Beautiful pictures but damaged.......2007-01-09
I bought this for my father for Christmas. The pictures in the book were beautiful and the layouts were a nice added touch. However, the cover of the book was scratched and torn, like it had been mishandled. Unfortunatly, because it took so long to get to me, I didn't have time to send it back and get a new one. The book its self was beautiful however the condition was disapointing and destracted from the beauty of the book.

Drawing Dynamic Comics.......2007-08-23
This is a good book to learn the skill of drawing from. anyone that is interested in drawing comics should buy this book
Great!!.......2007-01-16
This is a great item to get into my collection. Definately a buy that is well worth it.
A lost teaching opportunity.......2006-01-15
As a novice, I am looking for an introduction to drawing human figures for comics and graphic novels. This book has some useful lessons, especially drawing faces. But unfortunaletly, most of it is a summary of important drawing concepts, such as panel composition, horizon lines, basic shapes, rather than lessons on how to do it. For example, we see the basic human shape and proportional hieght of sections of the body, and how "heroic" proportions differ. But unlike the face lesson, there are no steps to get from blank page to figure. The lesson of drawing ears is very good, but only as far as it goes. That is, drawing faces that takes up a whole page of your sketchbook is fine, and certainly a necessary skill, but how does that scale down to a face the size of postage stamp? Perhaps the reader is supposed to figure that out for himself. Hence the title of this review: A lost teaching opportunity, which is to say there is poor pedagogy. The author missed a chance to organize the book as a series of lessons, from basic skills (like drawing large faces), through simplification for comic scale drawings and style. Its not bad as far as it goes...it just doesn't go far enough.
Good solid book!!.......2005-12-10
OK, it's NOT "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" OR "DC Comics guide to Pencilling" but this book ranks up there with books by Chris Hart.
Plus: Andy Smith is a Joe Kubert School alumus: can't go wrong with..THAT!!
What made me give this book 4 stars is the INKING section!! Good solid tips on using ink/pen/brush.
The Do's and DONT'S chapter is good.
This is a solid book for INTERMEDIATE comic artists and Fine Artists who have the classical training and want to delve into the science and art of comic storytelling!!
Worth the price.
Great help.......2004-04-14
This book is worth getting. Andy Smith gives great tips to help you draw better, how to use simple shapes to form figures and objects. Of all the books I have gotten a lot of books on drawing and this one just help it all click. I recommend it for anyone who wants to learn how to draw.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for film photographers converting to digital.......2004-11-02
I am a professional photographer/ retoucher who has helped the high volume commercial product studio where I work go digital, and I highly reccomend this book for professional photographers making the transition to digital.
I think the previous reviewer who was unhappy with this book really needed a book simply about professional lighting for photography-- You can use all the same types of studio lighting (strobes, hot lights, etc...) with digital that you can with conventional photography. This book also provides wonderful alternatives for conventional photo lighting techniques that cannot be reproduced digitally, such as light painting (pack up the hosemaster).
For imaging professionals like the previous reviewer who are interested in learning how to light professionally, I reccomend The Photographer's Guide to Using Light by Ted Schwartz. For veteran pro-photographers lost in the digital world (and I know you're out there) this book is a godsend--read & memorize every word.
Not a book about professional digital photography.......2004-03-25
This is not a technical resource for professionals. I am a digital imaging specialist that has spent thousands of hours using Photoshop to retouch, color correct and manipulate images in Photoshop.
I was very disappointed by this book, as I was hoping that it would teach me about which lights to use with digital cameras and how to use them to achieve pleasing effects.
Although a few lights were listed in the photo captions, they were not discussed adequately.
The book was written in a very readable style (I read it in less than 2 hours), but is too short (102 p + appendixes). Largely it is a book about Photoshop: basic color correction and sharpening of images, adding noise, and using masks to combine images on different layers.
There is nothing wrong with the material presented, it just isn't about "professional digital photography." This is a nice book for hobbyists who want to know a little more about Photoshop.
A great book on lighting for digital photography.......2003-06-09
Some books are so good that, after reading them, you want to share the experience with others. That's exactly what happened with Professional Digital Photography -- hence this review.
