Book Description

Whether you are experienced working with polymer clay or a novice, you'll love this new book from Dinko Tilov which takes you step by step through sculpting 10 all new projects, including a fairy tale cast of trolls, magicians, elves, knights, gnomes, wizards, a dragon and dragon baby, and a horse/giraffe, as well as fantasy holiday characters 'a glow in the dark skeleton, a Santa, an Easter bunny, and a silly guy holding a heart for Valentine's day.

Projects are designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced clayers. As skill level and artistic ability increase, clayers can turn to the bonus tips the author provides that encourage creativity outside the basic project, such as how to transform a basic humanlike character into a magician or wizard by adding appropriate features and accessories.

Well-known polymer clay artist Dinko Tilov walks readers through each step and provides instructions for creating his renowned "Dinko" critters with their silly, cartoonish faces.

5 out of 5 stars A Polymer Clay Fantasy Figure Book.......2007-03-09

A cute book for anyone who likes to dabble in the fantasy world of polyamer clay.

5 out of 5 stars Great step by step explanation.......2007-02-07

The characters in this book are somewhat goofy, however, the author provides excellent basics on armature building for creatures like horses and dragons. If you are looking for a lighter side to the fantasy world and would like to sculpt some fun creatures, this book is perfect. I think that kids will really love how achievable the sculptures in this book are for them.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best art/craft technique books ever.......2006-12-04

Superb from start to finish. If you have any interest in sculpting fantastic creatures in polymer clay this is the best place to start bar none-- and it will take you far. I've done most of the projects in the book and am now very comfortable creating my own critters from scratch. The photos are fantastic with just the right amount of detail (no shots taken from halfway across the room!), the text is very clear (and funny!), and the book is simply a lot of fun overall. Can't recommend it highly enough for anyone interested in the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome Book.......2006-05-10

I love this book it is step by step. I made the first smiling chicken and he looked just like the pictures. Super book.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, but fantasy means trolls here.......2005-08-31

This book is gorgeous, with unique, detailed projects and explicit step-by-step directions. Just be forewaarned that it interprets fantasy to mean troll-like, so even Santa and the Easter bunny are trolls. I am therefore returning my copy, and just wanted to warn you what to expect. But it is an absolutely gorgeous, well-done book, and most people will love it.

        Book Description

The greatest adventure epic since Beowulf continues in this perennial, full-color series. Hal Foster's Prince Valiant, with its thrilling continuities of a noble knight in the days of King Arthur, began in newspapers in 1937 and continues to this day. There had been continuity strips, and even strong elements of adventure, before Hal Foster started drawing comic strips, but approximately 35 years after the birth of the artform, it was Foster who introduced illustrative techniques—and the sensibilities and standards of such illustrative greats as Howard Pyle—to the comics page. Realistic depictions and sophisticated compositions had been curiously absent before him. He is still considered, twenty years after his death, to be comics' supreme classicist.

Fantagraphics' deluxe, full-color library-quality editions of Prince Valiant were initially intended to end with 2000's Vol. 40, the final volume in which Foster was the chief architect of the strip's visual look. Due to overwhelming public demand, however, we are continuing the series, reprinting strips written and roughed-out by Foster and finished by Foster's prodigious assistant, John Cullen Murphy. Murphy, who had been quietly assisting Foster for several years, actively took over the bulk of the drawing chores in 1971 and immediately developed a fan following himself (although, for the most part, your average newspaper reader couldn't discern a difference between Foster and Cullen Murphy's styles).

Each volume of Prince Valiant features close to a year's worth of full-page Sunday strips, in an oversized format showcasing the strip's spectacular artwork.

5 out of 5 stars A sweet, nostalgic view of childhood captured........1999-09-22

I am only sorry that I discovered Ms Ban Breathnach's Victorian works after they were out-of-print. As a mother of 2 little children, this would have been a wonderful keepsake. I did read the book which I borrowed from the library and was sad to give it up! I had grand plans of giving this to all new mothers, only to have my hopes dashed. This book is so sweet and captured my heart. I always thought of Victorian children as being appreciated only when seen and not heard. Alas, the 1890's were not that different from the 1990's we have much in common with our great-grandmothers...something we may not even have known. Published to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, ‘The D-Day Companion’ book brings together the perspectives and opinions of leading military historians from both sides of the Atlantic. Operation Overlord saw the Allied Generals Eisenhower and Montgomery pit their wits against Hitler in a bold bid to liberate continental Europe. Featuring a foreword by Major Richard Winters, real-life commander of Easy Company as featured in Stephen E Ambrose’s ‘Band of Brothers’, this is a unique and incisive examination of the momentous events that surrounded June 6, 1944. Each chapter of this new book focuses on a different aspect of the D-Day landings, from the build-up to the attack to the experiences of the troops on the ground.

