A very nice book.......2007-09-22
Covers all the basic skills needed to build a good set of wheels. I am happy with the book, but it would have been nice to see some additional hints for beginners.
Misinformation, unspecific, fluffy and stretched, poor translation.......2007-09-09
I don't understand someone could stand to read more than five pages of this book without feeling the overwhelming disappointment associated with knowing that he has just wasted his money.
First, the book is horribly translated. It's not so bad that the book is incomprehensible, but its bad enough that most people will find the reading extremely awkward.
Secondly, the book is very poorly edited and typeset. It's obvious that this book was very rushed. While I didn't notice spelling errors, there are many minor errors related to spacing and typeface. More importantly, many of the diagrams are unclear, and the pictures, although mostly color, are often blurry or poorly composed.
The book itself is mostly filler and fluff. The author starts out by disclaiming having any actual qualifications, and it goes downhill from there. It's very obvious that the author is stretching just to meet the magical 100 page mark. Some pages are nothing but rambling, somewhat disguised by the horrible translation.
Many parts of this book are completely unclear. For example, there's a section on corked wheels that I've re-read many times, and still don't understand; it doesn't explain what the benefit of corking is, or how one would do this, or even why he's mentioning it. There's an accompanying picture of a corked rim that's so poor I can't see what is intended.
This book lacks most of the specific advice that I suspect people are buying it for. For example, the author refuses to share the ordinary method for lacing wheels, on the grounds that it is "described so often in the bicycle press [that it] does not need to be described in this book too," instead recommending a VHS videotape from DT Swiss for this purpose.
The author's association with DT Swiss, which is not explicitly stated in the text, severely undermines his credibility. Much of the information that is interesting in this text is specific to the DT product line, some apparently directly copied from DT manuals.
In addition, much of the guidance the author offers is obsolete, dubious, or just plain wrong. This author repeats many common bicycle myths that have long been proven to be fallacies. He also recommends various outdated and obsolete practices, such as soldering and tying--which he describes in more detail than is present anywhere else in the book--that have been soundly discredited for use on modern bicycles.
There is very little in this book that is worthwhile reading, and so much misinformation. The fact that much of the book is confusing, incomprehensible, or inane is really just the icing on the cake. Since there is at least one excellent, definitive, and authoritative reference on the bicycle wheel, I can see absolutely no reason anyone would want to buy this book.
Great wheel building book.......2006-11-22
This book is fantastic. There's a simple step by step formula for lacing up a wheel that is better than anything I've ever read. Really.
Building a wheel isn't exactly rocket science, but if you do it wrong, you're going to have a poor quality wheel. Build it right, and your wheel will be better than a factory can turn out.
If you're looking to build a wheelset, or if you may be build 1-2 wheels a year, this is an excellent primer and reference.
Good Resource: Not a step-by-step.......2006-11-04
This is a great book to read to understand some of the concepts of wheelbuilding. It answers many of the "why" questions. It is not, however, a step-by-step guide on how to build a wheel. For instance, when attempting to build my first wheel, I wanted to know the best specific method for threading the spokes. This book does not include that and you must go elsewhere to get that information. Overall, a good augmentation to your detailed maintenance manuals.
Authored by true professional, expertly laid out.......2006-09-27
One of the frustrations many cyclists will have, aside
from the aggravation of lack of exclusive / reserved paths
in major urban areas and cities, excess of cars and pedestrians
and rainy and cold weather conditions, often is the lack of
durability of wheels, and the cost of replacing these.
Much like an automobile is most cheaply replaced by a mass
produced, commercialized vehicle outsouced to an Asian
manufacturer, 99% of cyclists are probably better off buying
their own wheels, not making them.
But for the unique individual preparing make this a hobby of
some sorts, or for the new professional in the business, this
book is "the real deal" in acquiring materials and assembling
and tuning your own wheels. Indeed, there are plenty of photographs,
illustrations, clues, explanations, and steps laid out in this book
comprising about 100 glossy pages, to help you along the way.
The costs of doing so, however, are less clear. Where and from whom
to acquire the items for assembly, and how many wheels will the cyclist
need to prepare for own use over 2 or 3 years ? Or for friends and family?
Why not just buy them, vs. acquiring a trueing device, or perhaps tools
and space for the assembly and tuning, for example?
Aside from the practical side of the book, the entertainment value is
not absent, either. It makes for an interesting read.

