A must-have for anyone interested in our built environment.......1998-11-12
This book is full of amazing and inspiring photography that is only surpassed by the author's exquisitely written essays. I recommend this book to everyone who is interested in our built environment. Murcutt's ability to synthesize modern architecture with regional and environmental concerns is truly remarkable. His buildings contrast with nature in that the natural environment's raw and delicate attributes are enhanced through the comparison with the finished industrial character of his buldings. Murcutt, however, does not subvert nature to man because his buildings, with their reflective quality, depend upon the environment for their identity with facades that change with the time of day and the colors of the foliage. His buildings sit very lightly on their harsh yet delicate sites describing Murcutt's early concern for environmental preservation

It's good.......2007-04-08
I checked it out at the library to see if I wanted to buy it and I Don't. But I gave it a four star... it's not that I didn't like it, it's just too basic for me. But, for some beginners it may be too hard still. You should already know how to draw well. But, the techniques are basic. I have alot of various colored pencil books, and so I'm covered. I just wanted to check it out to see what the techniques were like. The artwork is pretty good, so there are some good starter examples for others out there. I thought the flowers were a bit on the flat side, they looked like an amateur did it. Well, I hope my review helps you decide if you should buy it or not. If not, do what I did, check it out in the library first.
Wonderful book.......2007-03-29
As a beginning colored pencil artist I have tried to read as many books as I could possibly get my hands on. This book is excellent with many excersises to improve a budding artists skills. I shared the book with an artist friend that has been using colored pencils for 40 years and she was so impressed with the book that she is purchasing a copy.

After checking this book from the library I had to have a copy for myself. It is an excellent book for learning about colored pencil techniques. I highly recommend this book if you are a beginner with colored pencils.

stanton book fails to arouse.......2007-01-05
there should have been some indication that this book was far from the standard size. it is so small that it's hardly worth the effort of looking. Stanton is a master of the form, but this meager volume is hardly the best one to enjoy his work. even as a sampler it fails.
Compared to DOMINANT WIVES not that good but worth 3 bucks........2000-11-17
I ordered DOMINANT WIVES AND OTHER STORIES at the same time I ordered this little, bity book which made this much smaller collection of Stanton's pictures, stories, etc. seem poor in comparison. There are a few good things here but spend the extra money and get DOMINANT WIVES if you want to see a more impressive view of female dominance, bondage, punishment,etc. provided by the strange, but fun, world of Eric Stanton.
A really good book, but too short.......2000-10-26
This book is really worth more than three bucks, but it is a bit short. If you like Eric Stanton book, this is a really good and cheap buy.
Great visual story telling from an acclaimed master.......1999-11-30
For those men with a special fondness for Female Superiority, this book is a keeper. It is a generous volume of some of the late Stanton's best artwork with graphic examples of women getting the better of men. Apparently, these items of work were the product of commissions, and it is interesting to ponder how widespread the desire for women to be in control of men is. There is great variation within what could be a limited field: women of colour in charge, women ganging up on single men, women in the mafia, women reassigning the house keeping chores etc. Plenty to keep one titillated. Minor drawbacks are the, at times, typographical errors, and rather hard to follow (text being very compressed) three or so stories at the start of the book. There is one story that is pure graphics with no speech. At first I thought this was deliberate but I gather it is not since the messages from the frames are not clear. But these should not get in the way of the overall enjoyment of this great compendium. All the women are beautifully drawn, quite voluptious and well endowed, and Stanton presses buttons with the mandatory sleek looking high heels supporting shapely calves: Awe inspiring art forms that tower over snivelling looking men, who appear quite insipid and rightly deferential to the REAL Stronger Sex. Great stuff!

Uncertain about teaching as a career, I reluctantly began teaching at my rival high school, only to discover myself teaching fifth grade four months later. Replacing a teacher who had been arrested and terminated from the district posed enormous challenges and brought with it a reality that males face as elementary school teachers. Society's perception of men in the elementary classroom is often negative and suspicious. My six months as a young, male elementary teacher, however, brought with it immense rewards and a feeling of satisfaction that I felt obligated to share with those who were willing to listen.
Brave Faith is my journey as a young, male teacher in the elementary school classroom, and my attempt to give a voice to the minority of men in elementary education, who all too often are not nearly as respected and honored as they should be.

