Book Description

This beautiful photographic collection of urban train station design covers a 100-year period from roughly 1850 to 1950. Striking original photographs chronicle 40 large passenger station buildings still in existence in cities around the world. From the great terminals of London, across the world to Auckland, New Zealand; from Toronto's Union Station to the grand and crumbling Retiro Station in Buenos Aires—vastly different architectural forms are displayed and presented chronologically. One-third of the stations included are among the best America has to offer.

Still Standing: A Century of Urban Train Station Design outlines the history and development of large urban stations throughout the Western world. The basic physical forms and their evolution are reviewed in the context of the rapid growth of train travel. Christopher Brown discusses the arrival and impact of Beaux-Arts architecture in the 1890s and its profound effect on the American terminal. The end of the so-called golden era of passenger rail travel coincided with an architectural move away from the classicism of Beaux-Arts. New and different design forms appeared while passengers defected to other means of transportation.

These dazzling public structures have endured, but the photographs imply a disturbing question: How long will they survive?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise!.......2006-03-08

I was pleased to discover this book, and to find it was really more than just a group of train station photographs - as beautiful as they are. The writer/photographer simply yet eloquently shares his love of these structures - both in his writing and in the loving way the many station photographs are presented and framed. I purchase a lot of design and architecture books. It is not often this type of book delivers so much "heart". A very pleasant surprise!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing...........2006-03-06

The photos are few and mediocre and the printing is of low quality with poor color saturation and muddy details (perhaps because it is printed in China?). Even the limited details of the stations themselves (the only written information in the book) is lacking in depth. Save your money....

5 out of 5 stars Pictures worth a thousand words...........2005-11-19

It is very seldom one finds a book on a specialized subject such as striking photos of train station architecture that is executed with such passion and commitment. The preface gives a brilliant foundation to this study which, in lesser hands, could have easily become dry and academic. The photos are stunning and the placement of the camera always reveals the design or the detail that distills what the designer of the station intended. The layout is beautifully done with a keen eye for color and layout. I love this book, and it is high on my gift-giving list for Christmas.

    Book Description

Despite its being the basic vocabulary of decorative painting, strokework is still one of the hardest skills to master. This book assumes no prior knowledge of strokework on the part of the reader in order to ensure they learn good painting habits right from the start.

Inside, readers will find complete instructions for executing a fantastic range of brushstrokes, from the most basic to the more challenging, plus guidelines for designing and painting gorgeous strokework compositions and projects.

Detailed photos clarify how to build each individual stroke, from the proper loading of the brush, to placing the bristles on the surface, pressing down, turning or pivoting the brush, lifting up, and finishing off. All the conventional brushstrokes are covered, plus many that are unique and innovative.

Step-by-step demos illustrate how to put individual strokes together to form many different kinds of leaves and flowers such as poppies, roses, thistles, violets, daylilies, bluebells, rhododendrons, hydrangeas and more. The book concludes with easy-to-follow demos of scrollwork trim, glazing, and finishing techniques.

      4 out of 5 stars Provides a Good Start.......2003-01-27

Overall this book gives a good overview and lots of useful information. It could use some updating to accommodate for the current market.

The samples are helpful and can be modified to meet one's needs.

3 out of 5 stars Good basic stuff although a bit dated.......2002-12-06

Good overview of what you'll need to do to get started but short on details and the computer-related stuff is outdated in 2002. Legal advice is good and sample form letters are useful.

5 out of 5 stars Get launched into profitable photography.......2002-11-15

For the photographer who wants to find a way to market his or her photography, this great little book will save a tremendous amount of time and energy that one might spend in trying to figure out how to get started. This is not a book that tells you specific companies to go to in order to sell your work, for that you'll need to obtain photography marketing catalogs. Fortunately this book supplies you with names of some of those resources so you can begin your search for clients.

"Photo Submission" guides you in many important legal aspects of starting your business, things I either wouldn't have thought of, or that I might have learned through trial and error. For example, you learn how to obtain releases from people who serve as subjects in photos, and what to look for in a contract with a client. The author includes how to submit photos in various forms, including loose photos, bound, and on CD, plus gives suggestions for artistic, appealing presentation of these portfolios. There are also important guidelines on how to charge a fair price for your work. One of the most helpful parts of this book is that it is full of templates of letters, contracts, and other forms that you can copy.

