MORE please!.......2003-04-08
Living in Ontario, Canada and designing an adobe like home is difficult and we need lots of inspirational books. This one is highly valued in our home during this design period and we recommend this book for anyone in our circumstances. We found it inspirational and useful to our architect who has little exposure to the southwestern style. But...we need more books just like this and find it difficult to buy a book on your site without you providing additional information about the book...for exmample...peeks inside at some of the photographs. That would be so useful. But don't hesitate to order this one; it is well worth the investment.
I'd give it a C minus.......2001-11-13
Given my passion for the southwest, I expected to love this book, but I didn't. Certainly I found the photos lovely, but somehow the overall package does not convey the excitement, spirituality, and drama of the region. In other words, the book is a little flat. And what I expected to be a good read turned out to be more of an encyclopedia style rundown of facts (in other words, boring). The book comes off as a cold report on what is in fact a fabulously exciting and inspiring region.
Disappointing.......2001-10-09
The pictures are pretty but the book is a boring read.
southwest style.......2001-08-24
Extremely beautiful and informative. Finally a substantive look at the style of the southwest.
Southwest Style: A Home-Lover's Guide to Architecture and De.......2001-07-13
I do NOT find this book limiting; when searching for decorating style of the SW; there is so FEW out there, it is refreshing to find one that covers such a broad area of the SW. I LOVE THIS book...Normal decorating books have so LITTLE of this area and for those of us who LOVE IT, the book is wonderful. REFRESHING and NOT CUTESY! At present I live in the Midwest of America and it is so limiting to NEW ideas so often. Our local library had this book, and I was searching to see how many others were out there, not many... so I MAY end having to OWN this book.
Thank you for carrying this as well as several others pertaining to this area of the USA.

A Masterful Resource Written by a Master - THE Source on Drawing Realistic Clothing.......2007-08-08
Burne Hogarth was one of the very first artists I came across when I began teaching myself to draw, and Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery is one of the very first of his books that I purchased. Very few books that I have come across deal with the folding and wrinkling of cloth and other materials in so meticulous and compendious a manner as does Hogarth. Wirtten less as a 'how-to' and more as a series of well-designed examples, Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery covers nearly every kind of clothing wrinkles one might think of, and provides exceptionally detailed illustrations to show you how you can apply these lessons to your own work. While other books give short shrift to drawing realistic-looking clothes, this one is simply THE only source you will need on how to give your characters' costumes that extra pop of realism. An indispensible book, and highly recommended.
Student Artist-Modeler-Animator:.......2007-06-08
As most Hogarth's books, this one is not at the least descriptive. The drawings are a bit more frequent, and you may find it useful. Some of the drawing I did not enjoy too much, but, all-in-all, they still demonstrate the proper material. The author provides 4 decent approaches to the illustration of wrinkles in different situations, mostly differenting dependent on the type of physical movement the character (human, in all cases) makes. Most of the book talks about drapery, but there is some information on how to apply the same principles onto skin.
This is a must-have for a character designer, whether you work in 2D or 3D. It will provide a beginning artist with the basic understanding of the dynamics of drapery and clothes, but it won't be much use for a medium-to-experienced studio artist, especially when she/he draws from life.
Definitive, but pricey considering alternatives that exist........2006-11-25
I owned this book for years, and as a picture reference it covers every conceivable wrinkle and drapery situation. But when I had to sell off most of my library, I faced the fact that I simply never used this book. The copious but maddeningly abstract text and little arrows never succeeded in helping me think about wrinkles so that I could predict them and do them without reference. And if you're just copying them for reference, you'd really want many more pictures of commonplace clothings rather than one each of every possible kind of clothing. The truth is, leafing through a bunch of magazines or stop-framing DVDs is more likely to get you exactly what you want.
And yet, while seeking to revive my cartooning habit recently, I found I did want a printed reference on clothing wrinkles -- but only if it were cheap. Following the suggestion of another commenter here, I got a copy of Jack Hamm's Drawing the Head and Figure, used, for under five bucks. And I highly recommend it. The twenty-ish pages on clothing wrinkles at the end of the book are obviously not as definitive as Hogarth's treatment, but they are aimed dead-on at the practical needs of the contemporary artist (and fortunately, men's clothes have not changed that much in the decades since it was written -- at least not from the wrinkle standpoint). It's at least as good a practical guide on this subject, and includes a wealth of material on similar topics that somehow get skipped in most art books -- men's and women's shoes, for instance. For five bucks or less, a much better value than the Hogarth. Though I can't rate the Hogarth below four stars, and understand five: he does his utmost to deliver, and the illustrations are marvelous.
