Modern Architecture: A Critical History (World of Art)
ASIN: 0262561492 |
Book Description
Kenneth Frampton's long-awaited follow-up to his classic A Critical History of Modern Architecture is certain to influence any future debate on the evolution of modern architecture.
Studies in Tectonic Culture is nothing less than a rethinking of the entire modern architectural tradition. The notion of tectonics as employed by Frampton -- the focus on architecture as a constructional craft -- constitutes a direct challenge to current mainstream thinking on the artistic limits of postmodernism, and suggests a convincing alternative. Indeed, Frampton argues, modern architecture is invariably as much about structure and construction as it is about space and abstract form.
Composed of ten essays and an epilogue that trace the history of contemporary form as an evolving poetic of structure and construction, the book's analytical framework rests on Frampton's close readings of key French and German, and English sources from the eighteenth century to the present. He clarifies the various turns that structural engineering and tectonic imagination have taken in the work of such architects as Perret, Wright, Kahn, Scarpa, and Mies, and shows how both constructional form and material character were integral to an evolving architectural expression of their work. Frampton also demonstrates that the way in which these elements are articulated from one work to the next provides a basis upon which to evaluate the works as a whole. This is especially evident in his consideration of the work of Perret, Mies, and Kahn and the continuities in their thought and attitudes that linked them to the past.
Frampton considers the conscious cultivation of the tectonic tradition in architecture as an essential element in the future development of architectural form, casting a critical new light on the entire issue of modernity and on the place of much work that has passed as "avant-garde."
Studies in Tectonic Culture is a copublication of the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies and The MIT Press.
Customer Reviews:
work and think.......2005-10-03
It might be arguable whether Kenneth Frampton is an excellent architectural theorist, but he is definitely one of the most critical analysists and knowlegeable historians.
Frampton, in this book, opens a new window for us to look at and to think about architecture. He first defined the term 'tectonics' culture with the theory of Semper. Then he critically analyses the tectonic quality of some of the modernist masters' buildings (Mies, Kahn, Wright, Utzon etc).
People might argue that studies architecture only by their tectonic quality reveals only partially of the architect's intent and this is why I think Frampton misunderstood Mies' intent. However, one could not disagree with Frampton's critical architectural analytical skill.
One of the biggest problems of contemporary architecture theorists is lacking of professional knowledges and architectural analytical skills. This makes architecture theory as an over generalized conceptual debate. As a result, it ultimately delineates the 'professionalism' of architect: one either work or think. 'Studies in Tectonic culture' built a new bridge to save our professionalism from 'no-brainers'.
Read the Tectonics in Architecture.......2003-09-23
I have read this book in 1996, and found it very useful for any architect who wants to further his knowledge of modern architecture. The insights of Mr. Frampton with his deep and wide knowledge of architecture makes this book a must have for any architect. It is a different point of view in the theory of architecture than the normal story telling book of Architectural history.
A must buy!.......2003-07-29
The book contains black and white high resolution photos and architectural drawings. Frampton's text is well written, to the point, and downright interesting. A must buy for any serious architect!

Book Description
Sumi-e is the classic painting style of Japan, and its graceful simplicity is admired around the world. A natural follow-up to the best-selling The Sumi-e Book, The Sumi-e Dream Book demonstrates how to take the classic brushstrokes of sumi-e to a new level of painting, where creativity is inspired by deeply felt memories and spiritual expression. First, sumi-e artist Yolanda Mayhall provides a brief history and explains the philosophy behind this classic Japanese painting style. She highlights its many masters, one of them her ancient mentor the master brush painter, woodblock, and dream journey artist Hokosai. Next, she reviews the classic materials and the basic brushstrokes of sumi-e known as the Four Gentlemen: Bamboo, Wild Orchid, Chrysanthemum, and Plum Branch, along with their variations. Finally, Mayhall puts it all together to demonstrate the sumi-e art of dream journey painting. Readers will learn a variety of creative and exciting techniques for using color to add a delightful dimension to the sumi-e image as well as discover exciting techniques for visually capturing important life memories and spiritual reflections in a painting.