Great Book.......2007-02-19
Certainly a great book. Well designed. I am a hobby painter. Self taught and this book has certainly inspired me into painting some of the pictures in the book. If you love nature and painting this is simple step by step book has a wealth of information. Would certainly recommend it.

The author provides step by step instructions and photos for painting a variety of birds with oils. This is a great book for the beginner decorative oil painter.
Painting Garden Birds with Sherry C. Nelson.......2005-08-25
I've enjoyed having this book as a reference. The step by step instructions work just as well with other mediums instead of the recommended oils, so far I've painted the Wren in watercolors and the Cardinals in Acrylics.
would give this 6 stars if I could!.......2005-04-25
This is an absolutely wonderful book that any beginning artist must have. Ms. Nelson's instructions are so clear and easy to follow that anyone can produce beautiful paintings. Not only does Ms. Nelson tell you what colors to use, but what direction to make your painting strokes, how to hold the brush, what brushes to use..how much easier can you get?! I am currently working on my first bird from the book. My family can't get over how life-like my painting is. I am even surprised at the results! I am definately going to purchase more of her books and I have no doubts that eventually I'll be able to do paintings on my own once I've mastered the techniques in the book.
Great for Beginners.......2003-01-08
For new enthusiasts, this book is a must get for painting realistic birds of many varieties. The instructions are easy to follow and the illustrations are top notch. The author even gives the exact colors that are used in each painting.

Book Description
Gaffers, Grips, and Best Boys goes way beyond the usual Hollywood glamour and hype to explain every aspect of who does what in the making of a motion picture--from conception and casting to production, postproduction, advertising, and marketing here and abroad. A veteran film-industry insider, Taub takes readers through the labyrinthine world of today's studio system, sharing the candid and revealing interviews he's conducted with some of Tinseltown's most successful actors, directors, producers, and so forth. Each of Taub's subjects offers behind-the-scenes accounts of the precise role that he or she has played in making today's top-grossing (and, in some cases top-flopping) movies.

Good, but..........2006-02-24
A very good overall description of all the jobs associated witrh filmmaking. I thought that there would be a little more depth to the descriptions, but...
Essayistic.......2001-04-11
As far as I know there are two books on the subject, the other being William E. Hines' "Job Descriptions for Film, Video & CGI". From those two this book is certainly more prosa. Every major field of movie production is described through kind of essays written from industry insiders. Although the book is by no means an encyclopedia, the reader gets a good idea what those jobs really are about. If you want some insights instead of concise descriptions, buy this book.
Really helps explain what everyone does to make a movie.......1999-09-10
I really enjoyed this book. I never knew what gaffers and grips and producers actually did, but this book explains all those jobs. The book is written in the order that each person comes into a film, so you first learn about how an idea is generated, what happens with it, who gets involved next, and so on.
One thing I really liked was all the personal anecdotal information that each interviewee gave. For example, John Lithgow talks about working on the World According to Garp, and Charles Joffee talks about what it was like producing specific movies for Woody Allen.
A great book for someone who wants an enjoyable way to understand the intricacies of the filmmaking process.
It's a decent book allright, but the title is misleading........1999-02-22
_Gaffers, Grips and Best Boys_ is a great title. Unfortunately the title is misleading. The fine print is "From Producer/Director to Gaffer and Computer Special-effects creato, a behind the scenes look at who does what in the making of a motion picture."
If you're looking for good, solid information about "gaffing, gripping and best boying" forget it. It's just one of the subjects touched on in this book.
It's a decent book allright, but the title is misleading. If I had seen it in a book store I would have passed it by.

3 X 3 Eyes: Curse of the Gesu is the second book in this highly entertaining Japanese comics series that deals with a Tokyo high-school student named Yakumo who meets up with a 300-year-old girl (with three eyes) named Pai. In the first book, Pai's desire to become a human led the pair to Hong Kong to search for the thing that would make her wish come true. In Curse of the Gesu, Yakumo and Pai return to Tokyo. Yakumo can't wait to tell all his school buddies that he was in Hong Kong fighting monsters. Unfortunately, when another monster comes to attack Pai, he puts all his friends in jeopardy. Curse of the Gesu is full of incredibly dry humor that will have you laughing your head off in amazement.
Book Description
The second volume of one of Japan's longest running manga series is now back in print in an English-language edition, reformatted to match the current 3x3 Eyes titles. Yakumo is an ordinary Tokyo high-school student who is helping a not-so-ordinary 300-year-old girl from Tibet named Pai on a quest to discover a way for Pai to become human, a quest that exposes Yakumo to the terrors best kept in nightmares. But when Yakumo returns to Japan thinking he can resume his old life, he discovers that the evils of hell have come with him!