Compiled and organized by Jane Penrose, The D-Day Companion: Leading Historians Explore History's Greatest Amphibious Assault is a seminal anthology of articulate essays and thoughtful insights drawn from a wide variety of military historians concerning the greatest European Theatre amphibious assault of World War II. Powerful black-and-white photographs wonderfully illustrate and enrich the text. Book Description

The beer of today--brewed from malted grain and hops, manufactured by large and often multinational corporations, frequently associated with young adults, sports, and drunkenness--is largely the result of scientific and industrial developments of the nineteenth century. Modern beer, however, has little in common with the drink that carried that name through the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Looking at a time when beer was often a nutritional necessity, was sometimes used as medicine, could be flavored with everything from the bark of fir trees to thyme and fresh eggs, and was consumed by men, women, and children alike,Beer in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance presents an extraordinarily detailed history of the business, art, and governance of brewing.

During the medieval and early modern periods beer was as much a daily necessity as a source of inebriation and amusement. It was the beverage of choice of urban populations that lacked access to secure sources of potable water; a commodity of economic as well as social importance; a safe drink for daily consumption that was less expensive than wine; and a major source of tax revenue for the state. InBeer in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Richard W. Unger has written an encompassing study of beer as both a product and an economic force in Europe.

Drawing from archives in the Low Countries and England to assemble an impressively complete history, Unger describes the transformation of the industry from small-scale production that was a basic part of housewifery to a highly regulated commercial enterprise dominated by the wealthy and overseen by government authorities. Looking at the intersecting technological, economic, cultural, and political changes that influenced the transformation of brewing over centuries, he traces how improvements in technology and in the distribution of information combined to standardize quality, showing how the process of urbanization created the concentrated markets essential for commercial production.

Weaving together the stories of prosperous businessmen, skilled brewmasters, and small producers, this impressively researched overview of the social and cultural practices that surrounded the beer industry is rich in implication for the history of the period as a whole.

                                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Primarily an economic history of beer.......2005-05-26

The title is deceptively simple. Those looking for some sort of popular history of beer may come away disappointed that this book emphasizes primarily the economic history of beer rather than its social aspects. Nor is this book an ode to the drink itself, but rather a tightly focused study of the importance of beer to Medieval/Renaissance economics and trade patterns. Most of its chapters are focused on taxation and trade, with just enough information on the act of brewing itself to interest the lay reader--more than likely, someone with an interest in beer itself. The last couple chapters, on guilds and the decline of beer, get into the cultural aspects.

This book is still an important contribution because it (understatedly) discusses how beer has evolved and how its role differs from the leisure and "party time" image it has now.

4 out of 5 stars Scholarly, factual, deeply interesting.......2004-11-06

Richard Unger blows a lot of the dust off the casually quoted historical dogma of the "better beer" world. Hops were used for centuries before their description by a nun, and gruit, a mixture of herbs and spices used to flavor beer prior to the use of hops, was actually still popular AFTER hops were introduced. Unger doesn't just quote the last "beer writer" he read when he makes these statements, he cites primary sources, economic records, contemporary correspondence in 60 pages of footnotes and bibliography.

The result is a book that brings to life the beginnings of commercial brewing. Brewing went from a household chore to a commercial enterprise during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, built trade empires, influenced civilizations. Unger puts beer in its proper place in European history as an integral keystone of trade, a solid source of cash taxes, and a perfect example of how over-regulation can kill an industry.

The striking thing about this book for a student of contemporary brewing is not the techniques, the character of the beer. It is the parallels between beer's rise in this period and beer's revival in the 20th Century. Nothing is new under the sun: there were contract brewers, stunningly hopped beers, hugely successful imports, fad beers that really only changed names, fruit beers, and wild advertising. Today's innovations? Not hardly.

Definitely a scholarly work, and tough slogging at times to get through the tax chapters. But full of meat and well worth the effort.

                                          Book Description

This volume, and its companion volume on the spermatozoon, provide a wide-ranging analysis of the gametes and their reproductive role in humans. The authors give a detailed account of the oocyte that includes particularly helpful information on female infertility and its treatment. The book starts with an evolutionary perspective before focusing on the molecular and cellular biology of the oocyte and its structure and function. The development and maturation of the oocyte is also fully described, including an account of the endocrine and paracrine regulation of ovarian function. Practical issues such as oocyte storage and ovarian stimulation are also fully covered. The volume will be an essential source of information for all clinicians and scientists with an interest in human reproduction.
