Beautifully Photographed Idea Book.......2006-01-19

With the increasing understanding of the importance of exercise, has also come the understanding that the old fashioned gym like Rocky might have used, upstairs over the pool hall, has given way to places designed to attract the upper scale clientelle of today.

Ms. Castillo has carefully collected a set of photographs of newly built spa and health clubs from around the world. Literally from all over the world: Australia, Vienna, Canada, China, all over Europe. These spa's represent what the best architects are doing in this area. The book is an idea book for people interested in the area. This would include no only architects, but people like hotel management, spa operators, or even the home owner looking to put in his own unit.

For me two points really stand out in these designs:

1. The integration of the new, almost exoctic spa into a standard hotel design, or perhaps fit into an existing building of any age or architecture.

2. The large use of water. This can be swiming pools, fountains, hot tubs or whatever. It seems that water is an integral part of the new spa.

Beautiful photographs carefully selected to illustrate what can be done.

This is an excellent knmihimo book for beginners and the experienced. It outlines everything in detail and steps you through the process. It is also filled with wonderful colorful pictures. There are many patterns provided for variety as well. Highly recommended.

This book is a wonderful reference for anyone with a little experience in Kumihimo braiding and moderate experience in beading. The illustrations are beautiful and the technique diagrams easy to understand. Highly recommend this for bead and fiber artists wanting to expand their knowledge and ideas.

Best lanyard book ever seen.......2000-11-10

This book and everything it includes is the best and when you open the package and get everything out the book shows you exactly what to do and you can't mess up. It is so simple that even my dad can do it you can make lanyards, keychains, bead animals, bracelets, and anything else that you can make using the supplies included. It is definately the best kit I have ever seen.

An excellent and valued addition to my beading bookshelf!!.......2002-06-12

I bought this book after looking at it for about 20 seconds. I was not disappointed. Its' main topic is making tassels out of beads, however in the course of describing, making, and displaying her creations in this book, there arise a lot of different and unusual tricks, techniques and ways with beads. This book is great if you want to make beaded tassels; if you work with beads and need some new ideas and inspirations; or, if the creative well is running dry and you need to graze in some new territory. I do work with beads in peyote, sculptural peyote, Ndebele, brickstitch, squarestitch and wired floral work. I found the instructions in this book for the beading techniques quite good, however, if you have no experience in the above techniques and intend to learn the techniques from this book I don't think that will work. You do need prior knowledge with at least peyote stitch and brick stitch to make many, but not all of the tassels described. Other than that, which is more of a heads up than a critisism, I would highly recommend this book to any and all beadworkers and creative persons everywhere. An excellent and valued addition to my beading bookshelf.

Wow! The authors really know their stuff! There is so much information in this book it's scary. This book is a must-read for anyone who takes Photoshop seriously. Sure, it was written years ago when Photoshop was at version 4, and sure the writing gets a bit corny at times, but it is still a "killer app" among Photoshop books.

Unbeatable Photoshop theory.......2002-12-10

If you aspire to be a hardcore Photoshop user, this book is probably the one you want above all others. It's not a step-by-step tutorial, a mere reference book, or a book that leads you through the tools and various functions of the software. Instead it discusses the fundamental concepts you need to know to use Photoshop to its fullest. Some statements in the book are outdated, but fortunately, they are usually statements of opinion and occur only in a few places. Most of the book is still applicable since Photoshop today still has channels, alpha channels, paths, layers, and calculations. This book hasn't been updated since it was written in 1998, but it really doesn't need to be. It's not about how to use particular tools and new features. It's about how to think with Photoshop. And it's deep enough to read over and over for reference. I would encourage even beginner Photoshop users to read this book if they are really committed, especially if they want to learn about compositing. By the end of this book, you'll be able to understand how Photoshop does what it does, and why it is such a powerful program.

I hate the books that only talk about particular special effects and how to achieve them, without telling you why it should be done that way. With Photoshop, you want to be in control. This book allows to be in control. It will explain exactly what's going on behind the scenes. After reading this book, I felt like being a Photoshop guru. It was nice.

