4 out of 5 stars Pretty good overview of computer architecture.......2006-01-07

Quite frankly, I was surprised at the usefulness of this Schaum's outline. I didn't think that the Schaum's outline format would work for a subject like computer architecture, but it does. All aspects of computer architecture are covered from computer arithmetic to processor design to memory systems to the advanced topic of multiprocessing. The format of the outline is a little different from the Schaum's usual formula. Each chapter consists of an "Objectives" section, followed by an introduction, followed by the various subsections of that chapter. There are examples and exercises on instruction set design, program design, block diagrams, and quite a few mathematical problems. This book is probably best suited to the advanced undergraduate or for self-study of the subject. If you are a graduate student that is using Hennessy's "Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach" the level of difficulty of the mathematical problems in that book is not matched by this one, and you should look for another source. Otherwise I recommend this guide for most students of computer architecture.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings on it, but a well balanced book.......2005-08-17

If you've never touched stained glass, this book is great. Its got accurate info on leaded and copper foil glass, and projects that progress from easy to difficult.
However the book feels a bit thin, and as mentioned already the inside margin along the book spine is less than 1/4", meaning you absolutely have to cut all the patterns out of the book with a razorblade very carefully.

If you've been doing glass a while, I would look for a different book.

    2 out of 5 stars disapointing.......2002-11-27

My biggest complaint about this book is it's design; the gutter width (the "blank' area between facing pages) is far too narrow for the columns of text closest to the binding of the book to be read with any ease whatsoever. One would literally have to tear the pages out of this book to read them without wrestling with the binding. Forget about having this book lay open as you work.

The black and white photos are of poor quality, disapointing in a book about a medium charecterized by it's vibrant colors. The designs provided with the book are, well- ugly.

The author is vague in his recomendations regarding tools and supplies, suggesting (infuriatingly) that one consult their "intructor or supplier". Step up to the plate, name names! I bought your book you weenie. What kind of soldering iron did YOU shell out your hard-earned money for?

I wouldn't have bought this book if I had seen it in a bookstore where I could pick it up and leaf through it. Ugh.

Do yourself a favor. Do a "Google" search for "stained glass instruction" there are guys willing to part with all the info in this book for free. Save eleven bucks.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's book.......2001-03-07

I bought this book as an addition to my stained glass class through the local high school. It is great. It helps fill in the gaps and reminds me of what I forgot.

This book covers both copper foil and leading. While I can't speak for the leading, it has excellent information on the copper foil method. It's information on equipment is also up to date. Though the cover is in color the rest of the book is in black and white. This is probably why a book so jam packed with information, was so inexpensive. I didn't find the black and while photos to be a negative at all. There are pictures of everything and this is great. So many books just give you patterns and words.

Its tips on glass cutting I found very useful, since you don't always run into everything in class. It saved me some broken glass. Its troubleshooting hints on soldering were handy as well.

Also there are some projects in the back. I haven't made any but they have complete instructions (pictures too) and the patterns included.

The contents since ... does not provide it, is as follows:

    1. HISTORY - GLASS Glass making, Stained glass, Jewels, Nuggets and Bevels, Color selection,

    2. TOOLS OF THE TRADE Glass cutters, Pliers, Soldering Irons and Accessories, Lead tools, Miscellaneous Equipment, Safety Equipment, Grinding Equipment,

    3. SUPPLIES Supplies, Work Surface, Lead Supplies, Copper Foil Supplies, Shopping list,

    4. GLASS CUTTING Theory,

Holding the Glass Cutter, Scoring the Glass, Breaking out the score, Scoring using a straight edge, Grozing, Cutting inside curves, Cutting Circles, Semi-circles or ovals, Cutting large sheets,

    5. WORKING WITH PATTERNS Pattern Making, Using a Pattern for Glass cutting, Photocopying your patterns,

    6. CONSTRUCTING A LEADED PANEL Introduction, Step by Step Instructions, Lead Soldering, Cementing,

    7. CONSTRUCTING A COPPER FOILED PANEL Introduction, Step by step instructions, Soldering copper foil, Solder Troubleshooting Hints,

    9. FINISHING YOUR PROJECT Hanging hardware, Spider, Vase caps, Frames, Antique Patina, Polishing or Waxing, Overlay Details, Cleaning your project, Reinforcing your window, Replacing a cracked foil piece,

    10. FULL SIZE PROJECTS Diamond panel (Bevels), Sunburst panel, Butterfly, Rainbow and Cloud, Standing Angel, Dove, Fruit Cluster, Six Sided Flower pot, Eight Sided Flower pot, Traditional cone lamp, Classic Lamp, Floral Lamp, Floral Tray with Dividers, Floral Lidded Box, Sailboat Panel, Cattail Panel, Floral Panel,

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional book for beginners.......1999-12-19

I found this book great for anyone who wants to start stained glass. Needed supplies, basic techniques reguarding every aspect to get rolling. Cutting angles, and circles, foiling and soldering, much more, I dont think I could of started without it. If your at all interested in stained glass, this book is a must. Any questions you have, this book covers it. Well worth it! Also useful as a referance manual. Good luck!