Immortality...What's the Drawback?.......2002-11-15
I love 3x3 Eyes. It's one of the first Anime I ever saw and the first manga I ever read. Even re-reading it now it's still amazing.
The main reason is Yakumo. Yakumo is an ordinary Tokyo teenager. Unlike most supernatural stories, he's no martial artist, he doesn't delve into magic. He likes bikes and he lives alone and he's completely unremarkable.
Until he becomes immortal. He gains no super-strength, he still can't fight, he's got no magic. He just can't die. And since most of the stuff that's after him is really kickin, his strategy is to throw himself at the bad guys and while they're beating him to a bloody pulp, Pai (the girl he's protecting) can run to safety.
He also still feels pain. Immortality is really a kind of torture for him. Later on in the series, he takes some time out and learns to fight. However, the enemies get stronger and he's back to his original strategy.
I think it's a really fresh and interesting view of immortality. And there's loads of humour and quirkyness in it it. 3x3 Eyes has lots of good points, but that's my favourite and what really makes it stand out.
Sazan = 3 eyes.......2002-06-27
3X3 eyes, or "Sazan Eyes" is the name of a well-written manga series by Takada Yuzo. It is a supernatural story mixed together with romance, comedy, and loads of violence (and blood).
To summarize the story ^_^:
Fujii Yakumo was a normal high school teenager. Well, the series starts when he's 17 but he has to drop out when he died/became immortal. He also works half time in Culture Shock, a *coughcoughcoughgaybarcoughcough* in Shinjuku ^_^.
********
Yakumo's father is an archeology professor that traveled to Tibet to study the legend of the Sanjiyan Unkara (meaning 3 eyes or triclops). He died there from natural cause while trying to get out of Yunnan (a Chinese province near Tibet) and after acquainting with Pai. Before he died, Yakumo's father understood that Pai wished to become a human and therefore sent a letter with her to Yakumo. (Why does Pai want to become human? The Sanjiyan Unkara are beautiful,LONG LIVING, creatures. As the old ones, become...old, the longer sanjiyan are more emotional and develop split personalities. The Sanjiyan believe this mental thing will kill them all (their ultimate end ^^) and so want to become human.)
**********
When Yakumo meets Pai and...reads his father's letter, he's a little...overwhelmed and doesn't quite believe the story. Until Takuhi (meaning "man bird"), who (I think) attacked Yakumo and...killed him. But as he was dying, Pai, or Parvati IV, merged her soul with his, making him immortal, a "wu" (none/void/nothing). Yakumo is now...wahla! The living dead, or some kind of zombie. However, Yakumo is pretty much the same, the "wu" can eat, have emotions, so forth. Except, he'll never bleed to death, can heal himself, and grow back an arm or leg he loses in combat. Creepy, huh ^_^?
So, now, Pai and Yakumo start searching for Ningen no Zou (Statue of Humanity), a statue that can make Sanjiyan humans by using 3 sanjiyans, striping two of the sanjiyan's powers from them and tranferring them to the third. It's not going to be easy though, will demons and evil also going after the statue and making sure nothing stands in its way.
***************************
Sazan Eyes is truly a good story and I really enjoyed it. There are some nudity, and other things above PG in it however, so I recommend it for 17+ or people who don't care much about hentai.
...
Not Bad.......2001-01-06
Well I baught this book from others reviews and I thought it was sapost to be awsome. But I didn't care for it much. Than again I'm more a Sci-fi fan and not a fantasy fan. This is the second book of the manga series 3x3 eyes. I havn't figured out the plot yet but what it's about is a guy who is a zombie and is protecting this demon who has split personalities. He runs into this ungly demon who wants to become immortal(the zombie is immortal) and the demon with split personalities kills the other demon. The only thing I think is okay is the drawing, but the story and plot kindof sucks. I don't recomend this book for younger viewers cause it has some brief nudity and fantasy violence.
Love Manga.......2000-05-14
This is a great Manga. I love the video series, which is now not being sold, because the distributor went out of business. The whole series is great, charming, funny, and interesting with an added element of a little horror/gruesome fight scenes. Any anime lover will adore this book!