Drawing clothing, wrinkles & drapery from *memory*..........2006-05-05
Probably the *easiest* way to learn to draw clothing is to copy photos right along with pictures by our own favorite artists. That *seems* to be the most direct approach. But couldn't we profit from a book on this subject? The answer here simply is- Yes!
This is intermediate info here- a *much* better book for beginners is Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm. It contains a brief yet excellent section on clothing, wrinkles & drapery, in addition to the obvious figure drawing skills- my highest recommendation!
Burne Hogarth's accomplishment here includes a brand-new vocabulary for identifying & describing pretty much all possible wrinkles. He does more than describing with words- he *depicts*. The entire book is drawn with a red-orange pencil-crayon, and all drawings are by Hogarth himself. Packed with illustrations- every single page has a drawing on it- most include instructions-words. It's basically learning by example here; these drawings are meant to be copied. Yes, many examples are a bit overly wrinkled, as some have pointed out, but I think he does this in a positive way. What good is a book on wrinkles if the drawings barely show any? This book is great for fashion artists and anyone concerned with drawing from memory. It's not entirely necessary for everyone however; moderately recommended.
Other books worth considering: Jack Hamm's Drawing the Head and Figure; Barbara Bradley's Drawing People: How to Portray the Clothed Figure; George Bridgman's Drawing the Draped Figure; and even some of the many Japanese animation & comicbook instructionals, like How to Draw Manga: Bishoujo Around the World by Hikaru Hayashi. Check 'em out!
Exagerrated for better understanding.......2006-03-28
I can only recommend this book to every artist out there, because it's the only one that covers this very important subject -- how to draw clothed human figure effectively. And not just sitting or posing human figure, but a figure in complex motion.
Let's face it; this subject is not for beginners. You need to have some clue and love for drawing. Also, this book book is even challenging for artist used to paint and draw lifeless poses and naked figures. Yes, Burne Hogarth challenges all of them, same as Michelangelo challenged and criticized Tizian, emphasizing Tizian's lack of will to study drawing and human anatomy. Although one of the greatest painters and masters of color in human history, Tizian had his shortcomings in the eyes of Michelangelo. Just compare their two distinctive styles and you will understand why.
Drawings in this book are well presented but exagerrated for our better understanding. Simply, if we don't understand how our body moves under the cloth, we'll have no idea how to render wrinkles and drapery. In other words, this books gives understanding, sets the basic principles and rules, and encourages us to study subject matter profoundly.
Art is not easy. Drawing human figure is difficult, but drawing clothed human figure is even more difficult, because wrinkles will show all the shortcomings in our artistic skills. Drawing better and drawing more, and exploring great references such as this book will make us better artist in all respects.

Book Description
Daring, erotic, witty, provocative-Uwe Kempen knows how to play with the viewers' expectations, how to lead them along in sometimes irritating ways, how to surprise them anew with every picture. Instead of working in perfectly illuminated studios, he chose to stage his models directly in our everyday world. His models are part of our environment. We cannot escape their tempting presence because they are part of our surroundings. Their nudity in our normal world creates and exciting tension which the photographer translates into a wide range of thrilling, erotic emotions. Uwe Kempen likes to play with the feelings and intimate fantasies of the viewer and of the models who enjoy the game of being staged and photographed. Kempen's models are a metaphor for the sensuous element in our everyday surroundings, for the erotic element in our lives. If we are receptive of this natural eroticism, it will always be there to enrich our lives with its sensuality, excitement, and its very special thrill. Uwe Kempen was born in 1960. He lives and works in Berlin. In 1982 and 1986 he won the award for young photography at the Photokina Cologne. His first photography exhibition took place in 1990 in Krefeld. In 1996 he exposed his erotic work for the first time Cologne.