I think I need to qualify my review. I am an amateur with experience in film and digital. I got interested in digital because powerful tools are more affordable than their film counterparts. For example, I don't need tons of filters, hugely expensive light kits or my own color lab; Photoshop and a good photo printer go a long way for a fraction of the price.
With this in mind, I am frustrated by recent titles on digital photography. Half of the books out there are essentially dictionaries. What's a CCD, what's a pixel, what's a computer? Yeah right.
The other half are "me too" books on Photoshop tips and tricks. How to use adjustment layers, how to use the stamp or the corrector tool, and more. Useful but how many copycats do we need?
Professional digital photography dare to be different. It focus on one specific topic: lighting for digital photography (including color correction and creative lighting) and it offers tons of information on the topic.
The author share his (and his brother) experience on the subject. The book includes both a solid theoretical background and lots of practical (how-to) information. It discusses in great details those techniques that are unique to the digital process, showing you how to get more from the tools you already know.
I feel like I'm on the other side of the mirror and have just stumble upon a fascinating new world. Dave Montizambert is a great guide in this journey.
A word of warning though: as the other reviewer noted, this is not an book for beginners. Nor is it complete. If you are total novice to lighting, get yourself a reference in addition to this book (I recommend the "Lighting for..." series from Rotovision). But if you're past novice and you would like to get progress, make sure you get your own copy. You won't regret it.
unique...a nice addition but not a comprehensive reference........2002-08-29
Like many Amherst books, this doesn't boast the best printing - the production and binding seems more like what you'd expect in the 1980s. The writing is not as lean and well organized as it could be. Expect something more like a narrative/essay than a start-to-finish how-to book. The book does not so much focus on using a digital camera as it does on shaping the image itself, mostly via Photoshop. It addresses some worthwhile topics that I have not so far seen covered elsewhere. If I were limited to only one book on digital photography, I would pick something different and much more comprehensive. The book does have some good points to make though.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review
"It can wear you to a nub, trying to be a popular person and a good Catholic all at the same time." So says Sidda, one of the characters inhabiting Little Altars Everywhere. Author Rebecca Wells uses her considerable acting talent to perform this abridgment, adding even more spark to her already lively characters. Everyone--Shep, Vivi, Willetta, and the rest--is given a distinct voice, and Wells plays each of them to the hilt. More like a recording of a one-woman show than a mere reading, Altars is an excellent example of how entertaining audiobooks can be. (Running time: 3 hours, 2 cassettes) --C.B. Delaney

Customer Reviews:
Emotional Roller Coaster.......2007-09-26
This book was fabulous - not quite as groundbreaking as the "Divine Secrets.." but still fabulous nonetheless. It made me smile, it made me think, and it made me cry - all the things a good book should do and more. Buy it - read it! Enjoy.
A Strongly Written Book About Growing Up.......2007-07-26
This isn't *really* my kind of book - it reminded me eerily of something like Margaret Laurence's "A Bird In The House", given it is a collection of interwoven short stories told from the perspectives of different members of a small-town Louisiana family, most notably from the character of Siddalee.
So why am I giving it four stars? Well there wasn't anything I didn't like about it. I found the prose easy to get through and imaginative. The stories for the most part were captivating and enchanting. The characters were well developed and familiar despite our polar opposite lives. The plot moved enough from section to section to keep me interested. I can't justfiy giving it a lower mark just because it's not my preferred style (ie: novel over short stories) or preferred subject matter (ie: modern day as opposed to the past).
The stories revolve around two points in the character's lives - their childhoods in the 1960's and their relatively young adulthood in the early 1990's. Vivi is their eccentric, perhaps dangerously so, mother who also features in the ya ya sisterhood book. Interestingly enough this book was written before (and publicized after) the ya ya sisterhood - yet there are frequent mentions of the ya ya's and some dark secret they share and so on...so I'm guessing that book was simultaneously in the works as this one. Big Shep is Vivi's husband, a working class man who makes a few poor choices that make him forget how to love.
Their children include the eldest daughter Siddalee, who is probably the most identifiable as the main character in the book. Sidda goes through several phases of independence/autonomy and relying on her family for guidance. Her younger brother Lil Shep doesn't feature much in the book other than his desire to be freed from the nasty secrets his family is keeping. I can't remember the next siblings name, I think it's Lulu, who stars in my favourite story in the book about petty theives and liars. Finally there is Baylor, the youngest, who lives in a dream both as a child and an adult.
