How to make Clay Characters .......2007-07-14

How to make clay characters by Maureen Carlson is not available to buy in Australia. I had it on loan from my local library but only for limited periods and it was never long enough. I am happy to say that although it may have been printed initially a long time ago I am delighted to have obtained it as it has such excellent instructions and lots of handy hints for the polymer clay first timer onwards.To anyone reading this revue who wants another hobby to try (even in Australia) buy this book and you will be hooked.

The mere fact that it is still in print is a sign of how good it is for any age. Easy to follow and great fun all you need is polymer clay your imagination and this book.

I have four of Maureen Carlson's books. They are all fantastic.
This one is my favorite. Very clear instruction. Gets you started and wanting to sculpt all the time. I love it!

Indeed a marvellous book you should have as one of your clay-book collections. Maureen has good eyes and different angles when seeing new things, and new thoughts to convert them into brilliant figurines. I love her ideas of how making the snakes and the dragons, and her tricks to get new color mixtures are awesome.

I almost bought her books entirely, and have no regrets so far. Thanks to Amazon for superb service, even though I must bear waiting for a month and so for my orders.

My advice, you always can give your book collections to your kids when you no longer need them.

Wonderful book with all sorts of tips and techniques. Being a novice, I found so much that I will rely on over and over again. Well written, with many pictures as well that are just beautiful. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to get into doll making.

Intriguing and Stimulating.......2007-03-31

I'm new to polyclay, but I'm really excited at the possibilities that have crossed my mind as I read this book. It was all new to me and the techniques seem simple and clear enough that I can take off into another world of "folk" with all the ideas spilling out onto my notebook paper. Thanks to the author for well-written and illustrated pages, ideas, and inspiration. For the "advanced clay-er" this may be too simple, but being a crafter from other mediums, I often go back to the basics when I'm stumped for ideas for something new to try. If you don't find this book to your liking, please, donate it to your local public library. It's a fantastic find for beginners and young children who naturally create. My copy stays right here in my collection availale for my family to use to inspire them to try new things. Thanks again Maureen.

Helpful, yet very repetitive!.......2003-01-26

I must say I had higher expectations with this book. When I bought it I was -so to speak- going under the ups and downs of the first few weeks after being diagnosed with Type 2, and upon reading comments and reviews I decided this book could help me through some of it.Well, it did in a sense, but after the first few chapters, it becomes incredibly repetitive and, at times, even contradictory. The problem is that it's all made of essays, all of which are written by different people. This results in a true mix that more than once brings back concepts that already have been discussed, more precisely perhaps, the anger that a diabetic experiences and how to deal with it. By the fourth time I read about this, I was almost angry to find the topic discussed again! :) (not so much, but you get the point). Otherwise, it has some great advice. I would say it's best for someone who's on his or her first few days after diagnosis or someone who -regardless- continues to be on an emotional rollercoaster due to diabetes, or for parents of diabetic children. Not really the best resource for spouses of diabetics.

A gentle companion for individuals dealing with diabetes.......2002-05-05

People with diabetes so often have to read and absorb dense information about their condition. This book, though, does not make those kinds of intense demands on the reader. It consists of a series of brief articles dealing with ways to support yourself or your child through stresses associated with diabetes.

Chapters include topics such as surviving the preteens, beating stress and dealing with negative thoughts. Each chapter is written by a different author.

I see this as a book you can keep in the bathroom, by the bed or in the car. One day you might want to spend five minutes reading about how to develop an exercise program. Another time, you might read about dealing with perfectionistic tendencies. Read the chapters in any order as you need them.

This book takes you through all the emotions one deals with when faced with the diagnosis of Diabetes. It also gives good insight on how to tap into your own ways of dealing with Diabets on a daily basis. An excellent book!

With a "somewhat evolutionary approach," the in-depth, wide-ranging investigation looks to economic changes, environmental use, technological progress, and social structures as not only prompting war at different times, but also as bringing about changes in the ways wars were waged. The authors accept that the penchant for waging war is innate in human beings. This attribute was not engendered at some point in human evolution. The authors show that violence can be seen in archaeological findings of the earliest groups. The earliest violence was the use of techniques in hunting against other human beings. Human sacrifice, and possibly torture, can be seen in cave drawings. Even the development of agriculture and settled communities did not quell the penchant for violence, but in some ways carried it to the next level. The authors have no political or social agenda--they do not go into implications of their well-substantiated postulate that warfare is derived from inherent characteristics of human beings. Zammit is a doctor and paleopathologist whose knowledge of these fields brings a special insight into signs of violence on human remains and psychology and behavior which are the sources of war and go into war when it breaks out. Guilaine's fields are archeology and social science; which allow him to offer unfamiliar, yet plainly pertinent and unassailable disclosures about societies' penchants for war. With their different perspectives, the co-authors hone in on the core human characteristics accounting for the constancy of war in culture.

This book is the first detailed account of Britain's East of Suez decision, which was taken by the Harold Wilson Government in 1967-68. Contrary to received opinion, the author argues that the decision was not taken hastily as a result of the November 1967 devaluation. Nor is there any hard evidence to support the notion that there existed a "Pound-Defense" deal with the US. Despite Washington's pressure to maintain Britain's East of Suez role, the decision was taken by the Labor Government on the basis of a long-term effort to re-examine Britain's world role since 1959, and it marked the end of an era for postwar Britain.

The volume comprises a total of 23 scientific papers by close friends and colleagues, written specifically for this book. The papers are different in nature: some report on new research, others have the character of a survey, and again others are mainly expository.

Every contribution has been thoroughly refereed at least twice. In many cases the first round of referee reports led to significant revision of the original paper, which was again reviewed. The articles especially focus upon the lambda calculus, term rewriting and process algebra, the fields to which Jan Willem Klop has made fundamental contributions.
