What I like best about this book is how it shows you to organize your space in ways that deflect from feeling claustrophobic. All the rooms are tasteful and comfortable, and show you that you don't need a lot of expensive "stuff" to have a fantastic small space.

Read the title really careful and you will see that it is not about living simply in a small space, but more like living with a lot of stuff in a small space.
Since I was seriously looking for a book on Zen or Danish, Swedish simple design in a small space I wanted to check the book out. Thankfully for what I was looking for there were enough examples like The Zones chapter where Zen simplicity examples abound.
Same for the chapter titled Solutions where toward the end of the chapter some nice examples are shown and written about.
Also like page 137 onward where the author lists dozens of resources on where to get more information on examples shown in the photographs.
Less is More.......2006-01-01
One of the best interior design books I enjoy over and over again is Smallspaces. Photograhs are good and interiors are very inspirational and interesting. This book shows you how you get most of your space even its small. After you have read this book you might wonder do i need bigger apartment (if you're dreaming about it) at all?
Inspiring book w/great photos & ideas.......2005-05-04
For all us wannabe designers, this book is inspiring and educational. The photos really give you an idea of how all aspects of a space work together. I especially liked the author's emphasis on storage solutions, which anyone on any budget can take advantage of (though this book tends to focus on apartments that were designed from scratch). As with most of these books, it's mostly apartments that are analyzed, but the book does include a rowhouse that is decorated in a (shock!) tradition style instead of contemporary, which I found refreshing. Not the kind of book you'll read cover to cover, but one you'll pick up and find something new each time.

I ranked this 4th best of 7 "decorating small spaces" books I bought. One unit featured in it had enough useable ideas for me
that it justified its price. Pros: great photos & blueprints; variety of sizes (300-1,000 sq ft) & tastes shown. Cons: European-NY exclusivity (more on this in my NOTE in review of "Small Apartments"); many featured homes shriek "interior designer," i.e., all about aesthetics rather than liveability (pebble floors, molded plastic chairs, etc.). Speaking of impractical: one of the 8 featured homes is a modernist London dwelling, 11-and-a-half ft. wide, seven stories high, with one room per floor. She should have decorated the owner's elevator, as that must be where he spends all his time.

I really tried to like this book but I just could not. Especially for someone who is new to drawing like myself it was a waste of money . This book is more suitable for an experienced artist.
The Best Drawing Book I've Seen.......2006-07-27
This is the book that really helped me! The other one I like is the old standard "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." But for practical, usable exercises that will give you immediate results, this is definitely the book to have! Since I didn't have any of Hammond's previous books, there was no problem for me with repitition of material. I love that she is very specific in naming materials and explaining why she uses certain brands of materials vs. others. If you get only one drawing book, this should be it!

The book is quite awesome. I bought it just before I started taking a college art class and I find that it helps me more than the teacher does! I'm looking forward to buying more of Lee Hammond's books. I have already purchased her Lifelike Drawing and Drawing Realistic Pets: From Photographs, which are both equally awesome.

She is one of my favorite authors on this subject. Her writing is simple and she doesn't talk you to death. It is very easy to follow all the exercises.

Art of the Scrapbook.......2003-08-06
This book isn't just a book that shows some examples and gives you some templates and says "go do this"... This is a book that any true artist would love to have in their collection. It gives complete instructions on construction of paper arts and all facets of the craft. There are more projects in this book than I have found in any other book on the subject. The projects are explained with clarity and I learned how to do things I would have had to take a class to learn. The author is a real artist not just a craft person. I recommend this book to anyone that wants to take this craft to another level.

I own quite a few scrapbooking and bookmaking books, and this is the one that got me hooked. I absolutely love this book. The tools and materials needed lists were extremely helpful in getting me started. The author also shows some terrific and easy techniques that I haven't seen in other books. The gallery sections are incredible -- beautiful without being completely way out there. Lots of practical ideas for projects. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
Thorough yet easy to follow instructions.......2001-08-15
As a long-time rubber stamper, I began making books earlier this year. This book has great instructions for all different book designs, as well as decorating techniques. I found the instructions easy to follow and well detailed. This is a much used resource in my craft book library.
Heavy on art, light on scrapbook.......2001-02-28
This book is a beautiful, artistic work on book making/binding. It's thorough, beginner-friendly, and has attractive projects. I only have one problem with it: the title. I would think that the title would more prominently announce something about bookmaking, and not use the word scrapbook (since these days, scrapbooking has grown in popularity, and is a completely different hobby).
That said, this book is an excellent introduction work to bookbinding. It has instructions on many different types of book bindings (from simple to more challenging), as well as much info on decorations for your book covers (marbling, quilling, and more). The book is written in an encouraging, informative tone, with the emphasis on craftsmanship and artistic expression. The text is accompanied by full-color pictures of handmade books by various artists around the country.
This book is an excellent introduction to bookbinding, and will certainly whet your appetite for all sorts of exciting artistic expression.
For those who want to go beyond "plain" scrapbooks.......2000-11-19
For those who wish to take the hobby of scrapbooking to the level of fine art, this book will provide plenty of inspiration. Covering everything from numerous ways to create and bind a scrapbook from "scratch" to techniques for making your own decorative paper, it's all within the covers of the book.
Many different methods of bookbinding are presented in thorough detail moving from simple to more complex. Paper making and decorative paper techniques, such as batik and various print or collage techniques are presented as well.
Very innovative ideas for ways to display your special photos are shown as well. Samples of pages are unlike any I've seen elsewhere, and are always eye-catching. This book is not one for those who wish to speed scrap, but if you want to create a one-of-a-kind album, or a unique layout for special photos, look to "The Art of the Scrapbook" for ideas.

This book is the BEST!!!! It's so funny when I first read it, I felt like I was going to COMPLETELY LAUGH MY HEAD OFF!! Some examples of the cartoons that are in this book are- a necklace that is made out of baby teeth, a woman who blows her face off with a hair drier, and a man who juggles at the dinner table with meatballs! So see what I mean? This book is TOTALLY HILLARIOUS!! So buy this book- NOW!

This book is an underrated classic. You'll understand why postmodernism has led to a cynical view of heroes and why that's not a good thing. As Mr. Roche points out, a country and it's citizenry need heroes to inspire and bring out the best in us. As Roche writes: "Greater love hath no man... Risking or laying down one's life to save another is heroism laid bare. It is a purely sefless and beneficent act. There is no more striking example of our unique human contact with an Eternal Good."
We are living in an age of anti-heroism and it's why our culture has been eroding before our eyes. This book may be 20 years old, but its message is vital, now more than ever.

Bretschneider work is an account of the ancient historical and geographical accounts of the Chinese, as far as they treat of nations, countries and events spoken of also by western writers. These observations are in turn compared with the writings of western authors from the middle ages. The narratives are written by travelers to western Asia in the Mongelperiod and were originally written in the 13th century. The paper into various chapters, including the following 1. Writings of eastern and western authors to Mongolia. 2. An account of the Kara-khitai, an interesting nation originating in eastern Asia that in the 12th century dominated over the whole of central Asia. 3. Accounts found in Chinese and Mongol medieval works with respect to the Mohommedans. 4. The Record of military doings of the Mongols in the far west. ! 5. An explanation of an ancient Chinese map of western and central Asia, dating from the first half of the 14th century. Extremely rare book, only six copies appearing in library holdings in the United States. To our knowledge not previous reprinted.