Overall this is a nice, slow read...it's enjoyable to drink up on lazy summer days in bits and pieces, and very much personifies the southern climate it describes.
The last chapter is worth the entire book.......2007-04-01
This was the hardest read in the Ya-Ya series. I didn't always like it. It felt disjointed and uneven and some chapters (they were like vignettes, strung together) I started and then just skimmed or left unread.
The final chapter, however - was worth the entire experience. I wish we could have heard from this voice, the adult voice of Siddalee, through the entire thing. Baylor, yeah - he was good, too. There were no other Ya-Ya's (except in passing, where were "the gang" we love so much in Divine Secrets and Ya-Ya's in Bloom?). This book, the prequel to the rest was mostly Vivi's family.
I was reading someplace, maybe it was here, readers were upset about a revelation that takes place in this book. I guess I am weird in that I would rather have the characters in the books I read be flawed, be human.
Vivi is messed up. Ya-Ya readers know that. Her parents were messed up, her children are messed up albeit differently. "Little Altars" begins with Sidda as a pissed-off-on-the-edge-of-puberty girl scout and ends with Sidda as a late 30's woman, the woman who we see several years later narrating half of Divine Secrets.
I don't expect my "heroines" to be wind up toys or robots or flawless automatons. I would rather they be real.
And this volume, in my estimation, doesn't do it.
I think it was written first. But that last chapter. Oh my, that last chapter. I sat at my kitchen table sobbing and my daughter Katherine, from the living room said, "Mommy? Are you ok?" I hadn't realized I was so loud!
Read the last chapter. Pick it up at the bookstore and read it.
Here is one group of sentences as a preview for you:
"As far as I'm concerned, if you could bottle that smell, all the companies that make Xanax, Prozac and Valium would be out of business. You could just open the bottle and smell Willetta and never feel panicked or depressed again."
Love it.
Severely mis-lead.......2006-12-30
I first read Divine Secrets... and then read this book, and very much felt lied to by the author. In the second book the mother is basically lovable, well almost, but flawed. Then I went and read the first book Little Altars Everywhere and read that the mother is sexually abusing her children. This did not come up in Divine Secrets at all and to me seems like a bunch of bull crap. I know that Divine Secrets is mostly from the daughters point of view and that the mother was sexually abusing her sons, but evenstill. On its own it would be a much better book.
hard to slog through.......2006-11-18
this is poorly written about a nasty dysfunctional drunk southern family. sometimes when you get a book you enjoy it so much you either don't want to stop reading at all or you want to read it slowly so you have more time with it. well, this does not fall into either category. save your money.

Book Description
This long-awaited dictionary provides an extensive list of ancient, beautiful Sanskrit names with their significance and spiritual meanings. Numerous references to classical scriptures of India are included to help in research and further study of a name. The special qualities implied by each name, such as particular aspects of God, character traits, and spiritual virtues are highlighted with cross-references to other names having the same quality.
Customer Reviews:
Dictionary is what it is.......2006-07-03
Well, when I bought this book, I though it would help me find a name. But the name listings are not as many as I thought would be. What this book is...is a dictionary. If you know what the meaning of a name is, then use this book as a reference. I did not find it real helpful to find a baby name.
Complete waste of money........2004-09-14
1. Devanagiri spellings of names are not available.
2. There are not many names.
Readers will benefit more if they use 'the Oxford Hindi English Dictionary' by R.S. McGregor or similar dictionaries and look for names with Sanskrit origin.
Poorly researched collection.......2001-06-22
It has many erroneous entries. Many names listed here are not of Sanskrit origin.
Good Reference.......2001-01-29
This book is a good collection of Sanskrit names and their meanings from various contexts and commentaries. I don't think this is a complete collection of all the remarkable names that exist in this great language. Many of the missing names(?) that can't be found in this book are from Yoga itself. This is a good reference book and the authors did good job in compiling the names. I was disappointed to find that a book from Yoga Institute does not have complete resource of the names of Yoga itself in this book.
