This is a wonderful book for anyone dreaming of restoring a Victorian home. Lots of pictures but also well researched and interesting text. Helpful for those of us who do not want to model "mimic" our rooms after a specific photo spread in a book, but would like to understand, incorporate, and enjoy the historic details of our beautiful homes.

A useful book.......2006-09-17
This book can be useful for both beginning muralists and those with more experience.
1 - Beginners: For someone wanting to paint a mural in their child's bedroom, for example, the techniques in this book are ideal - and will easily achieve excellent results. It is even possible to involve the child in some of the simpler methods - if say, between age 6 and 13.
2 - Experienced painters: Before seeing this book, I had already used some of the sponging techniques in my own murals, i.e. to create a soft cirrus cloud haze, or the spray from breaking waves. (It is important to note that there are many different sponges, and natural sponges give very different effects depending on which side you use.) Where details are required, these can be added using brushes of various shapes and sizes as well as various media to achieve the desired effect. It was helpful to match the method of application to the effect wanted, and not be limited by traditional tools.
It is not a modern innovation to experiment with materials on hand, including household utensils and ingredients. After all, the old masters tried many different tools and techniques, no doubt raiding the cook's kitchen for their purposes! (From where else did we get egg tempera?)
I can definitely recommend this book, alongside the likes of Jean Dyrsdale Green's "Arteffects" - which includes sponging techniques using other materials (such as crumpled newspaper or a scrunched up length of masking tape.) Painting Murals Fast and Easy can be a great stimulus for the innovative artist.
Don't bother.......2006-06-30
I got this book because it seemed interesting, but I really don't care for it. For me, the paintings aren't detailed enough. You can't get a lot of little detail with a sponge. Sure, sponges can be used for some parts of a painting, but not for the whole thing if you want a lot of detail. It's the little details that make a painting more interesting to look at.

Essential for Gallery and Museum Educators.......2007-02-09
I'd missed this book. It was in the library of the museum I worked for previously. Now that I serve as a curator of education in a non-profit gallery with an entire gallery dedicated to photography, a guidebook to photographic processes is essential. The book's beautiful layout and illustrations makes it a delight. Anyone interested in understanding historical or contemporary photography will benefit from this book.
A good but dated reference.......2003-05-15
Baldwin's slim lexicon is an excellent addition to the library of anyone interested in the history of photography. The 122 headwords are well defined and are amply illustrated with color and monochrome images. The vocabulary covers photographic processes from the early 19th century through the early/middle of the 20th. The lack of terms from the 1940s to the present is the one significant flaw in this book.
Unlike some dictionaries, one can easily sit down and read this from cover to cover, flipping around for definitions as necessary (terms elsewhere defined are printed in small-caps). Synonymous entries are cross-referenced to the primary entry.
Coverage of digital photography is minimal, but given the time it was written (1991) this is understandable. Also missing are terms like Kodachrome or Ektachrome (though mentioned in the entry for "Chromogenic Print"). Other terms I had hoped to see included 'Colorama', 'Land', 'Polaroid' (though this is alluded to in the entry for 'Dye Diffusion Print'), Giclees/Iris Prints, Lightjet Prints, Image Transfer, Emulsion Transfer, SX-70 manipulation, and no doubt many others I'm not thinking of right now.
The typography, layout, and printing of the book is outstanding. Heavy glossy pages do the reproduced images justice. Examples are well chosen and represent a range of photographer's and genres.
A basic reference even for the pros.......2000-12-05
So you think you know it all? This slim, artfully produced, thorough glossary of terms is beautifully illustrated, has clear descriptions of all those mysterious processes on museum labels, including a few even you might not have known, and is as useful in a collector's library as in a contemporary practitioner's.

POWER OF SEXUAL SURRENDER - MANDATORY FOR ALL WOMEN.......2001-02-10
Marie Robinson wrote this book for all women to understand their own motives and actions in the marrage relationship. Many women are unhappy in their marrages without understanding their own motivation in making themselves unhappy. The book is written in chapters, each addressing the source of their disklikes, resentments, and dissatisfaction. The book also recommends ways for the women to help themselves realize that they can correct the problems with the result of being content in their relationship.
The book is excellent for men who are married, especially when the cannot understand why their wife is not content with some aspect of the marrage. By thir understanding they can help the wife adjust her thinking by recognizing the, sometimes imaginary problems thus increasing their own happyness.
Unfortunately, some women will not read the book when it is recommended, especially by the spouse, and like my own case, wind-up divorced with great financial to the spouses and children.