    Book Description

David Levi Strauss is a writer whose visual and intellectual sensibilities are both acute and expansive. His trenchant writings on photography and photographers have been collected for this volume from a broad range of magazines, including Aperture, Artforum, and The Nation. In Between the Eyes: Essays on Photography and Politics, Strauss tackles subjects as diverse as "Photography and Propaganda," the imagery of dreams, SebastiNo Salgado's epic social documents, and the deeply personal photographic revelations of Francesca Woodman. The timely issue of photographic legitimacy is addressed in the essay "Photography and Belief," and in "The Highest Degree of Illusion," Strauss discusses the media frenzy surrounding the events of September 11. As our world is shaped more and more by images and their slipperiness, what he calls a media "pandemonium" in its root meaning of "the place of all howling demons," we need a mind and voice like Levi Strauss's to bring clarity to our vision.

5 out of 5 stars An anthology of stimulating, serious-minded essays about the interplay of photography and politics.......2006-02-06

New York writer, critic, and poet David Levi Strauss presents, Between The Eyes: Essays On Photography And Politics, an anthology of stimulating, serious-minded essays about the interplay of photography and politics, as well as hot-button topics and lasting social issues pertaining to both. A handful of chapters are not independent essays per se, but rather interviews with experienced photographers. From "Where the Camera Cannot Go" to "A Threnody for Street Kids", "Photography and Propaganda" and much more, each writing lays bare the core of photography and politics - or sometimes, the core of the author. From true stories of optimistic photographers struggling to use their craft to help the oppressed, to the stunning impact that cameras any layperson can easily use have had upon photography as a whole, Between The Eyes is an insightful, contemplative, tightly written set of discussions, illustrated with a handful of well-chosen photographic images.

The Great and Powerful Mickey is perhaps the only shared muse of artists Charles Schulz, Andy Warhol, Maurice Sendak, Keith Haring, R. Crumb, and pop star Michael Jackson. This whimsical, often surprising collection of 100 full-color images reflects the diverse styles of world-renowned artists, illustrators, animators, sculptors, cartoonists, and designers--united in theme by the world's favorite rodent. John Updike explains in the introduction, "It's all in the ears. When Mickey Mouse was born, in 1928, the world of early cartoon animation was filled with two-legged zoomorphic humanoids, whose strange half-black faces were distinguished one from another chiefly by the ears." He goes on to point out that Mickey Mouse's ears--in defiance of three-dimensional space--are always shown as two perfectly round circles, no matter the angle at which he holds his head, and discloses that if it weren't for Disney's wife Lillian, Mickey might have been named Mortimer. Whether you're an art lover or Mickey Mouse fan, this compilation is sure to fascinate you.

This is a delightful little tome that every artist and wanna be artist would enjoy. Only about the size of a small paperback, but the book is chucky jam full of wonderful art. Mickey, that ever loving mouse as portrayed by the world's best artists. My favorite is Andy Warhol's painting. I like Mark Newgarden's drawing of Mickey on line paper and I also like Ben Verkaaik's oil on wood of Mickey. Heck I like 'em all. I'm a huge Mickey and Disney fan and if that description fits you, you'll enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating book of an academic pioneer and his work.......2002-04-09

Seeing Language In Sign: The Work Of William C. Stokoe by Jane Maher (Assistant Professor, Basic Education Program, Nassau Community College, Garden City, New York) is an informed and informative examination of the life and ground breaking work of William Stokoe, the man who dared to challenge the commonly held belief that sign language is not a true "language" in and of itself. Stokoe's study and intense research into the beauty, complexity, and linguistic formatives of what would come to be called American Sign Language forever transformed how the linguistic community would view the language of the deaf. A fascinating book of an academic pioneer and his work, Seeing Language In Sign is a highly recommended and invaluable addition to Linguistic Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

5 out of 5 stars Seeing Language in Sign.......2000-12-20

Seeing Language in Sign, by Jane Maher, held my attention to the last page. It is a true story about one of the most influencial hearing individuals in Deaf Society. William Stokoe was a true hero in his brilliance, committment and sacrifices to bring the true nature of American Sign Language to light. His story is inspiring and infuriating, as the reader learns of the obsticles placed in Stokoe's way as he strove to prove that ASL is a true language, full of all the richness and bredth of any spoken language. I was moved to tears several times and as I read the last page I wanted to meet this incredible man in person. The author wrote in such a manner that I felt as though I knew him personally. In my opinion, he deserves the Nobel Prize in Education. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who is serious about understanding ASL and Deaf Culture.