You may have more questions to ask after going through this book, and you'll have to do your own research on finding clients, but this book has the potential to build your knowledge of legalities as well as a sense of confidence and professionalism.

      2 out of 5 stars Lacks Details.......2002-03-27

The subjects covered were helpful, but lacking in detail for one who is looking for expert guidance. I look for an author to get right to the point and explain things as an expert insider would guide the protege'. The author doesn't go much deeper than explaining the obvious, like advising the reader to find out if buyers prefer to review portfolois on CD's, prints, or transparencies. Many points the author makes raise questions rather than providing answers.

5 out of 5 stars This review comes from Library Journal.......1998-05-22

This fairly comprehensive book covers basically everything one needs to know about marketing one's photographs. The first half of the book features useful sections on storage of one's work, setting up a business plan, communicating with clients, promotion, copyright, and many other critically important considerations in establishing a successful commercial enterprise. The remainder of the book deals with photo submission, including developing and presenting a portfolio, selling work, and understanding the numerous markets for photography. A substantial part of commercial photography has to do with managing and presenting one's collections of photographs to potential clients, and this book succeeds admirably in advising on both counts. The book also includes sample business forms. Written in a clear, straightforward manner, this work will be welcomed by both advanced amateur and professional photographers. Highly recommended for all libraries, especially those supporting photography and business collections.Raymond Bial, Parkland Coll. Lib., Champaign, Ill.

From the author of There's No Such Thing as a Perfect Wedding, 235 more true tales-humorous, disastrous and outrageous-from the engagement through the honeymoon. Based on 15 years of collecting these stories, Bigger has added Advice Not Found in Wedding Guides. Although done with a sense of humor and anecdotes to back it up, this is actually very good advice (such as: "Outlaw the bachelor party"-it can ruin your wedding, possibly even your marriage).

5 out of 5 stars An excellent 'crime-noir' story that grabs the reader........1998-03-15

The story of four street-wise, hard-nosed career criminals who, while planning and executing an intricate heist, have to contend with a serial killer. Written with an in depth knowledge of the street and of the characters on both sides of the law, and with a gritty urban voice that makes the book both a pleasure to read and hard to put down. The author's previous (and only other) book, 'Ringolevio' was either an astounding history of New York in the 50s and of the Haight Asbury area in the 60s, or one of the most imaginative creations in modern American literature. Emmett Grogan is known as one of the founders of the 'Diggers', a legendary San Francisco community group who started free food giveaways and free concerts in Golden Gate Park. Grogan died of a heroin overdose on a New York subway train in 1977, and was mentioned in the liner notes of Bob Dylan's 1978 album, 'Street Legal'.

Robert McGuire is a con artist with a unique twist; he only plies his art against drug dealers. This is his way of assisting President Bush with his war on drugs. Robert has been working his art for ten years, has amassed one hundred million dollars of ill-gotten gains, and has befriended one of the country's chief mafia bosses in New York. During his last score, Robert meets a young lady, Tina, falls in love and still works his wares on Billy, his newest mark. The trials that he must undergo in order to close the deal include setting the mark up, discovering his girlfriend has been kidnapped, turning to his associate in New York, multiple murders, and of course leaving the country. All of this must happen within a matter of days following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to explain the "why".......2007-10-08

Satan has a great way of making bad things look fun! This is what I'm always telling our children. This book does a great job in explaining the history of Halloween. Sure getting dressed up and getting candy seems harmless, but is it really??? Does God really want us living in a way that celebrates fear, death and horror when He himself does not give us a spirit of fear? I'm not saying all costumes and all people dress up in scary ways, but the main focus of Halloween is death and hauntings, etc. Reading this book is a wonderful way for the family to come together and understand the history of this day and not in a holier than thou way! I'm really sorry others feel that way, but we have to remember that doing what is right isn't always the popular thing to do.

                          5 out of 5 stars cute book!.......2007-01-09

We don't celebrate Halloween, but I find it really hard for my 5 and 7yr old to understand. We know lots of christians that do celebrate it, which can make our decision ever harder. It is hard for them to always be "missing out"! This book helped them to understand how Halloween began. It was very educational for me! We want to teach all things to the Glory of God and as a mom I fall short in so many ways. I am glad to find a book that helps them to understand why we choose to different and that it isn't something they are "MISSING" out on!

