This book is chock full of illustrations! It has gates, doors, door arches, stair railings, and fence sections. It runs the gamut from simple to very intricate designs. If you are a designer, this is a great resource. If you just appreciate design, you will enjoy browsing through it.

Very interesting reference.......2002-04-19

I enjoyed this very much. I wish there could have been more photographs, but that would have been a different book. This is almost exclusively line drawings.

Very helpful and informative. Warning: trying to duplicate these in decorative metal today is *expensive*. Architectural salvage might be more affordable than starting from scratch.

Beautiful Work.......2001-12-12

I have a different use for this book than perhaps the typical buyer. I bought it because I love adapting these iron designs into borders or patterns for my pen and ink drawings and paintings. Each page was such a delight when I discovered this book I bought it immediately. You need not use it as a home furnishings book. It works just as well as an inspiring art book.

Great for Designers.......2001-03-15

I've worked in the Ornamental Iron business for 3 years as a designer and business manager. I use this book more than any other for generating some fresh, usually more elaborate design ideas. There are a number of styles represented in the many drawings. If you are interested in seeing unique and interesting wrought iron designs you will not be disappointed.

A MANUAL FOR DESIGNING YOUR OWN "CASTLE".......2000-08-30

This is the most comprehensive collection of beautiful designs for gates, rails, fences, walls, pillars etc. From my personal opinion, there are some designs within the book that might be even more beautiful than the ones shown on the front cover. The various styles range from quite simple to very complex (flowery type). With over 400 designs, one is sure to find a few that matches his or her own tastes. A great book for homeowners and others. Probably some of these designs could even be used in graphics and other works apart from architecture.

This book delves into the fascinating technique of adding collage elements to watercolor paintings. Basically, this is adding bits of paper of various shapes, textures & colors to the surface to enhance the painting over them.

Experimentation to develop a personal style is stressed here. Basic principles of texture, layering, contrast and color are explored first. Then you see how these elements are incorporated into finished paintings.

The author is an accomplished master of this technique. Many examples of his work are shown in progress & completed. He emphasizes throughout how artists of any level in any medium can apply these concepts to their work.

Missing parts.......2003-07-17

I was disappointed that the accomplishments and contributions of French, Spanish, Swedish, German, etc., ethnic groups to the Mississippi story was not told. I think the book gave excellent coverage of the contributions of the black ethnic groups that I was unaware. Is this a 'politically correct' version of the Mississippi story?

Misleading Title.......2000-11-06

The title of Gazza Agonistes pretends to a pitch of literary ambition that the text itself does nothing at all to bring into fulfilment. There is nothing special about the writing here - not even judged as journalism, much less as what I hoped (especially from an established poet) might be an attempt at contemporary mythopoeia. Having said that, it is very readable. I just got the wrong idea about it from the title. I only read it because of the title. Not that I regret reading it, now that I have read it.

Aptly Titled, Well Worth Reading.......2000-06-22

The title piece, "Gazza Agonistes" is 112 page mini-biography of English soccer superstar Paul Gascoigne. What makes it more than an expanded sports or style section profile is the author. Ian Hamilton is a well-known biographer, poet, and essayist, and reading someone of his caliber write about soccer as a fan is always a nice departure from the norm. Gascoigne's story--the sort of rise and stumble of a mercurial and talented boy--ends a little abruptly as he was still in the prime of his career at the time of the writing, even so, it's worth reading.

The rest of the issue includes some arresting photo portraits of WWI veterans, 30+ pages devoted to the consequences of the end of the Soviet empire, a long piece by Jonathan Rabin about the Mississippi flooding which didn't look that interesting, a 40 page short story by Ethan Canin that I also skipped, and more intriguingly, an 18 page story by Nick Hornby called "Fourteen and After." This story is basically an early draft of the earliest parts of "High Fidelity", in some areas word for word. Neat.

If you want information about the culture, politics, history, and future of the Bushmen, do not bother with this book. If you want a frequently dull personal memoir, try it. Mr.Isaacson is not Robert Kaplan, nor Paul Theroux. That is, he is neither knowledgable nor capable of bringing vivid perspective to new places. In a single word, he is sophmoric.

Not just a book, a fight against genocide.......2004-09-28

Rupert Isaacson took an amazing journey when he went to the Kalahari to re-discover the colonial roots of his anscestors and found what he didn't expect--that his family had unwittingly contributed to the demise of a great and important people--the Bushmen. Upon meeting this hidden and displaced culture, he began a crusade to to right his inherited Karma. This book is the beginning of his journey of discovery of a remarkable people and their fight to survive in a world, that like many others, would choose to eliminate their indiginous peoples for money and power. He now, as I understand it, runs an organization called "The Indiginous Peoples Fund", helping the Bushman to reclaim their land rights and their culture. This book was the beginning of that journey. I hope h e writes a follow up book as he fight grows more successful. The book is written with great heart and love and remarkable insight into a culture so misunderstood. I have never been to South Africa and because of the book's in depth description, I felt as if I now can taste some of what it must be like. Truly a journey worth taking.

This author knows his subject.......2003-05-15

After getting used to mystical experiences over the past 12 years in Botswana's Tsodilo Hills and in Bushmanland, in north-eastern Namibia, I can attest that this author has been there and seen a world that's magical beyond most Westerners' imaginings. Anyone who wants to know the real Southern Africa - that is, the incredibly harsh yet enigmatic environment that thrived prior to both the Bantu and Colonial influences - will find this book a most satisfying introduction.