5 out of 5 stars Essential, comforting work for anyone facing death or loss.......1997-04-12

After Death is a book that can offer not only solace but meaning to anyone facing death, their own or that of a loved one. We are used to thinking of dying as an unalterably lonely experience, but with this book as a companion it need not be. There is great comfort in discovering the depth and range of how our fellow humans imagine, understand, and, in some cultures, even know the after-death.

As important as the content, to me, is the author's voice-a voice of great warmth, compassion, and intelligence. As one reads this book, one feels more and more deeply the sense of human kinship in this journey-a profound antidote to loneliness and fear. I found this to be a truly transformative work.

5 out of 5 stars Breakthrough research on the dying process and beyond.......1997-04-07

Original breakthrough research that crosses the barriers of anthropology, theology, psychology and cross-cultural views of the dying process and beyond. Dr. Miller is a gifter writer and researcher who provides the entree for both the skeptic and the inquisitive to explore the most profound issues that we will all eventually confront. She accomplishes accomplishes her goal while providing the reader with extraordinary insights into alternative perceptions of life and after death. I could not put this inspirational book down until I read the final words, "we can only imagine.&quot

5 out of 5 stars fascinating and compelling look at where we go after death.......1997-03-16

This readable, page turner engages the reader from the start in asking the fundamental question of life, what begins after death? The author is widely traveled and well-versed in comparative religions and belief systems. Written in an anecdotal and open style, the author states no positions but offers different views from Native American philosophies to Brazilian religious beliefs. A must read for anyone with the smallest sense of curiosity about how our global neighbors wrestle with the place/voyage after death. Great gift for New Agers to seniors to skeptics and saints

This book is filled with interesting anecdotes and tidbits of information. However, the lack of footnotes and documentation for much of the content is horrendous.

5 out of 5 stars Solid history on the frontier soldier.......2000-06-27

As I cast about for research material for an upcoming book, several American Indian War experts recommended Don Rickey's book as the "Bible" on the frontier soldier's life. I am not an Indian War buff, but I can tell you this book is chocked full of details and insights that are not likely to be found collected in any other single volume.

The book is broken down into logical chapters, from a description of the Western troubles to the typical routines of the soldiers' discharges. We are treated to what might be some of the last in-depth interviews with Indian War veterans and, as has been pointed out, we begin to get a feel of the frontier soldier's daily life as 99 percent boredom and physical labor and 1 percent terror.

Many books have been written around the edges of this subject, and several were awful in their historical value. But this is a solid history, well-researched and full of interesting anecdotes to boot!

4 out of 5 stars An in-depth look at the Soldiers serving in the west........1998-11-17

This book really enlightens the reader with interesting personal narratives. The book also dispells the myth of a "John Wayne, She wore a Yellow Ribbon" frontier Army. It picks up from the end of the Civil War and leads you straight into the Spanish American War. A wonderful book for those interested in in the daily lives of the soldiers form typical daily lives to military justice. This book also helped with my summer Interpretation job at Fort Mackinac. Book Description

With the birth of the cloned sheep named "Dolly," a technique once found only in science fiction has suddenly become reality, along with a host of new ethical, social, religious, and public policy dilemmas. What potential benefits could cloning research offer for the treatment of human disease? How do the scientific facts differ from the public perception of cloning? Will it be possible to clone human beings in the near future, and if so, for what purpose? Are scientists playing God? Should the government regulate such research?

These are just a few of the profound questions addressed in this timely collection of the most significant articles on the subject of cloning. Michael Ruse and Aryne Sheppard have selected the work of leading scientists, medical ethicists, healthcare specialists, philosophers, and representatives of various religous denominations to create an overview of the many issues raised by this amazing scientific advance.

Contributors include: Justine Burley, Ronald Cole-Turner, David Concar, David Elliot, Walter Glannon, Stephen Jay Gould, John Harris, Soren Holm, Axel Kahn, Leon R., Kass, A. J. Kind, Philip Kitcher, Arlene Judith Klotzko, J. H. Lipschutz, Harry M. Meade, Bernard E. Rollin, Julian Savulescu, A. E. Schnieke, Mary Warnock, Robert Williamson, Ian Wilmut, and Robert Winston.

In breadth of coverage and quality of the contributions, there is no comparable volume to this excellent collection on one of the most important issues of this century.