1 out of 5 stars Corruption of a Former Holy Day.......2006-10-29

Halloween is here, and as always there seems to be something for everyone. Youngsters get candy, adults get beer and folks of all ages give expression to their alter egos by means of outrageous costumes.

Of course, not everyone will be having fun.

Church leaders annually assert that dark "satanic" themes infect all Halloween revelry. Accompanying this hysteria is the dreaded fear of child abduction and ritual sacrifice. Fortunately for children, most of this fear is grounded in pure urban legend fantasy.

Unfortunately, for the rest of us, the fear does its work whether based in fact or not. That's why it has become standard practice for folks to X-ray Halloween booty on the off chance that some heartless child-hating psychopath has inserted a razor blade into an apple. Rarely is anything found.

Then there are the terrifying stories of candy laced with poison or illegal drugs. And there is some basis for these stories. But in nearly every instance in which poison or illegal drugs have been found in or on Halloween candy, a family member of the child was involved.

The traditional costuming of children also comes under attack. After all, witches, ghouls and vampires are one more satanic connection. Some believe that if we allow children to dress up like these creatures, we put them in touch with dangerous evil forces.

There are many ways folks deal with all this fear. Some communities simply offer alternative events -- Trunk or Treat and Fall Festivals, and so on. Others wage war on Halloween by trying to do away with it altogether.

One of the more ironic responses to the horror of Halloween is something we might call "Holy Terror." Many churches host events known as "hell houses" or "judgment houses" or "tribulation walks." These staged presentations depict a violent and gruesome end of the world. The content varies from church to church, but a common theme seems to be horror, pain and suffering for anyone who does not accept Jesus as his or her loving Savior.

I guess holy terror is less destructive than the regular kind.

The real loss here is what Halloween used to mean. Christian leaders from another time invented a way to instill hope in the lives of people who had lost loved ones or who were facing death. By using ancient pagan celebrations of the harvest, church leaders sought to drain death of its fearsome hold on us.

In the Christianized version of the autumn event, believers are reminded that all the faithful saints who have died and gone before have marked a path for us to follow. We remember these heroes on Nov. 1, All Hallows Day -- hallow meaning, in this case, "holy ones." The eve of this special day of remembering came to be known as "all hallows eve." Over time it was corrupted to become what it is now -- Halloween.

Sadly, with the corruption of this former holy day, it now accomplishes the opposite of its original purpose. Instead of giving comfort and confidence in the face of death, it now heightens our fear of death and shakes our confidence in our ability to live meaningful lives.

But that's what happens when the things of faith become co-opted by the marketplace. Whether Scripture or liturgical tradition, cut off from the life blood of worship, vital elements of faith become fertile ground for exploitation and misrepresentation.

Which reminds me, as soon as Halloween is over, it will be time to get ready for Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Truly life changing and perfect for all children.......2004-11-01

This book has totally transformed my family's thoughts about Halloween. I alway's knew it was not a good thing for us to do, but this book tells truly why it isn't. I am a Christian and teach my children to revere the Lord our God. The bible clearly states that we are not to worship any graven images and to have no other gods other than the true living God in Heaven. Whether it be nature, or some other image, these pagans were not worshipping the true God. I can not teach my children to love and respect and follow God 364 day a year and then say it is OK for just this one day. Sin is sin no matter how you package it. No that I know the truth about this evil holiday, I will refrain from taking part in it at all. Now, if others want to partake in it that is between them and God. I can only set an example for others to follow. It is also a good indicator of a truly good Christian book to see how many non-Christians are bashing it. Check out the review for Purpose Driven Life.

5 out of 5 stars May God bless Linda Winwood for writing this book!!!.......2004-11-01

Every year as Halloween approaches, I pull this book out and read it to my children. Anyone who says this book is shameful ought to be ashamed themselves. This book offers the truth regarding the history of Halloween. Everything about Halloween is rooted in evil- the costumes, the words, "trick or treat", even the jack-o-lantern. As a Christian, I am trying to raise children who love and revere the Lord; children who please Him. They cannot please Him doing things that have their roots in evil. To all the critics of this book, I say, it doesn't matter to me whether the Celts worshipped the devil himself or nature. God said, "Have no other Gods except me." He said we are not to make graven images or bow to worship anything or anyone, but Him. So if someone worships nature, they're still an idol worshipper! And as far as the notion that this book promotes separation and bigotry- I say, that's ridiculous!!! My family is planning to embrace our neighbors who do celebrate Halloween by handing out candy with a message- the message that Jesus is Lord...the way, the truth and the life and no one can get to the Father except through Him. We don't see ourselves as better than anyone; or as perfect...only as forgiven, and it is our desire that all experience the love, forgiveness and peace that can only come through a relationship with Jesus Christ. We are thankful that Linda Winwood did the research, had the courage and took the time to help us, CHRISTIANS, walk in greater obedience to our Savior. If you're not a Christian; if it's not your desire to please God in all of your ways... then simply don't buy the book!!!

