I thought the book itself was really interesting although a little confusing. Especially when I actually had to use it for class assignments!

Integrated Review of Two Top Books That Mesh Well.......2007-07-11

Although I normally read books in twos and threes on the same topic to gain varied perspectives, this is the first time I am writing a single review encompassing two books. They mesh together so well that I cannot imagine studying this subject without having BOTH in hand.

The two books are Sun, Wind & Light: Architectural Design Strategies, 2nd Edition and The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design.

Start with the introduction in the Guidebook, which is blessed with a Foreword from Paul Hawken and see especially page 13 where the cost benefits are shown, with 48% energy savings for Gold, 30% for Silver, and 28% for Certified. See also the illustration on page 15 that I have reproduced in the image I am loading for both books: the old decision model was Cost at the top, with Schedule and Quality anchoring the triangle. the new decision model still has cost at the top, but Schedule and Human Health, Safety, & Comfort are on corners of this new pentagon, and the bottom is achored by Quality and Ecology, or what Paul Hawken would call in his books, "true cost" to the Earth and Humanitas.

NOW shift to the Contents and the Detailed Contents of Sun, Wind, & Light. As one reviewer notes, this is a course book. I did not recognize it as such, I saw it as one of the most gifted complete collection of factors to learn and apply that I have ever seen for ANY topic of study. The content and organization of this book is nothing short of Nobel-level "wow." Finish going through this book.

NOW go back to the first 218 pages of the Handbook, and study the checklists and varied helpful boxes and explanations. The rest of the book (217-459) is case studies of specific buildings, each a few pages, that can be left for last.

At this point, I went into the Glossaries and Bibliographies of both books. Each is distinct, neither supplants the other. They must be taken together. I read Glossaries, and Indices, as content, and use them as a form of "second look" (in extremely complex books, this is actually where I start).

NOW go back to the Case Studies in the Handbook, and read each from the point of view of what "take away" lessons are there for your own building.

Reading these two books was a real treat. Outside my office kitchen is a deck with an 11 point system for attracting birds from bluebirds and bluejays to cardinals, gold finches, two kinds of woodpecker, and a flicker as well as the more common birds. I believe in diversity, and I believe that if we don't get our act together and start living up to the ideals of Natural Capitalism (see other recommended books below), our world will go sterile and dark before out great-grandchilden can share in the beauty of this planet. These two books are part of the solution, and I am in serious awe of those who made them available to all of us, and at reasonable prices to boot. Well done!!!

Not so useful.......2007-03-09

So instead of getting a manual on how to design a building to maximize sun, wind, and light, what I got was a lengthy math book on how to quantitatively analyze the sun, light and wind in existing conditions.... There are some nuggets of good info but I don't see myself getting very much out of the book in general.

These guys need a third author (or good editor) who knows how to present ideas clearly, directly and in an intuivive manner. This information is dense enough without unnecessarily dense language which makes the material more difficult to use.

Excellent book.......2007-03-29

This is the book I refer to most for how to actually handle paint. If you want to know about glazing, this is the book. The author goes into that in depth, discussing transparent versus opaque paint and the various mediums and providing examples with descriptions of what he did to achieve the effects. Very good overview of paints on the market, with discussion of the composition of the various brands, and of various mediums--includes alkyds and miscibles. Weak on the discussion of brushes--names the types, but does not go into the pros and cons of the bristle material--sable, mongoose, hog bristle, etc, and there is nothing about brands of brushes. Nothing to speak of about canvas panels, though there is discussion on wood and masonite panels. The author has a pleasant, direct writing style. Overall, this is a terrific book, I refer to it often.

Creevy's Oil Painting Book has Something for Everyone.......2007-03-17

Bill Creevy's The Oil Painting Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist is really rather good. Very unassuming but really informative, it is pretty encyclopedic, too. It gives an overview and historical synopsis of twenty-two oil paint manufacturers from all over the world that includes each company's mission regarding oil paint manufacturing and strengths. It continues with valuable information on the characteristics of mediums and solvents and trade-products. It then offers rather unpretentious examples of the many differing styles that one may use to paint with oil based paint. The product information is useful for the advanced painter, and the instructional information, meanwhile, is useful for the experimenting beginner without trying to be a "how to paint" book.