Form's confession.......2005-05-19
Some autobiographers devise fantasies that unwittingly divulge facts. In this autobiographical Work and Academic Politics, William H. Form devises the fantasy that academic sociology is a mediaeval guild. A guild is a kind of trade association in old Europe that enforced a trade monopoly and opposed nontraditional technologies. The unintentionally divulged fact is that sociology is merely an academic trade association operating like a guild instead of a science.
Form is not the only sociologist to use the metaphor of the guild, although he is the only one to my knowledge to employ it approvingly. In the "Introduction" to their book, Sociology on Trial, Maurice Stein and Arthur Vidich say that sociologists form professional associations organized to perform the classical functions of a guild - regulation of admission, monopolization of employment opportunity, control and expansion of marketing, and the development of occult terminologies - with the result that the task of sociology gets lost. Form's book amounts to a confession of guilt in sociology's trial.
As a nonsociologist let me submit the following brief as an amicus curiae in this trial: I speak as a witness from personal experience. In 1981 I had submitted a paper to the American Sociological Review, the official journal of the American Sociological Association, while Form was editor. The paper set forth a dynamic model estimated statistically over fifty years of sociologically relevant historical data collected by U.S. government, and developed mechanically with an artificial-intelligence discovery system. In simulations the model exhibited damped oscillations converging in a stable equilibrium growth path, which is due to intergenerational negative-feedback cultural lags among the interacting social institutions. It shows empirically that the five basic institutions of our macrosociety interact to promote macrosocial consensus stability, if per capita real gross domestic product grows at four percent or more annually, and if internal migration is unrestricted so the labor force can exploit economic opportunities.
Form rejected the paper with two referee criticisms. The first showed abysmal ignorance of academic philosophy of science. The second stated that the paper did not reflect sociology's traditions and called it an "empiricist venture". I submitted replies, to which Form responded citing his "folkways". In his Work and Academic Politics Form summarizes his own alternative "organizational approach" to institutional analysis, which exhibits no empirical modeling.
I believe that Form's indulging in his Mediaeval guild fantasy while editor of the American Sociological Review has had a debilitating effect on American academic sociology's information pool comparable to that of incest on the gene pool of a small isolated aboriginal tribe. Sociological thought is inbred and conformist. Academic sociologists need remedial education in mathematics, statistics, computer systems, and most importantly philosophy of science. I believe that this book is too self-serving to be interesting even to historians of sociology. In fact I believe that it is worthless. The sociologist reader would benefit more from an undergraduate course in philosophy of science.
Readers interested in my further comments are invited to read my book titled History of Twentieth-Century Philosophy of Science at my web site philsci, and to read my other reviews on the Amazon web site.

Book Description
The Japanese treatment of prisoners of war in World War II has been written about before, but only with this chronicle will readers come to appreciate the true dimensions of the Allied POW experience at sea. It is a disturbing story that for many made the Bataan Death March pale by comparison. The survivors describe their ordeal in the Japanese hellships as the absolute worst experience of their captivity. Crammed by the thousands into the holds of ships and moved from island to island and put to work, they endured all the horrors of the prison camps magnified ten-fold.
Gregory Michno draws on American, British, Australian, and Dutch POW accounts as well as Japanese convoy histories, recently declassified radio intelligence reports, and a wealth of archival sources to present for the first time a detailed picture of what happened and the extent of the prisoners involved. His findings are startling. More than 150,000 Allied prisoners were transported in the hellships with more than 21,000 fatalities. While many of the deaths were attributable to beatings, starvation, disease, and lack of food and water, the most, Michno reports, were caused by Allied bombs, bullets, and torpedoes. He further reports that this so-called friendly fire was not always accidental--apparently at times it was more important to sink Japanese ships than to worry about POWs. The statistics led Michno to conclude that it was more lethal to be a prisoner on the Japanese hellships than a U.S. Marine fighting in the campaign. His careful examination of the role of U.S. submarines in the sinkings and the rescue of POWs makes yet another significant contribution to the history of the war in the Pacific.
Customer Reviews:
A comprehensively researched masterpiece.......2006-07-27
Gregory Michno has written what will surely become the reference work on hell ship voyages. Impeccably referenced throughout, with a bibliographic section that will keep me busy for years chasing up articles referred to in his research notes. Gregory draws on recently declassified American and Japanese records of their combined activities and inhumanities committed during desperate times - A master of his topic, with objective analysis revealing that neither side was truly innocent in creating hell on the high seas. At times a harrowing, poignant read. This is a 'must have' book for anyone interested in WWII history.