A must have book on channel operations.......2002-05-21

I'm a student learning Photoshop and I must say this is one of the best Photoshop books I have ever come across. The authors explain every aspect in a detailed and engaging way. In other books, I may read a chapter and understand how to do something but I often ask why it's done that way. This is an outstanding book, and has definitely broadened my fathering awareness and outlook. I was so impressed with the book that I purchased a 2nd copy for a busy work colleague who I felt might get as much out of the book as I did.

It's a great read, with lots of humour, touching stories, practical advice, and admissions of mistakes from a wide variety of Australian dads (John Howard, Mick Malthouse, busy professionals, plumbers, you name it...) and their families.

In terms of long term impact, in the top 10 books I have read.

Quirky, clever discussion of grand strategy in the civil war.......2007-02-19

McMurry's title is ironic -- there was no Fourth Battle of Winchester. He begins the book with a "what-if" counterfactual story of the Confederates decisively winning the 1864 battle of Cedar Creek, which would therefore have been known as the Fourth Battle of Winchester for the town through which the retreating Yankees would have fled. McMurry goes on to describe a series of plausible Confederate victories in the Virginia theater following this one, resulting in more glory for Robert E Lee, more defeats for the Army of the Potomac, yet... despite all of this: the inevitable defeat of the Confederacy.

This is all a clever way of arguing that the Western (Trans-Appalachian) theater of the Civil War was the decisive Union victory, and that defeat here inevitably sealed the Confederate's fate. Regardless of the Virginia theater. McMurry is extreme about this argument, to the occassional point of ridiculous claims: "Gettysburg has had far greater impact on the tourist business of Adams County Pennsylvania than it ever had on the military outcome of the Civil War." But no matter -- these are somewhat tongue and cheek statements made for effect.

In fact McMurry's chatty, quirky tone and sense of humor aid considerably in making his argument sympathetic. The book is a short essay, and the author jumps nimbly from topic to topic on why the Confederacy really lost the war through battles like Fort Donelson, Shiloh, and Vicksburg. The book is a unique and thought-provoking addition to the literature on Civil War grand strategy

Quick read.......2006-05-06

Perhaps nothing more to add to the first two reviewers (with whom I agree with) other than to state that this book allows one to consider the importance of the West to the Confederates' cause. While I believe the first three chapters are nothing more than entertaining, at best, the last chapters are more worthwhile to a student of the Civil War. I found myself agreeing with some of McMurry's thesis while arguing with others. But as the author states, what better way to stir the discussion about how and why the Confederacy lost the war. If you are considering buying this book I would encourage it, for it caused me to delve in further into the subject, yes, by buying other books referenced.

Convincingly Argued.......2005-09-01

In this relatively short book, beginning with a counter-factual, the author argues that it is impossible to understand the Civil War without studying the western campaigns. Kentucky's neutrality gave the Confederacy time to prepare its defenses in the west, and hopefully to woo the vital state with its easily defensible northern border to its side. Instead, the bishop General Polk violated its neutrality, forcing it to the Union side. The Mississippi, Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers gave the Union navy and army clear paths deep into the Confederacy, making most of the important state of Tennessee untenable. Although Robert E. Lee is frequently criticized for lacking a good overall vision of the war, McMurry argues that his actions were best for the Confederacy, that only by great success in Virginia could the losses in the west be negated and Southern independence won.

Fun to read.......2002-05-20

This is a book on Civil War grand strategy during the last year of the war. It assumes the reader is familiar with the campaigns and battles mentioned, and so is not for a Civil War novice. The book begins with a counterfactual depiction of Early's raid, and the resulting consequences. It then segues to the author's previously published arguments that the West was the decisive theatre, and that Grant should have stayed there or at least put Thomas in command. ... The book then concludes with a short defense of Lee's grand strategic thinking. I found the book so interesting, readable, and short, that I finished it in one four hour sitting. At times the arguments seemed a little overwrought, and I'm sure those who feel the East was the decisive theatre will have their counter arguments, but none of this prevented my enjoying the book.