Good material explanation; techniques section could be better.......2007-03-11

The book starts with an extensive explanation about oil painting materials; very complete and understandable. I liked it a lot, but I'm sure that many painters don't have much interest in so much information and theory. The section that describes all the different brands of oil paints is too long and doesn't really add value
The explanation about the techniques is good, but the examples are not really helpful. Bill Creevy has a particular painting style that is not really useful to be used in examples.

_____I bought this book for my girlfriend, who is a huge fan of Jane Goodall. But I find myself picking it up and reading through it a lot. This book is an excellent read, for the casual animal lover as well as those with a deep interest in primatology.

_____The book covers much of Jane Goodall's life, including biographical info, historical research milestones, and even those special moments that make Goodall the concerned activist she is. It has well-written text and beautiful, high-quality photos. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Jane Goodall, especially those who do not know much about her and would like a starter reference book.

At 14, I admire and sulute Ms. Goodall! Her work and devotion to some the most fascinating of animals is absolutely stunning! I think that over her 40 wonderful at Gombe, she has developed a beautiful relationship with these animals, and you can definetely see and feel their love with this book! Everyone who has ever read her dazzling books or has any knowledge or admiration for Jane's hard and unmistakably hard work will enjoy this timeline of a stunning woman's life in Africa! Enjoy!

In 1964 Paul Krakowski, a journalism professor at Duquense University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was awarded a Fulbright lectureship at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand. He and his wife, Blair, a librarian, departed San Francisco in May of that year, and after stopovers in Hawaii, Tokyo, and Hong Kong, arrived in Bangkok on June 12.

Their lives immediately became extremely interesting, as learning the ways of the Thai people was a necessity for maintaining comfortable daily living. There were exotic fruits and vegetables in the market, bargaining with taxi drivers for fares and avoiding ice made with impure water. Snakes lurked in public places, mail took strange prolonged detours before arriving in Bangkok from the states, and several times their apartment was burglarized - once while they were sleeping.

But luckily the Krakowskis discovered that all of the elements of culture shock were not bad; some were quite fascinating. There was the feeding of the monks, the trays of beetles displayed at the Sunday market, the snake farm with the feeding and milking of cobras, Thai wedding customs, and the Thieves Market, where everything under the was displayed for sale - and most of it stolen from foreigners!

Paul and Blair spent two happy and exciting years in Thailand, and then it was time to go home. Their return took them to such places as Jerusalem, Cairo, Naples, Pompeii, Florence, Venice, Berlin, Amsterdam, and London.

The story of their travels, told via a collection of witty letters Blair sent to her parents during that time, is an informative journal of an era rife with the escalating conflict in nearby Vietnam, and a touching tribute to her beloved husband Paul.

Easy Reading and Pleasant True Story.......2004-09-14

I read "A Farang from Virginia" during my lunch hours over a period of two weeks. I was in high school during the period described in the book. Vietnam was just starting, and the Krakowski's were in Thailand on a Fulbright lectureship. This journal describes the times, and the place that is Bangkok - a place we have all heard of, but most of us will never visit. Ms. Krakowski's descriptions of the day to day dealings with being in a new country, and the royalty with whom they rubbed shoulders was informative, and entertaining. I will read it again.

Amazon.com has the price of the book wrong - it is only $9.00, and well worth it.

Great reference on the -104.......2004-06-19

This book is a great overview of the F-104s history. The author's work at Lockheed put him in a great position to locate several unusual photographs and drawings of the F-104s development. It also gave him access to many personnel at Lockheed who were involved in flight test and other design aspects, whose anecdotes spice up the book.

The descriptions of systems are on the short side, but well written and make it easy for the neophyte to understand how the systems work, yet have enough detail to satisfy most more advanced readers.