The Semi-e Dream book.......2007-05-12
Its ok but I thought it was going to be more step by step and its not. Good book thow.
A Bit Shallow.......2006-11-11
Very nice pictures and some good description on Sumi-e dreamjourney painting. However, as an artist looking for more detailed explanations on techniques, I was quite disappointed. If I was just interested in general ideas on this type of painting the book would be great, but as an artist I was disappointed in the way the material was presented. For example, loading the brush was glossed over.
Good paintings, but not sumi-e.......2005-01-19
This book might be interesting as some artistic approach to make paintings. the paintings are not bad. But they are not sumi-e. They are rather aquarelle, that mimics eastern paintings.
IMHO the key thing, that makes Yolanda paintings look different is her technique of brushstokes, which are very typical to the western aquarelle school. The original sumi-e brushstrokes are based on brushstokes of chinese (well, and japanese as well) calligraphy, and this is one of the characteristics that variate paintings of differnt masters.
Still, the book text is a good transcription of sumi-e/brush painting concept. Just for the painting examples I'd suggest to look at the works of the "original" artists.
A real "dream" for those interested in Sumi-e Painting.......2004-04-09
Being an afficionado of Chinese Brush painting, I was intrigued when I first saw this book. I'm not easily impressed by art books, and I've reviewed hundreds over the years, but this is one of those books that actually surprised me. It really is a dream for artists intersted in the brush painting of China and Japan. Here's why...
Mayhall's style is both beautiful and spontaneous, and the imagery in this book is breathtaking. What is really refreshing about this book, however, is that it isn't just another *how to* brush technique book. While she does go into great detail on history, materials, technique, and subject matter, the artist puts you into the mindset of a Sumi-e artist. Rather than simply show her readers "how" to paint, Mayhall encourages them to begin their own journey into Sumi-e "dream" painting, and equips them with the knowledge necessary to find their own artistic voice. She states, "it is not only the subject that gives life to art, it is the spirit that is within the artist's genius." Well said!
Material covered in this text includes:
* Chapter 1 - A Brief History of Sumi-e
* Chapter 2 - Studying the Dream Journey Painters of China and Japan
* Chapter 3 - Starting on Your Own Dream Journey (tools, brush strokes)
* Chapter 4 - Practicing the Four Gentlemen (bamboo, wild orchid, chrysanthemum, plum branch)
* Chapter 5 - Beginning the Creative Process (incorporating the four gentlemen)
* Chapter 6 - Learning Advanced Brush Strokes for Birds & Flowers (Yo birds, iris, hummingbirds & its flowers)
* Chapter 7 - Internalizing the Three Essential Elements of Sumi-e (creativity, composition, color)
* Chapter 8 - Planning the Journey (sketching, structure, Exploring new techniques, beginning your dream journey)
* Chapter 9 - Dreaming (more ideas & demonstrations)
* Chapter 10 - Enhancing Your Dream Paintings (calligraphy)
If you're interested in the brush painting style of China and Japan, or would like to incorporate these techniques into your watercolor and/or ink painting, I recommend this book along with "Chinese Painting Techniques for Exquisite Watercolors" by Lian Quan Zhen... two excellent books to inspire you and bring your own artistic dreams to life.
Friend and admirer.......2003-07-17
As a long time friend and collector of Yolanda's beautiful paintings, I was overjoyed to see her latest book. I have found it to be not only well organized and illustrated but written in a style that is easily understood and followed. The inclusion of historical and contemporary works accompanied by poetic translations elevates the instructional format to a book to be cherished for its contribution to understanding the mysterious and ancient culture of Japan.

Book Description
West from the Columbia is an essay in photographs about the meeting of a great river and the sea. The book is at once a celebration of beauty at the ocean's edge and a meditation on our relationship with it.
In the pictures the sea mirrors every condition through which our lives pass- fresh mornings, calm days, fogs, storms, and night-- and as in life, little is explained. Driftwood next to our feet is as mysterious as is the ship on the horizon.
Lewis and Clark arrived here, the farthest point in their exploration, in 1805. Report of their journey was instrumental in opening the American West for development. Since then we have destroyed large and diverse forests that once stood along the Columbia, and polluted the river with waste from cities, paper mills, and the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.
Though we now know that even the sea itself is finite-- nothing can be hidden-- we continue to look for hope at the ocean's shore. Might we be embraced, like the river, by so perfect a light?
Robert Adams is fond of an entry in one of Theodore Roethke's journals-- "I see what I believe."

