point, the author states that for many people, digital has helped rekindle their love of photography. I didn't think my love for photography needed a jump start until I purchased my new digital camera (the Nikon D70S. Now that I have, I can't wait to get out and get some shots or set up something just to use the camera. Digital is enjoyable, can be artistic, and is with considering and trying.
Excellent Digital Photography Book.......2005-11-11
This book is an expansion on his book - '500 Digital Photography Hints, Tips, and Techniques: The Easy, All-in-One Guide to those Inside Secrets for Better Digital Photography (Paperback)'. This is the best digital photography book I bought. The writing is very clear and full of tips. I especially like the topic on exposure compensation and white balance and certainly benefit a lot from the book while exploring the features on my Canon 350D. The pictures are very good (beautiful). I strongly recommend it for those new in DSLR. The book is published on very high quality gloss papers and certain worth the price as it is a very durable hard cover book.
Magnify your eyes.......2005-07-07
The pictures are nice. The quality of the book is superior.
The print is so small it is almost impossible to read and takes away from the reading experience

Parents Helper.......2001-12-14
This book is most helpful for parents in understanding their children and helping them grow into adulthood. Contrary to many parent self help books it is based on a growing body of behavioral research from psychology. It is also well written and easy to read.
Book Description
Praised and condemned for its aggressive coverage of the Vietnam War, the American press has been both commended for breaking public support and bringing the war to an end and accused of misrepresenting the nature and progress of the war. While in-depth combat coverage and the instantaneous power of television were used to challenge the war, Clarence R. Wyatt demonstrates that, more often than not, the press reported official information, statements, and views. Examining the relationship between the press and the government, Wyatt looks at how difficult it was to obtain information outside official briefings, what sort of professional constraints the press worked under, and what happened when reporters chose not to "get on the team."
"Wyatt makes the Diem period in Saigon come to life—the primitive communications, the police crackdowns, the quarrels within the news organizations between the pessimists in Saigon and the optimists in Washington and New York."—Peter Braestrup, Washington Times
"An important, readable study of the Vietnam press corps—the most maligned group of journalists in modern American history. Clarence Wyatt's insights and assessments are particularly valuable now that the media is rapidly growing in its influence on domestic and international affairs."—Peter Arnett, CNN foreign correspondent
Customer Reviews:
Detailed Exploration of Print Reporters in Vietnam.......2007-01-24
Paper Soldiers is an in-depth look at print media and those who wrote it during the Vietnam War. Wyatt has really given us a LOT of information here:
- The media build-up during America's march to war.
- How, when and with whom the government's media briefings were held.
- Relationships between reporters (including preferential treatment of those newsmen who worked for organization giving pro-government coverage).
- Life in Saigon for the hundreds of newsmen who flocked there.
- Who really was in control of the flow of information, and how it was disseminated to the public.
Yes, Wyatt leans toward the media and away from the government, but in comparison to a lot of other Vietnam War sources out there this one weighs heavy on facts and light on commentary and/or bias.
And it purposely leaves out television news (except for comparison against print content) as a subject that's already been covered in depth.
An easy, informative read.......2004-04-28
This book is, for starters, a fairly easy read, and doesn't require much background knowledge of Vietnam. While it deflates the often overglorified view of the role of the press in Vietnam, the book does seem to favor the press over the South Vietnamese and U.S. governments. Wyatt stops short of actually laying blame of any negative reporting on the government, but they are certainly presented as the main indirect source. As for the common thread of television mentioned in other reviews, his attention paid to the topic is disappointing. While television should not have been the focus of the book, it probably deserves more than the one or two pages alloted to it. Still, overall the book does an excellent job of clarifying the role of news media in the war. I would certianly recommend reading it in order to gain a more enlightened view on this topic.
If you know how to write history, you know how good this is.......2001-02-02
As a graduate student of history, I know that you cannot possibly write about every aspect of anything (especially the Vietnam War) in a book. If one were to write about everything on the Vietnam War, there would be a library full of volumes. Wyatt has chosen to focus on one aspect, one that has been ignored so often (which is why the previous reviewer can only cite one public avenue - television). Many books have been written on the role of television. The challenge to historians is to find something new, and Wyatt does a beautiful job of it. The intricacies he finds within the paper media are amazing, and his analysis never fails.
Wyatt is an incredible historian and an equally incredible man. I absolutely recommend this book.
Misses the most important argument........1997-08-13
This book just does not cover the most important issues that arise from this controversial subject. The author goes on and on citing examples of how the press and the journalists were manipulated by the individuals who were responsible for supplying them with up to date military information. I agree that these arguments are supported well and hard to refute. But the main problem I have deals with the following: DURING THE COURSE OF THE ENTIRE BOOK HE SPENDS ONLY THREE PARAGRAPHS DISCUSSING THE TELEVISION MEDIA! His argument for this is that the television coverage only represented approximately 5% (This is from memory, and all that I know for sure was that it was very much less than what anyone might expect.) of the total coverage of the events of the war. That, to me, is just a cop out as anyone who knows anything about the Vietnam conflict also knows that it was called "The Television War." Since he manages to completely avoid probably the most important aspect of press coverage from the war with such an irrelevant and weak argument for skirting it, he is left with arguments for press manipulation that hold water as well as a bucket with no bottom

Book Description
Pleasure and Guilt on the Grand Tour examines the forms of language that map Italy and the warm south as an imaginative topography of pleasure within British and French travel writing from 1600 to 1830. The book considers the Tour with reference to strategies of description and commentary, narrative and thematic orderings and arguments and assumptions about how the encounter with the foreign should be managed. Traveler's descriptions of art and landscape are set within this wider context.