Man's Inhumanity to Man.......2002-03-10
Author Michno covers a subject that has been neglected in World War II history, namely prisoners of war held on Japanese ships on the Pacific Ocean. The book is over 300 pages of the depressing conditions that POW's faced at the hands of the Japanese on their hellships. Prisoners who were deprived of water, food, and sanitary conditions and subjected to executions by their captors make for a very hellish read. It appears that those who survived were those who developed an intense hatred for their captors. Those who felt sorry for themselves were not among the survivors. This is a subject that has apparently been neglected in World War II history and the author says the Japanese continue to deny or cover up their atrocities. I found it difficult to continue reading such horrific treatment of human beings for over 300 pages, but, nevertheless, this is a story that has been needed to be told.
A sobering, comprehensive, superly written & accurate survey.......2001-10-11
Death On The Hellships: Prisoners At Sea In The Pacific War is a sobering, comprehensive, superly written and accurate survey of life and death as an Allied prisoner of war aboard the Japanese submarines, under conditions as hellish as any concentration camp. More that 126,000 prisoners were transported on these hellships with more than 21,000 fatalities, due to beatings, starvation, disease, and worst of all, friendly fire. The statistics lead author Gregory Michno to conclude that it was more dangerous to be a prisoner on Japanese hellships than to be an active U.S. marine in the campaign. Disturbing in its detail, Death On The Hellships is a vivid and unforgettable reminder of the horrors of war and an invaluable contribution to 20th Century military history collections.
A harrowing history of a maritime Dante's Inferno.......2001-08-13
Gregory Michno's "Death on the Hellships: Prisoners at Sea in the Pacific War" is a harrowing account of one of the nearly forgotten stories of World War Two - the experiences of Allied POW's aboard Japanese transport ships. These prisoners, most of them captured during the early months of the war in the Pacific, passed through nearly unimaginable horrors, brutally mistreated by their captors, subjected to starvation, beatings, and deprivation of water, and held in crowded, grossly unsanitary conditions. And they often fell victim to Allied torpedoes and bombs. More than 20,000 Allied POW's died at sea, most of them when the transport ships carrying them were attacked by U.S. submarines and aircraft. Although Allied headquarters often knew of the presence of POW's aboard vessels targeted for attack through radio interception and code breaking, the general policy was to sink the ships anyway, evidently on the basis that the interdiction of critical strategic materials was more important in the long run than the deaths of prisoners-of-war.
"Death on the Hellships" is a veritable Dante's Inferno at sea, the tragedies chronicled month by month. Michno's research into previously classified records and with survivor first-hand accounts far surpasses that of anyone who has touched upon this topic before, and he deserves great credit for rescuing this important story before it was lost forever in the fog of the past. It is not a tale for the faint-hearted. Although the subject covers too broad a time and geographical area to permit in-depth narratives of every prison ship voyage, Michno does provide a wealth of survivor stories illustrating the experiences of these unfortunate men and women. Anyone who reads the history of this tragic episode of modern war will not soon forget it.
Evil of the Japanese- well documented.......2001-08-10
"Death on the Hellships" is a classic in research and documentation. Cross referencing from American records at the National Archives, interviews with Allied POWs who survived these nightmarish voyages, and the convoy records of the Japanese, Michno reveals a picture of depravity and horror. The sad truth is that the American Intelligence knew of almost convoy and merchant ship movement through spies and code breaking. Military intelligence even knew the cargo, including ships containing POWS. It was a "dirty little secret" that is only now available from the declassified records. A deliberate decision was made to withhold the fact from submarine commanders that specific ships and convoys contained prisoners. The decision was made "to sink them all" rather than take a chance the Japanese would realize their codes were broken. Submarine commanders, pledged to lifelong secrecy, knew the location and course of almost every Japanese ship. Many jokingly complained that, "The Japanese ship was ten minutes late.," before he was sunk. Michno masterfully documents and relates the experiences of those who suffered in the Hellships as they were carried to serve as slaves for Japanese industrial companies who now snub any thought of an apology or compensation. A compelling and well written classic for the bookshelf of any historian.