Book Description
"Where there is stress, humor is not far behind," holds Close to Home creator John McPherson. And thanks to his stressed-out cast of characters, readers everywhere find something laughable, hilarious, and oftentimes downright knee-slapping in McPherson's single-panel snapshots of a loony world. Take the soberness of a former circus performer's funeral, the idea that a health club would have an Offensive Odor Alarm, or absurd hospital insurance policies. McPherson has the eye-and the twisted mind-to capture such scenes in ways that both shock and amuse his readers. What else could account for his wildly successful Close to Home collections and greeting cards' Outrageous humor that is outrageously absurd!
Now McPherson does it again with The Close to Home Survival Guide, an all-new aggregation of his lumpy figures, with their long faces, protruding noses, and bulging eyeballs, parading down that fine line between grotesque and certifiably goofy. Everything from family life and dating to car repair and medical emergencies provide fodder for the wackiness in this latest essential collection and guide.

Humor, Good medicine for the soul........2002-07-09
They say that humor is good medicine for the soul, If that is true then this is a prescription for life. However, if you take it too seriously, you may just die laughing. Yep folks, when it comes to the demented side of humor, MCPHERSON has the cure for your sick minds.
From the way the characters are developed to the background illustrations, all the way to the use of numbers, these jokes are hilarious and hit so close to home its scary. How scary? Youll want to give all own to charity and move to Austriala!
Good heavens this stuff so funny that if you take a heavy dose of this it could cure all you ills, or at least whats ailing you.
The Usual Funny McPherson..........2000-05-07
Great Laughs, as usual! McPherson fans and followers will LOVE this one! Before all else, McPherson first! Enjoy!

