What a P.o.S........2007-02-28
"A step-by-step guide to creating stunning, futuristic images" is on the front cover of the book. Yet none of the examples have more than ten steps. For images this detailed, there are about a thousand steps the "author" omitted. The artwork is excellent, but the tutorials are an absolute joke. Do yourself a favor and type in "sci-fi art" in google images, and save your money.

It is no more than this. It has some fair techniques on how to achieve several effects, but someone cannot expect to learn how to make digital sci-fi art.
Also, it seems a little outdated now, even though the copyright says 2004.
My opinion is do not waste money on some collection of outdated artwork and look for something else.

I really enjoyed reading this book and the pictures are marvellous. Also, the way it covers Sci-Fi with the usage of various software is revealing. Very good!
Another great book by Michael Burns........2006-03-30
This book makes a great coffee table book for those who like great Sci-Fi computer art. And it also makes a great learning and reference book for those who want to create similar art of their own. It helps to be artistic and have software knowledge in order to make great artwork of your own, which people do curse this book for. But the examples (and there are many) found in this book will only promote creativity and conquer modeler's block.

This book is really more of a book full of images that inspired me to do more sci fi art work. it has a cpl of pseudo tutorials that are good. If you are doing this for the first time i would suggest something else. But as a person who needs inspiration for actually sitting down and doing something I would suggest this book. It has a whole range of really well done artwork that u can get tons and tons of ideas from.

A wonderful resource and a fascinating read.......2006-01-22
Whilst writing my tome on Sears Homes, I kept Clark's book close at hand as a resource. Years earlier, I'd read it cover to cover and just loved it. "The American Family Home" is written by a college professor but it's a warm, conversational and fascinating read. Lacks the dry-as-dust technical, clunky language that some architectural writers seem to relish (and employ!).
What I love most about his book is that he explains HOW and WHY American architecture evolved the way that it did. He explains (in delicious and interesting depth) why the early-1900s bungalow was actually a specific response to the ostentatious and ornate Victorians of the late 1800s.
This book was well-researched and well written. I highly recommend it, both as an entertaining book and a wonderful resource to help you gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of America's architecture.

Few books, in my experience are written as clearly as this one. Clark leads the reader carefully and thoughtfully from 1800 to 1960, and shows why certain styles of home were popular in each era. His word choice is excellent and his sentence formation is flawless. He gives many examples and the book is well illustrated. For anyone wishing to understand why Americans have bought and built the houses they have, and what they hoped to get out of them, this is the book to buy. Get two.

Lefties Rock.......2005-05-21
Well, obviously I am left handed to read this book. In fact, I think right-handed people who read this will be very offended. But hey, they deserve it. Lefties are so underrepresented, they need something to cheer them up. The viciously funny cartoons are a real knee-slapper.
This book is great, if you are left handed or want to know how it feels to be left handed. Which everyone should.

Gripping!.......2004-05-21
This book is about the fighter pilots of the Fighter Squadron 162 - based on the USS Oriskany. This book is an excellent account of the exploits of carrier based fighter pilots. You understand their fears, their trepidations, the danger of carrier landings at night, and the general terror and excitement of flying fighter jets in Viet Nam. It's told in a "you are there" context. We feel the pain of the wives as they learn their husbands are shot down and not coming home; the strain they go through awaiting word of their husbands. The book is quite stunning and difficult to put down. It's one of the best I've read concerning the air war in Viet Nam.
History as it should be..........2003-04-20
Zalin Grant's "Over The Beach" is an account of fighter squadron 162 from the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany during the Vietnam war. Grant does a masterful job of blending the history, with the real lives of the people who were a part of that history.
The reader feels the palpable emotions of the pilots as they "crossed over the beach" on their way to targets in Hanoi and Haiphong. The squadron was incredibly successful, but with that success came great loss. Many pilots were shot down over North Vietnam where there was almost no chance of rescue. The reader also hears from those pilots who became prisoners.
Grant incorporates the history of the air conflict into the book as well. Johnson, Nixon, McNamara, and Kissinger all weigh heavily into this account. The politics of the conflict led to a war fought on confusing terms. But this doesn't read like some history text.
From the terror of carrier landings to the wild frat boy parties aboard the Oriskany, this book covers it all. From the adulterous behavior of many of the piots to the gut-wrenching roller coaster of emotions suffered by an MIA's wife, this book does not hold any punches. It may be hard to find this book (some libraries may have it) but it is one of the finest (and personal) accounts of carrier warfare in Vietnam I have ever read.