Fantastic resource for modern and historical names.......1999-06-05
This book is well designed and well organized, offering a unique service. With its pronunciation guide, serves as a great introduction to Sanskrit, as well as mythology. Highly recommended!

Great List of Literary Names.......2005-05-10
Not only did this book give us many names to add to our list of possibilities for our baby-to-be, it was also an interesting read. As a mom it was a great reminder of all the classic books I have read, and how much I loved (and hated) the characters within them (too little time to read until the kids get a bit older).
This book lists names from ancient to contemporary with a little blurb on who that person was in what work. A wonderful way to choose a name that means something and just doesn't sound pretty. The only drawback was that not enough types of works were included, but that is a minor issue - everyone enjoys different types of literature, it would have been impossible to include them all to please everyone.
To the person who thinks the names would be easily found online is mistaken. There were names from books I wouldn't have thought of to look up online - names on my list that I might not have come across otherwise. And that may have made a big difference in the name of my child.
Great gathering-together of literary names.......2004-04-27
I've always been interested in unusual names (though for girls more so than boys); in fact, the two girls' names which have been my favourites the longest are Easter and Echo. This book is for those of us who wouldn't mind naming a child Desdemona, Calliope, Lysander, or Perseus. The names in this book come from Shakespeare, Boccaccio, Dante, myths from Greece, Rome, Ireland, and Norway, and many other poems, plays, and novels from throughout history. Instead of having to look all over a bunch of books, like Shakespeare, Greek mythology, and 'The Decameron,' for example, you have all of these names right here, alphabetised and with little synopses of who this character was and what s/he did. Though the people who are into names like MacMadisonleigh and Quaitlynne probably won't like the names in this book, but who can argue with taste?
Not worth the money or effort to read it!.......2003-03-11
This book was full of ridiculous sounding names. I am so disappointed that I bought this book, it seems like the author took no time at all to actually "write" the book. What a waste!
DO judge this book by it's ...cover!.......2003-02-16
This has to be the lamest baby name book ever. I thought it would be an interesting source for helping us choose a baby name -- I was wrong. It's jam packed with both repetative and [poor] suggestions that anyone could have gotten for free on the internet with little or no effort -- which is I'm sure what the author probably did.
One star is far too generous! Oh well...buyer beware!

Book Description
Between 1922 and 1924, the young anthropologist T. F. McIlwraith spent eleven months in the isolated community of Bella Coola, British Columbia, living among the people now known as the Nuxalk First Nation. During his time there, McIlwraith gained intimate knowledge of the Nuxalk culture and of their struggle to survive in the face of massive depopulation, loss of traditional lands, and the efforts of the Canadian government to ban the potlatch.
This volume is a rich complement to McIlwraith's classic ethnography The Bella Coola Indians (1948), incorporating his letters from the field as well as previously unpublished essays on the Nuxalk. Vivid and lively, the letters show the human side of the anthropologist, and provide a fascinating insight into the famous Northwest winter ceremonials and potlatch--events in which McIlwraith was one of the few white men privileged to participate.

Book Description
Patch-Clamp Applications and Protocols presents the broadest coverage of techniques for measuring and recording directly activity within a cell. The first part of the book offers modern developments associated with the technology of path-clamp electrodes, of cell-free ion-channel recording, and of the whole-cell patch clamp technique.
Chapters on such recent offspring of the technique as the concentration clamp technique, the pressure clap method, and the perfusion of patch clamp electrodes are contributed by authors intimately involved with their development. Also covered is the loose patch-clamp technique, single-channel recording, the perforated patch-clamp technique, molecular biological aspects of the technique, and the use of the technique in brain slices.
Every scientist working with path-clamp methods will find this protocols manual invaluable to their continued use and development of this powerful technique.
Customer Reviews:
A concised patch clamp book.......2006-03-10
Alan Boulton's book has been an asset to young "patchers" since we used it.A recommended book in our Master of Neurosciences syllabus of the University Sains Malaysia,I recommend it as important reading material next to 4 other books.
Although a few years old these important informations contained in these chapters are something you cannot get from other "similar" books.A recommended patch clamp recipe book.Do not start experiments without it.