Product Description
Summers takes a unique, and, to some, controversial, approach to teaching and parenting her daughter with autism by applying Chaos Theory in combination with more traditional behavior management strategies. The results have been extraordinary. Jessica, initially pronounced as limited to a self-contained classroom wearing a helmet to prevent self-abusive behaviors, is now an accomplished student in high school, composing music, writing stories, and speaking at conferences about life with autism.
Customer Reviews:
Out of Order Comes Chaos.......2007-10-08
This is one of the most beautiful and uplifting books I have ever read. Lynley Summers is a genius. It's as simple as that.
Ms. Summers' daughter, Jessica "Jazz," displayed severely autistic behaviors as an infant and toddler. Refusing to give in to the misguided so-called "experts" who held out minimal hope for Jazz, Summers worked diligently with her child. Instead of institutionalizing her (this was in the early 1990s, not the Dark Ages of the pre-1980s) or relegating her to special classes where she would have to wear protective headgear, Summers implemented some very clever and creative programs for Jazz.
She took each behavior as an individual area to challenge. Just as many with autism process and follow information when it is presented in manageable amounts, Summers used this same approach with Jazz. Since her child adhered to routine, she decided to introduce chaos. In lay terms, she explains the chaos theory (and did such a good job that it piqued my interest and I started learning more about it) and how it could be applied to Jazz. She threw the girl's schedule into total chaos; every night dinner was served at a different time; Jazz did not know if she was taking her bath before or after dinner. The same approach was used throughout their day. Some afternoons they might take a walk; others they might read inside. Over time, this "chaotic method" paid dividends and was applied throughout various aspects of their lives.
I like the way Summers was honest with Jazz; I love the fair approach she took when administering discipline. If Jazz broke any rules, she could count on some repercussions. Similarly, if Summers broke an agreement she had made with her daughter, then she, too had to do without something she especially enjoyed.
Their horizons expanded; Summers graduated from college and moved out of state with Jazz. Jazz even spent her 4th and 5th grade years in Japan because of Summers' job transfer. Her performance exceeded any the so-called experts had predicted for her. Instead of special classes, she had occupational and speech therapy at home. Each activity outside of school was therapeutic. Jazz discovered that she had high reasoning skills; became conversant and literate in Japanese and, by 2002 became a loving sister to two step-brothers who all complemented one another well.
Averie, the younger brother was also on the autistic spectrum. The chaos method worked with him as well. He and Jazz have demonstrated extraordinary musical prowess and both have impressive academic track records.
I love this book; I especially love Jazz' insights about her nonverbal days which she called The Void. A gifted writer, she is at the time of this review working on her own book. I am looking forward to reading it. The trust in God both mother and daughter have beautifully underscores the triumphs they have enjoyed. Their faith stands out like a shining beacon throughout this stellar book.
This highly inspirational book makes me think of the 1962 song Elvis sang, "Follow That Dream" because Lynley, Jazz, Steve and the boys followed their dreams wherever their dreams led them. I love this book!
Inspiring Story.......2006-02-16
Initially upon reading the cover and starting the book I thought this was an "I know how to cure autism" book. As the mother of three children with autism spectrum disorder/Asperger Syndrome, I am hypersensitive and probably overreactionary when I perceive that message. But I was wrong, this isn't that kind of book at all! This is an inspirational story of a mother and daughter as they face the daily challenges of living and loving through autism. Indeed, necessity is the mother of invention, and Lynley took it upon herself to invent some very creative ideas for helping her daughter, Jazz. I enjoyed her thoughts on chaos theory and how she implemented it as a tool for helping her daughter be able to adapt more readily to a changing schedule. Plus, I could so strongly identify with the emotions she expressed as a mother and this greatly endeared this book to me. There were moments that touched my heart so deeply, particularly the story of her daughter having a major meltdown at the grocery store because it is a common experience for so many parents, including myself. A public humiliation. And yet, Lynley held her head high, continuing to put items in her grocery cart and checking out despite being an absolute mess. As a mother Lynley embodies the, I'm down but I'm not out, and I'm fighting back spirit. She's not fighting against autism, she is fighting FOR her daughter. And with her dedication and the grace of God, she has helped Jazz grow into quite a charming and successful young woman. This book will inspire many to follow their hearts and not give up even when things seem hopeless.
Absolutely FABULOUS!.......2006-02-02
This is an incredible book for which I HIGHLY recommend to ANYONE! This book is applicable to anyone and should not be limited to Autism alone.
Great Story.......2006-02-01
This book tells the story of a family that has autistic children. Artistically written, Dr. Summers shows that autism is not necessarily a bad thing; it's not a disease; and that people overcome it.
I would have liked to been able to read a few more "Jessica Speaks" and maybe have added an "Alex Speaks" to tell how he feels about his autistic siblings.
All in all, this is an amazing book that everyone should read.
Dr. Summers has done a great job.
Easy Read - proven methods.......2006-01-25
Lynley's daughter was a beautiful infant that laughed walked sang and danced. She talked and played and then disappeared. Her mother refused to give up and and worked with her. Her methods are proven. Jazz is now 16 years old and is a 4th generation National Honor Society Student. Highly recommended for parents and caregivers of Autistic Children.

Ground-breaking scholarship and a good story.......2004-02-18
In a fine piece of scholarship, Thomas Conlan has written a book about samurai warfare that instantly cuts through the hoary myths that have skewed so many Japanese histories written in English. Here are the real samurai -- professional soldiers and policemen whose loyalty could be purchased or won with promise, flesh-and-blood men just as afraid of dying as anyone else, and just as ambitious and covetous. With a clear eye and an agile pen, Conlan -- one of the "new" practitioners of Japanese history to emerge in the last decade -- culls primary sources and proves that the samurai did not rush to their work, but rather preferred to fight from afar. This is an important history -- clearly written and beautifully illustrated -- important not only to the historiography of the era, but to the scholarship of WWII as well. It is easy to see now how the Imperial Japanese Army piped the perverted the "traditions" it used to send so many men to their deaths.