The 1966 Viet Nam cruise of the U.S.S. Oriskany (CVA 34).......1997-12-24
From the very first chapter, I knew that "Over the Beach" was the diary I had failed to keep while serving on the U.S.S. Oriskany (CVA 34) during it's deployment to the Gulf of Tonkin in 1966. Over and over again, I found myself reliving the actions described there. Instantly putting faces to the names. Remembering the 16 October 1966 fire in hangar bay one. The only mistery left is how someone who was not there know so much of the times and the people ? It was genuinely like finding an old family photo album, or listning to an elderly uncle reminise about things that happened in your youth. "Over the Beach" should be viewed as a diary into the times and minds of those that flew from Aircraft Carriers during the early Viet Nam era. It is not a book to satisfy the idle mind, but one that fills in the gaps created by time and selective amnesia. To someone in great thirst, a small tumbler of cold water will seem as an ocean. "over the beach" provided exactly the same satisfaction to me.

This book argues for the place of capacities within an grounds of meaning, not method. Yet it is questions of method that should concern the modern empiricist: can capacities be measured? Cartwright argues that they are measured if anything is. Stanford University's Gravity-Probe-B will measure capacities in a cryogenic dewar deep in space. More mundanely, we use probabilities to measure capacities, and the assumptions required to ensure that probabilities are a reliable instrument are investigated in the opening chapters of this book, where the early methods of econometrics set a model. The last chapter applies lessons about probabilities and capacities to quantum mechanics and the Bell inequalities. The central thesis throughout is that capacities not only can be admitted by empiricists, but indeed must be - otherwise the empirical methods of modern science will make no sense.

An important antidote.......2000-08-05
Enter your average philosophy department with an express interest in causality and the chances are you'll run smack into a wall of statistical correllations, probability analyses and suchlike arcania. This book provides an important rallying point for dissenters from this orthodoxy. Yet, first appearances may deceive. With its mass of equations in the style of econometric path analysis and titles like 'How to get causes from probabilities', it does give the impression of being part of the disease and not the cure. But look closer - what Cartwright is arguing is that statiistical probabilities can provide evidence for causal connections only if the probability of the effect given the presence of the putative cause-factor is higher than the probability of the effect given its absence in all those populations that are homogeneous with respect to all other causal factors. We need to know both what all these other causes are and that they are not operating at this point in time before we can use statistics to measure causes. As Cartwright puts it, 'no causes in: no causes out'. And this is why what she is saying is so radical - not only must knowledge of these causes come from sources other than statistical data, but once they are known and known not to be operating then statistical data becomes an irrelevance as what the cause is will be obvious - it will be the variable that is left over. Tim Maudlin has criticised this account for insisting on conditions that no statistician could fulfill in practice. But, as I read it, that's precisely the point. And it is made by Cartwright with great verve and skill. Yet, it does rather surprise me that it has to be made at all. The language of causation is radically different from the language of statistical correllation - try to use the latter to measure the former and you end up eliminating causation altogether. Recognition of this simple point could avoid endless wasted publications that simply assume that causation is a statistical relationship. It could enable us to reflect more closely upon the different ways and circumstances in which we use the word 'cause' and to consider critically what our causal knowledge amounts to in each. Aside from a final chapter on abstractions that I still fail to see the point of, and some occasionally unclear remarks on the concept of causal capacities, this is an excellent contribution to an often dull field.