The most scrupulous of the recent spate of books on the Titanic disaster, Wyn Craig Wade's book relies on survivors' accounts to establish some startling facts, including that almost two-thirds of the first-class passengers survived while only a quarter of the steerage passengers made it to safety. And that those in the lifeboats chose to ignore the piteous cries of passengers in the water, almost all of whom perished. This chilling account demonstrates that the Titanic's sinking was in many ways entirely avoidable.

Fills A Gap in the Titanic Literature.......2002-12-01
The major emphasis of the book is the United States Senate investigation into the wreck of the R.M.S. Titanic and focuses on the efforts of Senator William Alden Smith (R-Mich.), who chaired the investigative subcommittee. The book describes the thoroughness and determination of Senator Smith as he conducted the investigation and goes to great lengths to demonstrate that the United States investigation was equal to or better than the one conducted in the United Kingdom.
The major flaw in the book is its attempt to do double duty as a biography of Senator Smith. The book also contains minor factual errors that could have been weeded out by more careful proof-reading.
US Senate inquiry into Titanic sinking.......2000-05-27
This book provides an excellent review of the Titanic sinking, with the main focus being the U.S. Senate inquiry into the disaster led by Senator Smith of Michigan. There is general background information on the Titanic itself, passengers, etc, however most of the information presented is based on the Senate inquiry. Actual selected transcripts of witnesses are reproduced, and one gets the flavor of this inquiry (the entire transcript is much too long for one book) and the times it was performed in. This book presents quite a lot of information and background, especially on the times and the social climate in which this disaster took place. The social impact of the disaster is also examined by the Author in some depth. This book is a must have for all who are interested in this subject, however keeping in mind that the main focus is the U.S. Senate inquiry. Readers who are interested in other aspects would enjoy, Walter Lord's "A Night to Remember" "The Night Lives On", and Dr Robert Ballard's book on the search for the Titanic. There are also reprints of books written by Titanic surviors also available. Again, an interesting book on the times, social climate, and Senate inquiry that will probably inspire further reading on this subject.
Biased but excellent.......2000-04-27
Years ago, this was the first Titanic book I ever read, and it had an incredible influence on me. End of a Dream is a wonderfully-researched, wonderfully-written account of the aftermath, a fascinating subject given only a few pages in every other Titanic book I know of. However, it does have its flaws. I don't believe that Wade gives too much credit to Senator Smith, but I do think that in promoting his hero's place in history, he neglects some aspects of the story. For example, he pays too little attention to an area of the inquiry that raised many voices in 1912 -the question of whether news of the disaster had been covered up- as well as Philip Franklin, the major figure in that controversy. Franklin played a part in the inquiry almost as great as that of his employer Ismay, but he is a made minor figure in Wade's drama, as well as a rather ridiculous one. (He also gets his first name misspelled.) I don't mean to be over-critical of Wade, whose book was a landmark in Titanic study and remains one of the two best works on the subject today, but I do think that in order to increase the light shining on Smith he may have dimmed those shining on the equally interesting people around him. His book could have also benefited from a more appropriate title and cover blurb.
Excellent Reading.......2000-02-03
There is much information about this terrible tragedy now known due to the discovery of the Titanic and the new film.Most of this book revolves around what happened after the ship sank. William Alden Smith,a Senator from Michigan took much of the responsibility to find out exactly what happened that awful night.This is a lot of this book's content. We thank this great man for his efforts and worth reading.Mr Wade did a wonderful job.(VLS)
R/M.S. TITANIC.......2000-01-18
I have the original first editoin of this book. I have never been introduced to Wyn Craig Wade,but I have seen him in "TITANIC The Death Of A Dream" Also :Titanic The Legend Lives On" this book was first published in 1979 it is a very good book on R.M.S. Titanic. It is a must for every person's library of Titanic. I have 22 books on Titanic and I rate this very high. I have been offerd $100 ofr it and I won't sell it. Harry Love