Waterwoman Novel Review.......2004-10-25
Waterwoman
Lenore Hart
Berkley Books
ISBN: 0-425-18471-4
Hardcover $21.95
June 2003
Lenore Hart lived as a child in "old" Florida. When Hart began college the Disney World theme park was being constructed across from her parents' home. The change from rural Florida to a theme park capital was Hart's inspiration to write Waterwoman, so that she was able to capture and preserve an ageless quality of a place that changes little over time.
Waterwoman is the story of two sisters, growing up on an island off the coast of Virginia. Annie Revels, a tall, insecure woman and her sister, Rebecca, who is beautiful and desired. Initially these women live in a simple country style house and carry out their duties at home such as collecting vegetables for dinner and washing clothes, but terrible mistakes lead to jealousy and antagonism, which tears the girls' friendship and almost strips them of all that they have together.
This story is about change and he sacrifices made for family. Despite her wishes, Annie, takes over the challenge of household chores when her grandmother passes away due to a chain of severe heart attacks. Annie has always dreamed of being a waterwoman and working on the sea. As her father is a waterman, she is privileged on occasions to accompany her father at sea and learn the basics of the profession. Annie then thinks when her father dies as a result of an unfortunate fishing tragedy, that she must provide the money for the family. While her sister remains at home caring for their mother and doing the household chores, Annie, takes over her father's profession and becomes a waterwoman.
Waterwoman is written in a manner that only provides the audience a view of what Annie is experiencing, the use of first person narrative enables the audience to have contact with Annie's emotions and also provides an insight to what she is experiencing. Other characters, such as Rebecca and Mrs Revels, are not expressed in the same manner; they are portrayed through what Annie's experiences and through her thoughts. As a consequence of this, the novel becomes biased, as the audience becomes manipulated and unable to understand the emotions of the other characters.
Waterwoman is unrealistic; in the way that one misfortune is followed by another, like a chain of unlikely events, hitting Annie in every direction she faces. This novel is almost like a fairytale, as Annie falls for men too quickly, but they all end up breaking her heart. The issues in Waterwoman follow a pattern like a roller coaster ride; times of contentment are followed by times of grief and after a while the novel becomes a bit predictable. As the audience continues the novel, they begin to ride this roller coaster along with Annie, in order to see what rough moments will hit her next.
Hart has targeted a mature female audience, from the age of 16 to 25. Waterwoman is targeted towards a female audience as the main characters in this novel are female and this novel covers issues that are very common for a female audience of this age, therefore because of this, the audience is able to relate well to the characters and become entangled in the novel until reading is complete.
Despite flashbacks that alter the linear narrative and the fact that this novel is described as belonging to a poetic genre, Hart's style is very basic, as it uses simple, accessible language. Hart works on developing Annie's character throughout the novel, each personal obstacle that Annie experiences and overcomes, makes her more internally stronger and determined to make everything work out in the end.
Waterwoman.......2004-06-11

The change from rural Florida to a theme park capital was Lenore's inspiration to write Waterwoman, so that she was able to capture and preserve an ageless quality of a place that changes little over time.
Lenore is currently working on her second novel.
Waterwoman, is the story of two sisters growing up on an island off the coast of Virginia. Annie Revels, a tall, insecure woman and her younger sister, Rebecca, who is beautiful and desired carry out their duties at home, but terrible mistakes lead to jealousy and antagonism which tears the girls friendship and almost stripping them of all they have together.

When her father passes away by an unfortunate fishing tragedy, Annie continues her father's job in becoming the provider for the family while her sister does the jobs at home.
Waterwoman, is written in first person narrative, this is good, as we are able to understand Annie's emotions. This novel is also biased, because we are not hearing any of the other characters voices.
This novel is written for a mature audience. Females from the age of 16 to 25 would be best suited, because it covers issues, which are very common for an audience of this age and the main characters are female, and so females would more relate to the characters.