                          Book Description

                          J. Franklin Dyer’s journal offers a rare perspective on three years of the Civil War as seen through the eyes of a surgeon at the front. The journal, taken from letters written to his wife, Maria, describes in lengthy and colorful detail the daily life of a doctor who began as a regimental surgeon in the Nineteenth Massachusetts Volunteers and was promoted to acting medical director of the Second Corps, Army of the Potomac.

This firsthand account traces Dyer’s attempts to manage his Gloucester household even as the Second Corps fought on the Peninsula, at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and from the Wilderness to Petersburg. Over time his letters to his wife become fraught with the tension of a man losing his early martial ardor as he witnesses the ghastly procession of suffering and death.

Both a talented surgeon and a careful administrator, Dyer nevertheless declined opportunities to work at hospitals in the rear in order to stay near his old regiment and the fighting. He confronted the aftermath of battle—thousands of wounded and dying men—with a small staff and simple instruments. He and his fellow surgeons saved lives as best they could—often at the cost of amputated limbs—then dropped to the ground from exhaustion and slept in blood-drenched uniforms until the cries of the wounded woke them and induced them back to work. Dyer also provides a glimpse of the most devastating opponent the armies faced: disease. He and his medical colleagues fought cholera, typhus, dysentery, measles, and, despite official denials in Washington , a scurvy outbreak that weakened Federal units during the Peninsula campaign.

A great read for anyone interested in the innerworkings of the Army of the Potomac. Dyer served closely with Gens. Hancock, Gibbon, Hooker, and Howard, giving pesonal insight to these men. He also goes into the lives to the fighing soldier in great detail. Being a top-notch surgeon, the men are always on the forefront of his mind. Dyer works tirelessly for the care and well being of the men. He is especially interested in making sure the men get vegetables, as Dyer is recognized as the first to realize that scurvy is a major problem in the Army. Perfect for anyone interested in how the medical corp oppereated from battlefield care, to the ambulence corp, to division hospitals up to to the large hospitals of the north. Tactfully edited by Chesson.

                            Book Description

On a somber night in July, 1863, Dr. Myron Robinson has slowly come to realize that the great assault on Fort Wagner will soon take place. As he watches the troops around their campfires eyeing the imposing fort looming in the distance, his thoughts drift back to other battles, other make-shift hospitals, and other friends lost during the last two years of war. As an army surgeon with the Connecticut Sixth Volunteers, Robinson has cut, sewn, bandaged and buried the victims of countless engagements. And, as he watches the soldiers steel their nerves for the upcoming assault, he knows there will be many more to come before the bloodshed ends.

Until now, the army surgeon's story of the Civil War has gone largely unheard. But his story, and the stories of the brave men he cared for, are tales that should be heard. Hear those tales now in Dr. Stewart J. Petrie's debut novel, "Letters and Journal of a Civil War Surgeon."

In March 1864, C. Marion Dodson left his comfortable home on MarylandÂ's Eastern Shore to join the U.S. Navy as a pharmacist. Barely weeks after joining a Union fleet on blockade in the Gulf of Mexico, another ship in the squadron raised the “Yellow Flag” , the signal that the dreaded yellow fever had stricken its crew. They desperately needed medical help, his captain told Dodson. Someone had to go aboard and wager his life against the deadly unknown.
Encounters with a comely Rebel “belle” in New Orleans and the explosive pursuit of the formidable C.S.S. William H. Webb make this lively and informative diary a memorable voyage for all readers of Civil War literature.

                                            Book Description

Since the 1950s, the federal government has relied on the peer review system for funding academic science. Peer review, however, is under attack for being a biased system that helps rich research universities get richer. As a remedy for these biases, university presidents and members of Congress have turned to the earmarking of science projects and facilities in the federal budget. Funding Science in America explores both the pros and the cons of the academic earmarking issue and explains why this issue has caused a rift within the nation's science community.