Lee's Canterkerous General and father of the Lost Cause.......2000-12-31
For those well familiar with the Civil war, this is a great biography of Early in that it concentrates on Early the person and the General while assuming that you have the basic facts down on the Civil War. The author does not spend too much time on minute detail on troop movements that has been covered many times before but provides in-depth insight to "Old Jube" and his actions. A tough and controversial fighter, until reading this book I didn't know that the former Commonwealth Attorney and life long bachelor from Franklin County sired four children refusing to marry his companion because she was beneath his station. Great historical highlights such as Early's controversial role on Lee's left at Gettysburg, his great assignment defending Fredericksburg against great odds while Lee takes the rest of the army to Chancellorsville, his zealous and dictatorial grip on the Lost cause syndrome, and his public branding of the ill equipped Longstreet (not a lawyer and politically naive) as the cause of Lee's defeat at Gettysburg. Wonderful that it highlights the second battle of Fredericksburg and how the Federals found out the heights were lightly defended. In addition, the author makes an excellent case that when defending the valley after Jackson, Ewell did as well as Jackson until Grant sent Sheridan and a 40,000 man army to defeat him. The author notes that aside from poor use of his calvary and his negative tongue-lashing, Lee's "bad, old man" was a tough fighter and a major player in the Army of Northern Virginia.
Early after the war.......1999-02-18
This book doesn't really seem to deal with Early the general as much as it does Early the leader of the Lee cult after the war. Skip ahead to the last few chapters.

No stone unturned.......2007-02-08
In "The Fatal Knot", John Tone does an excellent job in covering virtually every aspect in what was the world's first professional guerilla war. His opening chapters explain the cultural and social factors which laid beneath Navarre and gave cause to a guerrilla movement there, as opposed to other regions of Spain.
Tone does rare justice to historical objectivity, taking no sides and exposing the atrocities of both Napoleon's armies and the guerrillas (who more often than not were little more than bandits). The military lesson (which Napoleon failed to learn, incidentally) was that a guerrilla war can only possibly be defeated by a huge influx of troops (which Napoleon, with his upcoming Russian campaign in mind, was unwilling to provide).
This book is absolutely essential for understanding the modern guerrilla war. It's a shame that our current decision makers have obviously not read it. Napoleon could not control Spain (with a single rebellious province) with 400,000 troops. No matter how well trained the troops are, our own nation cannot pacify a nation larger than Spain with a force one-fourth the size of Napoleon's. It is simply impossible.
A "little" war.......2002-05-07
The Fatal Knot is the only book that I could find that focused on the "guerillas" in the first guerilla war. This is particularly strange considering the importance of "guerilla" wars in South America and Africa, not to mention Vietnam. There were of course wars that contained non-regular soldiers, such as the wars against the Indians in North America, but this was the first war (or "little war," "guer-illa") that pitted regular, conscripted soldiers against irregular combatants. According to Carl Schmitt, it was one of the first cracks in the established rules of international law. The author does a good job of bringing out the most important points, and demonstrating the social basis of the support for the guerillas. He also shows why the virulence of guerilla wars is a function of the force of the regular army and not just of the "banditry" of the irregular combatants. (Interestingly, even during this war there were POWs). In many ways, this war was the first modern war, and it deserves more study than it has attracted so far. The author makes a good first step.
Sophisticated analysis, excellent read........2000-05-17
Disregarding the historiographic tradition associated with the guerillas of Navarre, John Lawrence Tone provides a much-needed social and economic analysis of the Spanish province in The Fatal Knot: The Guerilla War in Navarre and the Defeat of Napoleon in Spain. Tone's sophisticated approach and copious evidence give a clear picture of the motivations and influences of the Navarrese guerillas and the failures of the French from 1808-1813.
The first two chapters, what tone calls his "portrait of Navarre", provide the background necessary to understand the vigilance and success of the guerilla movement and its leaders. Contrasting the upper and lower regions of Navarre, Montana and Ribera, Tone is able to evaluate and pinpoint sources of rebel instigation. More explanatory passages are sprinkled throughout the narrative portion of the book, so the separation of social and narrative history is neither harsh to the reader nor boring. The final chapter, clearly defined as "Why Navarre Fought" sums up Tone's arguments for the success of the movement in Montana. The prevalence of private land ownership, a large percentage of nobility, and clerical poverty all contributed to the movement's social and economic background but the political autonomy the region enjoyed under the Spanish Monarchy was possibly the most important factor in instigating the guerilla wars.
Tone's arguments would have benefited from a comparison of the situation in Spain with that in the Kingdom of Naples. General Reynier, for example, was successful in defeating guerrillas in the similarly harsh territory of Calabria, yet he was unable to resist them in Navarre, further evidence of the importance of political sovereignty in Navarre. For now the Calabrian guerillas remain subject to the stereotypes once associated with the Navarese. (see Milton Finley, "The Most Monstrous of Wars")