Eastern Shore of Virginia in the 1920s
WATERWOMAN is the poignant and bittersweet story of two sisters growing up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia between the two world wars. Annie Revels's father is a waterman pronging for oysters and putting out pots for crabs making a living for his family. Annie being older than her sister Rebecca loves going out on the boat with her father and sometimes wishes she could be working with him everyday. Her mother was ill and had to be looked after, and of course, she has to look after little Rebecca too. I loved the way Ms. Hart presents the different viewpoints of the family members, sometimes revealing the private and shocking thoughts that they have about one another.
When Annie's father suddenly dies she takes over going out on the water and providing for the family as her father did. Wearing his old clothes, working in the broiling sun doing backbreaking work day after day she realizes what her father had to do to keep them all alive. Annie has always felt Rebecca was the beautiful one, while she can only aspire to the life of a waterwoman. All changes in her life the day she meets Nathan Combs, a handsome guide working for the Cobb's brothers who takes out rich folks for fishing and hunting. Nathan is a veteran of the First World War and had a lot of ghosts of his own to bury. Annie and Nathan become friends and something more, but the lack of committing how they feel about one another brings about its own chaos.
Ms. Hart weaves a tale of love and relationships that is powerful, compelling and a must read. This is a rare gem of a book that you will be thinking about long after you read the last page. I could be wrong, but I have a feeling it isn't over yet! I can't wait to read the next book from this talented author.
Suzanne Coleburn, Reader To Reader Reviews
Excellent!.......2003-02-20
I read Lenore Hart's "Waterwoman" with great interest, as she set her story in a region of the country that my ancestors have lived and worked - as watermen - for 300 years. She beautifully depicted the life of the people of the barrier islands off of the coast of Virginia - it could have been my grandmother's story! Hart's characters's dialog, motivations, and actions were dead-on, and yes, you weep for Annie's losses in the end. But! Hart knows what she is doing - she writes what she knows to be true to the characters she has created so close to "the real thing."
Disappointing..........2002-10-05
Despite others raving about this book, I wasn't really crazy about it. The premise - a young woman struggling to find her place in a world with a beautiful younger sister and a father who won't let her pursue her true longing - is interesting, but somehow, I just couldn't become emotionally invested in the characters. At the end, I felt like my time would have been better spent reading something else.

Little is heard about the fighting on the Golan Heights between Israeli & Syrian forces during the Yom Kippur war, but those familiar with the terrain & environs of the Golan Heights & the Galilee region as a whole, can have little doubt as to the difficulties facing the combatants on both sides and the very harshness of the campaign.
This excellent book is about the conflict here during the 1973 war, where the Syrian Army massed on the Golan Heights, attempted to strike in a lighting offensive drive towards the Mediterranean Sea, thereby cutting Israel in two during the most Holy period in the Jewish calendar, with the Israeli military at it's most vulnerable.
This outstanding study details the make-up of the Syrian forces which consisted of a vast amount of new Soviet equipment/weaponry & comprising of some 1,200 main battle tanks, 1,000 armoured personnel carriers & some 1,000 artillery pieces, not to mention the vast numbers of infantry.
The book presents a number of interviews taken over a five year period from participants of both sides during the fighting and covers one of the greatest tank battles fought anywhere since World War 2, even detailing many ýintimate' accounts of ýtank against tank' battles during the combat.
We are provided with remarkable accounts of incredible courage and an analysis of how an inferior number of Israeli troops inflicted one of the greatest defeats in military history upon considerably greater Arab armoured forces. Notably, every single Israeli tank engaged in combat, being numerically inferior, was hit by hostile fire.
An exploration is provided into how the end of this conflict resulted in the Syrian Army being virtually destroyed in the field (including largely ignored or forgotten Iraqi & Jordanian contingents) and with Israeli artillery within range of striking Damascus, the Syrian capital.
A highly recommended, excellent account of yet another pivotal battle in this turbulent region.

Book Description
Architecture/Race and Ethnic Studies
The first sustained examination of the hidden and explicit ways racial ideology is expressed in the built environment.
Mapping the relationship between race and architecture, the authors of this volume explore the vexed if often unspoken ways in which notions of "difference" figure in the shaping of the built environment. The terms of architectural design and study-"space, site, form, architect, and user"-are derived from the historical task of adapting space to an existing socioeconomic structure. Exposing the racial subtext in this language of vision and logic, this book brings to light the complex connection between the question of identity and the questions architecture poses: Whose pleasures are pursued, who gets to build what, whose histories and experiences are represented, whose voice is heard?
The heavily illustrated volume is structured by scale: from the scale of the urban (1:125,000) to the "middle" scale of 1:1,250 (exile, "in-between-ness") to 1:1, the scale of detail, the intimate, the personal. The authors, working from a wide variety of backgrounds, take up topics ranging from Victorian attitudes toward racial hierarchy to a rereading of the Argentinean urbanscape through tango, from the disintegration along racial lines of the contemporary U.S. city to the racially polarized profession of architecture in South Africa. Whether investigating issues of black spatial identity or tracing the visual-textual-material threading of race through an architectural project, whether focusing on Europe in the 1400s or Australia today, their work reclaims a hidden cultural experience built into the very walls that frame our lives.
